Stay in the Woods,
Dan
You rock. So many of us never had a dad to learn this from. Greatful to have you, Sir.
Or, we had a dad, but we lived in a big city, and never spent any time in the forest.
Now you're really using your head Dan 🤣
😂😅
@@mikedendooven6484 joke was 100% out of love, I love Coalcracker Bushcraft
I did those emojis because I was thinking of the exact same phrase.
Dan is great!
I watch this as a guy who grew up on a farm and always outside building cubby’s and stuff. Always hands on fun and it all seems so natural to do this kind of thing. I’m glad it’s being passed on, even if it’s digital it’s important.. especially as the natural learning processes slip away.
Dude you're awesome, I'm trying to teach my kids all I know about what we all now call bushcraft..your videos really help. Thanks, my kids and I really appreciate.
Safety tip for the clueless, when you use this technique you are cutting the branch outside the leg not between!
Great tip Dan from a guy that has done a bunch of plumbing.
Lol.
Also, bug spray goes on you, bear spray goes on the bear. 😁
On the plus side they won't be able to breed and pass on the stupid.
My dad taught me this method years and years ago. I've taught it to my kids and we use it every year while camping. Thanks Dan for sharing your knowledge! knowledge
Good idea. Not owning a handy stump to take along, I’ll sit in my camp chair and employ the technique there.

@03:40 I know about the plumbers vise, but I am still recovering from some surgeries. I almost stopped watching, but thankfully saw this part. Thanks, Dan!
Love the sitting approach
Heck yeah. I have been using this for years and years. I learned it when I was a kid. Good vid!
Loved your latest collaboration with the townsends 🤘🏻
Most those pruning saws are meant to cut only on the draw stroke. If you just stick the stick around a small tree you will have pleanty of leverage to cut easy and affectivly. And you can cut branches larger than your wrist. And if you have a long branch to start with . The tail end can be placed on the ground so it becomes a helping hand with a lot of leverage. This is still a really cool trick I had never seen before. Very usefull. Thank you.
Please make videos showing what you describe.
@@mztwixed I plan to tommorrow.
@@mztwixed it's also quite safe. You are not cutting anywere near your body and your hand is protected by the tree.
Let me know if you watch it
@@razorsharp170watched it, good tips. 👍🏼
I snapped the tip from my pocket boy a few weeks ago, luckily just the tip like you. Great tip.🤠👍
I was hoping the tip referred to the tip less saw too, did the same to my gomboy falling a 8” diameter fir… too big for the little saw! 😂
Thank you. I am one of the older guy you were talking about. It is good to know that trick.
Another excellent video fancy pants! Always look forward to your knowledgeable and entertaining videos.
I like your videos. Not too long and pretty nice repetition of basic techniques.
Excellent video instruction on the Plumber's Vice technique for processing wood for camp & bushcraft, Dan.
It is also great that you added a demonstration of the seated (vs. squatting) version for those who would find this technique more comfortable (due to injury, fitness issues, etc.).
As always - a well constructed presentation with sound advice for practical applications. Kudos! 🇺🇸 🦅
That opening is one of the most over the top that I remember seeing you do. And that’s a lot because I go back and watch some of your old videos and those are a hoot because you were so serious, in a good way. That tool you just shared is over the top too. Thanks Dan
I have seen several, other people on several, other channels use, talk about and even specifically demonstrate the plumber's vice. You are the first I have seen talk about/demonstrate it in a way where you don't have to squat. Part of me wants to break a stick over my head for not figuring it out, myself - kind of one of those things that when you see it done you think, "Duh, that's simple - why didn't I figure it out on my own?" Still, as one of those people who can't comfortably stay in that squatted position for very long I really appreciate you showing the alternate method.
I’m getting a bit old and creaky and can’t easily squat these days, I didn’t think about using the sitting technique until Dan demonstrated it but I am really glad he did.
Stupid brilliant. I can't wait to try this. As a 'boomer' camper, this is a great addition to the 'toolbox'. Thanks.
Over 200 videos and I still can't get enough, thanks Dan!
Thanks for the old-knees mod, Dan! Great techniques, teaching & video, as always! (:
Glad you were careful to address possible knee issues. Great info!
I’ve only been subscribed for a couple months but you have become one of my favorite channels because I always learn something! Keep up the good work and may God bless you and yours!
Well explained. Great teaching! Thanks.
I’ll remember this when I really knee to. Memorable. This tip should really stick. I’m glad I saw it.
Good afternoon from Syracuse NY brother and thank you for sharing your adventures
Thanks for the alternative for those of us with knee problems! This is a good tip.
Congratulations on your recent song that went viral. Keep speaking the truth from your heart. You're saying what many of us dont have the words and ability to.
Great vid! Even better was the video with you and Townsends that a awesome!!
Simple and effective. Gonna have to try this out, thanks!
Hey Dan. , thanks for the new tool for the box!
Thanks Dan!
I like having tools in my toolbox. The more the better!
CLOSE!!! But not quite! Put the other end of that sick on your left thigh with the left knee on the ground, and place your right foot further back to lock the stick with both legs for even more leverage and stability. Hold the end of the stick on the other side of your left leg (if the stick is long enough.
I been using this trick for years in the woods and earlier in life (as an actual *plumber's* helper) on the jobsite!
Thanks Dan !
Very interesting as usual.
Glad you mentioned the branch diameter. It would seem obvious and intuitive but imagine you've canoed, portaged, and hiked well into deep woods. You attempt this with a large diameter branch and strain your knee in the process.
