This song was written in 79..no one knew about Aids..and in 81 just medical were starting to wonder, but didn't know what it was or how it was contracted
Yes and I really think that someone that has listened to Queen enough can recognize that this song is definately a Brian song. All 4 of them have very unique styles in melody and lyrics...
Save Me is such a good song, Brian said he wrote it about a friend of his who was going through a particularly difficult divorce. I love Play The Game, so pretty and such a powerful message.
@@delphineboucher1908 ..sorry it’s not about Freddie...this is from 1981....way before he was diagnosed with HIV...get your facts checked...show respect.
So I’ve seen an interview with Brian where he explained that he wrote this song about another love affair of Freddie’s that went wrong. Further he said they never discussed it as they never discussed meanings of songs. So when Freddie says it’s a special song I think that meant it was relatable for him - and maybe he know it was from Bryan for him? What a tribute to their friendship. ❤
The way Brain walks to the front of the stage on his solo during play the game, you know he knows he’s the coolest cat in the building. What showmanship!
Thank you for commenting on all four members. They are all exceptional in their field . It is obvious to mention Freddie who is in front but John has some extraordinaire basslines, Rogers drumming always serves the melody - he doesn’t show off - and Brian is extraordinaire as guitarist and songwriter an composer/ arranger.
Great reaction, thank you. Save Me was written by Brian. One of my most favorite things to watch when Queen performs live, is how they watch each other. They don't make a move without eyes on each other. It was so necessary back before there were technical aids. A once in a lifetime band!
I read somewhere that in a previous concert with Save Me, Brian started on the piano before Freddie started singing (to be fair he does have his back to him and no earpieces). Freddie joked "Well, it didn't start out so fucking well that time!" But that's why they check with one another to make sure they start together.😂😂😂
So you do know there’s more to Queen than Freddie’s diagnosis? The whole band wrote songs about a whole range of different topics, but Freddie sang them as if he wrote them. I don’t know how you thought Save Me was about AIDS! Did you know Freddie was a natural baritone but jumped out of his normal range to tenor for most of his career? Effortless for him. Check out Freddie and Montserrat Cabale, you’ll see for yourself. But it’s Freddie’s vibrato during Play the Game that is truly incredible. I could listen to it on repeat all day. A study was done on Freddie’s voice. Apparently, and you probably know anyway, that a normal singer’s vibrato is between 5.4Hz-6.9Hz but Freddie’s was 7.04, even higher than Pavarotti! So yes, there is so much more to Queen and Freddie than his AIDS Diagnosis. Don’t assume anything about it, he wasn’t even diagnosed until 1987, this concert was in 1981. Other than that, I enjoyed your reaction as always. Please check out Too Much Love Will Kill You, and don’t draw any conclusions from the title. It’s not about AIDS either
These Are The Days Of Our Lives isn't about Freddie and his diagnosis, it's about Roger Taylor analyzing how he lived his life, but everyone including the fans got more carried away with nostalgia and assumed the song is about Freddie.
The Beatles struggled to play live, that`s why they stopped. These guys established new levels of excellence in studio production and got even better playing live. They have no peer.
Oh Jeffrey! What did you do?! I started the comments before the video, and uh-o, there it is! They all wrote songs for the band. Freddie just knew how to perform each one perfectly. He liked everyone to interpret them for themselves, but he and we were all in the dark about his illness till much later/too late. Even the one where he says goodbye to fans was written by Roger. Still a great reaction to the music though!
Don’t know how you don’t hear Roger’s vocal harmonies, too. 🤔 As others have said, this was way before anyone knew about AIDS, much less Freddie. Please do the studio version of “39” to hear Brian on lead and Freddie’s & Roger’s amazing harmonies on that song!

Freddie learned how to play piano at boarding school were he went at 6 years old until his teens in India and formed a band with some of the other bays there.
