3116 CAT SUCKS

  • Im trying to figure out whats going on with the cat motor in my gmc topkick. Runs ok at idle and cold.. but warming up starts running crapy and then loses all power and smokes really black!!
    UPDATE ..FUEL PUMP WAS BAD!

    I know this is a late comment, I have one of these engines , you need to run the valves and injector timing about every 30,000 miles as a preventive maintenance. I did mine at 25K and the engine was a lot more quit and ran better after service by Cat dealer. Not cheap but better than breaking down on the road..

    Put a boost gauge on the turbo, Loaded at max throttle should be better than 30psi. Check the pop off valve and all the air intake plumbing for boost loss. Fuel injection pump pressure might be low, Check fuel tank pick up for clogs and make sure the fuel lines and fuel filters are not sucking in air.

    If your still watching this, I would love to tune that engine Dude. I love them because there all mechanical and you can synchronize all the injectors and do fuel timing ect and fuel settings. Cat tooling is required though. My Diagnosis on the sound of the engine is that you have more than one injector delivering more fuel.

    Yea I have the 3126 in my other truck and I think its a better engine! That would actualy be nice if it was just the check valve. I will have to check that when i get time... still pretty busy right now.

    Perhaps the priming pump needs new o rings when they are old or worn air gets by and makes it run badly, just a thought.

    I would check the prepump on feul injection, it needs preasure before the injection pump of 40-60lbs if I remember correctly, if not its starving the injection pump and low power will be the result. Its the simplest place to start,

    Found a top kick with a 3116. Googled is a 3116 a good engine and the first thing that popped up is your video lol.

    I have seen many used in older military trucks. Bottom line they are a garbage engine. There are numerous things that go wrong in the fuel system to make it run the way it is in your clip. The mechanical engines require HIGH dollar special tools to set the rack, it's basically a 2 stroke Detroit set-up for the injectors, but you need special CAT tooling to do the measurements. There is a check valve for the fuel supply that gets clogged and you get all sorts of odd starting/running problems.

      Many used? The M35A3-M109A4 all used the 3116 but were built for a short six years and weren't that common either way.They had the same engine in the LMTV-MTV/FMTV but that's rarely mentioned because for over 20 years now they all use the 3126/C-7.At the time when they were relevant most military trucks all run Cummins and Detroit Diesel only.

    First off start with the pump. Now all this 3208 smack talk. It wasn't for lack of a liner. It was a lack of a compression ring , this was figured out real fast in the T engine. As far as this engine , timing armature seem off.

    I would love to say what happened to CAT but least we not forget the first series 3208??? No liners. They called it the through away motor at 100,000 kilometers. No chance to rebuild. Sad, very very sad.

      Yes...They were ok if looked after... and they lasted longer if they were at a set rpm....not like in a truck., but I still hate them.

    I have a 1990 gmc topkick with the 3116 cat and it sounds like this on start up but when its running it clears up ill get a video up soon. -30 celcius right now so wont start but i will get a video soon

    Your problems with this motor reminds me back in the 70's when the 3208 came out. 100,000 miles and through it away! No cylinder liners!!!! Just plain junk. Hope you got it sorted.

    You either got an injector going down sun or maybe you need to run the overhead and reset the fuel rack and governor on it

    It has a fuel pump, It will either be a common rail or P-pump. Most 3116 are P-pump's. It's the thingy where the injector lines hook up. Mechanical just means no computer. All mechanical diesels have some sort of injection pump. Your engine sounds as if it's getting air in the fuel.

    I have a 95' Kodiac 3116. Different smoky problem. Ran ok, but smoked all the time. Cam ware, caused injectors to "stroke" too long(height or timing). Therefore, too much fuel. Carefully adjusted injectors down. Took 3 hours. Grey fuel smoke went away and engine idles better. Now, I have to adjust valves. If you have water leaks or a lot of pressure, possible blown head gasket, but I don't think that is your problem. I agree with Whitey"injectors". Maybe worn tips? Hope this helps.

    Did you find your problem? I just looked at a 93 today with same engine. It's had an easy life hauling plumbing supplies but if I get it it will have a 18 ft grain body put on it. It sounds like your problem is common since I've found posts about 3116 doing same thing even in marine applications. Should I look for an IH with DT466?

      No not yet. I am planning on getting it looked at sometime this winter. I think if its had a easy life it would be fine.. This truck has a gravel body and used to be a plow truck for highways. Its had its fair share of work.

