Now THAT is a star. No voice to speak of, not a natural dancer, but talent, drive, and energy turned a faded movie star into a first-class musical comedy star. Brava, Lauren Bacall! You did it. 🥰
I'm surprised this was aired on Network TV with the gay bar scene intact..I mean even though we were busting down barriers with shows like 'All in the Family' and 'Maude'..this is a pleasant surprise
God, what a thrill. Seeing that remarkable woman and that remarkable scene again. They sure don't make stars like that any more!!! She, Angela Lansbury, Chita Rivera. Do musicals get any better. Thanks so much for posting this masterpiece!!!
... I got the OBC on 4-track reel-to-reel tape 'wayyy back then. RTR had amazing sound quality, with none of the snap, crackle & pop vinyl had, which I couldn't stand. I now have the CD. The incandescent energy that The Boys gave this number spoke volumes to me back then ... and a whole lot more nowadays. In my mind I'm forever dancing along with them, and I'm *not* 67. I actually met Lauren Bacall in NYC around the time she was doing the show. A strange twist of Fate landed me in her apartment, with a college buddy of mine. I'd of course gone into uber-polite diplomatic shock, but I heard myself open with "Miss Bacall, it's an overwhelming honor to meet you, I'll never, ever forget this, and how I ended up here is so crazy you'd believe it. Please do feel free to get rid of us immediately if we're not vaguely entertaining in some way". (I have a photographic memory, mind you. And *this* memory was burned deeply). She looked me dead square in the eyes, threw her head back and howled. She loved it, and my college buddy (ahem) and I spent about 3 hours with her. She put me at ease enough to get back into my own mind, and her absolutely down-to-earth affect taught me so very much about my fascination with Theater. She was profoundly generous, wisely and effectively dealing with my at-first desperate need to get the Hell out of there, where I felt I absolutely didn't belong. In retrospect, I can compare her to the great Zoe Caldwell, with whom I found myself in an elevator after I'd got free audience tickets to "The Tonight Show" (Vikki Carr was subbing for Johnny). This particular experience was a complete ambush, but as brief as it was, it was just as wonderful. Again, a brilliantly talented person of ineffable generosity, grace and style.
Good Lord, can you believe she did this eight performances for the run of the show -- which was not brief!!! Another star that deserves every accolade she ever got!!!
I saw Applause with Lauren Bacall at the Opera House Theatre in Chicago 71,72. The Musical was so good I ran out and bought the reel to reel tape. This musical I remember the best because Lauren Bacall's performance was outstanding.
Thanks for making me feel OLD.... I was in a production of "Applause" in (gasp!) 1973. I was the goofy dancer sucking on his finger...the scene ended with me announcing that "...I really love HER!" and then a couple of the leather dudes carried me offstage while I was screaming "Margo! Margo!". Ah, the folly of youth... And let's not forget that there is even a song in the production titled "Fasten Your Seat Belts"....
You officialy my hero, I was born in 1995, I'm 26 but that scene impacts me too much, I don't even want to imagine what it has meant for previous generations that didn't have major lgbt references! thanks
In the mid '90s I DJed a gay dance club in SF and at the height of the evening I'd throw this on and all the kids would go wild and start dancing all crazy psychedelic.
I WAS ANNE BAXTERS HAIRDRESSER FOR THE 2 YEARS PRIOR TO HER UNTIMELY DEATH. SHE TOLD ME DOING THIS MUSICAL VERSION, AND PLAYING MARGO WERE THE BIGGEST HIGHLIGHTS OF HER LIFE IN THE THEATER. THANKS SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS!
You're lucky to have met Anne Baxter. All About Eve is one of my favourite films of all time. BTW, I think you she played Eve Harrington. Bette Davis played Margo Channing (she's my favourite actress of all time)
Lauren Bacall is fantastic the lyrics are great as is her dancing. For those that judge remember its was of its time. I saw this show and it was fantastic. Thank you for downloading this rare clip.
I have and continue to love Lauren Bacall. The gay bar performance of the song Alive . . . SUPERB ! ! ! Thank you, my wonderful husband, for sharing this for me.
I remember seeing this. I also remember - as a gay Broadway-obsessed teen in a small city in Canada - being amazed what I was actually SEEING ON my TEEVEE ...!!!
How wonderful to experience this fabulous clip of Applause based upon the book "All About Eve". Lauren Bacall was fabulous. Thanks for sharing. Barbara Kent, author SUCCESS In the Words of the Masters
WOW! I could probably recite all of the dialog from "All About Eve" verbatim and indeed, having bought the soundtrack to this musical way back when can probably sing every song. That said, I'd never seen the T.V. performance of "Applause" nor the actual stage performance itself. I LOVE how cutting edge this is/was for its time. I just bought a copy of the T.V. version and can't wait to watch it.
Lovely anecdote. I have had the fortune of seeing Lee Roy in 3 shows. He's a great stage presence. He played Duane who unfortunately had left the show by the time this was filmed. This clip is so wonderful. As a long time Bacall fan it's a real gem.
That was awesome!! "But Alive" was the first song I loved on this album. When my old friend (and mentor in much of classic film and stage) showed me the LP and told me it was the musical version of "All About Eve" I thought he was putting me on. When I saw the LP in a used record store I jumped on it and very soon knew almost every song by heart. I'm SO looking forward to the day they release this on dvd!
Many decades ago, a friend and I performed this number before a Dignity LGBT catholic audience and they loved us! Thank you Lauren for your gifts! We've never forgotten you all these decades.
the person who played Eve opposite her in that production is playing fraulein schneider at the moment in Cabaret at the lyric. One of the best I've ever seen, I'd say she's right up there with Sheila Hancock. Finally a schneider who's commanding and can belt. :P
Wow this just blew my socks off , I remember many of drag queens doing this song and they were great, but never knew the actual set up where and why this puts it all together thanks so much
Wow....the perks of being a star. The last time I went into a gay bar and tried to use the light over the pool table as a swing, I got kicked out and "banned for life".
I remember being so thrilled watching this on TV, as I knew I'd never get to see it otherwise. I believe it was filmed in London while she was doing the show there. Can anybody verify that?
Jeffrey Newman, thank you so much for this rarity. I hope I'm not being naive in saying that the broadcasting of this scene back then was daring, even more so than its source on Broadway. I can just imagine some bigoted TV viewers going into a big pillow-biting fit over that gay bar scene. This kind of thing was simply not seen on TV.
I never knew this existed....I've seen clips of Lauren Bacall from the Tony's but not this....ever !!! GREAT RARE find !!! BTW to the person claiming a more liberal age before Reagan, Nixon was in the white house at the time. But ya know, Nixon may have been more Liberal in a liberal sense. LOL
This is, I assume, from the televsion version of the show. Do you have it complete? If so, could you PLEASE post Bacall singning "Welcome to the Theater"? I saw the show twice at the Palace Theater with Bacall, and once when Anne Baxter replaced her.
Oh My Lordy-Lauren Bacall as margot Channing- the musical no less-Im in heaven- does any one know who did the choreography?? Michael Bennet maybe?? just amazing
about the guys they wrote below shame on them ......... Dear Lauren you will be in our hearts forever , no matters what these freaking guys told about you ... you will be in our hearts forever RIP
@kelseyann4 While her name really is Betty Perske, she has a ...not-so-nice nickname which contains her 1st name (Betty). 'Betty Ballbuster.' She got it during her run on this musical, actually - based on what (some people) felt she was like to work with.
I saw Bacall do this on Broadway. A year later when she left to do the tour, she was replaced by Anne Baxter the original Eve Harrington. Although initially seen as a casting ploy, Baxter got wonderful reviews. The third B'way replacement was Arlene Dahl-- not so good. I think Eleanor Parker did one of the tours.
Love that the back wall sometimes reads "Gay Power"

