- After a group of aliens grant ordinary substitute teacher Ralph Hinckley a red and black suit that gives him extraordinary superpowers, he discovers he has a problem. He lost the instruction manual. Ralph teams up with perpetually annoyed FBI agent Bill Maxwell, and together they take on the bad guys as best they can.
The Greatest American Hero was a superhero comedy series that ran for three seasons from 1981 to 1983. It starred William Katt as earnest substitute teacher turned bungling superhero Ralph Hinkley, the ever-amazing Robert Culp as his FBI handler Special Agent Bill Maxwell, and Conny Sellecca as Ralph’s lawyer Pam Davidson.
Ralph’s suit grants him a wide range of powers, including flight, super strength, invulnerability, telekinesis, and x-ray vision. However, without the instruction manual, he only discovers these abilities through trial and error, and often has little control over them. One running gag in the show plays off the fact that though the suit grants him the ability to fly, it does not endow him with any skill at landing. Ralph often crashes to earth in comedic heap after soaring great distances.
The Greatest American Hero was created by legendary writer and television producer Stephen J. Cannell with his frequent creative partner Frank Lupo serving as one of the show’s producers. It was the second show produced under the banner of Stephen J. Cannell Productions, and the first to bare the company’s now iconic logo.
The show’s theme song was extremely popular during the shows run and has etched its own mark on popular culture since. “Believe It or Not” was composed by Mike Post with lyrics by Stephen Geyer. It was sung by Joey Scarbury. The song debuted in the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at No. 2 on the charts.

@@MsSusanCunningham Same here, I'm in the UK 😟. Booo and Hisss I say! Boooo and Hisss.🙃 😁
I need the whole series on DVD one of my favorite shows
Growing pains uses the same theme song

This was our son Josh's favorite song and tv show when he was 4 yrs old. He unexpectedly passed away 7 months ago. I know he's smiling each time this is played! Love you Joshua!
I'm sorry. THE NAME IS A blessing. No accident or mistake it was a given name.
I just played it. Josh must be looking down on me.
He is happy, at peace, has all the joy of heaven, at the side of God.
Don't you worry, Sis, all is well.
I vow to play this every now and then in honor of josh.❤😢❤
My deepest sympathies.
I wish you happiness
My condolences to you and your family...This was my favorite theme song back in the day. Brings back memories.
When TV show intros took forever… but you loved because of their awesome, catchy theme songs.
@Hero 2 Zero
Ummm… not quite sure. Maybe I wrote in Hungarian or Serbian?
Back then, commercial time was a lot less per hour, so there was a lot more time for the show and the theme song. Sad how it's all changed.
😢
My thoughts EXACTLY!
Theme song was sometimes better than the episodes
I’m 51 yrs. Old I watched every episode lived the show and the song. Those were the good ole days. Fall Guy love boat Fantasy Island Happy Days etc.
Don't forget MASH
Awesome childhood!!!
Same bro.
😂.
I'm 51.
Me too!! I love all those shows!!
You forgot The A-Team
I’m trying to leave a message for George Costanza and I keep hearing this music
🎵 Believe it or not, George isn't at home, please leave a message at the beep!
I must be out or I'd pick up the phone! Where could I be?
Believe it or not, I'm not home!🎵
Ha! Good one.
I was looking for a comment like this 😂
Hi George, it's Alison. Ooh, I HATE that message!
Cuuu...stanza!!
The greatest theme song of all time.
The folks at WKRP in Cincinnati would like a word😂 But honestly I love both theme songs. Welcome Back Kotter too!
You got that right!
Chips season 3 or knight rider
Honestly? It's a serious contender. It's AMAZING
Mike Post wrote a lot of great theme songs.
7yr old me in the Philippines back in the 80’s. The streets nearly empty when this show is on. This theme song is tattooed in our brains. Such a great show and such a great time. One of my best memories.
Rpn 9
Same, it was a favorite in Indonesia too😄
this song was playing in the tattoo shop I was in a month ago in the Philippines 😂
Wow........as an American, I am proud that this represents our culture in other parts of the world.
Always killed me how he could fly but didn't know how to stop...so he had to fly into something in order to stop LOL
Don’t give _them_ ideas…!
