An anecdotal story about diabetes and my 88-yr old mother in failing health and in hospice for almost one year. My mother is diabetic, had to prick her finger many times a day, had insulin shots, etc. When we thought she was passing, she was put on hospice care, the Docs STOPPED all her insulin, testing, and watching her glucose numbers, etc., because we figured she wasn't long for this world. She's still kicking, has dementia but otherwise, in pretty decent shape, all things considered. She only weighs 80 lbs or so but after one year we recently checked her numbers and they were NORMAL. Go figure. The only thing that changed significantly is her DIET.

Didn't know that about the recommended maintenance schedule for the P226. However unless you shoot a decent amount you probably won't hit that limit for perhaps the life of the gun or as long as you have it. You could shoot a box of 50 a month through it and go 33 years before you might replace the rails or frame.
Another note on the P226 is they are fairly large pistols. I think they're really great and I didn't really notice the relatively higher bore axis compared to the Springfield XD (like a Glock) I used to have, but I got rid of mine partially because it was just too big for my manlet hands (got a P229 instead which I really love). If you're interested in the P226 and don't have big hands I'd try to try one out first and get your hands on it before I bought one.

About the prepper with type 1 diabetes. Type 1 is genetically influenced and where the body does not produce insulin so they have to get it from an outside the body source. This is genetic and doesn’t have anything to do with weight. Type 2 is from lifestyle choices: overweight, poor diet, etc.
All I can say is stock on insulin as much as possible. I don’t know of another way.

Money was limited for me when I bought my first firearm. I could only get one, & chose a 9mm Smith & Wesson. It is not the ideal home defense firearm, but I chose it for three reasons. One, the availability of the ammo, two, a pistol can be concealed & fired both in the home & in public, so it wasn’t just restricted to a “home” gun, & three, I was fortunate enough at the time to live in a home with brick behind the drywall throughout the entire home, which allowed me to worry a bit less about hitting unintended targets. I now own multiple pistols and rifles, & am looking to purchase a couple of 590s or maybe 870s next. If you can only get one firearm to start, I’d personally say go pistol too. Violence doesn’t just pop up at home.

.357 Magnum revolver and lever action rifle.
Can shoot .38 special as well, increasing versatility.
Still both are commonly used calibers.
Wheel guns are SIMPLE, and in this caliber goes up to 8 rounds with tremendous stopping power.
Out of a rifle, you can hunt medium size game out to 150 yards and can hold up to 14 rounds.
Finally - it's one caliber and relatively small, so you can carry a lot and it simplifies your inventory.
    Alternatives:
.308 rifle. Tremendous power, great range, can also shoot 7.61x51, can shoot surprisingly large game, extremely common rifle caliber(s.)
9x19 - not as powerful as .357 Magnum, but not bad. Not really impressive out of a rifle/carbine, so less versatile. But very common.
12 gauge - can't shoot out of a pistol, but it's incredibly versatile. Range is a bit of a problem, even with slugs. Still though - that's not a bad choice at all.
    Just IMHO.

I am convinced that any version of the Ruger 10/22 would be the best all-around emergency rifle.
It's not a battle rifle that you use for waging war. A battle rifle, a Real Battle Rifle chambered in a full powered rifle cartridge is necessary for fighting a war.
If you're in need of protecting yourself and your family from humans who are not wearing military style body armor, then I would think a Ruger 10/22 would be acceptable in an emergency situation.
You can carry a Ruger 10/22, and 2,000/3,000 rounds of ammunition vs a Battle Rifle, and 400 rounds of ammunition.
You would be lighter, you could move much better, you wouldn't fatigue as quickly. You wouldn't blow out your fine tuned hearing. You wouldn't hurt your families hearing.
22LR would be more difficult to locate within a forested location or in a city location with the echo.

Least popular pistol caliber that’s available could be the .38 Super if you live in the desert SW and like the 1911 platform. It’s popular in Mexico because military calibers (9mm) are illegal. Used to be used a lot in the US for competition because it hits major power factor but holds more in magazine. I remember it being around in the 2011 ammo crisis. I’ve never owned one so do your own research.

A 10/22 or a S&W AR15-22 w/ 30 round magazines could be used against a group of marauders. A .22 lever action is very handy as well.
The .22lr is incredibly underrated. The ammo is so easily carried and the cost is low.
With accuracy, you could take most North American game. Including a white tail deer easily with in a 100 yards. A head shot with a .22lr drops them dead immediately.

    Here's my take:
    1. Handgun: Definitely an FN Five seveN, 5,7mm, 20+1 shots. Much lighter than a Glock 19 full, easier to shoot, much lower recoil, highly effective (even with anti-septic civilian ammo), and dependable. Buy this first and save up for the next choice. [Never mind all the gizmos, and paraphernalia people weigh down the gun with. As is is good enough, just train better!] { Inter-compatible magazines - irrelevant if you have ONE handgun! Also, it's now 2022 and an ammo shortage - 9mm was one of the first on the scarce list, after .22LR! }
    2. Long gun/rifle: Simple choice here - FN SCAR17, in 7,62mm. This is the SOCOM choice for Spec Ops options. Versatile for many applications, and highly reliable and deadly out to 800+m. There is very little one could require more from this rifle that it does not have. I would ensure a good optics installation. [ 24:50 During the 2022 ammo shortage the 7,62 x 39 very quickly became unobtainable! ]
    3. 27:58 Shotgun: I would only consider a military shotgun, because it can be used to hunt as well, just as effectively, especially for birds/poultry. It's a no-brainer.
The choice here is: FN SLP (Mk1, 8 shot).
    4. The remaining gap is still between the Five seveN and the SCAR. To fill this perfectly the P90 is the answer. Same round as the Five seveN, it complement it perfectly out to ranges where the SCAR takes over! Massive 50 round magazine, light and compact, very ergonomic and easy to shoot (even for small people), and insanely reliable! There is also no reason at all why it can't be used very successfully for hunting small to medium sized game.
[ With NO mag changes this gives 99 shots! With ONE mag change each, this gives 189 shots.