Knowledgeable and handsome! Great combination.
LOVE the new into.
Great tip, thanks.
I like that you included a method for what Blackie Thomas calls us "Silver Wolves". It's hard for me to squat after knee surgery. 👍
Dude. Your videos are great.
Thanks Dan
Thx Dan!
Great tip!
Another great trick for the toolbox my boy has been using this trick all weekend lol also great video you did with Townsends ( 7 Bushcraft Skills for the Frontier ) it was a like watching the old Dan videos top notch
A V notch cut in a downed log works well to wedge larger branches into to cross cut them too. I’ve even mad a short tri pod to hold logs in place
Great advise sir ❤
Thanks Dan ! 👊👍Appreciate you my friend 🙏
I love my Silky saw!
Dan, i must say,....your perfect👍🏻😉
Good tip Dan
Using the plumbers vise causes plumbers crack! 😂 Good tip on that seated version.
“Then we’re good to go.” Love the vids
I don't remember where I learned this technique but I use it all the time, super useful!
You may want to update your subscribers. I had to find you again from Townsends before I realized RUclips unsubscribed me from you for some reason. Speaking of please do more episodes with them, the last one a few days ago was awesome!
Great video, learned this at the Pathfinder survival school.
But if your knee caps (or joints in general) are prone to slipping, definitely only use the sitting on a stump method, so you have good control of the pressure under the knee.
Thanks!
Was doing this very thing last night. Never knew the technique had a name!
So much better than plumber’s crack! 😂
Thankyou for showing us the alternative plumbers vice, I'm one of those people who'd topple over if I tried it the original way😅
😊thanks Dan, the tree stump is best for my old legs. 😮 take care
Keep it going
Nice !
Thanks Dan. As an older less flexible outdoorsman i appreciate the alternate way lol
Oh My God! You cut a branch off of a living tree! Somewhere, a unicorn just died. Oh hang on; is that forest management? Cheers Dan; love your content. Never thought of that sitting position for a plumber's vice.
Informative video...as always. Is that saw a Silky?
Great🙌
Nice.
As an electrician, I used a variation of this that (to me) is more comfortable - curious how it compares. As a right-hander I would hold the pipe (in your case a stick) in my left leg and use my left hand to hold the stick down against the top of my right leg, cutting with my right hand. So the stick goes behind your left leg, pinched behind the knee, and extends out over the front of your right leg which is bent so it's like a table or sawhorse.
@3:45 I think it worked just as well while sitting on the stump because your left hand / top of left thigh / back of right knee provided 3-point bending; whereas @2:40 with the right knee very flexed, your left hand was between your 2 knees; didn't need as much leverage from the left hand in that case.
I knew before I even saw the squat. Us electricians have used it since we were in our first years of the trade, as for me was many decades ago. Anymore I try not to kneel or sit on my heel so much anymore. That many years of working on a ladder, climbing under stuff, and kneeling to put in hundreds of thousands of receptacles does wear on the knees, feet, and back.
I suggest using your buddies head to break sticks over. Sometimes he's gotta take one for the team.
Ace stuff and tip
When making cuts it's good to consider the health of the tree and safety of hikers and wildlife.
Deadhead cuts like the one you did direct plant energy down a dead end. Either there will be a cluster of growth or it will die leaving a stump.
Good cuts direct energy to create flow and strong branches leading upward.
An uncut branch has softer tips but a deadhead cut leaves stiff ends that can poke out an eye or puncture the skin.
Angled cuts are especially bad.
Wildlife at night can be injured by these.
Well meaning trail clearers often make these cuts leading to trails lined with spikes.
Cutting properly allows the tree to heal quickly and avoid rot and boring insects too.
Know your trees as some are rare and slow growing while others are common and in no danger.
Really enjoy your show and learning outdoor skills.
That opening though😂
Cool
Good stuff, I teach my students this on courses but I call it the bushman's vice 😅 you essentially get the same leverage without having to bend if your lucky enough to find an appropriate height forked tree or tree brach. Put the wood through the fork and lever it against the fork till it locks in place and cut.
It's a good technique and it's important that folks don't ever attempt to alter it by cutting between the knees. Lots of arteries in that triangle that can put you in the dirt if you slip.
Works great at 80, too!
Thank you. 64 YO and 40% of my knees left, great vid! God Bless and stay safe.
Rather than cutting the whole branch off a standing tree cut the branch to the lengths you want as you remove it
Good technique! Is that the new super mini Silky Boy? :)
Thank you! 👍👍🪵👌
Glad he considered us old crippled guys for an optional method 👍
Nice short legged pants, looks like you swapped legs with a Bluejay and he threw in the butt to boot!😂
The human body, the ultimate multitool.
if you really needed to cut a larger branch...3" or a bit more.....you can position the branch in the plumber's vise away from the bottom of the knee crotch so you don't get hurt...but then put the branch in both knees the same way to stabilize it further. A bit of a balancing act, but if you become too unstable you can put your back against a tree to improve stability.
Loved the video! I've had that problem for a while. I couldn't help but notice your shoes though. What kind are they?
just saw your other video. glad to see you lost the frontier hat 🤣🤣
👍👍👍
Cool tip Dan...... which saw were you using here ?
As someone with knee arthritis I approve this message.
Why don’t you cut it to length before you cut it off the tree?
have seen it at corporals Corner Chanel
best fire starter video. ,what works the fastest.
I like the folding saw. What make is it?
I thought the plumbers vise involved the butt crack, isn’t that what they are famous for 😂
👍❤