    First off compression test first then injector second sounds to me like it's only running on three cylinders when it is idling after that injection pump but I would be looking at the injectors

    No there isnt any water leaks or pressure like that so I think the head gasket is fine. It just got progressivly worse. Now when you start it... it ildes ok but sounds kinda funny... and if you drive it for a bit it starts to smoke and sputter and it will lose all power and come to a stop and almost quit and most times now it does quit. Wait awhile and it will start up again and idle.

    This engine doesnt have a injection pump. Its mechanical.

    try a cylinder contribution test if you have the software. sounds like a cylinder is missing possibly a stiction issue with an injector (if they are HEUI im not sure about 3116s but i know the 3126 are HEUI) or poor compression also check fuel pressure.

      Its all mechanical... no software on this baby. But I havent made a video yet but I have solved the problem on it... It was the electric fuel pump on it that was bad.

      oilerman9406 I have a 91 and its running but when i give it throttle its dies out. is their a mecanical pift pump or an electric fuel pump on these things? I am thinking its a fuel issue either the lift pump or filter/ fuel line block issue

      Northern farmer my Bossman bought 5 of them tandems two of them work great three of them were nothing but trouble one of them even caught on fire they were like a pinto dump truck

      @@Brrrap743 yup..it runs good now...it turned out to be the electric fuel pump....which was strange because when it started running bad..it would smoke hard...which seems like to much fuel

      +Can't B you not at all cases my friend I put a brand-new fuel pump and mine and still run like a bag of shit took out the injectors had them rebuilt put them back in it ran perfect

      Injectors will not fire if they are plugged up or the end nozzles war right out

      I know it, had to replace the ones in my '95 6.5l, and helped change out injectors on a friends 7.3 they didn't atomize the fuel anymore the fuel just shot like an open water tap, he said it stopped knocking.

      It would definitely cause some serious smoking but it shouldn't choke it out that easily. Sounds like something in your intake or exhaust system is either plugged or working improperly to cause incomplete combustion.

      Yea it will start up and run ok until I get it going... then it will start to chatter smoke like a coal fired steam engine and then lose all power and die. Wait a little while and it starts up and idles.

      Something is definitely plugging it up for sure. Seems to be your turbocharger waste gate or exhaust brake valve that stays closed for longer than needed. Therefore when you start it up again it idles fine because the valve opens up on the second or third try. As for the smoking and acting like it wants to quit, I suggest taking a look at your glow plugs, it's possible that it may have a dead cylinder.

    You are pushing way too much fuel into that engine. Thank you to a cat man and let him set your fuel rack and your injectors and your overhead valves and make sure your fuel Governor is connected to your rack on the inside I saw those come off before but you don't have any major issues

      Actually it's not enough fuel...I replaced the fuel pump and it ran fine

    You got a bad injector or your fuel rail needs to be synced. Check out “adept ape” RUclips channel, he a Cat specialist.

    dead cylinder !! removed your injectors, knocking sound, common problem for this engine are nozzles and the number 5 piston, 3116 also a pain i the ass when installing injectors without installing setting tool, CAT#173-1530 you should have this setting tool or else the diesel tank will be pressurize. and your truck will become like a steam boat

      Wow.. yea the tank does pressurize like crazy... I had diesel coming out the breather tube all the time. Im going to get a cat tech to look at it . Thanks for the comment.

      3126/C-7 is a ticking time bomb on head gaskets and electronics.Ever since 1998 that is what they use in the FMTV which is the LMTV and MTV in the Army only.They make 290 HP/860 TQ so it's impressive for a 7.2L but it could've been better in terms of reliability and durability.The same engine a decade later after these is used in the MATV/MRAPV and has the same shit to it's name.The only great thing about them is absolutely zero emissions on them because the military has EPA exemption.
      The 3116 only made 170 HP/404 TQ and most of the time had exhaust valve stud or injector screw ups,the FMTV's had them for a few years first and the M35A3-M109A4 all had the same engine too.
      Those two and the 3208 weren't that great of engines,not in the long run.The 3208 is what the C50-C70/Topkick-Kodiak got starting in 1980 and the trucks with one always came with tilt hoods just like if it had the Cummins V903 due to them being 10.4L & 14.8L,but the ones that all used the 4-53T,4-53,8.2L,8.2LT,292,350,366,427,or 454 had normal hoods on them.
