    I binge this series usually once a year. No matter how many times I see this episode, even in this kind of truncated form, I cry like a baby for half the show. Also, a bit of trivia for ya'. At the decommissioning ceremony, the guy who throws the big switch to shut the station down was played by J. Micheal Straczynski, the creator of the show.

    I would like to disabuse you of some notions you have concerning B5. I do not mean that to sound rude, so please do not take it as such. JMS shopped B5 around for a number of years. One studio he brought it to was Paramount. They passed on the project. However, later in that same year they began development on a new Star Trek series; that series was DS9. The similarities between B5 and DS9 are there not because JMS stole them from Star Trek. They are there because Paramount stole them. They practiced the same medicine with Discovery. A young game developer in Egypt had spent years working on a game that featured a black female protagonist whose best friend was a Rubenesque red-head with long and very curly hair. She had a pair of friends in the shape of an interracial gay couple, and they travelled through the universe using giant teleporting tardigrades! Even the character designs looked like Burnham, Tilly, Hugh, and Stamets! Now, I am a Trekkie. I was born in 1971, two years after TOS was cancelled and gone into syndication. On my birth I was already a third generation Trekkie! LOL Out of all the series in the Franchise so far my absolute favorite is DS9. But I have to say that B5 is, in my opinion, one of the best series (let alone science fiction series) I have ever watched. Paramount has very sticky fingers when it comes to their programs it appears. Back when B5 first aired I refused to watch it as I saw it being derivative of DS9, but the show dragged me in anyway. And when I learned that the creative process was the reverse of what I had originally thought, the show became even better in my mind. I just wanted you to know that the concepts in B5 were the original and DS9 is based on it and not the other way around. Thanks for reading this little rant. Have fun, y'all.

    I was first gen trekker. I saw it on prime time when I was in kindergarden and first grade. Star Trek was IT for decades. But then came along this obscure little show called Babylon 5. The writing impressed me, the emerging storyline pulled me forever in. It was prophetic in many ways in the world, I went through a marriage, divorce and family breakup during that five year span on TV. Star Trek looked bland and cheap in comparison to B5. So, I think Babylon 5 is better.

    As soon as a human being is being unnecessarily hurt a bystander has the right to interfere. All humans have emotions and pain receptors. We're born with empathy, people who forsake their empathy to hurt another person when there are logical steps to avoid that are objectively wrong and that's why people with empathy regardless of their morals will feel bad when seeing an ally/friend/family member hurt. It's a measure of your level of empathy how badly you personally feel when another person is hurt when there is no other logical option. Barbaric cultures purposefully ignore this which is why emotions other than rage and to an extent lust are viewed as worthless. It's not ignorant to call out barbaric behaviour.

    I actually used to be really bothered by how easily Danirl falls into the "relationship" with the princess. I've since payed more attention to the episode and realized that he's walking a tight rope with someone who has all the power over him and his friends. The scene with the kiss literally involves a conversation about how she is keeping his friends prisoner to control him because she has a crush on him. After that kiss he hops in the sarcophagus and you can SEE the change in him. From there on he's buying into what she's selling. They could have made the tight rope a little more apparent, but if you pay attention it is literally right there in the lines we're given for Daniel himself.

    Messages I got from this episode: 1. Never piss of Teal'c, he can hold a grudge longer than you will live. 2. A Teal'c who smiles is always something special. 3. Area 51 is a warehouse for cheap copies of alien technology. The real alien technology is already somewhere else. I have to take a look on ebay. 4. It is always fun to see how the world outside the SGC is. How the people live on this side of the gate. It makes it more real and less scifi, unlike StarTrek, and it helps the world building. 5. There are people brave/stupid enough to jump through a Stargate knowing they can never come back to earth. P.S. I like this episode.

    The leader of the civilization-of-the-week was talking like a cartoon, which is possibly my main issue with this show. For a premise that allows you to visit ancient human civilizations still living elsewhere the same way they used to live on Earth a long time ago, the show can get very, very lazy with their portrayal, and turn many of them into cartoons. We get way too many princess-like figures who look like 1998 models with 1998 make-up, we get, like you pointed out, a complete disparity between outfits and scenery, it can look quite ridiculous, and I'm not saying this with a 2025 mind, this already looked silly to me when I was 17 in 1998. Now, I get artistic liberties, I get that it's a 22 episode season show, so the filming is quite rushed, and I am obviously not advocating for unatainable levels of historical accuracy, but perhaps they could have afforded a just little more care in this aspect, so it wouldn't look so jarring. Still, the show did very well, and had 10 seasons, so I know this is possibly just a personal issue of mine. But yeah, the missed opportunity to take a deeper interest in all these past civilizations vs. the cartoony approach we got will always count as a big negative to me. Good thing the show has enough positives to kinda balance that. Kinda.

