I've got a '91 Chevy Kodiak with a 3116 and so far I've not done anything to it. It gets 10+ mpg hauling 33k GVW. Maybe I've just been lucky but it has been extremely reliable. However you can't go wrong with a DT466. That's a really professional job of swapping engines and transmissions.
that was an awesome video for sure !! fabrication work installing engines in anything is a blast !! then watching it run perfect makes the day and its always fun to learn as ya go
I as well like the "corn queen" even though most parts are ove kill in size and weight. I have owned several trucks for several purposes as I was into the logging/mining sene and needed then equipped with heavy gear. Equipment is only as good as the driver/mechanic can keep them. I never abused them but I did work them hard and eventually it catches up to you. You can only be in one place at a time regardless how hard you try. Great videos on what you do as it shows that I'm wrong when it comes to being in two places at once. Your the mechanic and can see if there is abuse or just hard work catching up to you. I feel like your here talking straight to me. I' 70 now and over the years plus the Vietnam war has left its toll on me. Thanks again for your videos as I rewatch several of them... you a good man and not into the work so much for the money as you make the community a part of your life as well as making your family a important part of it too
I've watched you mix and match engines, transmissions, bodies, etc., on probably a dozen passenger cars and hot rods. All very cool and impressive. But with those you weren't really making as big a bet as with this Top Kick truck. With this one all your time, parts expense, fitting and adapting had to fall into place and become a productive piece of business equipment. And you say it has given your towing operation 120k miles of trouble-free performance? Amazing. I nominate you for induction into the mechanics' hall of fame if there is one. I'd guess that when you retire the sum total of automotive knowledge in the US will take a serious hit.
I am just a dumb Yankeee....but i love your videos. My dad and grampa were always fixing, mending and reporpusing things. I love that . God Bless and please carry on.
I have a 2000 topkick c7500.. such a clean, sweet truck. Ive been having years worth of electrical issues that the CAT dealer can't even figure out. I'm going to be doing this exact swap. The truck was a 3126 and mt643. How did you get the gauges to work? And if you want to make some cash, I can bring you the swap and the truck!
Nice work! Congratulations on the swap . I'm on the same road I have a 2006 GMC c5500 8.1l propane with Allison trans and I'm dropping a 466e 6 speed manual I'm hoping it will fit I know I'm headed for some head scratchin but once it's accomplished it should be a good feeling... ok my question to you : drop engine into the gmc or swap cab onto international chassis ? Any feed back would be greatly appreciated thanks and again very nice work done on your swap
Hello Johnathon , that is a cool video! It describes just what has to be done to make this work. I am also a big fan of International DT-466 engines... I really like the strong and reliable reputation that they have with the thousands of school bus's and medium sized trucks that are still driving on the road. I have a 1970 Dodge 3/4 ton 4-door p/u that I would like to put one of these engines and trans into. I know it will be a real challenge with the increased length, weight and torque that the original 383 gas engine had , but I'm sure it would be worth the trouble. What I really like about the DT's is that they have wet sleeves which makes doing an in-frame overhaul very easy and relatively inexpensive, since there are so many parts available out there for them...
They are very tough engines, I have a project coming up later that may include one if I find one cheap enough, I have a 7.8 Ford diesel, but would rather have the 466. Thanks For watching!!
Mike, you may have already done this project but if you haven't or for anyone else thinking about putting a DT466 in a pickup- Look at using a DT360. They are shorter and much lighter. They can be pushed to good horse power levels with turbo and pump upgrades. DT360s are more rev friendly so they have a little wider useable power band that makes them nicer in a pickup. A DT360 can handle the same power levels as a 5.9 Cummins, and will respond well to the same mods. The DT has few benefits over the Cummins, such as being a wet sleeved engine. There is a lot of info online comparing the engines,
Hi, Jonathan, that (putting 10 pound of flour in a 3 pound bag) is what is known as a "blivit", an old Army term, as best as I remember. thanks for sharing, God Bless and staay safe.