Kinda like in my dreams sometimes I'm flying but I can never control my flight. Always trying to get control of the flight, never do,then I wake up never mastering flight
I mean, he lost the instruction manual. The aliens benefactors were benefactors, but they didn't think it through all the way.
1980s shows had the best theme songs.
For those too young to have enjoyed this masterpiece;
Aliens give a regular guy a Super Hero suit.
They tell him to do good with it.
He immediately loses the operating instructions and doesn’t know how to work it.
Each episode he finds out a new power that the suit gives him, but can’t control it.
.
The last Shazam movie totally stole this plot device.
.
The guy was a high school teacher.
His partner was a washed up FBI Agent.
His girl was Connie Sellica.
Boom! Classic.
Who's here 2024.

So much nostalgia, that era was so good
I love this song and I love the show. My husband was killed by a drunk driver. But Before he died, we used to sing and watch The Show together.
HAPPY TEARS
So much nostalgia in just 1:35.
Everytime I hear this song I end up breaking down crying. I'm to emotional.
It's so emotionally stirring. This song grabs you as soon as it starts and doesn't let go. I can't remember anybody ever talking while this show was coming on. It's just so hypnotising.
It's from a great time that's why. I still remember this show as a kid and loved this romantic TV theme song. Took me away from Cheers and Fall Guy and ATeam a little bit. Still can't believe he lost the instructions with him being a teacher tho, lol 🤗
I think we've all been there where your trying your best and fucking up every time. I was a 90s kids so I didn't grow up on it but saw it on family guy when Peter was skating to that song , now I skate to it too. But don't whipe out at the end like he did.... ouch.
same here😊😊
My love... you are crying because somewhere deep down, you recognize your own desire to be the hero in your life that you know you can be...
when this great show was on tv, my grandparents were alive, my mom was live and i was enjoying my youth. Miss those days
Same with me. Had like 12 channels. Born in 75. I absolutely loved this time in the 80s. My whole family was together, I get emotional just thinking about it
Same here...
Certainly wish that those times would last forever. 😢😢😢❤❤❤
Same here, I was 5. I had a big family with grandparents, uncles, aunts cousins, etc. and we all spent a lot of time together. So many of them are gone now. I would give anything to see them all again.
I loved this show so much as a kid and wish they would bring it back. We need an everyman superhero.
Haha same! I was just thinking how I loved this show and miss it so looked up the theme song.
Yes, and have Ralph return to mentor the new hero/heroine.
Part of me would like to see a new version of this show, but then part of me wouldn't, because they'd most likely turn it into an unwatchable woke piece of crap, that would be nothing like the original, which was already a damn good show, as movie, and TV producers have been doing to all my other favorite movie, and TV franchises.
@@HobbiesRfun The original was super "woke". That was the entire point of the show. He was a decent guy who taught his kids how to be decent adults and never abused his powers.
@@Freshbrood that's the opposite of what he was talking about, but okay.
So many great shows back in the 80’s with great theme songs, this show, The Fall Guy, Airwolf, Bosum Buddies, etc.
The A-Team, MacGyver
Not forgetting the Family Ties theme ❤
The 80's in the United States: Best. Decade. EVER!
Shout out to Fall Guy theme!
OMG Connie Sellecca was so pretty
GORGEOUS
70s and 80s kids had the best shows….catchy theme songs and all. We could have dance parties made up of all our cool tv show songs. 💃🏾
This show and song makes me feel nostalgic. God I miss the 80's.
I miss the 80s too...I'm 50 years old...and I still love the 80s shows...
@@DebraFruda which ones? Nazi demoncrats done took half of them off the air. They were too white for them.

Hope you’re having a good day bud. Robert Culp was great in Half Life 2 also
1:12 I loved this TV show, I got the record and played this song over and over
Luved this show growing up. RIP Robert Culp, RIP Stephen Cannell... In the heavens Thank You.
😫😭This song makes me cry!!!! Lol talk about total nostalgia!! Loved watching this as a kid! Wished they had all the late 80s & back TV shows & commercials! Just like stepping back to the future to watch it all over again…
Simpler, wholesome, happier times...and music can transport us back there in an instant. I understand your reaction, and many songs--unexpectedly--have the same effect on me.
