Corporal, are you at least getting a sponsorship out of this?usually you get free products and some cash to post out a link to a good product.
I don't just do reviews on "free" gear. I also do reviews on gear that I believe works. Most of the gear on my channel I paid for. If there is no link then I don't care where you buy it from. Thanks for watching
Was I singled out and targeted or did I go to the field and test the item for myself........ big difference between watching someone and actually doing it yourself. Thanks for watching
Links to here on Amazon would be great
Corporals Corner do you think the laplander would be closer in performance if it was new? I'm sure the silky would still cut faster because, well, it's a silky. Just curious how much closer it would be with a new Laplander. After a year, what do you think? Thanks for the review
Had to get one. It costs me money watching you videos, lol.
Thanks for the no-nonsense videos. For someone who’s transitioning from car “glamping” to learning actual survival skills and homesteading, this channel is great. Thanks for putting emphasis on the basics like the 4W’s and taking the time to show your knowledge of knots, and thoroughly explaining what you’re doing and why. No fancy editing or music, just like what it’s like in the woods. You’re a great teacher and thanks again for imparting your knowledge! Cheers from cold as hell Canada. Subscribed and hit that bell.
I bought the gomboy because of this video and man, on the pull that thing eats wood for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and comes back for dessert. Thank you for your service and info OUTSTANDING.
Excellent review. I have had a Silky saw for about 12 years, now I have about four of them, I think they are the best out there. I currently use the Gomboy 240 with the curved blade, makes even more of a difference, pulls the wood right into the teeth.
Do you prefer the straight blade or the curved one?
How many years does one blade last for you? When do you have to switch
Good video and good points made buddy :) You might want to unscrew the nut & bolt, apply a bit of grease and tighten the bolt down firmly. This will prevent the bolt from loosening up over time. It can happen. If you mostly cut softer wood then the 7.5 and 8 teeth per 30mm is great. The Ultra Accel is a great saw.
You are the man. Thanks for all you do!
Lars recently did a video w/ that suggestion about the lubrication and how not to break the saws
Friction points loobed last longer than threadlock. I'm not aggressive just saying.
@@ianrfab24 Loctite keeps the nut from unscrewing. Lube keeps the pivot from binding, I use both on my silkys.
We must find a reason for Survival Russia to visit Corporal's Corner in the US ...or Corporal's Corner to visit Survival Russia in Russia ..can you imagine that.! ..what a collab.
We have these here in Canada at Lee Valley. $60.00 CAD or $46.00 USD. I've carried an 18 inch bow saw since 1970 whenever in the woods. Tucked between the bottom of my pack and sleeping bag. This one looks fairly compact to carry so will get one soon and can pass it on to my grandkids in a few years. I use varsol or turpentine to clean sap off and oil with CLP. I've used similar small saws occassionaly, but this is much better. Thanks a million for taking the time to do the demo. Cheers.
Master Tracker sounds like you had 1 silky in your life, and it broke.
Tyvk, JayTee Hee! Much of my very best "outdoors" stuff is from there, so idk why it didn't for to me to try there 1st!
Could you use bees wax as a protector and lubricant ?
Some sort of solvent is crucial for cleaning the teeth out after cutting fat wood. A brass brush like what you would use for cleaning guns is useful too...
Good video and opinions Brother. Nothing beats a Silky. Ive used one for years and they still amaze me.
Do you have to sharpen them? If so how often?
@@samramirez9762 Nope. You can't sharpen them. You replace the blade eventually. It's easy.
You can sharpen some with a file. But not the ones hardened on the tip of the teeths. You probably could do it with a small flat diamond file. But I don't know if something like that exists.
Silky Sharpening File
That vice technique is excellent - I learned something.. I was once holding a branch with a (leather-gloved) hand, cutting with my Silky Zubat. The saw jumped the kerf and landed on my thumb. No permanent damage, but It took an easy hour for it to stop bleeding.
Silky saws are sharp.
I will be teaching the vice technique to my Scouts. Good note about the saw jumping and kicking your hand. That has happened to me on a campout. Cut kept opening up and bleeding during the trip.
I just got my Gomboy in the mail today. I ordered it after watching your video. The first thing I did was go outside and try it out. This saw is outstanding. Thanks for doing the video because it saved me from wasting money on a piece of junk.