    • @rlupi2529
      @rlupi2529 2 дня назад

      They did that because thats where the connection to the second gate was from. If they do the jump from another gate on a random planet there's a low chance it'll jump to the next gate while doing it from where they connected to the second date they have a better chance.

    • @m.h.6470
      @m.h.6470 2 дня назад

      @@rlupi2529 No, that is not how that works and that is explained in the show. The jump happens to the closest gate, no matter what. It is shown both on SG-1 and SG-Atlantis multiple times in the whole series. So it is entirely pointless to go through that gate.

  • @TheFireMonkey
    @TheFireMonkey 3 дня назад

    Well, even if the President assures you that the 2nd gate is shut down, keep in mind the President is the most powerful individual in the government, but the executive branch is supposed to be co-equal with 2 other branches - are there things that the president does not know about? Yes, there are - at least there are supposed to be. The system was designed from the start of the country to ensure no one man had too much power - it's all about checks and balances - and then there are things being done in secret that are not supposed to be happening.

    The one difference between the pilot episode and the series it became that I just can not accept as being the same thing at all is the presentation of what Vorlons are. Vorlons as we came to know them later would never have the traits they need for this poisoning plot to happen... being tricked by a changling net... being willing to expose any part of themselves as he did for the hand-shake... being vulnerable to poisoning (by younger species who know would later know nothing about Vorlon physiology)... needing, and being willing to accept, treatment by a younger species (who would thus need to be able to find a vein & stick a needle in it)... being willing to stoop to a useless younger-species ritual like hand-shaking... maybe even having anything like hands at all... it's just impossible to believe that JMS wanted the Vorlons to be what they became later on and would've introduced them to us as this instead.

    • @Babylon5FortheFirstTime

    • @lionofhighpark
      @lionofhighpark 4 дня назад

      Yes and no. Yes, the idea of the Vorlons nature and physiology did change as the series evolved, but the poisoning plot was part of a dropped thread that would have made more sense in the reveal. In an earlier version of the story arc (had Sinclair stayed around) this would have tied into the rogue Minbari warrior clan who protected Deathwalker and likely had access to Shadow tech, explaining how they could attempt to poison a Vorlon.

      No. Most will be around the hour ish mark. This was recorded a long time ago, well before we figured out our new format.

      @Babylon5FortheFirstTime thank the great maker. You have spoilt all other podcasts for me, and I like to listen when driving to and from work.

    Was that it? Feelin' a little short-changed here, guys! At least you could've watched the original version with Stewart Copeland's score - I still love the wailing guitar I think just before we go into the opening credits? Oh well, I suppose I could go and watch Jabba the Trump's "coronation" . . . Nah! I think I'd rather watch 'TKO' again! (What am I saying?!? 😱)

      We get that. This was our true second watch for this episode/movie, and we wanted to be true to that. Next week is far more in depth.

    9:32 Minbari cannot lie, except to save another's honour; in this case, saving the honour of the dead Minbari who could've given Sinclair a lead to work out what happened to him at The Line.

      Yeah, I think we have plenty of example where even that isn’t true. But it’s nice to know it’s a value they at least give lip-service too. Kinda like the Vulcans in Star Trek.

    As someone who is a huge fan of B5 and the community, I have to say, the community of Firefly might be slightly cooler. But B5's is incredibly sweet.

      Firefly is okay, was great when it came out, but Serenity kinda ruined it :/ my mate said watching B5 was like a religious experience lol it's less a "community" imo, and more just like... people that have ascended lmao i think sometimes people make things greater than themselves, kinda accidentally - i like to think it's the universe acting through them ;) but B5 is very much one of these epic flukes, and it ends up as something magical.

      @@CallumArmistead I was talking about the community specifically. Firefly community is able to keep the franchise alive decades after it was canceled. Maybe not on the air, but in memory. In conventions. For a show that was canceled half way through, that's just amazing. And I have rarely had bad experiences interacting with Firefly fans. Can't say the same about B5, mostly because of people trying to compare B5 to ST or because they didn't really get the message of the show. But specifically on this channel, the B5 community has been amazing, with a few bumps here and there.