I’ve gotta 97 top kick with a recovery deck like this, it’s got a 3116 that has been trouble free for almost three years . I’ve heard this cat is called the Kleenex box ... cuz you throw it away when you’re done .
Great Swap out , I had a Ford F700 with the 3208 Cat , it smoked , it leaked oil , and had the annoying throw out bearing rattle with the clutch in , I hated that engine ....
Kinda odd to see a Navistar engine swapped into anything. I guess if I was going pick one it would be a mechanical 466. I don’t care for the one I drive at work.
I’ve asked this question several times but never got a clear answer. I haul logs on a 26000 Topkick. My dad is older. Lil weaker than he used to be so I’d like to get him an allison. How does the Allison’s in the topkicks do holding back going downhill with 26K or more. We weigh in the high 30’s sometimes but don’t tell lol. Just curious about how they hold back
I took my CDL test in an International dump truck with a DT 466 and a 5 speed with a 2 speed rearend. There seems to be 2 groups with said engine, those that love them and those that hate them.
I'm in the process of swapping a Allison 643 in a 81 International 1754 that I'm building a toy hauler out of. What rear end ratio are you running and speeds you see? I'm trying figure out what I need to achieve a decent highway speed and still pull hills towing my boat. Max I will ever tow would be 10k.
nice job that's a major surgery swap I've driven a number of the 466's good engine for sure I can't say I've used any of the smaller cats the larger ones I've used have been great
I was looking forward to getting a GMC C7500 Topkick Rollback Tow Truck Caterpillar Diesel 6 Speed Manual, Black Exterior+Gray Vinyl Interior. But it's a 2000
Job well done Jonathon, keep up the good work, God blessed, hey Jonathon what happen to your 1939 pick up truck did you sold it? Or you still got it, how much?
Had a 97 chevy c6500 with the 3116 cat was driving down the road on my way to the landfill and all of a sudden it dropped oil pressure and spun the bearings
I had a DOT citation for an overweight by 22,000 lbs because of how my company registered my truck and it was $3700 when it was all said and done. It was local DOT.
I donn't know much about the 3116's...the smallest Cat's I drove with was the 3208 & 3306. Most of my experience is on the 1693, the 3406 & the 3408. But I have seen the reviews on the DT466 & the buses I seen them in ran really well... In school they dispalyed a fresh OH DT466 & an 855 Cummins @ 290HP... They made some good noise @ the school expo...
how many miles can you get out of a dt466? as many as you want. new ones have million mile warranties. power for towing is better than the 3116. you're going from 402ci in the 3116 to 466ci in the dt466.
Got a topkick at work with a 3116 cat. It's a joke. About as slow as a geo metro pulling a trailer. I dont know if the engine is just that weak or if the trans is slipping. Dont even feel it shift till about 35-40 mph
I don't see what the big deal was a dt466 is a medium duty truck engine, a topkick is a medium duty truck. the frames on all medium duty trucks are the same. heck a ford f800 i think came with a Cummins 8.3 weighs 1630lbs from the factory. way bigger than dt466.
adam sorell could be because the engine is 6 inches longer than as 3116 and even more than that longer than a 5.9 Cummins. They never put a dt466 in a gm medium duty truck.
you know they say people are smarter when they go to school and get a college degree but when a man could take an engine out of an old bus and sticking in his tow truck get it to work that's what I call her educated man somebody can take nothing and make it into something you are smart man not just trying to kiss your butt I'm just saying that you are smart man!
The big rig caterpillar engines are the good ones. The smaller ones not really. The c12 is not a bad engine, but smaller than that (light duty cat engines) aren’t the best.
3116 motors are not great motors but the old mechanical dt motors are hard to beat I love them for durability my truck has an egr version which make great power but no where near as durable.
Chris Mansker The mechanical DT-530 , is a good one too. Can't kill it. I drove a concrete mixer ,with a 300 horsepower DT-530 , and an Eaton-Fuller 8LL. It would run 65mph at 2,250rpm, with a 10cu-yd load.
very true as a mechanic that worked at a international dealer for over 20 years I would if I had a choice always pick a mechanical over an electronic due to the reliability of the older mechanical motors
I’ve got a 94 4700 with the t444e. In wanting to put an older mechanical dt466 in it. I can’t seem to get anyone interested in doing the swap for me. Do you know anyone that could do this or help me do this? I’m on Tn/va line and am willing to take take it a reasonable distance if I could find someone to help me. If anyone knows of someone that can help please let me know.

