I think everyone is missing the point Rieko was never the problem we need a quality first five is all DMAC is a joke he's just not that good and it makes everyone around him look sloppy
Glad someone is pointing this out. I've always preferred Anton Lienert-Brown at 13, and now with the rise of Billy Proctor, he seems like the brightest prospect at 13 in my opinion. Ioane's biggest strength is that he's incredible at fixing a defender, but that can only go so far if you can't pass the ball to your winger. I think he's the best 11 in NZ but everyone seems to persist with him at 13. His only real competition is Caleb Clarke for the 11 jersey since imo Tele'a, Reece, and Jordan are all 14s and not 11s.
No Aaron Smith, no Richie Mo’unga means less fast ball to Reiko. The whole world is aware of his dangerous presence thus leading to strategies of shutting him down.
Good analysis again. Similar to your 1st video but 2 big factors have been the 2nd half of Hansen era and Foster reign. No strategic foresight to match the change in rugby with rule changes and style of play challenges (especially compared to South Africa, but similar with Northern hemisphere teams, just that South Africa have been far more successful) and then other other factor compared to Conrad Smith or Umaga is consistency of centre pairing, i.e. Rieko has not had the huge benefit. Will be interesting to see Razor’s strategy. Would be amazing if, say, Jordie Barret came to Blues - yes, almost 0 chance, but more chance than Rieko going to ‘Canes seeing that Beauden Barrett will be back with the Blues. Let’s go All Blacks
People who hate on Rieko just don’t know footy at all. They say he can’t pass? But he’s never been put away in situations where he has to find his outsides. Now whose fault would that be? Everyone else inside him for not playing to his strengths, watch an AB game and see how many times off a set piece Rieko is just used as a decoy runner. Why not isolate who’s marking him and get him in a 1 on 1 situation to burn his man THEN set up a pass to the outside. Not only this, but defensively, Riekos been one of the best defensive centres in the world at the moment, his speed allows him to play in tight with his 2nd 5. His defensive decisions have been really good too as he knows when to shut on a defender or to trust his insides and man out. Yes, his form hasn’t been the best this season, but EVERY great All Black has a season like this IE; when everyone thought Sam cane should’ve started over Richie, when everyone thought Maa Nonu should’ve made way for another younger star, when everyone said Aaron smith had lost it back in 2019 etc, every great All Black has a season where they’re just figuring it out before they hit the straps and start taking off, I predict for Rieko in the coming years we will see his ALL AROUND game flourishing on the world stage! Now for everyone that hates on him for being arrogant, get a grip! He’s on the field, playing a close test match against respected rivals, ofcourse there’s going to be a bit of tension. Add to this, why do you think the NRL has been making waves of late? No it’s not because they’re all bland and basic with robotic interview responses with the ol “full credit to the boys” bullshit. No, it’s because they let their players have a personality, they let them be themselves and let them express their feelings which in turn makes the fans tune in even more. I will never understand the Rieko Ioane hate, it doesn’t make any sense to me. But I will say, the tall poppy in this country is one I hate the most. People seem to forget how incredible he was in last years RWC. Both Jordie and Ioane have both suffered with DMAC at 10. They were both standouts when Richie was 10. An amazing 10 always ignites the back line. Especially if talent is out wide.
Riekos try against France sums up what he brings at Centre. Every other team uses the 13 to make meters and bust tackles (which is fine) but having that amount of speed in the midfield is imo the biggest X factor any team has. In an AB team that is actually playing well and providing good ball I believe he will start to dominate again. Maybe if that isnt gonna happen then we should move to a different profile of Centre to help make meters but we need time to see how the team develops, but there isnt anyone at the level to replace him anyway (maybe Joey Manu when he comes). Also to all those who say he cant pass you havent really watched him the last few seasons. He was terrible when was first moved to Centre but in the last year or 2 he has become average at worst in that area
@@robertosalsone5655 He was incredible in the RWC. He's getting blamed for DMACs clueless leadership and TJs grandpa distribution. Even Jordie is know where to be seen with those 2 clowns on the inside.
