I've put my Laser Cutter into full production helping me build armor. It gets to cut out heavy leather and engrave it with some of the Viking Artwork I have. I've had a few lasers and the Creality Falcon 2 is the first I've gone full steam ahead on. The 22 Watt Laser Module is great, and enables me to cut out up to 13 ounce leather so far with a couple of passes.
This video is just me discussing the Creality Falcon 2 and what I've been doing with it and why I'm giving it a big thumbs up.

This is awesome! But, could you please make a follow up video with some do's and don'ts. Main for thickness of leather, power settings, and angle of cuts.

Can't do any angles, but I do have some power settings I've been working on. I'll post a pinned comment about them.

This is awesome! I bought the cheapest laser I could find, and I am blown away at what these machines can do. It's a real game changer. What I like the most is the low stakes making, if I were to spend hours making something by hand and I screw it up it really sucks. If the laser screws it up, it's like oh well let me throw another piece on the laser and run it again.

What are YOUR Laser Settings for Cutting / Engraving? Here are some of mine so far, but I'm still fairly new to it all. Using Lightburn I tend to do 75 power and 75 speed for my engraving so far on most any thickness, and then to cut/line I do 5 speed 100 Power 2 passes on my lines. I'm still playing with these but would love to hear more settings if anyone has some, or thinks mine suck! :)

Hi, I do the same thing as you in the video. A little tip after lasering, I use an eraser, it's a great way to get the burnt things off. Try this if you feel like it.

what are your laser settings for the carving? I love the black raven piece. I find I can't get deep enough cuts on my laser fo have the design show up nicely like yours does when dyed black

I have some old notes that mention 75 speed 75 power. I think that was on the 22w

Hi, I love your leather work!! I watched a previous video where you mentioned wanted feedback on your t-shirts. Here's my 2 cents. I think you would sell a bunch more shirts if you printed images of your work on them. Gorget at the collar (front and back), breastplate on the chest. Gauntlets on the sleeves of hoodies, etc.

Would it work to use the laser to cut in the pattern and then do hand tooling? Seems like this might be the best of both worlds.

    • @DarkHorseWorkshop

Totally could get the lines done then bevel it, not 100% sure on how it would look but it's certainly a thing. I guess I could just... do that... lol - Video Content!

We’re sourcing a laser at the moment. Have looked at seven manufacturers or so. Primary use isn’t for leather; but 😏did take some veggie tan approx 6oz for testing. (generally work w 3, 6, 10+oz). Wasn’t looking to do full cut-through nor field pattern etching. Wanted to see how light (eg thin kerf very shallow) of line etching could be done to xfer patterns for swivel knifing/carving. Also testing punch-through cutting to speed up lacing. Want to keep the handcrafted look while speeding things up a bit (32+ hobbies, per the wife). Learned a thing or two. In several cases was happily surprised w result for what I was looking for in my use case. Luckily the two (possibly 3..one more demo to go) lasers that were good at leather also serve for our primary intended use (non-leather).
P.S. if you get a honeycomb, might want to make sure it’s ferromagnetic..MagSwitch magnets are great ($$) N52s are our second choice disc/cyl/sq whatever shape you pref, K&J Magnetics have a great selection & fast/reasonable ship - have used them for many many years.
As always YMMV. Just sharing. Nothin more nuthin less.
Not associated w any brands/mfg mentioned other than as a paying customer.
    Have a good’un now!

Curious about the magnet info. Not quite sure what I get you're using them for. Hold the leather down nicely?

@@DarkHorseWorkshop yes to hold down leather that might tend to wanta be a bit curled/curly. Used ‘em on the samples (about 6oz veggie) we laser cut/scribed. Was using some roughly 6x9ish leather pieces on which to scribe a Rohan inspired horse head/mane pattern. The laser was an RF tube and after a bit of fiddling made a very nice shallow-fine thin scribe line. Sending some more cut samples to another laser mfg in Colorado on one of their RF tubed lasers next week.

Pin embroidery? Maybe some garment weight hide, or thinner oil tan. Something you can push through easily. 2 to 3 ounce.

Do you clean the residue off with rubbing alcohol or something else? I have a 60W Boss laser. Ive done some patterns on leather and its been really awesome. Did yours come with proprietary software? I've been using Lightburn and it works excellently.

If your dying black I just dust the residue out of the carvings with a hair dye brush. Sand paper edges and dye it black. Works well.

Air assist will get rid of most of the soot, but I have no idea how you manage to be in the same room as an open laser cutting leather. I don't even like being around my CO2 laser with its forced air exhaust going out the window.

It's sitting on my downdraft table which has a fan under it pulling air. :)

@@DarkHorseWorkshop Ya, even in an enclosed machine it stinks the place up bad, and all I was doing was raster engraving some SCA officer emblems. Vector cutting isn't quite so bad, but still pretty horrible. Might want to try doing the carving with vector cuts. Much less material to burn.