As an avid Queen fan of over 35 years, a great reaction. However, a few simple facts, Freddie didn't write this song Brian did, he wrote it about a "break-up" of a relationship/marriage, which I suppose you could read into it in many ways, he could have wrote it about his own marriage break-up, or (which I think) about Freddie's break-up with Mary whom he loved dearly, the words are more befitting (I think) to Freddie and Mary's break-up, I guess we'll never really know, which is another appealing aspect about Queen. Also, Save Me had nothing whatsoever to do with Freddie's AIDS illness/diagnosis., and I was (especially in this day and age) quite shocked and taken back when you state "Freddie .......AIDS his STD which he was dying from" is arrogant and comes across as such. AIDS is not purely an STD disease and can be contracted in MANY MANY MANY ways, . Save Me was released in 1980, 7 years before Freddie even started to "suspect" that something may be wrong with him. RIP my hero Freddie Mercury xxxxxx

It is really a joyce to listen to these four perfect musicians , try sometime It ´s A Hard Life live from Rio, beautiful Freddie ´s song singing with passion💖
I love everything about this performance of Save Me. One thing I will mention is Rogers wonderful drumming in this. So soft and subtle at the start and building up towards the middle and end. Masterful in my opinion. Not to mention his backing vocals. The man can sing .
The comments remind me of an interview Brian recently did w/Sammy Hagar. He brought up “writing for singers” and said (roughly) that writing for someone to sing your songs is what it’s all about. They convey your message & when you gave your songs to Freddie to sing, you were pretty damn lucky. They all were fantastic song writers. Play the game here is wonderful too. 👍
Written by Brian May way before the AIDs thing. Also, so much to talk about even in their non-live music! Sometime you should check out March of the Black Queen, It’s Late, Cool Cat, and Innuendo none of which were performed live as far as I know.
Great choices. Songs referencing FM’s declining health are found somewhat on the Miracle 1989, Innuendo album1991 and Made in Heaven alblum 1995 - Band put this album together after writing music around lyrics he recorded the year he died as well as some remixes. Some may say there was a bit on the Barcelona album 1988 as well. The last two albums were not foreseen due to the state of his illness, so the last two are gifts, and great gifts they turned out to be. Prefer to just focus on the music, but just thought I would clarify👍
Oh, yeah - on Save Me - Brian start on piano (with his guitar in his LAP) - and the smoothest transition ever when Brian just "pops up" and Fred goes to keys... BTW, this is a Brian song (supposed to be about a friend going through a bad break-up - I know, everyone wants to figure out how every song is about Freddie and his "gayness" -- but just not true - lol)... I love their live interaction... and not to forget Roger and John -- this band was amazing... and every single member was an integral contributor! Thanks!
This concert was actually about 6 years before Freddie was diagnosed with AIDS - that wasn’t until 1987, after Live Aid and the subsequent 1986 Magic Tour that gave us so many iconic performances - no one knew they’d be among Freddie’s last. This is still 1981, before anyone had much of an idea about AIDS, let alone Freddie, though it’s likely he’d unknowingly contracted HIV by this time. “Save Me” is about a relationship falling apart, inspired by Brian’s friend (though Brian would later go through his own heartache and divorce, bringing us the song “Too Much Love Will Kill You”... though Brian wrote and sang it, there’s also a version where Freddie sings. Both are beautiful!) You can start extrapolating song meaning possibly being related to Freddie’s health by the “Miracle” album, and certainly more explicitly in the “Innuendo” album (“The Show Must Go On” and “I’m Going Slightly Mad”), as well as the posthumous album “Made in Heaven”, which the band put together after Freddie’s death using recordings that had previously been unfinished or unreleased, including the last song he ever recorded and never got a chance to finish (“‘Mother Love”), which includes the line “I long for peace before I die.” It’s haunting and beautiful. Brian sang the last verse, as Freddie had said he was tired and would come back another day; he was never able to. Remember that nothing was ever directly stated, just allusions and literal innuendos to protect Freddie. The band all lied about his health and directly denied rumors, as he was already being swarmed by paparazzi wanting to snap photos of him looking ill. Freddie didn’t announce his diagnosis until a press release the day before he died.
"Save Me" is my favorite song off of the Game album. It was great hearing it live back in 1980 at Madison Square Garden. As others have commented this song has nothing to do with aids or Freddie. Brian wrote this song back in 1979 and the Game album came out then. If you did a bit of research every member of the band has written songs for every album and each one has at least one #1 hit to thier credit. In fact on this album at least 3 have songs that did well. Brian with Save Me, Freddie with Crazy Little Thing Called Love and John Deacon with Another One Bites the Dust.
As others have said Save Me was written by Brian May; nothing to do w/Freddie. I love Save Me but my favorite live performance is 1982 Milton Keynes - I LOVE FREDDIE!!!!
