It's John Wetton ... the original bassline wasn't quite like this ... even though great basslines have always been essential to the Roxy Music sound. This is the Musikladen recording.
I never had as much appreciation for the bass composition of this song as I did after I watched this video. This song is incredibly complex. Every instrument is played with almost equal intensity.
Hey man, I've always loved that song "Mother of Pearl" but just really got into Roxy this past week and now I'm hooked on how Amazing Roxy Music is! Their really intense.. Does Roxy music bass player use flat wounds? I never used them and now wanting to get some for a Rickenbacker I'm gonna order for the Roxy sound. Definately one of my fav bands for life now! I love the croony singer, the Awesome bass playing, how they sound very Rocky Horror plus their songs are beautiful as well as they F*cking jam! Yours is the only vid I found of anyone doing an older song by them. Great playing plus great sound man!
Thank you! I'm glad to you say so. This song, I practiced many times.....it was hard work! Mick is my favorite bass player. And I bought my fretless bass because of him.
Great Stuff! for all those commenting regarding the studio version, this is actually based on the great John Wetton, live version. Continue the good work!
Always loved this track. I think John Gustafson played it on the album actually (my favourite version), and John Wetton just did the live shows. Good job - never seen anyone do this before. You inspired me!
J'adore.
Thank you, ikradon. This song is not only one of my favourite Roxy numbers (easy enough to bash out on the piano and originally, as always, because of that killer electric violin solo at the end). I was aware of the bass line predominantly in that solo as well as in the lead-in to the bridge [?] but you showed me how much is involved!
WOW. That's awesome.Great job Roxy music ALWAYS had an outstanding bass presence on their albums. John Porter's bass on "For Your Pleasure" was pretty great too.
Excellent. At first I was confused as I was only familiar with the version on Country Life but having now listened to the Wetton version (trying to ignore everything but the bass) this sounds very accurate.
Awesome job my friend!!!! Brought a tear to my eye! Nice to see an appreciation for the bass line on this song!! You are very talented for sure, and God bless!!! I hope you appreciate Mick Karn's bass talent as well, may he rest in peace!!
You're a crack, man! Love this song and I must have listened to it a thousand times, though I admit I had missed some embellishments... I'm planning to play a cover of this one and be sure the bassist in the band will be taking and keeping quite a few close looks at your video! Cool Vibrant Brilliant Playing, lol! :D
+Alex Balaclava I have listened to it so much I hear it in my dreams. It's been my fave since I was... four? I have the original album (unopened and censored in green shrink wrap) and the slide-in pink cassette I had bought with my allowance. First cassette! :D I play this when I am sad.
To be true I think I musta been like 12 when I heard this first when snooping through my elder brother record collection and I remember the electric violin solo scared the shit out of me, hehe...! I still don't know if this song is entirely ironic or if it's about true feelings as the words in the lyrics are quite heartfelt but the song is utterly disturbing. I love it now btw
...and I can't even find a bass player to jam with who can groove to the simplest songs. You nailed this song from start to finish, kid. Very, very impressive! Perhaps you'd be so kind as to tell me the chords. The intro chords are slightly different than the verse chords. I'm a guitar player. Just give me the roots. I'll flesh out the 3rds, and extensions.
All well and good except for the fact that he isnt playing some parts even close to correctly, and most of the rest has so much added that it detracts from the original bassline.
Just watching the bass tells you just how complex Roxy were. Under appreciated these days.

Bass on studio version is NOT like that.
It has the same idea, but it doesn't take it as far.
I figured out the bassline by ear from the video "ROXY MUSIC - OUT OF THE BLUE - JOHN WETTON"on RUclips.
So I didn't use a tab,sorry.

RIP John Wetton
Roxy always had great bass, even if they had like a dozen bass players over the years. Such a critical part of their sound. Nice job on this one!
John Wetton is the GOAT
Great Stuff! for all those commenting regarding the studio version, this is actually based on the great John Wetton, live version. Continue the good work!
Musikladen have uploaded most of the set they did there, but not this track.

Tough to play. Well done.
You should contact Roxy Musique
Where are you based?
give me the band i play the part
All well and good except for the fact that he isnt playing some parts even close to correctly, and most of the rest has so much added that it detracts from the original bassline.
This is literally the Musikladen take (which Musikladen keeps taking down).
It's distorted.
Boy.......you can play!!! Ready for in a real band!
It's Really Good .... but you put in a few more of your own ad-libs than Wetton used but that's Ok, Make it your own !! 👍🎶
This is literally the Musikladen take (which Musikladen keeps taking down).
@@reinpost That's to bad.
Busy fingers :)
Con la mano sinistra ti muovi in modo tarantolato, pazzesco..FAI PAURA, COME CAZZO FAI?
たまたまヒットした映像で拝見しましたが、もっとゴリゴリ感ありますよ。
指は本当によく動いてるけど、タイム感があっていない演奏というのは評価に困る・・・。
Well done.
