I just watched the History Channels 3 Episode documentary about George Washington & the one they did on Abraham Lincoln also yesterday. The also have on FDR, etc. You should watch them JD, they're well worth the time invested. 2 things you might want to know; Washington's teeth were also made out teeth, not only animal & human cadaver teeth but he also had actually paid his slaves for having them extracted, to be used in his false teeth. The other one they talked about was how he died. Yes, he had an infection in his throat but the modern Dr.'s who did a forensic autopsy of Washington, said that it was more than likely he had died from blood loss due to the blood letting practice. He had repeatedly told them to keep doing the blood letting until the end when he said 'no more'. He had also told Martha to wait 3 days before burying him. He was afraid if being buried alive, as most people were in that era. Out of all of the documentaries I've watched over the year's, these are the best I've ever seen. I promise you won't regret watching them JD. P.S. I also started watching their documentary on FDR & to answer the question regarding his leg braces, FDR wore them under his slacks, so as not to be visible by the public. Just as he hid his braces, he also had his cars created with the steering column leavers which controlled the breaking & gas controls, so he could still drive. He refused to be viewed as a cripple on the public & world's stage. His eldest son was always by his side, to help his father in any way he could. Whether it be helping him dress, pushing his wheelchair or helping him walk on stage for speeches, he was always by his fathers side. That is the true devotion of a son for his father. I think they should do a documentary for Eleanor Roosevelt & his family also. She was a woman of strength, a woman of knowledge & ideas way beyond her times. I would have loved to have met them in person & talked to them on a personal level.
I was at Washington tomb on Veterans day a couple years ago. If you are a veteran they let you on the grounds for free and you can go into the tomb. They give you a flower to lay on the tomb. It was a moment I will never forget. My husband is the veteran but he didn’t wish to go in.

Today I found your channel. I’m so impressed. I hated history in school. Memorizing all the dates and wars wasn’t interesting to me. It wasn’t till I was older that I learned I love history. I remember visiting Mt Vernon with my son back in 2019. I have always revered George Washington and admired his humility. President Washington could have just as easily become a lifelong dictator. Yet he chose to set a positive example for the future. I know he wasn't perfect but the truth is, he gave our country so much. Given these feelings, my visit there was a powerful experience, especially viewing his final resting place, the doors of which were open when I was there. I am so grateful to those who've worked to preserve Mt Vernon for future generations.
Being right there at the tomb of the General. Wow,what a moment,what an experience. Gave me chills. I hope to one day get out there to pay my respects. Good stuff.

I'm not a big fan of the idea of moving the deceased years after they were buried. But as you informed us it was Washington's wishes. I love that they didn't destroy his old tomb, though it didn't look like it gets the care that everything else gets on the property.
Then there are people like me. At risk of sounding morbid, which is not my intent, I'd like to see them open the coffin and determine once and for all the cause of death. Too much speculation. Then, unless the inner lead coffin was airtight, there is probably not much left to work with.
@@justina249 True. What Washington died of, acute epiglottitis which could be easily cured by injections of antibiotics today. Interestingly Washington wasn't the only one in the Mount Vernon area that died of the same disease in December of 1799, other fatal cases were reported.
The old tomb you see today is stabilized and restored. By the 1830's when Washingon's remains were moved to the new tomb the old one was pretty dilapidated. I forget who, but one senator said after seeing the old tomb "I wouldn't bury my dog in there!"

Visited Mount Vernon years ago. I was pretty young then so I don’t remember much. I remember seeing his deathbed, the trees, the garden, and his grave the most. We also took a boat ride on the Potomac. I’m definitely going to go back as I’m older now so I can really experience it.