Sorry mate gonna have to correct you on that one " the song save me was written by Brian may and it's written around a friend of his going through a tough divorce but Great choice absolutely love this love Performance for me this is Queens best live gig ever forget live Aid it doesn't come close to Montreal
I enjoyed this. These are two really beautiful songs. Fredddie didn't know he had Aids for another 6-7 years. Play the Game was written after one of Freddie's lovers cheated on him.
Great reaction but Save Me was written by Brian May probably in 1980 about s friends whose marriage was ending. the concert was in 1981 way before Freddie was diagnosed. I do enjoy your reactions so please keep them coming.
I appreciate it. I clarified my mistake on the matter as I writing the video description, but I don't know how many viewers take the time to read it. I appreciate your input!
Oooooooh!! Two songs!! And two very good songs! SAVE ME was written by Brian about a friend’s divorce/breakup!! It’s a beautiful song! Brian starts on the piano then transitions to the guitar.🔥 You gotta remember that no matter who wrote the song Freddie ALWAYS sings it like it’s his own! Btw, Freddie officially wasn’t diagnosed with AIDS until 1987. PLAY THE GAME - In the intro with Freddie on the piano it reminds me of a shirt I have with the Peanuts character (Schroeder) Freddie sitting at the piano with the famous yellow jacket! 😂😂 Hahaha!!! Actually, I like the Milton Keynes version better of PLAY THE GAME ..there’s a lot more piano from Freddie (he uses his elbow) and the vocals are Wowzers!!
This performance was from Montreal '81 so certainly nothing to do with aids. 'Save Me' was written by Brian and centered around a friend's imploding marriage.
Save me has nothing to do with his diagnosis for God's sake. This song is from 1979, this concert is from 1981 and it was the year the first cases of Aids appeared in The US and still nobody knew what the disease was. Freddie Mercury was diagnosed in 1987, so in 1981 Freddie had no idea he was going to die because nobody even knew that Aids existed.
Save me one of Brian 1980 lovely song Freddie manages to make it sound like its his somehow It was the end of 81 when the medical profession realised something was wrong because a lot of young men had kaposi sarcoma skin cancer which is usually only seen in older men with low immune system Edit older people.. sarcoma skin cancer but theres 3 slightly different types?
I remember listening to the car radio as I was driving in the very early 1980s. There was an item on the news break about doctors trying to figure out what was causing mostly young men to have severe immune problems. It wasn't until later that they figured it out, and put the name AIDS to it. I think that the higher harmony on the chorus of Play the Game is Roger Taylor. Also, they were super attuned and aware of each other all the time on stage. You can especially see it near the end of songs when they all look at each other.
@@mariabryant6582 Fair enough,i hadnt seen any refering to 1980,all the ones ive seen claim the concerns started mid/late 81when there were significant amount of cases
White Queen 1975 Hammersmith Odeon and 1976 You Take My Breath Away at Hyde Park. ❤❤❤Queen. Check out their versatility in Seaside Rendezvous, My Melancholy Blues, In The Lap of The Gods, Stone Cold Crazy, Lily Of The Valley, Spread Your Wings, Death On Two Legs.
Wrong, all the harmonies where done by Freddie, Roger and occasionally Brian. Otherwise it was Roger and Freddie. There's actually a few songs where the harmonies where only Freddie, for example "You take my breath away".
@@Nm-oj6fkmy comment was because Jeffrey was talking about harmonies of Freddie and Brian, which never happened without Roger, at least in Live performances
Don’t give much thought to comments which criticize your assumption that songs which Freddie sings have something to do with AIDS. Clearly you are not alone in that, even when it may be wrong. Those of us who heard those songs back when they were first released, naturally, did not relate them to a medical condition cuz we had no idea. But who knows what we would have thought with the benefit of hindsight and more info. I saw Queen in concert I the late ‘70’s, but never met any of the band members, so maybe I am being presumptuous, but I don’t think they care whether the fans/listeners understand the true meaning of each song. They just want us to be entertained, and I am forever grateful to them for that. Thanks for doing Queen reactions!! Love them!!
Play the game is Freddies Both songs are from the 80 The game album Only us no 1 album From the album their only us no 1 Freddie crazy little thing and john another one bites the dust
For a great Bryan May solo, react to Brighton Rock, best version in my opinion is the Live Killer Album version (it changed on every tour), around 12 minutes guitar and drum solo, at the begin and end a little singing from Freddie. Bryan plays a "duet" with its own echo.