This version looks like a soundstage as opposed to a broadway set, does it look different ?
@@DNBursky It was TV special....
Absolutely amazing that this made it to network television. A great talent.

I just know that no pool table lighting fixture I ever saw would be that rugged!!!
Thanks for posting! Always was curious about 'Applause'.
I remember seeing this. I also remember - as a gay Broadway-obsessed teen in a small city in Canada - being amazed what I was actually SEEING ON my TEEVEE ...!!!
Genius, genius, genius! I used to have this on vhs, but a loaned it out never to be returned. Thanks for posting this! It's perfect!
WOW! What star power she had! Nothing compares today.
I saw this as a televised version of the play. I remember it well, but great seeing it again here. thanks for posting.

A truly talented actress from a golden period of the American film. rest in peace.
I saw Lauren Bacall perform this on the West End in - what? 1973? I was 8 years old, and the show still stays with me! THANK YOU for posting this!
Grandma Grandma ❤
Lauren must have had a Highpoint Coffee before she went out. She's ALIVE with deep rich flavor.
I never knew how good Lauren Bacall was in this scene until seeing this now!-Thank You!
I have longed to see this for decades! Thanks for posting. Amazing! Ron Field's staging and Bacall's dynamism: A++++

Reminds me of the first gay bar I went to - Blades, Melbourne, 1977! Lauren Bacall wasn't there tho. ;-)
We gays love our divas! "Aliiiiive!!"

A true original.
Interesting trivia, thanks.
I love how the neon lights in the background almost spell out GAY POWERS....

Do u have more of this ? a gay bar , a fashion in those day and the music that give glimsps to A chorus line !

@DiscoMashter It was broadcast on network TV in the '70s, with Bacall and Larry Hagman. I've seen the whole thing. It's campy and fun.
Jeffrey Newman, thank you so much for this rarity. I hope I'm not being naive in saying that the broadcasting of this scene back then was daring, even more so than its source on Broadway. @haroldandmaud0 Actually it was not MB. It was Ron Field, who was both director and choreographer.
Swan club
That's the brightest most well lit gay bar I've ever seen--until closed for sweeping and mopping. by well lit I don't mean the guys.
Thanks so much for posting this. I'd love to see the whole show! Is it possible to get it?
is there someway i can get this track in high def? I'm inlove...and I love hearing 'Eve' and 'Margo'

@TX1961 Bacall wasn't cast for her singing ... she was cast because she was Bacall ...
This was filmed in London at the end of the APPLAUSE season there. I think it drags as there is no applause or laughter.