@@michelbriere7362Right!?! I’m glad I’m not the only one.
As a child I loved this show. I heard the theme music at work on an oldies station. I came to RUclips to see what they had on the show. I might just treat myself to an episode tonight 💯
One of my favorite shows! I miss them days!!
This was such a fun show! We grew up in an awesome time! Heard this song playing over an oldies radio in a store the other day and had to find it again!
I can't believe this hasn't had a remake yet. Awesome series!
They did a " remake ", actually it was a spinoff where the aliens give the suit to a young woman.
Realy? What was the title of the spin of?
Hollywood would ruin it.
Reminds me of my childhood. One of my favorite television theme songs😀
Connie was such a babe.
Believe it or not, George isn't at home...
LOL!!!
🎵Believe it or not, I'm not home🎵
😂😂😂😂
I must be out or I’d pick up the phone. Where could I be?
And later on Flying High
Tru dat. Sssssmmknnn 🔥.
I wasn’t around in the 80’s but my grandma knew I really liked super heroes growing up. So she bought me the DVD sets to this show and I absolutely loved it. I watched it every day after school for awhile. Ah, memories.
I used to love this show when I was a kid in the 80’s
Look at what's happened to me
I can't believe it myself
Suddenly I'm up on top of the world
It should have been somebody else
Believe it or not, I'm walkin' on air
I never thought I could feel so free
Flyin' away on a wing and a prayer
Who could it be?
Believe it or not it's just me
Just like the light of a new day
It hit me from out of the blue
Breaking me out of the spell I was in
Making all of my wishes come true
Believe it or not, I'm walkin' on air
I never thought I could feel so free
Flyin' away on a wing and a prayer
Who could it be?
Believe it or not it's just me
Those times when Ralph was actually competent as a superhero ... amazing.
I watched this show every week. I loved the theme song (and still do). On Seth MacFarlane's Family Guy, Peter Griffin said that the most amazing thing about the show, "Greatest American Hero" is that after 40-years and only three seasons on the air, the show is still remembered because of this song.
It’s remembered as George’s answering machine.
@IanFooteRocks - I definitely enjoyed the show when I caught it. But the theme song was being played on the radio. It wasn't as popular as the Hawaii 5-0 theme but it charted.
@@GizmoFromPizmoIt made it to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the summer of 1981, kept from the top spot by "Endless Love." The theme song ended up being the 11th most popular song of 1981.
@@Texaslawhorn - _Endless Love_ is the most beautiful duet ever performed! Lionel Richie and Diana Ross hit a home run with that one.
So if the Greatest American Hero theme song was beaten, Endless Love is the one to do it.
@@GizmoFromPizmo yes! ❤️
80s, I miss you
This song, and show was such a treat. 80's
Nostalgia,as here I am many years into the future ❤️
Damn, this is back when they knew how to make music. Songs got heart and real melody and instruments.
This was the 80s!!! The awe and wonder of jumping on the couch with mom and dad and watching this. Man good times
i remember every word to this song from 1982 but I can't remember what i had for dinner on Monday. Make it make sense.
Watched this show every week as a kid in the 80s and even played it from a jukebox a few times!
Everyone that enjoys this theme song should search George Believe it or not to find the Seinfeld clip that pays homage to this song.
I had the biggest crush on William Katt never missed this show
OK Im not crazy. I have described this show to people for years! ITS REAL.
He never knew how to land after he flew!
i dug this show a a kid- the lead actor had a great charm about him
Indeed the dog of wisdom has led me here
Great theme song to a very underrated show. I used to watch Greatest American hero every week as a kid in the 80's 👍🙂
I remember this show on FX when they showed all the reruns.

I know the feeling.
I wish you and your Mom the very best.

This is really one of my favorite songs. It's now 2023 and I am still loving this song
The 80s were so awesome. We only had two channels. MASH used to play before the news, MacGyver after the news then this
Me and my grandpa used to watch this show all the time when I was a kid!
I like this song..I sang it in choir in junior high...as my very first solo...😊😊😊good memories..