You have too forget about the HIV Freddie wasn't even officially diagnosed until 1987,and as I said they all wrote songs, and Freddie as the lead singer sang them, don't read too much into things,I don't remember anything about his illness being included at all, that's not how Freddie was,the only one where the group had a go at a former manager was Death On Two Legs, and by the way they all play more than one instrument
Please react to Now I’m Here live at Wembley 1986 And Tie Your Mother Down live at Wembley 1986 (Saturday 7/12 show). They did 2 nights at Wembley in ‘86 because tickets sold out so fast. One more - you should hear the live of Bohemian Rhapsody live at Montreal 1981
The message of the song is not really about him being hiv-positive. He got diagnosed with AIDS in 1987 and the song was recorded in the year 1979 so the song would not technically be about his AIDS diagnosis. But you can interpret it any way you want.
I love listening to reactions on Freddie and Queen. But I really get annoyed that most automatically presume Freddie wrote the song he is singing and it's about him possibly!.. I just advise that their songs be looked up first to see who wrote the song. My opinion. But I do like your reactions.
I totally understand your perspective.
The man can sing .
two of their, hands down, BEST songs ever.
🤟😊
Awesome
A masterclass for any/all musicians
Queen just a hard working bunch of synergy, magic, talent, team, individuals, etc...🔥🔥🔥
The best in the world!!!!
Right? What's your favorite song by Queen?
@@JeffreyHackReacts difficult to choose one,I love them!!👋
Written by Brian May way before the AIDs thing.
Both are beautiful!)
You can start extrapolating song meaning possibly being related to Freddie’s health by the “Miracle” album, and certainly more explicitly in the “Innuendo” album (“The Show Must Go On” and “I’m Going Slightly Mad”), as well as the posthumous album “Made in Heaven”, which the band put together after Freddie’s death using recordings that had previously been unfinished or unreleased, including the last song he ever recorded and never got a chance to finish (“‘Mother Love”), which includes the line “I long for peace before I die.” It’s haunting and beautiful.
That was a beautiful comment hitting the nail right on the head!
Missed the boat. Brian's song. This is 81. Not diagnosed till 87. They all wrote songs. Sang songs, & played multiple instruments.
Sometimes it’s worth watching the official video (Save Me) to put the song in the right context.
Sorry mate gonna have to correct you on that one " the song save me was written by Brian may and it's written around a friend of his going through a tough divorce but Great choice absolutely love this love Performance for me this is Queens best live gig ever forget live Aid it doesn't come close to Montreal
Gotcha! Thanks for clarifying. I later learned about that after looking at the song's Wikipedia page. Yes, this performance is truly remarkable!
I enjoyed this. These are two really beautiful songs. Fredddie didn't know he had Aids for another 6-7 years. Play the Game was written after one of Freddie's lovers cheated on him.
This was rec early 80
When was he dating Tony? I thought it was later in the year
Did he and joe split early 79 then?
Yay!!
I have no heart I'm cold inside, I have no real intent 🎼🎵🎶
Great reaction but Save Me was written by Brian May probably in 1980 about s friends whose marriage was ending. the concert was in 1981 way before Freddie was diagnosed. I do enjoy your reactions so please keep them coming.
I appreciate it. I clarified my mistake on the matter as I writing the video description, but I don't know how many viewers take the time to read it. I appreciate your input!
Listen to Somebody To Love ❤️ Me 1981 in MONTREAL u feel the PASSION 🥰
Oooooooh!!
Haha I knew you would mention the MK version...love it too!! 😁
@@melissalee5622 😂😂 I know I know ... Queen was on fire! 🔥🔥
I totally agree, Quenn in Milton Keynes, and Freddie in Milton Keynes blows our mind...
This performance was from Montreal '81 so certainly nothing to do with aids. 'Save Me' was written by Brian and centered around a friend's imploding marriage.
100%
Save me has nothing to do with his diagnosis for God's sake. This song is from 1979, this concert is from 1981 and it was the year the first cases of Aids appeared in The US and still nobody knew what the disease was. Freddie Mercury was diagnosed in 1987, so in 1981 Freddie had no idea he was going to die because nobody even knew that Aids existed.
Save me one of Brian 1980 lovely song
Freddie manages to make it sound like its his somehow
It was the end of 81 when the medical profession realised something was wrong because a lot of young men had kaposi sarcoma skin cancer which is usually only seen in older men with low immune system
Edit
older people.. sarcoma skin cancer but theres 3 slightly different types?