I've been to the Reagan and Nixon Libraries. Reagan is buried at Simi Valley and Nixon at Yorba Linda. The birthplace of Nixon is on the property. I've been in it. Also, his Presidential limo is there. The Reagan has a piece of the Berlin Wall. An airplane hanger for his Ari Force One and Marine One. Beautiful grounds and views of Simi Valley. You'd enjoy both as I have. Been to the Reagan twice and Nixon once. Never been but Grover Cleveland is buried here in New Jersey at Princeton University. FDR is at Hyde Park, NY. Wilson is in DC at the National Cathedral. Monroe and Tyler are at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. As is Jefferson Davis if you are into that. Safe travels my friend. Love your broadcasts

My grandmother had an old farmers almanac that our ancestor used as a diary. In it, she remarked that Washington had died. I could hardly understand the diary because it was so old, and the handwriting was so flowery, but I do remember the sadness that entry conveyed.
When I was a kid we lived outside of DC and we went to the Capitol and got to see the area in the basement that was intended for Washington. A guard took us down and you could still see the scorch marks from 1812 in the stairway. It was so interesting.
Loved history in school and always enjoyed the field trips to mount Vernon as a child because I didn’t live too far away, so we went almost every year and it was always one of my favorites. Thank you for sharing.

Your videos are always very interesting. I went to Mt. Vernon in 1965. I was fortunate to have parents interested in history. It was the best trip I ever took. Monticello and sites around D.C. included. Thanks for this video. It brought back memories from when I was ten yrs old.
Excellent video! You probably already have this on your travel list J. D., but I highly recommend that you make a video on Thomas Jefferson's home Monticello outside of Charlottesville, Virginia. While it's not quite as cool as Mount Vernon, it's still quite noteworthy of a video. Happy and safe travels!
George Washington had a set of wooden dentures for posing for portraits, he also had dentures made of deer and whale bone. The vault in the Capitol Building is still there, there's also a vault for Judy Garland
There also was an additional tomb site built for George Washington at the Virginia State Capitol incorporated in Washington's Equestrian Statue and Monument that also as surrounded by other statues of Virginia Founding Father Revolutionaries.

So much has changed since I visited Mt. Vernon. I believe it as in 1999/2000. I must go back to see it again. I believe being “older-wiser” I would see it differently. Thank you so much for the video series.
Been there so interesting. Loved the house and surroundings. The crypt that was made in the Capital for Washington will forever stay empty. You can stand on top of where it is in the capital.
He helped design the purple heart not as its awarded today but as a award for valor. Time of the Revolution there was no awards for distinguished valor given by the United States. In essence it was the 1st MOH.
I loved this whole series, I have personally never been there but I passed by it many times in the Navy on board my ship and we used to have to man the rails and salute I think you have actually managed to do the justice the way you presented this well done JD I can't wait to see the next place you go to and I'm still waiting for you to get up to New York to go see sagamore Hill
Thanks for the great video. Was there over 30 years ago while in high school. You can check two presidents off your list at the same time in Quincy Massachusetts. A private church basement is the final resting place of John Adams and John Quincy Adams. Nice folks run a tour of the church and basement.
As usual you delivered a really full experience and sparked a fire for me to continue learning about Mount Vernon. Thanks once more for your time and efforts.
When I visited Mount Vernon there was mentioned that the Apple Trees in the adjacent garden were originally planned by George. I just loved the outhouses that are strategically placed on the perimeter for the benefit to give nutrition to the garden. I wonder if his glasses were designed by Franklin. Not only was farming his passion, but he applied agricultural science techniques that were not well known and/or practiced at the time. No wonder George marched an army to smash the "Whiskey Rebellion" in Western Pennsylvania; he didn't like the competition not paying taxes. PBS did a documentary on the extensive Fish Business of Washington and added an example of the Dining at Mount Vernon in association with his wealth. Notice that he gave Fish as a daily ration to the Slaves; they ate nutritionally well for the times. Wow, I never knew about the canal. Notice many depictions of Washington never smiling and having puffed out cheeks - teeth. I think the reason that Washington, D.C. was chosen was to appease Virginia - the Southern Sphere of Thought and New England in the Northern Area on an acceptable location for the Central Government. Doctor Benjamin Rush - Founder & Signer of the Declaration of Independence - "Bled" George which made him too weak to fight the infection and this practice was common at the time. Surprised they didn't build an enclosure for the second tomb. Great Museum. I always felt that 'Providence' chose the only person capable to lead the military and to become the first Presidential Leader for our Country, the United States of America. @@georgehartle8902 Dr. Rush was obsessed with 'bleeding' patients to cure them. This practice was beginning to lose support in the early 1800s. Many began to realize that leeches placed into wounds, infected or not, was beneficial. George was an old man who probably had the Flue. Fluids - yes. Bleeding - no. Thanks for the reply.
I was in the 5-6th grade when my class went to visit Mt. Vernon..it was life changing. Now at 50 yrs old I still remember parts of the home and definitely the tomb of President & Mrs. Washington's tomb..I distinctily just like the gentlemen show on camera you had to look in to see the sarcophagus of the two..I hope you get a chance to visit Mt. Vernon..it definitely gives you a sense of the way life was back in the 18th century.