This takes me back to Camden South in the 80’s when I was just a boy. Great times, life is beautiful
I greatly enjoyed watching this video. It brought back some wonderful childhood memories. This was actually the very first show which introduced me to Stephen J. Cannell.
What makes this show different from other superhero shows that the power is in the suit.
That was one of my all time favorites and i still sing the song at random moments. The lead actor was so cute! This series will always have a place in my heart!
How have they not made a film version of this yet? It could be absolutely hysterical if done right.
Brings back memories of my childhood. Too bad I can't watch from Canada.
I'm very surprised that this show hasn't had a reboot or turned into a movie.
If so, Ralph would probably be trans and a POC. They only care about representation now. They don't give a damn about story.
We just endured 15 years of nonstop superhero rehashes
@@youtubeaccount9058Yeah. It should've been rebooted about 15 years ago to make an impact.
Well..... hasn't been rebooted.....yet ...
A pilot was commissioned a few years back. It was to star an Indian American lady who was a general slacker. It never got picked up, so we never got the updated "Believe it or not."
This might be the show with the highest ratio of: TV Theme Everyone Knows - to - TV Show They Haven't Actually Seen.
I remember this show when I was a kid! classic, nostalgia!
I'm 54 years old and I love this song..... I can't stop listening to her Those were times when the producers understood that you enjoyed the series from the "intro" to the end
Love this show Connie is so beautiful great show
I always love this tv series when i was a kid........how time flies........now i have white hair all over ....and this is still one of my fave. It brings back a lot of good memories..
I remember the night this debuted. Mom's made a big bowl of popcorn and red punch ... 1983
Dang. I used to love watching this show. I used to dream that I could fly as well. How did that work out? Hahaha 😄 I love this song much. Where are my people at? Hahaha
Right here, brotha
I hear you! 😊
best of my 80's tv series. very remarkable song😊 it bring back my childhood years. 😂 great!!
I love this song and the TV show plus I was a kid when it came out my favorite part is with Andre the giant was in it
The best.....love this song!!!
This theme never fails to put a smile on my face.
The memories… a lot of my loved ones I’ve lost we’re around during this time. 😔😔
Absolutely loved that show. Great song memorable moments forever!!!!
My favorite part I would allways stop and sing this song everytime this show came on TV.
Robert Culp & Stephen J. Cannell: In Memoriam.
Probably my favorite theme song!
The only theme song tied with it IMHO is the Season №1 opening credits to the Lynda Carter _Wonder Woman._ But _The Greatest American Hero_ was a №1 hit song at one point and in the Top 40s for a long time, and I don’t recall that being the case for _Wonder Woman’s_ theme.
The shot of him teleporting into the car only to look confused is so funny
He wasn't teleporting. The suit also gave him the power of invisibility but didn't know how to use it. He was just becoming visible again and was surprised because he thought he was going to be stuck being invisible forever.
I’ll be honest, I used to think this show was dumb as a kid. The feeling has not changed. However, love that song
Believe it or not, George isn't at home.
It kills me that no one remembers this song/ show. I work at a radio station and we've had a couple of contests to identify old TV theme songs, and no one has ever got this!
I remember watching it when I was 4yrs old.
It’s a shame I keep forgetting how gorgeous Connie Selleca was. Good god.
She should have played Lois lane in the Christopher Reeve Superman films . She was a stunner.
That song brings me back to my teenage years in the 80s... I used to watch the Show with my grandparents. What a time that was.😊😊😊😊😊
So many memories ❤ great actors the song stuck to you forever never gets old listening to it !!!
8th in my top ten tv theme songs of all time.
2024… anyone still remembers this great theme song from a bygone era (the great era called the 1980s👍)
When this theme song came in, I was pretending to fly on the couch. And my mother yelled at me! 😂
It's a funny thing. I was in my early 20's when this was on and didn't see much of it....And yet that theme song for me is the 80's
Team Ralph! Ralph, Blink man, El Chapulin Colorado, Bionic Woman, and Max! 😄
This show was a great show and was very underated William Katt played a unforgettable role on this show
I was a kid in Italy when this show came with the original opening and even if i didn't knew english at the time i loved it instantly.
When i grew up and learned english i appreciated it even more.