Thank you for that review. I have the Laplander now, and have been wanting to upgrade to the Silky Saw, but was unsure of which one to get. You answered all my questions, and Now I'll be getting the Silky Gomboy 240.
I'm a working arborist at 61 years old. Been a silky user for many years. Best saws out there!
That Silky's a weapon.
I watched your video on making your own bucksaw, and am in the middle of this process. It's hard to keep up to the corporal !
Outstanding !
Outstanding!
Thanks for all the comparison cutting between the saws. As alwsy explain exterme well. Thanks for all the work.
I watched this when you first published it. It took some time and contemplation but I ordered a Silky Gomboy 240 to test against my Bahco Laplander, I now carry the Gomboy in my pack. Thanks for the review.
Just picked one up because of this video and love it. Best saw I've ever used.
Just bought my dad one. We use the big boy at work, best saws I’ve ever used
Thanks Marcus Fenix! Im forsure going to buy one of these. Im extremely new to bushcraft and outdoors in general. I cant wait to get started!
Great move. Picked up a Silky Big Boy in 2009 for working in the woodlot and around the homestead. I was really tired of saws that didn't last. After pruning apple trees in an orchard and working for a city's forestry department. I had experienced too many failures. I bought a Fanno 13" fixed saw and then theSilky Big Boy and a Silky Pocket Boy for small work. Wonderful tools. Enjoy
36 years spending time in the outdoors and iv never thought to hold a log with my leg like that.
Your the man Corporal!
I bent my laplander last week. Lasted 5 years, so can't complain.
Was guna get another laplander, but I so need one of them Silky saws.
Thanks and take care brotha
The silky will bend/break faster then the bahco
I’ve been considering purchasing the Silky and you showed some good reasons to go ahead and get one. Thanks for showing the useful holding technique with the calf and back of quad. Very useful!
Looks awesome saw this video 2 years ago. A good hand saw boss. Thanks for your time and insight on saw , I had a Corona hand saw when I was a landscaper many years ago
I've had a Gomboy in my toolkit for years. Its an excellent saw. holds up well.
I like the laplander for chores around the camp, and basic woodworking. if I'm going to cut up firewood for the winter I'm going to need a lot more than 9 and 1/2 in hand saw. I'm also going to build a stand for cutting logs. And I'm sure you weren't testing a five-year-old laplander against a brand-new silky.
The difference in results was so night and day, there was no need for any additional demonstrations. Corporal Corner, you literally enrich all of our lives by just exposing us to even the smallest snapshots of your own. I'm glad your channel is growing, and we'll support you every step of the way. Thank you!
Well, Corporal's Corner, that's some very, very compelling evidence, and you're the first I've ever seen use the "plumbers' vice". Thank you for both valuable lessons, as well as yet another excellent reason to love Lee Valley (where Canadians go for all things awesome, including Silkies)!
So i found this channel looking for a modern alice pack style pack, saw your helicon tex matilda pack review and I still use your reviews as a base line for my equipment decisions. The way you explain equipment just makes sense to me better than most. I hope things look up for your channel soon.
Thanks for the bracing technique for cutting. I usually use my snowmobile but I’m going have to try that 😊❤️🇺🇸❄️☃️🛷⛺️
another outstanding video. I have learned so much from this guy. being a beginner his videos are a great asset to me
These Silky's are outstanding. I have two of them. They cut like a hot knife through butter.
I like that term "plumber's vise" funny, and a good trick.
Just ordered my one today after watching this. Thanks from Australia.
Hey mate, how has it faired on dry eucalyptus?
Another one of your superb videos. I needed that reminder about the "plumber's vice." Many thanks!
Ive been looking for a saw best suited for me. You've sold me on the Gomboy for my pack, much like the Arcturus thermal tarp and soon to be delivered four season Ecotek sleeping pad(sleeping on the ground hurts more than it used to). Took a minute searching through comments to find which blade configuration was used in the video, but I did find it. Medium.
I've watched your videos for years, found them a good way to help me expand on skills once I returned from Iraq. But this being my first time commenting. Fantastic work. Charlie Mike. Thank you for your service.
Outstanding demonstration! Cutting that big log down by the creek was quite impressive...
It’s gonna be my next saw for sure. Thanks for another great clip! 👍
Thank you Corporal, you had me at "as I get a bit older I just want things to be easier" lol. Good video as always.
Lars from Survival Russia also uses Silky saws almost exclusively and he hasn't had any issues. Great video sir!
