Facial nerve & facial expression (anatomy)

- The facial nerve is a bit of a beast, so let's just look at the part of this cranial nerve that innervates the muscles of facial expression. How can you use this anatomy to diagnose upper motor neurone (e.g. stroke) vs lower motor neurone (e.g. Bell's palsy) problems?

The parotid gland is innervated by the glossopharyngeal nerve (CN 9) not the facial nerve (CN 7)
Facial nerve pierces the parotid gland
Very true. The facial nerve passes through the parotid gland without innervating it.
In 9:42 he said that
There is sensory and autonomic ...
Sensory is by auriculotemporal nerve and greater auricular
Parasympathetic is by c9 (from c9 to preganglionic to otic ganglion to post ganglion then to auricutemporal) means auricutemporal and c9
Sympathetic is from superior cervical ganglion
That's what he said ,it just passes through it doesn't innervate it . Watch the video again
The Zebra Bit My Carrot. That is what i use to remember the branches of the facial nerve
THANK YOU, Dr. Sam Webster. The students at SWANSEA University Medical School is lucky to have you.
Thanks a lot for enhancing our knowledge on cranial nerve and their root origin representation in the brain, medulla oblongata, pons and other similar nerve travelling systems.Once again thanks to Dr Sam sir.
Best anatomy channel on RUclips and I've seen so many. Keep up the awesome work. Really helping with my understanding. You have a gift for teaching :)
Thank you so much sir I am a medical student from India . Your videos are really very helpful ,the models you use and the way you explain is really amazing 😊
You have the coolest anatomy lab I’ve ever seen 😍👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Sam you are amazing! Best teacher ever!!! I'm learning so much, thank youu! :)
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR VIDEOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So much appreciation for you and your work from CA, USA!
As always, an excellent job. My limbic system is engaged at some point in every one of your videos. 😉
You are literally the best anatomy teacher
Thank you sir , you made me love the anatomy for the first time !
I wish you a happy new year ❤️
Very helpful, thank you
Glossopharngeal
Great...never seen such an educational video. all are so boring but this is awesome. Loved it and subscribed it. hope you will keep uploading these kinda videos.
Thank you so much! Ukrainian students from Lviv medical university are delighted with your videos.
just another amazing video, thank you !!!
بجد انت عظيم❤️❤️❤️❤️💙💙💙 Thank you 🧡🥼
love it, love you for making my anatomy absolutely sweet.
Excellent knowledge :) Much appreciated.
0:20 I'm so proud of you Dr.Webster!!
Great job
anither excellent video, thanks, mate!
Perfect job bro>> love your videos
Thank you for the great video! ❤️
Amazing video !! 😍. Thank u so much !😊
Thank you Dr. Webster, i love your videos, it helps me a lot
This is awesome
Best channel, love it so much
You are so amazing.”Following you from Iraq
Thank you great video
thank you
Thank you for shering
Parotid Gland:
1- Sensory through the CN V2 (trigeminal - Mandibular). The nerve is Auriculotemporal nerve.
2- Secretomotor (Salivation) is through the postganglionic parasympathetic fibers of CN IX (glossopharyngeal - lesser petrosal nerve from tympanic nerve), which leaves the ganglion in accompany of (same together) as the CN V2 auriculotemporal nerve mentioned above. Is that in simple way terms correct? reminds us of Lacrimal gland - (CN V1 & CN VII)!!
People like you in class are awsome
Correction! Sensory CN V2 is Maxillary branch of Trigeminal Nerve
Thank you so much teacher !!!!!
superdooperfantasic!!
You are my star! Thanks!
What are the muscles and nerves that innervate the whole face department whether it is glandular part in face region
you're amazing
Thanks very much.... I want to ask that do you taught everything which you taught to your students in class if yes its very nice of you and if no please start doing so we can get full knowledge
Awesome amazing 👏
Impressive
Auriculotemporal nerve with the Lesser Petrosal nerve innervate the parotid gland.
thank you so much. This video is helpful. ^_^
I realize this is an old video by now but if anyone knows, can these nerves be damaged by pressure from a nearby artery or by stimulants of the central nervous system? I've been having cramps followed by pain in several of these nerves following a treatment with a stimulant drug. The first six months I had lots of tension in the face and a loss of sense of "my brain" and impaired cognitive and emotional as well as sexual functioning.
What would happen if someone was born without the main facial nerve branch on one side of their brain? Would there be any function at all on the appropriate side? Will there be minimal movement around the mouth for example the buckle branch?
awesome
Best Anatomy channel. Keep it up :)

Our demonstrator gave us a good rhyme for the different branches of CNVII

Exactly....same here RW campus
Everyone went home, really quiet 🤫 you know what happened in horror movies with such settings? Then he said: really nice 🤣👍
Thanks for all the great work dude
Besides anatomy facial nerve is. Components of autonomic nerve systems. And in sanatan philosophy by om chanting and fish mouth practice are for stimulation of automatic system by orbicularis ori facial nerves stimulation.
decent, thank you
Post ganglionic fibers of Otic ganglion via auriculo-temporal nerve!!
I want to make this model could uu please help me and share information
then how/where does hemifacial spasm affect the nerve ?
Brilliant and very British
Sam u are magnificent ❤️
Sir, the pre ganglionic fibers are from glossopharyngeal nerve and postganglionic fibers run with auriculo temporal nerve to innervate the parotid gland. Am I right sir?
Correct.
@@SamWebster Thank you sir
At 23.20 don't you mean "they DO crossover"?
Is that a restoration on your right central incisor? although it could be only some sort of fluorosis. Thanks for the video by the way!!
sir I suppose it is auriculo temporal nerve... The nerve supplying parotid gland
it's CN 9 ;)
There is sensory and autonomic ...
Sensory is by auriculotemporal nerve and greater auricular
Parasympathetic is by c9 (from c9 to preganglionic to otic ganglion to post ganglion then to auricutemporal) means auricutemporal and c9
Sympathetic is from superior cervical ganglion
Hello Prof Sam you look and act very similar to Lindybeige from the youtube channel just something i observed :)
N.auirculotemporal from the N.mandibular
glossopharyngeal nerve
Reminds me of "House" without the attitude.
2021 🥺
can nerve face hiling ? please answer me 😭😭😭
I couldn’t help but notice your skinless buddy has the same ears and nose as you.
Also, I’m curious if the facial muscles can be influenced by forward head posture, causing pressure to be placed on the nerves around the ear.
❤️🥰
loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Standing up helps my tooth ach..lol. when I lay down my blood pressure masses with it..ugggghhh
Just stop for a minute and think about how important the facial nerve is.... Without the facial nerve we would have no emojis, emoticons, smileys... The Internet would be so dry, emotionless, maybe even motionless...
17:30 Lol
I live with cranial pain daily 😮l
I have undergone surgery of every sinus. Seven
Bells palSey I
know
Your lectures are so good. But this one is all over the place. Kindly focus on the branches and their individual functions and damage to
each branch and this will be excellent.
Look at that hair,, the nerve innervating some of your hair follicles is definitely cut
