  • How Neck Deep Surpassed Pop Punk
    -----------------------------------------------------
Neck Deep is a UK band on the verge of releasing their four LP 'All Distortions Are Intentional' via Hopeless Records (July 24th).
Fronted by Ben Barlow, Neck Deep has been active since 2012.
Neck Deep found major popularity with their pop punk masterpiece "Life's Not Out To Get You". However, following the success of that album, they went for an even bigger sound on their following effort "The Peace and the Panic".
The album did phenomenally well and Neck Deep was blowing up faster than ever. The growth never ceased after that album.
Now we're in 2020 and Neck Deep is the biggest they've ever been before releasing an album.
All Distortions Are Intentional is the furthest they've been removed from their initial sound. And they sound amazing.
I can't wait to see what the world thinks of it.

    Edit: 4:37-4:53
I had to replace the song due to a claim blocking it partially worldwide. When that happens it tends to kill a video forever.
It was a tough decision to make bc it disrupts the overall flow of the video. But it was a compromise to give it the best change to continue circulating through the algorithm.
I’ll never understand stuff like this. Bc, from the very beginning all of the revenue was being funneled to hopeless bc I used Neck Deep songs. Which is more than fair and I expected + am 100% okay with.
It’s not their fault, they’re awesome. But it just makes no sense to partially block a video worldwide when it’s making your own copyrighted material money. Again, it’s just dumb complicated copyright stuff and not Hopeless’s fault.
Thank all, have a safe Sunday. -Nate

Hopeful of growing up, becoming the person I wanted to be, and leaving my hometown in search of a better future. The songs still resonate to me today. I continue to be impressed with their change and progression and ever since LNOTGY came out, Neck Deep as musicians have made a huge impact on my life and even affected my world views. I think this new album is a ton of fun, while also touching on some melancholy feelings, as well as creating a sort of musical experience of lightheartedness and focusing on embracing various parts of life and individual existence. I’ve listened to it everyday since its release and am constantly finding phrases or lyrics that speak to me in some way. A smashing record from a smashing band, as usual.

I feel like the reasons for surpassing pop/punk here can also be said about Waterparks. I can see it with Neckdeep too, but they seem to keep to the conventions of pop/punk more

I think Brand New starting out as Pop-Punk band changed more than Neck Deep more successfully and with a more die hard fanbase. At least until everything that came out about Jesse Lacey.

Love this video! But just wanted to give my perspective. I feel that their newer music is also pop punk, as much as their older stuff. It might not be the fast paced skate punk blast beat style pop punk of their early work, but their new stuff still has a feel of a new take on the 2000s radio pop punk like Blink’s Self Titled album. Pop punk is a super diverse genre and their newer stuff is as pop punk as their old stuff.

Thank you! Interesting take, I agree there are many styles of pop punk. I think people who don’t closely inspect the genre wouldn’t recognize that, but there are so many different types

This album is where the felt they were trying to go. And I think they did it well! I LOVE when bands evolve and can still do it. Example, I love the album last young renegade by ATL. But most of the fandom hated it. I love when bands push their boundaries. And I believe this is my favorite album. And my favorite go in reverse order. You’re right, I feel like you can tell they put their hearts into this album!

lnotgy is god tier, but i loved the feel of peace & the panic too. i also loved lowlife as a single and even she's a god, but for some reason i'm really nervous for the album

I've always felt like their albums had an overall narrative which got more and more mature as they came. Starting with Wishful Thinking, which had a very 17 to 18 year old teen vibe (like you said, generic pop punk for teens). Then came LNOTGY (the best one so far) with themes and aesthetic of a 19 to early 20 year old. And lastly, TPATP (my personal favorite, as weird as that sounds, and the one that introduced me to the band for the first time) which in contrast has the most mature vibe of them all (perhaps mid to later 20s) given the sort of themes they tend to bring up in the songs, like death, the sentiment of ennui, a decieving government, and mental health/anxiety.
That being said... I don't really know where ADAI would sit if this narrative of a progression of maturity were true. The sound is defo a step in the right direction, and I've really liked it so far, but the narrative seems a bit out of place (ie the lyrics of Lowlife or She's a God sound kind of like they were written by Tumblr teens). Nonetheless I've still enjoyed a good bunch of the songs they've released so far, and I can't wait to hear the rest.

Would you every do a video on Neck Deep, The Story So Far, and State Champs talking about how each band has ascended the Pop Punk genre in it's own way since they are all still very relevant in today's terms. Also, considering they were the top tier of the genre in the early 2010's?

They're still pop punk. Tbh their sound is just closer to 90s pop punk than the emo era.

All.distortions is a great album but I'm.totally at a loss as.to what the "concept" behind this concept album is. There are some themes that run along the songs but where does one learn what the concept is. Is there some secret manual or something, any assistance would be appreciated.

I've always preferred TPATP over LNOTGY for some reason. I feel like it has more variety, I know pop punk isn't the best genre when it comes to variety but its definitely nice to have it.
ADAI is also a really good album but it doesn't live up to TPATP or LNOTGY, but that's fine, not every album can out do the previous, especially albums as great as TPATP & LNOTGY.

Seb their bassist/Ben's brother mixes for them and is a genius. They also did work on the latest tracks from Maggie Cassidy in songs like Just to Know & S.A.D which I would highly recommend. Seb is a genius.