@@QuantumMech_88 what do you do to bend a pull saw??? My guess is to use it incorrectly..
I dont know how you bent a Tomboy unless your using it like a crazy man. Ive had one for about 6 years and use it for firewood at least once a week every week and it is still in great shape. But then again I’m not using my Gomboy to baton with either. I don’t understand some of the ridiculous expectations some folks have…take care of a tool and it will take care of you.
The Silky Gomboy is the next piece of equipment that I am getting for my bug out bag! Been putting one together. Great tool! Thanks for the info.
You're one of the few that with a brief explanation shows a tool is only good when the person using it knows how to use it and understand its design requirements.
Nice, concise review. I just got my Gomboy 210 today. Also comes with fitted case, great for my RV. My Dad used to say, "when you you cut your own wood, you warm yourself twice". But
at my age, I want more warmth from the fire than cutting the firewood.........
I have carried a Bahco Laplander for years, they are currently from £17 to £25 in the UK, it fits in my pocket no problem. The Silky Gomboy 240 is about £40 in the UK with replacement blades at about £30. Excellent review, as I get older and want to stay outdoors I think it is time to try one out.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I was pleasantly surprised with my first Silky’s performance, and still smile whenever I use one! They are amazing tools.
Silky saws cut amazingly well, and with little effort. The cut is surprisingly smooth and straight, and you can cut very thin slices from trees. Need a coaster or wooden trivet? No problem!
Silky makes many sizes of saws, with teeth from fine to extra large.
My go-to saw for branches and small trees, is my BIGBOY 2000, extra-large teeth. I carry it in the Silky sheath, on a belt. It is long enough, to reach higher brances.
Another BIGBOY 2000, stays in my truck - for trees blocking a road. For my Ribz front pack, I carry the lightweight Silky F180, large teeth.
I just got a Katanaboy 500; that saw is a beast! The biggest tree I’ve dropped with the Katanaboy, was over a foot in diameter. And that saw is so long, you can reach high branches; one of the benefits of a folding saw.
I buy direct from Japan, on eBay: best prices and worth the shipping time. You can get replacement blades, should you ever need one.
Someone on RUclips, showed how tough the Laplander blade was: and indeed, it would be difficult to break. The Silkys blades can bend or break, if you don’t use proper pull-saw technique. I never have bent any of mine, but wouldn’t be surprised if I did - someday. I’d just straighten it, and keep cutting. The vastly improved cutting of the Silkys, is well worth the short time - to get used to the cutting stroke.
The BIGBOY 2000’s extra-large teeth, will sometime catch on small bushes - but it was intended for larger wood. If you want a Silky for more detail oriented bushcraft chores, you may want to consider a smaller saw, with medium teeth.
Best of luck!
TY Corp. You have helped me make up my mind on a smaller field saw.
Yes I'm a Silky guy myself, 500, F180 X2, BIG Boy 2000. Great saws, that 500 man is an Ork slayer. Gotta love that impulsed hardened steel. Thanks for the video
Thanks Corporal! I was just in the market for a new saw! Your review sold me!
Wow!!! Adding to my kit. That Gomboy cut through in less than half the number strokes as the other saw. Excellent product review. Bravo.
Very cool! I liked the plumber's vice, and the sparks from the rod and saw! Thanks, sir!
After watching CC use the Silky 170 I was hooked.. I bought it /£32..Took it on a trip and was amazed by it's performance.. Love it. Thanks CC for making me aware of it.. Merry Christmas bro 👌 👍
Thanks for drawing my attention to silky saws, since watching your videos, and lowering of restrictions have jumped back into nature, so good, back into hiking but as a former gardener I had never come across silky saws as not sold in my state, will order one online next week, keep up the awesome videos, Daz. From Australia. Keep well
Yeah brother, Ive been using a Gomboy for some years now and my first blade is still top notch. I’d say ive had mine 5-6 years and use it at least once a week to cut firewood. The blade still cuts like it did new. Also the cuts compaired to the laplander are so much smoother. Its like the cut edge feels polished, from the quality of the blade.
Vienas išėjimas i miška ir iš 240 patapo 210
Great video. The comparison between the two convinced me that I need to get a silky. I’m getting older too. Life isn’t as easy as it once was. I love all of your videos. It’s one of my favorite and trusted channels.
Semper Fi
Conserving your all important time and energy - silky saws are a winner.
