      That method works wonders when your daily driver is an $800 car. Buy two at that price. Then you can't make excuses about needing it to be reliable. Keep them both running. If one fails to start one morning, grab the keys to the other one. After work, fix the broken one (or drop it off at a shop). The trick is setting your thresholds for repair expenses. If it breaks the threshold, it's time to get rid of it and get another hooptie.

    I got a nissan altima for 8k salvage with 17k miles
    Now it has 70k miles and only thing i did was new tires and brake pads

      The Chevy is to pull the trailer. He needs the trailer to live in while at work. Have you seen the 2019 tundra? One passed me the other day. It is a big truck. The wife probably liked the altama. And the caravan is a nice modest family mover.

      Purchased my used truck in cash ($8,000), thus far only major repair was for a $500 new radiator+install. Brakes, spark plugs, coil packs and oil changes I do my self. Recently test drove a newer F150 5.0, it was beautiful but they wanted 45k for it 😱. I'll stick to my 12yr old truck for now.

    I work at a mine. Lot of folks out here living with unreasonably low rent and regular bonuses buying too many, too expensive toys with motors that pile up in front of the house. Eternal payments and nothing saved for retirement. It's a mindset. 2008 is gonna happen again and it'll hurt big time.

      Probably like 400-750 a month for full coverage at most. So easily $5k a year. About $80 per vehicle in Texas for inspection & tags per year. So $320-400. $400 if the camper inspection & tags also amount to $80. Not too sure about that one.

    Sounds like the first thing they did when they found out they were pregnant with their 3rd child, was to get a van. They couldn’t even wait 6 months? Definite car addiction. They look for any reason to buy another vehicle. It sounds like he really woke up and realized is problem though, so he’ll be okay.

      I have three kids in car seats and they all fit in our 4 door Toyota Corolla. Now that is a bit extreme, and we're only doing it because my Pilot is in the shop, but it works and it's doable.
      People! You don't need a new minivan just because you're reproducing! Most of the time you can get by with the cars you have for alot longer than you think. My previous car was a $1700 Ford Expedition that I paid cash for that lasted me 4 years, all three kids, and 280k miles.

    Wow, $ I'm 65,000 in the hole with student loans. My biggest mistake was borrowing money for school. My class A CDL has been much more valuable than all 3 of my useless college degrees combined. I don't even hang them on the wall anymore. I just leave them in a box in the closet somewhere.

    I have 2 old vws I repair my self both worth about 6k together and I waste money modifying the vehicles
    She has a 2017 honda civic worth 15k and a vw beetle we bought for 500 dollars
    We love our cars and you dont have to spend an extraordinary amount of money to enjoy your vehicles

    I have a few friends like this. The solution that worked for one of them was to sell ALL BUT ONE vehicle. Do all the upgrades ALL AT ONCE. Then never spend any money on it again. If you make upgrades progressively there will always be something *next* . If you do it all at once you will have to be satisfied with your decision.

    I have a 2002 Mustang GT, paid in full.
    2002 Ford Explorer, paid in full.
    Both cars have the same engine, 4.6l V8.
    I spend a lot of time at the gas station but I love it!

    5 cars here between my dad and I. 2 are mine, 3 are his.
    '05 Tahoe: my daily
    '05 Escalade: road trip/highway use/backup vehicle
    '99 F250: dad's side work/towing truck
    '03 Mercury Mountaineer: his errand/grocery getter/backup vehicle for his wife (2-3x better on gas than the f250)
    '03 Escalade: his wife drives it
    Having a backup vehicle to your daily is well worth the extra $30-50 in insurance, and maintenance once in a while. It's like having an emergency fund, but as a vehicle. Take your time fixing the daily. You can wait til pay day, or not worry about finding a ride if the car has to sit torn apart for a couple days while you fix it between your shifts at work.