Your conclusion doesnt match your video title. The worth of Rieko was shown in the 1st test vs Argentina in 2024, where Argentina put the most points on the ABs ever at home and Rieko wasn't picked at centre. His speed at centre is invaluable, meaning he can track runners and hunt then down if someone misses a tackle. ALB is just too slow at international level hence the score leakage against the Argentinians (ALB was chosen at 13 instead of Rieko). And it seems Razor realised this after the game hence why Rieko has been picked ever since. Proctor wouldn't have the defence of a Rieko plus he is also too slow in attack and wouldnt hold defenders with dummy runs as Rieko has been doing. Doubters don't see all the work Rieko does at centre off the ball, be that tracking runners, deterring them from attacking, to cleaning out rucks effectively. It might not be the razzle dazzle of his wing play but it is needed and more so given the aggression of defences nowadays. And Razor's team is also starting to make back plays around Rieko so he is only going to prove the doubters wrong IMO.
Good points but do you think Rieko himself is happiest at centre or on the wing? The wing position seems more suited to the kind of person he is, happier to receive a pass than give one.
@@rabbitss11 What people seem to forget is that he started life as a centre then moved to wing, so for him he was always meant to be a centre. People just don't like change....ask yourself what did Jessie Kriel or Lukanyo Am do better than Rieko in their two recent tests, given they are viewed as "proper" no. 13s?
You missed the most important skill of 13 and that’s distribution and the backs have not been any where near allblacks level and can’t we have a centre with defence and putting his wingers into space . Think you need to watch Billy proctor closer what he can do for a back line . He’s no slouch and not as slow as you think in that department and wingers are the gas and not traditionally centres . There ball players who see space and I’m not seeing our wingers freed up at all and guess who stands next to the wing . 100% disagree. He's good but the players aren't good at getting the ball to him. Mounga made Reiko shine. Reiko won Super Rugby at 13. He just needs good delivery.
He's gotten good ball countless time but lacks distributional skills and any ability to break a tackle. The way he played for the Blues in SR does NOT translate well to test rugby. In SR he was encouraged to run with the ball, test matches are against different freaks of nature. ALB is far superior in that position
I think Reiko gets nit picked at a lot by haters. Now Narawa is looking really strong at centre too. He could possibly be the all blacks answer to the mid field combo they’ve been searching for. I think NZ still haven’t found a good midfield combo since Nonu and Smith.
I dont rate him on attack in the centre's but its all around defense that cements him in that position.. when razor shifted rieko to wing in the last quarter of the s.a match recently, you could clearly see glimpses of old rieko with him making meters, beating defenders etc.. it was a breath of fresh air to watch cuz we're so used to him getting shut down everytime.. when hes on the wing, he has more space to work with
I think Reiko would be a bettter winger than he is centre. But in saying that: - He's one of our best centre options - I don't think he'll make much impact at winger because we already have world class wingers (may/may not be in current form) reece and telea/clarker. They get no ball though, since there seems to be a breakdown on our attack I think the benefits of him playing wing would be that we could bring in proctor and use ALB/Jordy a bit more. All 3 i think are great distributors. Meaning Reiko could see better ball on the wing. I would defintely try him at centre, but i don't know if this is going to solve the core issue of our attack being poopoo against great defensive teams like england and SA. Sure we might put a show on against a wounded Aussie team, but no offense to them.. it's not going to be a real test. Forwards are looking fantastic though, which has been AB's downfall last few years. So I'm hoping this is just a rebuild phase, once we sort that attack out, could look great.
Rieko is barely put into space at 13. Hes either running into traffic or a decoy creating a big gap for someone else to run through. This year hes out of form. Not as bad as 2019 but hes had 2 concussions this year. More than hes had his whole career prior Im pretty sure. When he got moved to wing last game he was breaking tackles. If ABs built their attack more around rieko and jordan running full acceleration onto a pass, running at a gap. Theyd go far. But of course for that to be possible the forwards gotta set the platform, and theyre progressing quite nicely so its a possibility. Yes i realize rieko is the one that should put players into space but hes not your traditional centre... maybe his sabbatical (hopefully in france or URC) will unlock that part of his game because the current blues just used him for defense. Good for the team, not so much his growth

he’s still one of the best 13s in the world lol, Jesse Kriel is the only 13 i see performing better. rugbys changed a lot. this is only a hot take because of what we’ve seen from him on the wing
When he originally switched to centre for Auckland in the NPC he really did look the goods but even the stepping up a level to Super rugby I found him to struggle at centre and in all honestly I think ever since he has struggled to really deliver.Lots of incredible physical talent has been wasted on this positional move in my opinion.Just because you want to do something it doesn't necessarily mean its the thing you should do.
