People who follow Jainism are called Jains. The main belief of Jainism is that people can reach spiritual enlightenment through non-violence and reducing harm to all living things. They can do this by never being violent in their thoughts, words, or actions.
Historians believe that Jainism began nearly 3,000 years ago in eastern India. It originated from the same region as Buddhism. The first Jain in historical record was a teacher called Parsvanatha who lived in the seventh century BCE.