If you would like to learn more about Washington and his role in Masonry, I would highly recommend checking out the George Washington Masonic Memorial in Alexandria Virginia. It's only a short walk from King's Street Metro station. One of the best views of Alexandria and the DC area can be found at the top.
I visited there as well. Was told the sarcophagus for George and Martha was a gift by a sculptor and wouldn’t fit through the small door into the family tomb behind them. There are some 18+ family members in the tomb. So they ended up resting there in the open. Seems fitting for all of us to pay our respects.
I got to visit that area back in 1986, when I was a senior in high school. Also visited many war sites, including Gettysburg. Nothing like seeing with your own eyes what you’ve read about in history! Now knowing more, I’d like to return, & see what has changed in almost 40 years!!
Interesting to see some of the changes made since I visited there in the early 70s while serving in the Navy down in that area of the country. Good video!
Even without the legends, myths, and larger than life tales told of him, Washington was an INCREDIBLY interesting person. We’re in Virginia right now and Mt Vernon is on the list of places to visit along with Monticello just down the road from our campground!

I just saw another video about a letter that was written by one of the men in charge of disinterring Washington's body from the old tomb and reinterring it in the new tomb. They opened the casket! It's an interesting letter.
My husband is a vet he shares the same birthday as George Washington. He told me if we get to go into the tomb and place a flower he wants me to place one on Martha's tomb and he is going to do the same on Washingtons tomb.
Excellent tour and historical information. Love the music, too. You have really covered a lot of interesting information. Thank you. The old tomb in its size and simplicity is a far cry from the current tomb. The old one is sort of sad and gloomy. The current tomb is nice and much more becoming for him and his wife.
One of my favorite shows I enjoy watching/reading is Outlander. On season 4 episode 8, the 2 main characters meet George Washington and Martha. The main character can time travel, so she knows about some American history. When she meets George Washington, she mentions the part about chopping down a cherry tree, then says she figures it is something a young boy might do. It was a funny scene 🤣.

There also was an additional tomb site built for George Washington at the Virginia State Capitol incorporated in Washington's Equestrian Statue and Monument that also as surrounded by other statues of Virginia Founding Father Revolutionaries.

When I was at Mt Vernon in 1971, the teeth were on a desk along with his glasses.
Those dentures were creepy. Imagine a scene where they were waiting (hopefully ) for Jim the blacksmith to pass so they could harvest his ideal canines. Anyway! Thank you for another great video.

Been there so interesting. Loved the house and surroundings. The crypt that was made in the Capital for Washington will forever stay empty. You can stand on top of where it is in the capital.

George Washington is on the Purple Heart
Yes he is. I should have mentioned that.
He helped design the purple heart not as its awarded today but as a award for valor. Time of the Revolution there was no awards for distinguished valor given by the United States. In essence it was the 1st MOH.

