Unfortunately I think she could be right to be worried. Although I think fans of The Batman will be on board with this as its clearly cut from the same cloth which I'm incredibly excited about
I think most viewers would expect a Batman related show to have characters and storylines people know, since the Adam West and animated shows did. It's important to market the show in the right way and manage expectations. I'm sure there will be plenty of commentators blaming the fandom [again] if this show flops, rather than discussing if anyone asked for a Penguin centric show in the first place.
Villains actually staying around and evolving, being a constant part of the world, is an IMPORTANT and extremely cool part of comics. Spider-Man and Batman villains are always around. They don’t introduce themselves and then just leave after one defeat. Most comic book franchises do this. It’s why it felt so cool seeing Scarecrow pop up in every Nolan movie. It felt SO Batman. I’m glad Reeves is onto this too. I would love the rogues gallery to continue, build, evolve. Not as main villains but popping up and serving a purpose in each instalment,
True, but TV and Movies are not comic books but adaptations. Myself, I don't think these cameos really work (like the Bane example Grace cites) unless there's a reason for the character to be there that advances the plot/story. I'm glad to hear the Penguin won't have any Easter Eggs to distract from his story.
I was hoping Matt would take the cue from Batman: Hush film (instead of comic) and lead into Riddler becoming Hush in the movies (not in number 2 tho, it'd be to soon).

That 9 to 5 moment with Penguin and his sidekick was super funny!!! And when Sofia said she had someone who snitched on Oz, i was relieved that it wasnt Victor 😂
Grace, I know you never read the Batman comics, but here it is: Oswald is like Ra's al Ghul, a behind the curtains kinda guy but unlike Ra's, who only shows up when the final stages of his master plan are put into effect, Oswald KNOWS his success RELIES on him NEVER getting BATMAN's attention! He is not the Joker, nor Two Face, nor Poison Ivy, he works in the shadows and he always works to never be linked or tied to any of his crimes! THAT is why Batman has never caught him and that is also why Batman prefers to bully him when he needs his help! Unless you understand who Oswald truly is, you will never get this show! This first episode showed but a glimpse of how smart and cunning he is! Also, Batman would not be drawn by intergang violence UNLESS innocent lives are at stake! So, you ALSO need to know who BATMAN truly is to understand why Batman most likely will not show up in this show and being a Bats' fan, I am glad he won't! It would mean this Penguin would have dropped the ball and Ozzie is no fool! So, until you understand BOTH characters' CORE, you will not understand this show! I loved the first episode and Colin Farrell is absolutely REMARKABLE here, as he was in THE BATMAN! I got Emmy vibe off his acting here and if he keeps this up, he WILL be a serious contender for next year's Emmys! THAT is how good he is!

Yes it will because only hardcore fans of the Batman will really care. Especially with DCU series coming out DC and WB are going to compete with each other.