Ordering one right now on Amazon for $35 for my bugout / camping bag. They look like they work great. Thanks for the review Corporal.
Hi Shawn. I just re-watched this old video. I seems like you have switched back to the Baccho saw. Is this the case?? Of course the obvious question is; if so, why?? I have heard that the Silky blades are harder and more likely to break. Love to hear your opinion on the subject. Thanks.
Gomboy is a great saw. Went with the Super Accel 21 myself. Another great saw.
Thanks - I've just bought one of these (arrived yesterday), but not used it yet. Good to see a comparison from someone with more experience than me. I definitely think I made the right purchase after seeing your vid.
Going for a camp this weekend - looking forward to trying it out.
Update after using it?
Fully agree with the Silky saw. Haven’t tried the 240. I got the Gomboy 300 and was immediately impressed. I did an impromptu saw comparison on my FB with 3 other saws and it was Gomboy all the way. Thanks for the great vid.
Sir,
I moved to the silky saw a while back too! I have a long way to go before I can even get near to your expertise but I am moving in the right direction.
Thanks again.
Silky is the way to go for sure. We have used the fool out of ours and it still works great. Good demonstration and I like the plumbers vice you did. Will have to try that. I work construction but never saw it done in the past.
Keep up the good work. Subscribed!
Terry
Am fixing to order one. I've got one I acquired at Walmart, but it's nowhere near as good as that one. When I bought it I was in a hurry and didn't really check out other saws. You have some great information on your channel. So if the silky gomboy 240 is on your Amazon page, then that's where I'm going to get it from. Thank you for your service and for the great information you give on here.
I love the way the 240 can also lock into two positions. Great review of an awesome saw. Thanks 👍
I have been using a craftsman say for years and just purchased a silky pocketboy 170mm i am impressed with how well it works.
this review is just OUTSTANDING..!!!! to the point.. fantastic display of technique.. and a Great representation of both saws.. Thank you.!!!
That was a really good wood retention technique you used, it was very secure and as you said, it kerps the saw away from you, many thanks for sharing.
I'm waiting for new stocks of the Silky Gomboy Curve Outback Saw so that I can add it to my Gransfors Bruks Mini Hatchet and Mora Companion Heavy Duty Stainless knife.
The 240mm Silky works better and faster whilst burning fewer calories, which make it ideal for processing sufficient stocks of the right sized wood for tent stove and/or campfire.
The Silky BigBoy 2000 Outback Saw makes an excellent pairing with a Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe, being compact, lightweight and extremely capable.
I switched to silky about two years ago. I have the Big Boy 2000 and a few F180's. Just superb saws I'll never use anything eles. Great video. 👍
I love saws that cut on the pull! Bought a Japanese hand saw as a young carpentry / fine woodworking student. The best type of saw cuts on the pull versus the push! Love love love! I used that japanese hand saw to cut everything! Very efficient. I love a tool that is elegant and works well.
Thank you very much for this video. A practical example of how well the Gomboy works, ordered one through your link, great idea. Keep Broadcasting!!
That was OUTSTANDING!! Very memorable demonstration. Thanks sir.
Hi Corp, I also used a Bahco Laplander for a long time and seen you using the Silky. Once I seen how good it cuts I have also purchased one.
Wow! Friggin amazing saw! Gonna pick one up. Thank you for the awesome tip. YOU ROCK!!!
Wow , you make look so easy, Gomboy 240, thanks for the tip
I love mine! (Also a 240)
I landed trees with a diameter bigger then my leg.
But i mostly use it to keep my fishing spots nice and clean
the Bahco is a great saw, but you are right - Silky´s can cut the same wood with less effort, and are still faster. Thanx for confirming my own thoughts and exeriences!
Awesome review corporal, I’ve never used the silkys.
Only the baco or fiskers folding saws.
Everyone I know that uses silkys seem to love them.
Another quality video mate.
Cheers.
I have the Gomboy 170. Excellent saw. Small and compact. Does the job.
Perfect I’m getting into bushcrafting in Quebec winter never did it yet I think it’ll be ideal for me!
I just bought a lowes garden saw thinking it would do the same thing as the rest. Lesson learnt. Amozoning tomorrow.
at 4:40 im blown away at how fast the silky is cutting that wood, it goes through it like paper!
Another good video. I like how you don't disrespect the entry-level kit.
