And if further pushed, most will also say - yes, sadly, 'poverty' (although they would usually avoid saying this 'on-camera' because it looks impolite)! These are the words that usually come to their minds, when you say 'India'. Just goes to show how far India has to go in terms of making any real imprint in the world in terms of positive soft power. @@addykhaneja - Actually it not surprising. Cricket is the most popular game in India, and so we automatically assume it is equally popular in other countries - which is actually not the reality. In Australia for instance, Cricket is only the fourth most popular game. The most popular games by far are AFL (Australian Football) with a spectatorship of 8 million, followed by Rugby League. This is then followed by Soccer (European Football). Cricket is only a distant fourth, with a spectatorship of just over 1 million. So, in fact most Australians will be unable to name even many of the Australian Cricket players, leave alone the Indian players.
Instead if you ask an Australian about an AFL or Rugby player or game, they will be able to reel out all the statistics and games going back 40 years!