I remember listening to the car radio as I was driving in the very early 1980s. There was an item on the news break about doctors trying to figure out what was causing mostly young men to have severe immune problems. It wasn't until later that they figured it out, and put the name AIDS to it. I think that the higher harmony on the chorus of Play the Game is Roger Taylor. Also, they were super attuned and aware of each other all the time on stage. You can especially see it near the end of songs when they all look at each other.
@@mariabryant6582
Fair enough,i hadnt seen any refering to 1980,all the ones ive seen claim the concerns started mid/late 81when there were significant amount of cases
@@bluebell3720 Not disagreeing with you, you are probably right. I just remember that it was 1980 or 1981.
NANI???? Freddie got his diagnosis in 1987 and died on 1991.
And this was written in 1979 and this performance was exactly ten yrs before his death.
95% of harmonies were Roger and Brian, backing vocals, Roger. Not only this one, but all songs.
My favourite song play the game not the most popular song but still my favourite
Love them!!
Thank you so much for your input on the matter! It means a lot and I'm glad you enjoyed the video reaction! 😊
Play the game is Freddies
Both songs are from the 80 The game album
Only us no 1 album
From the album their only us no 1 Freddie crazy little thing and john another one bites the dust
Is it possible to miss and love someone who you didn't even meet in your life? I wish i met Freddie
For a great Bryan May solo, react to Brighton Rock, best version in my opinion is the Live Killer Album version (it changed on every tour), around 12 minutes guitar and drum solo, at the begin and end a little singing from Freddie. Bryan plays a "duet" with its own echo.
Please play Somebody To Love in MONTREAL. ❤❤
Oh you should react to Killer Queen/ I’m in love with my Car , from this concert you really see Roger lights up those drums lol
Great idea!
Please react to Queen - Get Down Make love, from the same concert
I was actually thinking about reacting to that song!
Please react to Now I’m Here live at Wembley 1986
And Tie Your Mother Down live at Wembley 1986 (Saturday 7/12 show). They did 2 nights at Wembley in ‘86 because tickets sold out so fast.
One more - you should hear the live of Bohemian Rhapsody live at Montreal 1981
The original (jz audio) of Play the Game to my vibe is more soothing (of course) 🤗👍✌
The message of the song is not really about him being hiv-positive. He got diagnosed with AIDS in 1987 and the song was recorded in the year 1979 so the song would not technically be about his AIDS diagnosis. But you can interpret it any way you want.
Killer Queen and I'm in love my car live Montreal 81' please
Freddie: *works almost until the very end so people remember him for his art and not for how he died*
People 30 years later: this song is about aids
No it is not!
I am not a die hard fan like most queen viewers of this channel, but enjoy reacting to live queen performances because each performance has something special give. I appreciate everyone's input on the matter, even if they get slightly offended by something I say in my video. I'm not perfect, and I'm learning more about Queen as I make these video reactions! Thank you for watching and I'm glad you enjoy the content!
@@JeffreyHackReacts it's ok. No worries. I enjoy your reactions regardless. In Freddie's words "carry on, carry on, as if nothing really matters"..lol.
Watch GREEN DAY the crowd sang the whole BOHEMIAN song no band 2017 on stage
Holy crap, Save Me had nothing to do with Freddie! It was written by Brian about a friend of his who was going through a painful divorce. Don't assume every some Freddie sings is about him or written by him.
Hi Marvin, please read my video description. Thanks for watching the video.
Freddie did not know anything about having aids at this time
React to: IT'S A HARD LIFE, life in Rio and SHEER HEART ATTACK...good comments
This should be concentrating on the music,. Please don't assume that any of their music is autobiographical, and at this time, composed in 1979, Aides was not a defined ailment.
You couldn’t be more wrong
Right
He was diagnosed with HIV in 87 and it only became a full blown aids later.he was not dying at this time!
Brian May wrote this song. I don’t think it had anything to do with Freddie’s HIV/aids. Killer tune as is the game.
I suggest you to watch Marc martel queen covers
The Official music videos for both are better not "live". If you get a chance.....
Freddie didn’t write this.
The song was written long before Freddie knew he had AIDS. It's about love lost.
Have you never been to hockey or basketball games? They are 1 step lower than National anthem. Maybe first😎🤔
Guess you haven't really seen Freddie work his audience. Better than Hitler but for good. I'm sure you' seen live aid. Oh and speaking of the slower, touching songs you must play I'll always love you. Song with only Brian and Freddie.