Yep great little saw , I’ve been packing one for a couple years now 👍👍
Thanks for posting this! I had been trying to figure out which folding saw to get to take with me on camping trips when I came across your video. I am extremely impressed with the quality of the Silky Gomboy.
Dear SIR, this is exactly my opinion! - All items you tell us, really work. This shows me, you are'nt just a movie-maker... Thank YOU for all your wonderful videos!! Great respekt, best wishes and good hunting! Hubert Gleiss & MaXL ( my loved dog, Alp. Dachsbracke ) Wegetal 1, A-3192 Hohenberg, Lower Austria
Hey corporal I am from Denmark and I am in love with your videos and I want to go to the army when I am 18 you really inspire me to think out of the box and I have learned stuff from you so thank you very very much keep up the good work
Ohh thank you for the trick with the firesteel !
I was wondering when you were going to make the switch.. I have a big boy. Absolutely love it! I also bought a sheath and an extra blade. Yes they are a bit pricey, but you are going to pay for quality.
great review, awesome guy, awesome channel! geting a silky for the apocalypse !
It is all in the design of the teeth. I discovered Japanese wood saws when staying with a Japanese carpenrpter's family back in 1988. World of difference! Good review!
They need to have this on the blade."The best saw blade in the world, proudly made in Japan".
Wicked nice induction hardened teeth. Lots of kerf to shed sawdust. Cut a lot of electrical mechanical tubing using the plumbers vice. It teaches you balance. That gomboy looks very well made.
This totally helped me decide between these two saws. thanks brother
You are correct sir. I recently and reluctantly switched out my Laplander for a Silky after trying out my friend’s Silky. The Silky is by far a superior folding saw. Now I’m thinking about getting the Big Boy 2000. You could do some serious shelter building with it and it would be much easier than using an axe. I think it’ll cut 8” to 10” logs (maybe larger) pretty easily.
I went from a made in china from walmart folding saw to a Bahco, and that was amazing, then I tried a Sikly Gomboy, and now I know why I prefer the silky, its even better than the Bahco.
..Yup, Love the 180 for EDC, and also got a 'Katanaboy 600' last year for Camp.. Wow.. Who needs a chainsaw? :) It's Beast..
I bought one of those made in China saws myself a very long time ago. I still have it because it uses reciprocating saw blades. The saw itself is surprisingly strong and I've never had any problems with it. And being able to switch out a variety of blades makes it a pretty versatile small saw.
Silky saws are *much better* than a Bahco/Kenshaw saw, a buck saw, and a bow saw.
The Bahco/Kenshaw saw is popular with survival schools because it is reasonably effective, cheap,
& they can sell them with a small profit at their outdoor stores.
Silky saws are the top saw in Japan (I lived there for 9 years) & there is no better saw in the World for outdoor jobs.
Bahco has never been a great saw but is popular for its price and color.
I prefer the bahco. You know what they say about opinions though
Thank You for your service sir and thank you for another great review.
Ditto. I will be getting a 240.
Just found your channel and subbed, this is my 1st comment, love the cutting speed but what sold me was the ferro rod demonstration on the back spine of the saw, just get your tinder bundle together and a few sparks later, you have fire.
Great video.
I've been using a Silky Pocket 130 for a number of years now and like it a lot.
I'll have to get a Gomboy 240 now, for my long-term bag.
Corporal Corner had done it again !! Gamboy 240!!! Good job!
Out of all the folding saws I have tried out I think my favorite has always been the corona saw I've tried bahco laplander honestly I really didn't like that one we'll see if the silky saw changes my mind because it's on its way to the house I won't know until I try it but it's really going to have to be a outstanding saw to beat the corona
Let me know when you tried it please?
How did you like that Silky? I'm also considering upgrading my much loved Corona to one. I'm hoping the blade lasts longer than the Corona, which I have to replace every year.
The silky is definitely the better saw. I used those same two saws and came to the same conclusion that you did. Now for lite work I use the Silky Pocket Boy and the Gomboy for the heavy stuff. The Laplander has been retired.
Great vid....i have the Bahco coming, didnt know about the Gomboy. Good stuff...
Nice review. I've used a Gomboy 240 for a couple of years coppicing trees in my 'food forest.' For my money it and a Boreal 21 bow saw are the perfect 1-2 combination for light duty wood work in a camping/survival environment.
Significant performance difference. Thank you for your instruction and dedication to making these videos.