Thanks for the great video. Was there over 30 years ago while in high school. You can check two presidents off your list at the same time in Quincy Massachusetts. A private church basement is the final resting place of John Adams and John Quincy Adams. Nice folks run a tour of the church and basement.

When I visited Mount Vernon there was mentioned that the Apple Trees in the adjacent garden were originally planned by George. I just loved the outhouses that are strategically placed on the perimeter for the benefit to give nutrition to the garden. I wonder if his glasses were designed by Franklin. Not only was farming his passion, but he applied agricultural science techniques that were not well known and/or practiced at the time. No wonder George marched an army to smash the "Whiskey Rebellion" in Western Pennsylvania; he didn't like the competition not paying taxes. PBS did a documentary on the extensive Fish Business of Washington and added an example of the Dining at Mount Vernon in association with his wealth. Notice that he gave Fish as a daily ration to the Slaves; they ate nutritionally well for the times. Wow, I never knew about the canal. Notice many depictions of Washington never smiling and having puffed out cheeks - teeth. I think the reason that Washington, D.C. was chosen was to appease Virginia - the Southern Sphere of Thought and New England in the Northern Area on an acceptable location for the Central Government. Doctor Benjamin Rush - Founder & Signer of the Declaration of Independence - "Bled" George which made him too weak to fight the infection and this practice was common at the time. Surprised they didn't build an enclosure for the second tomb. Great Museum.
I always felt that 'Providence' chose the only person capable to lead the military and to become the first Presidential Leader for our Country, the United States of America. @@georgehartle8902 Dr. Rush was obsessed with 'bleeding' patients to cure them. This practice was beginning to lose support in the early 1800s. Many began to realize that leeches placed into wounds, infected or not, was beneficial. George was an old man who probably had the Flue. Fluids - yes. Bleeding - no. Thanks for the reply.

I was in the 5-6th grade when my class went to visit Mt. Vernon..it was life changing. Now at 50 yrs old I still remember parts of the home and definitely the tomb of President & Mrs. Washington's tomb..I distinctily just like the gentlemen show on camera you had to look in to see the sarcophagus of the two..I hope you get a chance to visit Mt. Vernon..it definitely gives you a sense of the way life was back in the 18th century.

It's only a short walk from King's Street Metro station. One of the best views of Alexandria and the DC area can be found at the top.

I visited there as well. Was told the sarcophagus for George and Martha was a gift by a sculptor and wouldn’t fit through the small door into the family tomb behind them. There are some 18+ family members in the tomb. So they ended up resting there in the open. Seems fitting for all of us to pay our respects.
I got to visit that area back in 1986, when I was a senior in high school. Also visited many war sites, including Gettysburg.
Nothing like seeing with your own eyes what you’ve read about in history!
Now knowing more, I’d like to return, & see what has changed in almost 40 years!!

Even without the legends, myths, and larger than life tales told of him, Washington was an INCREDIBLY interesting person. We’re in Virginia right now and Mt Vernon is on the list of places to visit along with Monticello just down the road from our campground!

I just saw another video about a letter that was written by one of the men in charge of disinterring Washington's body from the old tomb and reinterring it in the new tomb. They opened the casket! It's an interesting letter.
My husband is a vet he shares the same birthday as George Washington. He told me if we get to go into the tomb and place a flower he wants me to place one on Martha's tomb and he is going to do the same on Washingtons tomb.

The old tomb in its size and simplicity is a far cry from the current tomb. The old one is sort of sad and gloomy. The current tomb is nice and much more becoming for him and his wife.
One of my favorite shows I enjoy watching/reading is Outlander. On season 4 episode 8, the 2 main characters meet George Washington and Martha. The main character can time travel, so she knows about some American history. When she meets George Washington, she mentions the part about chopping down a cherry tree, then says she figures it is something a young boy might do. It was a funny scene 🤣.
I'm only on book 3 (caught up on the show) but I'm so curious to see how much they go into the revolutionary war or if they end up back in Scotland.
I have never put a lot of thought into Washington but thank you for all the information and making it interesting
