I prefer the bluish shade he appeared as in the show over the light green shade he was supposed to have. Makes him look more villainous somehow. He was an underused character, definitely came across as one of Skeletor's more competent henchmen, able to work well as an independent villain.
Yes, and it's more accurate to his vintage action figure. It's just like General Zod in the Superman movies, his costume actually had a dark red trim, but it looks black on film.
Yeah, I think Filmation's Mer-Man may be the best portrayal of the character...and you cannot say that about numerous Filmation cast members - But Mer-Man did feel bloody EVIL in this series, as well as cruel! :)
There was actually an episode of Transformers where Seaspray gets turned into a merman! (The male equivalent of a mermaid, not the MOTU character.)
Yup...the less-than-subtly titled "Sea Change"...:)
I couldn't click on this fast enough. Thank you so much for the fantastic weekly content. ❤
Thank YOU for supporting the channel - It is ALWAYS appreciated! :)
So ironic. I watched a You Tube video. 26 minutes of Filmation, Mer-Man, just yesterday. Underused in the series I felt.
He was VERY underused! :)
Lots of cool nuggets about our favourite fish face in some of his different appearances
Glad you enjoyed it! :)
I don't know if Powerhouse recorded any dialogue with Kevin Conroy for Mer-Man before he passed away, but I'm hoping we might get to hear his voice again for the last time in MotU franchise in Revolution next year. Rest in peace, Kevin.
I'll see if I can find out...:)
Merman def is one of my faves, I wish he was in a lot more eps
Yeah, it is funny when we look back and realize that he wasn't in as many episodes as we think! :)
Heck yeah, I’m for it! Just what I needed for my Saturday morning!
Reading that makes me smile! :)
Got my Mer-Man action figure here, eating orange cinnamon rolls and just having a good tile this morning. Ehehe
NICE! :)
I wonder what kind of face Mer Man would make if he saw a Tlalakan girl.
Oh, wait. 😆
(I know, that was Seaspray.)
Yeah, looking back, I'm surprised I didn't bring up "Sea Change"...but I think I was just covering Oppenheimer's use of the same voice...:)
@@cerealgeekTV not a problem. I just had to make the joke.
No mention of his 'corn'! loved the video though.
I remember in the nineties when Tom Sito was talking about Filmation and first brought up the story of an old artist that didn't care too much for the names, and thus Mer-Man became "Corn-on-the-Cob -Man" - That story always tickled me! :)
Glad you did this vid
He is one of the main hitters of the series...
How would he do against our other favourite sea creature leech?
Once Leech gets those suction cups on Mer-Man, it's pretty much game over for the Ocean Warlord! :(
Another great video James. I didn't know he was in only 12 episodes. Just purchased your series companion book from amazon. It looked awesome, so I bought it! Looking forward to reading.👍👍
YAY - Enjoy the book - The best way to enjoy it (as many have told me) is to sit down and have it present whilst watching an episode...as it becomes a somewhat "interactive" experience! :)
Amazing James. You are truly gifted with your narrations, editing, and sound...graphics...all of it. 👍
Thank you, sir! :)
I absolutely adore Mer-Man. It's a shame that Filmation made such a joke of Skelitors crew because they are all so cool. Would have loved to see Mer-Man get one over on He-Man at least just once. Also I was thinking myself how little he uses his powers in the Filmation series. They could have done so much with him, flood a town or something and have He-Man and crew come to the rescue for example. Thank you James.
Yeah, it's odd, because in the Filmation series bible they kind of give Mer-Man a lot of power...but it never really comes to fruition in the episodes themselves...though he does overthrow an entire kingdom! :)
Back then in Poland was one episode per week rule. With few exceptions like crime/mystery shows on Thursdays - they were broadcasted also before noon as "film for a second shift".
I'm pretty sure Polish TV haven't shown all episodes of "He-Man" and I remember only one episode with Mer-Man (the one with Aquatica).
Yeah, in the UK we usually received one episode per week on terrestrial TV...but we DID get the whole series - However, it was in chunks...and it took five years for us to see the entire series! :)
@@cerealgeekTV "Growing up with He-Man" :) At least you had them all :D In 80s communist government really tried to keep people in homes and Polish TV was almost up to date with good movies and tv-shows but if the series was made of closed, independent stories they often used to butcher the number and the order of the episodes. (It costed real currency which was scarce)
Grampa's war stories :D
Would you ever do an episode or episodes about the new adventures of he-man?