Well put. So much of Grace's fanbase is the same terminally online folks who need to be drawn online to talk about it, watch vids for confirmation, talk about memes, etc. A good show can be just that; a good show. This fact continues to prove it's point
People did like it and it was really good, she’s talking about the numbers cause she’s always been a number girl. That’s just how the industry works. Even if a show is good but not a lot of people watch it, it will count as a fail. Doesn’t mean she hates it. It has to be a perfect balance between creativity and business for a franchise to thrive. Thats why she’s scared for this show turning like andor, even if its really” good.
Andor was loved by those who watched it. The problem is not many people watched it in the first place. Disney ordered a second season because it's the best reviewed Star Wars product since the original trilogy and they think more people will watch the first season when the second one arrives.
I feel like anytime shows or corporations specifically try to create a meme it just dies pretty quickly. Memes from shows are usually funny because they’re just single lines or looks that are taken out of context and repurposed by fans for something else. I stay away from internet fandoms generally because I’m 27 but Matt Reeves didn’t write in the ‘what are you showing me’ line in hopes it would become a meme. People obviously just took that line because it was ambiguous enough to apply to anything else
Loved the first episode; was enthralled with the master class of acting on display. In reference to Easter Eggs and Cameos; unfortunately that’s the privy of James Gunn who decides ultimately what is allowed, he doesn’t want conflict with characters he’s going to introduce early in his DC Batverse with Matt’s
constant cameos and Easter eggs to episodes of clone wars I hadn't watched is why I've fully given up on Star Wars stuff. you saying there's no Easter eggs is like the biggest recommendation you could've given me.
Everyone is so fn impatient. Did batman not say gotham is a big city and he cant be everywhere at once? Reeves is BUILDING a lore and character that is gotham city and this show will 100% tie in to the next batman movie. I feel like fans are so spoiled by mainstream comic book fan service when they dont realize this is a fan service in a way as well. Gotham is being fleshed out with a street level point of view and it makes it feel tangible and real. Please watch ep 1 if u havent
I am going to watch this show treating it as a crime /gangster tv series and not superhero tv series... because from that perspective it looks awesome. Can't wait to watch it
I dont understand why you spent so much time of the video worrying about how other people might feel about the series. I feel like it's more "Movie Math" material instead of a review. Very odd choice.
That's what she always does. It's just part of her thing at this point. She likes to get into how successful something may or may not be. Not saying it's good or bad, but it's expected.
I've always been enamored with mobster movies. De Niro's Al Capone, the various Gatti movies, Good Fellas. If the superheroes are kept out, and the focus is on the mob politics, I'll like it 🙂
I agree with them introducing Panguine without the distraction of other well-known characters. The show introduces us to his humanity at the very beginning of his career and before becoming a blip on Gothem's radar. We need to know the soul of the character before he is pursued by the authorities. I love the human interest angle; it made me feel for the character, which is a new perspective for me. Colin did a phenomenal job becoming one with the prosthetics. He was, for the most part, unrecognizable as an actor but the embodiment of the character! The "kid" played his part very well too, and the chemistry between them was palpable. I cannot wait to see the next episode.
Waiting for episode 7. This has been a great show to watch weekly. I love the three main characters, and I would love a season 2. However, having miniseries for different villains is a great idea if they are as good as this one. I would love a Sofia Falcone show. This is hands down the best comic book show of the past few years.
Even if its a good show you can't have Penguin and the Mafia doing stuff in the underworld and none of the major Gotham PD like Foley, Gordon, Renee, and more dont show up. Not having Batman is fine because he could be busy on other case. But no Gotham PD? No way.
i'm not a huge Batman fan, just don't like the character, never did, but i LOVE a good Gotham. The FOX show's best feature to me was its depiction of the city itself and for a while i felt like nothing could top that, until The Batman came out and showcased an even better version, or at the very least on par. This just GETS what i want Gotham to look like. It's not just New York by another name, and them filming a lot of it in Scotland might be part of the reason why it's so good. So, even if there aren't any big easter eggs, nor do i particularly care for the character, i'm watching this show for the city itself.
it’s really sad that you’re wondering if people will like a show because it only has story and character development instead of comic book references.
It’s a sad reflection of the audience but I think she is right to worry
i mean if your going to tell a gotham story, where all these guys exist
it would make sense they also appear

I stay away from internet fandoms generally because I’m 27 but Matt Reeves didn’t write in the ‘what are you showing me’ line in hopes it would become a meme. People obviously just took that line because it was ambiguous enough to apply to anything else
Loved the first episode; was enthralled with the master class of acting on display.
In reference to Easter Eggs and Cameos; unfortunately that’s the privy of James Gunn who decides ultimately what is allowed, he doesn’t want conflict with characters he’s going to introduce early in his DC Batverse with Matt’s
SO HAPPY FOR CRISTIN MILIOTI!
constant cameos and Easter eggs to episodes of clone wars I hadn't watched is why I've fully given up on Star Wars stuff. you saying there's no Easter eggs is like the biggest recommendation you could've given me.
Saying that ultimately Penguin turns out to be really evil sounds like a massive spoiler.
Can't wait to watch it
I was excited since the first trailer. So happy to hear the comparison with Andor! I know I’m going to love it!
I think people are going to like it just because Colin Farrell makes it amazing penguin plan and simple
Barry keoghan should of been in it
Looks really sweet! Can’t wait to check out the series. Return to the Iceberg Lounge.
Is The Penguin trying to be like Joker where the creators are giving him deeper character arcs and motivations?
I gave it a try today... and oh my boy! I LOVED IT! so very well made and I am not a Batman fan at all....
THERE ARE A FEW EASTER EGGS!
I cannot wait to see the next episode.
i loved the first episode and i cant wait for more. If you compare it Scarface and The Sopranos then i am really excited for more
CRISTIN IS KILLING IT!
It's awesome when you review a show as when you started the channel. I stopped watching when Disney pushed for your reviews. Great to have You back!
Loved Sofia and Victor... Can't wait to see how they develop.. A++ for me! Glad Batman doesn't overshadow the story they are trying to tell.
So.....about those cameos, again.
I love Cristin Milioti so much and she's so underrated. I guess I wouldn't with a-list status on anyone though. it sounds like hell!
Waiting for episode 7. This has been a great show to watch weekly. I love the three main characters, and I would love a season 2. However, having miniseries for different villains is a great idea if they are as good as this one.
I would love a Sofia Falcone show.
This is hands down the best comic book show of the past few years.
Best show this year!!
I can feel my brain cells leaving the longer I watch this
Even if its a good show you can't have Penguin and the Mafia doing stuff in the underworld and none of the major Gotham PD like Foley, Gordon, Renee, and more dont show up.
So, even if there aren't any big easter eggs, nor do i particularly care for the character, i'm watching this show for the city itself.
what made u laugh about episode 1@Grace
YES THE PENGUIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very intrigued by this show but I’m very surprised nobody’s talking about it I think it’s doa
everyone talking about it where you been?
