Nice solution for a renovation fix. My new construction house is post and beam with lots of glass. To ensure the sills could withstand knocks, drippy plant pots and the odd cup of spilled tea I used paperply plywood to case them them tied that into the drywall with corner bead. Ten years later they are solid as the day they were installed. Paperply is commonly used for concrete forming so it is able to withstand liquid and abuse far better than drywall/mud. The main caveat is that it must be painted with diluted wood glue so that the corners can be finished (faired) with tape and glue where necessary.

it's funny, back in the 90s and 2000s, cheap homes were trimless with just drywall around the window. My 1990s home has had this "upgrade" for 30 years already. Interesting that you want that instead of wood trimmed windows. New mansions in southern california all have wood trimmed windows, except the ugly box homes. I bet in a decade or 2, window casing will make a comeback. Endless cycle of interior "upgrades".
I remember that too and no doubt you may be right. Ultimately homeowners should choose something that they love and will be happy with in the long run. There is also a good case to take it easy on the upgrades and to appreciate what you have.

I live in Alberta so I was worried about the expansion and contraction, cracking etc of the window return if I was to replace the trims to trimless. Would u do this in a climate like Alberta has? I’m assuming this project u did was in BC?
Hi Marizel, I'm in Toronto and we experience high rates of expansion and contraction due to climate like you in Alberta. I'd do this in any climate because using this tape is a simple step to prevent cracking. I've been using it for years on all my patching and reinforcing. Give it a try and let me know what you think? There’s builder grade which is basic and cost effective. Any improvements like this which are costly in terms of labor are upgrades to a home. If you prefer trim, that’s cool too. In my area homes are upgrading to drywall returns for modern interiors. Thanks for the question!

Great video, you certainly make it look easy and doable! I was looking for ideas on trimless windows. For me, it's more of a practical need than esthetics, although I do really like how it looks. We are renovating our basement kitchen and removed old cabinets. There was very little distance between the large window and the cabinets and they had to notch out the trim which was very unattractive! Since we're planning on a tiled backsplash all the way up to the window and having the upper cabinets on either side go right to the window, this trimless window idea is the solution! We had new windows installed a couple years ago and they didn't need to remove the jambs. So am I correct to assume that I can remove the wood jambs and replace with drywall? What's the advantage to doing this over just putting drywall on top? Thanks so much!

This is not good! You are using the wrong drywall bead.. you can use J beads and avoid the step of making the window opening smaller.. and it’s much faster..

@@DaruDhillon Our daughter spent a lot of money doing that on her remodel and hates it. Everyone asks her when they are going to finish. She is sensitive and it really hurts her feelings. Drywall corners in a doorway are not very robust.

Practice makes this easier and faster. I just did drywall returns around my electrical panel opening. For people interested in learning drywall it’s a good skill to know. 👍🏽

Where I live this clean modern look is the go-to. Upgrades are a personal choice and may not suite everyone’s style. If you have a traditional home you might prefer casing. 👍🏽
Drywall over wood window return…wasting time and money! Guess what taping compound will bond to wood. Don’t use plastic. Use tape on metal corner bead , tape directly to wood, No L metal ! The return is done. No big ass gap around window . Sorry ,this Gal is not a good finisher.
Vinyl beads are a game changer and you can do so much with them. The finished window can been seen in my Window Desk video for those who like the look. Cheers!

How do you open ur window? Is it openable?
This is a fixed window so it doesn’t open.

I feel you l beads are harder to find depending on where you live. You’ll make something work for you.
