    COMP - TONE TOOL
    EQ - FIX TOOL
    IF IT'S:
    Sounding Good - COMP + EQ
    Sounding Bad - EQ + COMP
    thanks much Joe!

    Great tutorial again Joe.
    I've been building my effects chain for my Livestream project, with the various plug-ins in my Studio One 6 DAW. I started the FX channel with compressor then EQ, and then EQ to compressor. A manual A B thing. Because I have to do surgery on a few frequencies, starting with an EQ was the better choice. Then the serial compression afterwards sounds better as well.

    On the tone side, I was just playing with this last night. What I found also is that the old saying that EQ-COMP "softens" and rounds the sound some while COMP-EQ shapes it retains the clarity is pretty accurate. I actually liked both given that the source material was good. But ultimately as I am running an old console, if I want to use the board's EQ, most of the time I will be running a comp in the insert before the board EQ. So if i like the boards EQ, I'm going COMP-EQ. (Unless I run channel 1 EQ into Channel 2 insert with a comp but I lose a channel). To naturally fatten a snare though, I liked EQ into COMP.

  • @obidavekenobe

    Keep in mind the EQ does effect how the compressor compresses, meaning EQ influences the compressor's tonal qualities.
    So, if you boost some frequency, the compressor will see and act on the louder frequencies. Likewise, of you cut another frequency, you can "hide" that frequency from the compressor.
    When it comes to mixing, mix to what feels right - mix for whatever the song needs. It really depends on the mood your trying to set.

    As a producer and engineer. I’m gonna say EQ first. Just because some instruments may not need compression but mostly all need some form of eqing. I think I’ve gotten away with at least 4 songs that didn’t need compression on any instruments and it sounded lovely. But I was lucky of course because it was all written in the box electronically 😁

    I've always set my tone then compress. In my first studio I had a Makie 1604 mixer & a Audio Technica 4033 mic. Pulling down the mid freq on the Makie to about 10 o'clock got rid of the harsh resonance that mic put out. Then I'd taylor my compression to the vocalist's performance.
    Same with my Bass Guitar. I'm a funk bassist, so my bass has to sound right then I'd compress to help my playing control the peaks.

    Joe, great video as always. My personal ROT (rule of thumb) is reductive eq comes before compression, additive eq after.
    Get the bad stuff out before its "glued" together or add the extra (boom/fizz/whatever) after so the compression doesn't undo it. That's my logic anyway

      @@alejandrogallardoyes, if there's a frq that needs to come down I think its easier pre-comp. Then compression if necessary. If after that it still needs a boost somewhere then I'd EQ again post-comp.

    Thanks for your work. When I saw the title of this video, I thought: a hen or an egg goes first? I just want to contribute my view... When I listen and feel compression is needed, I would use compression first. Then if the track needs some EQing I would do that. Some people clean up the dirt before they hit record, some dont. If you dont you have to clean it after, if you do then comp first is fine. Though technically if you high passed before recording you still did eq first.

    On the topic of acoustic guitars it depends with me. If it is a heavy strumming part that has a lot of energy, I am more than likely gonna comp it. If it is more intimate of a performance with less instruments involved then yeah... I won’t comp it. But I usually glue it all together with buss comp anyways so it does indeed get some comp...

    • @marcotrosi
      @marcotrosi 4 года назад +1

      that's a comment I searched for (before I write something similar). And that would have been my question actually @JoeGilder. If the material already sounds good, and you compress first, then this means that the EQ has a different purpose, and I think it's for sound shaping. If the material needs some clean-up, so you EQ first, then this EQ is for getting rid of unpleasant frequencies. But then you compress, and then you could add again the sound shaping EQ. Which is what @Franjo is saying I hope. So here we are with a solution I would use too -> EQ (cleanup if necessary) - COMP - EQ (sound design).

    Always ask yourself what is making my ears 'run away' from listening. When your ears start cringing, and shutting down then some EQ and some Comp is required. Tone first, then balance. Parallel comp for fullness. You can also cringe from tone, tuning, and arrangement. EQ can help fix those, but way better to just get them performed properly.

  • @lightsjohnson8253

    Here’s what I’ve learned. There’s almost always going to be some unnecessary low end on most tracks one records.
    Why let the compressor go to work and spend all it’s precious energy on all of those “empty calories”?
    Filter first, then compress. Then EQ.

    • @obidavekenobe

    • @35milesoflead
      @35milesoflead 3 года назад

      @@officialWWM depends on your source. I mean my instant comparison is an acoustic guitar. If it's tuned to standard then there is no need for sub 80hz even getting onto the recording in the first place so an e.q. cut as you record removes the need to low cut it when you mix. You could argue that a 110hz cut is bang on when you record to allow the bass room. That's the whole GIRATS thing.