I’ve got a 99 C7500 with the 3126 cat & 7 speed splicer trans , I’d love to do this same swap . Great video sir 👍🏿

Awesome engineering job, video, stills and truck.
And I have been worried about swapping an engine in a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Lol... That swap was quite impressive.
Whit Wilson swap a 2-53 into a jeep grand Cherokee lol

Nice truck ,Good Job! Jonathan you are a really good Fabricator.........
Nice swap, and with the donor being a bus I'm sure it was well maintained.
I am just a dumb Yankeee....but i love your videos. My dad and grampa were always fixing, mending and reporpusing things. I love that . God Bless and please carry on.
great video I have always loved the 466 at my shop we have 3 of them and two internationals with the Cummins in them

But this right here is why your channel is so entertaining and special, when you put your mind to something you get it done.
I miss driving that topkick definitely a good running truck
Hi, Jonathan, that (putting 10 pound of flour in a 3 pound bag) is what is known as a "blivit", an old Army term, as best as I remember. thanks for sharing, God Bless and staay safe.

Thanks for watching!! I hated the 3116 in the Topkick. The clutch pedal was so hard it killed my knee!!
Kinda odd to see a Navistar engine swapped into anything. I guess if I was going pick one it would be a mechanical 466. I don’t care for the one I drive at work.
You are just amazing Jonathan....
That's theresa a guy from back in the day called amazing Jonathan
I’ve asked this question several times but never got a clear answer. I haul logs on a 26000 Topkick. My dad is older. Lil weaker than he used to be so I’d like to get him an allison. I like that putting taking one problem out and then putting something better and I like that
I took my CDL test in an International dump truck with a DT 466 and a 5 speed with a 2 speed rearend. There seems to be 2 groups with said engine, those that love them and those that hate them.

Very reliable swap you have there.
So how's the motor been so far? Worth the hassle? Able to turn it up a bit? I still researching repower options.
What would you charge to do that to another truck. I have a 1991 Topkick and would love to have that drivetrain
Enjoying your video,s,would love to look round your yard
great job on the repower. They call it Keep it simple for a reason
nice job that's a major surgery swap I've driven a number of the 466's good engine for sure I can't say I've used any of the smaller cats the larger ones I've used have been great
When you say the trk is"low pro" what are you referring too?
Very impressive job. Thanks.
SubtleKnowledg
Wow ! You're the man, lol.
That is a great video. Thanks for sharing.
I was looking forward to getting a GMC C7500 Topkick Rollback Tow Truck Caterpillar Diesel 6 Speed Manual, Black Exterior+Gray Vinyl Interior. But it's a 2000
Jonathan did you make your own motor mounts or you just had to reposition the old ones
EXCELLENT swap! Cat's biggest POS to IH's finest.
Which engine it's better DT466 or 8.3 cummins mechanical pump?? Thanks
Job well done Jonathon, keep up the good work, God blessed, hey Jonathon what happen to your 1939 pick up truck did you sold it? Or you still got it, how much?

Could this engine match up to a standard trans?

Kohala Iron Works That 855 290 Cummins was a darn good engine!
will the dt466 mate to a spicer 3053a transmission ?
very impressive
How many miles were on the bus? I'm trying to figure out how many miles I can get out of a 466. How's the power for towing?
how many miles can you get out of a dt466? as many as you want. new ones have million mile warranties. power for towing is better than the 3116. you're going from 402ci in the 3116 to 466ci in the dt466.
You can in frame a DT466!
My old Top Kick had the 3208 Cat with the 10Sp road ranger ... So what was wrong with the 3116 Cat motor ? was it under powered ?
No sleeves, throw away engine. Notorious for injector cups and many other issues.
Tasty job , hats off to you
that seat needs repaired/replaced here the State Patrol would gig ya on that when ya went to get your DOT inspection!
I do a lot with my cars but I sure wish I had your skills.
Got a topkick at work with a 3116 cat. It's a joke. About as slow as a geo metro pulling a trailer. I dont know if the engine is just that weak or if the trans is slipping. Dont even feel it shift till about 35-40 mph
i love learning A+
a 8.2 liter cummins would of been a great swap in the truck!
8.2L Cummins?
Are you sure you didn't mean 8.3L because there is no such thing as an 8.2L Cummins.
Cummins good engine but not every bodys a fan boy
beautiful job
how hard was it to wire?
Why you swap the Cat??
nice work! I salute you
Why not a 3126?

spackmaster Chavez Indeed!
AMEN!
I’m wondering if anyone knows if a 1998 T444E from a school bus will bolt up to an 1994 International 4600 rollback
short answer- yes. theyre all 7.3 powerstrokes. you will have to swap the electronics from the 94 to the 98 but it will fit and bolt up no problem
The big rig caterpillar engines are the good ones. The smaller ones not really. The c12 is not a bad engine, but smaller than that (light duty cat engines) aren’t the best.

Seems like it wouldn’t be too bad but I’m not a mechanic either.
it was a factory option so just find a 4700 with a dt466 in a truck junkyard and grab the mounts and stuff... no fab work necessary
That Detroit will last for ever
Maidenlord 666 what Detroit?
DT466 is an International product...not a Detroit, just so you know.
Lindo
can i have the old engine XD