@@nickstjohn72 Maybe let's stop kicking so much. We kick more than the Boks and they're willing to start Willie and Fassie. Players I would pick Will over any day.
Will Jordan is not a test level fullback. 33 tries in 33 tests and yall wanna move him to Fullback why? Dmac, Beaudy, Jordie, all superior in that position. And they actually have a kicking game
I'm not even sure of Jordie as a 12. It seems like the coaches ask where they want to play and they play there. DMac not an international flyhalf, Will Jordan has to play wing. I am not too sure of other 12s at your disposal.
Great video! Can't stand the guy. Arrogance seems to be putting it lightly. He comes off as a me first guy always chest thumping after a try while all the heroes lay bloody and bruised on the ground getting him the ball. On the same note, he is Quality.
Thank you bro. My apologies for not going into details. I’ll take some time to delve into details soon. Just before I do, a quick pronunciation guide to put some respect on his name. Your mispronunciation of their surname: 1:21 Ee ❌ Oh ❌ Are ✅ Nah ❌ And then getting it right: 1:57 Yo ✅ Are ✅ Neh ✅ (neh as in the first wound of ‘near’) 6:30 This brother says his name right too 7:38 The commentators don’t even get it right. Yo ✅ Are ✅ Knee ❌ 17:41 Ree ✅ Are ❌ Co ✅ 🤦♀️ You’ve pronounced his name three or four different ways in this vid, so a little confused whether you’ve done this for comedic value (that’s not a dig at your genuinely funny joke) or genuinely aren’t aware of the pronunciation variations.
First question about your analysis is asking about your ascribing ‘arogance’ and ‘not being bumble enough’. Is this derived from dances he does after a try? Just curious where you’ve grounded this perspective.
He's all legs, his upper body is pathetic he wont be breaking tackles ever, 1:38 perfect player????? Jonah lomu was far better, Reiko is built like a golf player, he will have to run around everyone because no way is he running through them , too many skinny backs in the All blacks and just so happens to be the worst All blacks side of all time
What no NZ fans are willing to hear is that both Reiko and Jordan are overrated. And before you throw Jordan try scoring stats at me do the work and tell me his try scoring record vs tier one nations.
Overrated how? Besides being the guy to score the try doesn’t show much of the story most of the amazing moves dont result directly in tries. If you judged by scoring record only then you would think Habana was an all time great winger and Jonah was barely average
Shows how criminally under rated Richie was at 10. All blacks look aimless on attack without him.

he’s still one of the best 13s in the world lol, Jesse Kriel is the only 13 i see performing better. rugbys changed a lot. this is only a hot take because of what we’ve seen from him on the wing
Don't see how there's a better suited player in NZ to play centre. Noone with the mixture of speed, physicality and skill
Now Proctor is there, id be happy for him to go back wing.
9 Roigard
10 Mounga
11 Ioane
12 JB
13 Proctor
14 Faianganuku
15 Jordan
That's actually a legit AB backline. Still prefer Rieko at 13
He's already ruined it, there are already better wingers... And him at 13 is killing the AB's backline.
No proven international 13s apart from Rieko in NZ at the moment
Till this day ABS biggest mistake was letting Laumape go, should of gave him more chances
I totally agree. I reckon he would have wreaked havoc in the 2019 semi final. Would've been great to see him line up against Manu Tuilagi.
He worked on the things they told him to work on. Not sure why they stopped picking him
Wait sevu reece is 5ft10? I thought he was shorter 😂
True. Googled it and he's 5'9
Count how many times he doesn't make the gain line as a center - never
He's running into brick walls and still makes the gain line
Jordan should stay at Fullback
No kicking game at international level
The kicking's a bit of a worry
I like Jordan on right wing
He needs more time there
@@nickstjohn72 Maybe let's stop kicking so much. We kick more than the Boks and they're willing to start Willie and Fassie. Players I would pick Will over any day.
Swap Caleb Clarke to the centres and Rieko to the wing especially in the second half.