Of course - I LOVE that show (I've championed it on-line since the nineties) - I've already written my script for the TOP TEN EPISODES of The New Adventures of He-Man - I'm hoping to get that recorded and edited for next year! :)
I wonder what happened to mer-man after the episode "The games"
I'd like to think that he quietly retired...hanging out with his Fish Men and Attack Fish...:)
Once again sir your facts are awesome. :) It makes me wonder though if we might one day see a video like this where you mention 50 facts about a non-Masters of the Universe character for a change, hmmm. I guess we'll see. :)
You shall indeed! :)
@@cerealgeekTV Awesome. :) I'll be looking forward to seeing those. :)
The last week or so I've written scripts for quite a few "50 Things About..." videos - I'm looking forward to editing them! :)
@@cerealgeekTV Awesome. :) I'll be looking forward to seeing them when they get done. :)
The one I'm looking forward to editing the most is the one about a certain enemy of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! :)
Seaspray didn't sound exactly like Mer-Man, since all Transformers have a voice modulation effect applied in post production. Just like Cobra Commander and Starscream's voices.
My point was that at the core, the voice actor, in this case Alan Oppenheimer, is performing the same voice...post-production is another thing! :)
@@cerealgeekTV exactly. I mean, Alan kind of recycled Battle-Cat/Cringer for Warpath at the core. Mind, the roar was replaced with onomatopoeia, but I kinda picked it out.
Yeah, I loved the way Warpath delivered his dialogue! :)
Craving fish and chips all of a sudden 🖖🤤
No word of a lie...I'm currently at my place waiting for Fish & Chips to arrive (via Just Eat)! :)
@@cerealgeekTV mmmmm… fried fish and vinegar covered chips 🤤🤤🤤
Enjoy 😇👍
Fun video! Thank you! Easily one of my favourite Evil Warriors, but not one of my favourite Vintage figures.
Yeah, I had Mer-Man very early on as a kid...but I didn't play with him all that much...so the action figure became a tad forgettable...:(
love me some MOTU facts ☝
I hope there are some tidbits in here that entertain thee! :)
ooooh nice. By the way, my brain keeps telling me that Skeletor's hovering robots were recycled from another Filmation series. But i can't think of which one, or whether my brain is Mandela-effecting me.
They were used in a She-Ra episode.
@@calelle well yeah but I meant an earlier Filmation series, like 1970s-ish.
@@shebakoby oh. That I have no idea!
From what I know, the Hover Robots were not borrowed from an existing Filmation show - Although, I'm confident that the design of the Horde Troopers heads were based on the Hover Robots...I mean, it would make sense...as Filmation were working with Mattel to create the characters for the She-Ra series! :)
Yeah, they appeared in the episode "Small Problems" - I remember Glimmer saying something like, "I've never seen these before!", whilst we the audience had very much seen them before! :)
Thanks
My pleasure! :)
I want to learn more about Merman's pickle sword.
I think in certain circles it's known as a corn on the cob sword! :)
It's based on the rostrum of a sawfish. There are real-world weapons that are made from sawfish rostra.
@@cerealgeekTV That's interesting.
Mark Taylor's original illustration really hints at those sawfish origins...but the sword that came with the action figure kind of (sadly) deviates...:(
😊👍🏾🎥
Thank you! :)
@@cerealgeekTV welcome bro.
Another video (an episode commentary for another Filmation cartoon) will be appearing next Saturday! :)
@@cerealgeekTV I looking forwarded to watch that video next Saturday. Have a great weekend my friend.
BTW: Have you counted all Wilhelm's Screams in He-Man series? :D
Yeah, when he's putting the sound effects into these videos Dusan LOVES inserting that iconic scream! :)
@@cerealgeekTVI've heard it too many times in your vids to consider it a coincidence :D
I'm annoyed because I've discovered MOTU Origins way to late - somehow all the news about it haven't pierced into my "bubble" and now all the cool figures are scarce and cost as much and some even more than original run vintage toys.... This is that dark side of "emancipations of nerds".
Give it a few years and the action figure collectors will be chasing the latest toys...then you'll be able to pick up carded Origins figures rather cheaply! :) - I remember a time when the 2002 toyline was going for utterly ridiculous prices on eBay...that is most definitely not the case now...
@@cerealgeekTV May your words turn to gold, efendi! 😁
Already at the second thing, I noticed that and always got confused about his color. I'm really interested in the film process and get how is it possible to get from that green to blue? You'd need to take off a lot of yellow. Also, as far as you know, this color shift was a common thing at the time? Bc if it's so one may wonder if they didn't painted him with that green just bc they knew it would appear with that blue and that was the initial intention, lol.
I remember seeing that Tri-Klops' green armour and visor were very bright in the Filmation character sheets, but always looked very dark green in the actual cartoons.
Likewise, the Evil Warriors' war sleds were annoyingly inconsistent in colour from scene to scene, so much so that it was infuriating trying to get a good reference pic so I could repaint the Classics war sled that came with the Battle Ram.
Yeah, believe it or not, what you see digitally is not always the most accurate depiction of the cartoon - It's only when you see original backgrounds and cels that you realize that, as good as the transfers are, they're not 100% accurate! :)
awesome! i love mer-man!
He's awesome...and, as I say in this video, surprisingly underused in the series! :)
