The word Vir is Latin and it can mean the following things:
    1 man
    2 husband
    3 hero
4 person of courage, honour, and nobility
And "transit", correct me if I'm wrong, is not only moving from place to place, but also to change, evolve, transcend.
So, I would translate the title of this episode as "Thus a man is made" or "Thus Vir becomes a hero".

I love this translation thank you. I always thought of it as meaning “Thus goes Vir” which I took to mean “Vir being Vir” or “Vir becoming Vir” but your construction puts it together much more elegantly.

Let's hand it to Ivanova. While we have Sheridan, Delenn, Kosh more focused on the big picture, which makes sense, she totally stepped up here and took lead of the practical/immediate situation. A great war is looming in the horizon, but the Narns are suffering right now, and someone had to do something. Vir deserves all the credit for starting the refugee operation and for the 2000 lives he saved, but unfortunately he got exposed, it would happen eventually. As an outsider, Ivanova saw the opportunity to continue his work and made it happen. I love how much she cared, and I love how she took that concern and turned it into action, with no performative "thoughts and prayers". I assume this was a few days/weeks after the rebirth ceremony, so maybe saying what she needed to say and letting go of what happened with Talia had a positive effect on her, even if her dream shows she's still a bit unsure of herself.

@@ianstopher9111 I thought about it, but it was inevitable. Vir's situation was a precarious one amongst the Centauri, doing all that alone, he's still learning the secrets of the diplomatic/espionage trade, and he didn't confide in anyone in the B5 crew or Delenn, who would definitely be on his side. Unfortunately, the Narns with the blood oath against his to be wife were what actually got him exposed, them attacking Vir was was made Ivanova dig deeper. I think she was quite aware that all she did was her job, and did it well. But yes, perhaps it was "being good at my job backfired, I'll fix it by going the extra mile".

Yes, this episode is not the best of the season, but it is really good -- and troubling at once. It shows more of the problems with Centauri marriages in general, and how wrong people get put together. Even then Vir shows his true colors in many ways. This is the "Soul Mates" of the season, and imo, deeper than Soul Mates, and when it does it turn to the dark side, it really shows the full point of the episode. So, I like it a lot, but wouldn't put it in the top 5....

It's one thing to act ethically and honorably while you are hovering above a stone aged planet in the flagship of Starfleet, it's quite another when you are one slightly befuddled man trying to make a stand against his own empire to save a handful of their hated enemy. I like how they portray Vir as lacking in most common heroic traits. He's not well-spoken or handsome or traditionally badass in any way, but he's brave as hell.

I like very much for this episode. Londo was just a blast. This is not what is called important episode, but it does play well for previous episodes but also things to come, albeit missing this episode wouldn't ruin anything but you missing Londo duelling with a bug in a big perspective. This however does give bit more information about Centauri gender roles but also hints very strong upbringing for women. Females for Centauri... are mostly... Political currency. You can marry them and bring houses together and create alliances. Just like Princess were in medieval times.

    • @Asehpe

Yes, despite calling themselves the Centauri Republic, they're pretty much an empire, comparable to European kingdoms from the middle ages up to the 18th, 19th century. Marriages link houses, women are the bridges that serve this purpose, and a political actor tries to play his cards (the young women and/or men in his house) to the maximum advantage of his house.

"Sic transit gloria mundi": thus passes the glory of the world. It's a phrase used in papal coronation ceremonies to remind the new pope that earthly honours are fleeting. Seems quite similar to the "memento mori" (remember you are mortal) that was whispered to Roman generals during a Triumph. As for Vir, his name just means "man" in Latin. He is the everyman, the man for all seasons.

Babylon 5 had something in common with Star Trek, even the episodes that aren't particularly memorable or even important, they almost always have something in it that is entertaining. There are dozens of scenes I remember from DS9 and Voyager that I couldn't tell you which episode they're from. (Odo telling Bashir he might have won an award, because he heard it from his friend's, brother's, roommate's etc etc etc comes to mind. Such a great scene, that I couldn't tell you which episode it's in, and I have to search through entire seasons to find it every time.) B5 could just be FUN sometimes, even if the episode was completely forgettable.

"Vir believes in her ability to change." Yes, Vir is quite a likeable guy, isn't he? He's ready to expect the best from people. I think this was already visible before, and here in this episode it shines bright. Vir has a heart, which is not a frequent thing among his fellow citizens at that time... Lyndisty is a more typical example. I imagine she is here to show us how 'normal' people with 'good' hearts can still be horribly cruel -- I remember comments I've heard about how some Nazi commanders were good fathers and cared for their families... Which is why I think Vir doesn't simply decide to hate her, as he did Mr. Morden. He sees that, as he put it, her ideas ... need rehabilitation.

She is the epitome of a person raised with a deeply ingrained perception of superiority/ inferiority between species/ races. "They " are something completely different than "us". Savages, barely more than animals, etc. In reality, a lot of Sci-Fi deals with this concept if we meet another , more advanced species, that we may simply be seen as vermin in the way of their pursuits. We are at the point in the show when even the "so so" episodes are good, and serve as a respite from the high octane energy of some of the more intense episodes (although I would argue this one is better than just so so). This will likely rank nearer the bottom of the list but it is a very memorable episode, and one I never have trouble recalling the events in it. lol
2 things bother me, one, though the scene with Londo and the bug are meant to be funny, and on first watch they are, but I can't help but think this is how he treats the Narns, as bugs to be squashed, and then it is less fun...
The second is a gaff... According to JMS there was a line accidentally cut from the dialog saying that the Narn Lidesty had attacked was recovering in med lab. So not a spoiler since it was a mistake and is not revealed at any other time. But without knowing that, it kind of leaves you wondering what happened to the second Narn.

And that's one of the things that make Babylon 5 what it is. The 'little' characters are not forgotten. They get their own stories on the side, their own development.
Remember when Vir tried to apologize to G'kar? Not knowing what the former Emperor wanted to do? Well, G'kar knows it and while he probably appreciated Vir's gesture he couldn't forgive.
On the other hand, now there are 2,000 Narn that probably know or will learn why they are still alive. Also, remember the prophecy that Vir will become Emperor? If that happens, who knows where this could lead to.
But I digress. Vir already knows too much of what has been going on behind the curtain. How he tried to stop Londo and failed which caused the death of so many Narn. It's no his fault in any way, but guilt isn't always logical. But he had to do something.