Or have them both on the wings to finish games. Lethal
You sir do not know what you're talking about. Rugby is about teamwork and is a team. There is no I in team
He should try full back
Rieko?!
Since when did centres score as many try’s as wingers 🤔🤷♂️
Nah boys… THIS is the AB’s best line up that’s never been:
10. Beaudy
11. Caleb
12. Rieko 👀
13. Proctor
14. Jordan
15. Jordie
22. ALB
23. DMac
I am not too sure of other 12s at your disposal.
nah mounga takes that 10 spot
Jordie and dmac are garbage
yeah Dmac right..haven't we seen enough of him at 10 ..
Just move him back to wing! He looked good against SA when he was moved to the wing
Need his physicality at the beginning of games, in the middle
Click-bait much?
Yes
He’s a very good centre. 🙄
ABS should play billy proctor more
He's a gun. I'm sure he'll get more time this year
He’s 100% better Winger than Caleb Clarke and probably should shift back to that position.
No way. Caleb Clarke's great
Disagree he's a good centre
🇫🇯 🇫🇯 🇫🇯 🇫🇯 🇫🇯 🇫🇯 🇫🇯
He's a great centre
Great video! Can't stand the guy. Arrogance seems to be putting it lightly. He comes off as a me first guy always chest thumping after a try while all the heroes lay bloody and bruised on the ground getting him the ball. On the same note, he is Quality.
He does a tonne of work on defence too
i garuntee you if Reiko was in another team he would be named best centre in the world. i feel like all black playeers are over judged
100% agree
3:30 SA won bronze twice
Shux. Was trying to be a smart @## thinking this year was the only time Blitzboks medaled, sorry
Another record is that he hasnever scored against Fiji in the 7s code. He was up against Viriviri and Rawaca.
Nice vid. Why so many similes lol
Thanks mate. Like what similes? Just kidding
He is not a Center..finally they notice it..plus he is cocky..
Needs to move back to wing
Na. He's NZ's best 13
@@BlackRugby no way
He's good in super rugby at centre but not the abs
He's nowhere near as bad at centre as he's made out to be
NZ Rigby to blame he was to flamboyant and culturally poured so they told him to calm down an took him out of the All blacks in his prime
Rieko?
Horrible take brother. Horrible.
how so bro?
Thank you bro.
My apologies for not going into details.
I’ll take some time to delve into details soon.
Just before I do, a quick pronunciation guide to put some respect on his name.
Your mispronunciation of their surname:
1:21
Ee ❌
Oh ❌
Are ✅
Nah ❌
And then getting it right:
1:57
Yo ✅
Are ✅
Neh ✅ (neh as in the first wound of ‘near’)
6:30
This brother says his name right too
7:38
The commentators don’t even get it right.
Yo ✅
Are ✅
Knee ❌
17:41
Ree ✅
Are ❌
Co ✅
🤦♀️
You’ve pronounced his name three or four different ways in this vid, so a little confused whether you’ve done this for comedic value (that’s not a dig at your genuinely funny joke) or genuinely aren’t aware of the pronunciation variations.
He’s scored against every T1 team he’s played against other than France
Overrated how? Besides being the guy to score the try doesn’t show much of the story most of the amazing moves dont result directly in tries. If you judged by scoring record only then you would think Habana was an all time great winger and Jonah was barely average
Will Jordan's anticipation and support line running is incredible.
Arrogance is genetic?
He's to conceited to play 13
But that's not a pre requisite to play centre
@@BlackRugby yes it is, cause you have to distribute the ball, conceited people want everything for them
Bo re wers 🤦
Sorry mate. Afrikaans not my first language
He never passes it when he needs to and a ball hog at international level isnt a good pick
Haven't seen many situations he's had an open man to pass too. He's always running at brick walls
Unfortunately not a team player the weak link not good enough to be in the all blacks
He's one of the best backs in NZ if not world rugby
@@BlackRugby rubbish hasnt played 1 good game in the black jersey over rated big time
18:41🤣🤣
hahaha we got the next RWC
The thing is, Rieko is only good enough, but not great at center. He seemingly hasn't improved his passing skills nor his defensive organization.
He Def isn't a 13
Why's that
AI generated slop
I'm offended
