This is an incredible interpretation of one of my favourite of Debussy's piano pieces. The tone and sonority is perfect, the voicing is so clear and the piece lives as if breathing in the Anacaprian air. My hat is once again off to Mr Hamelin!
You are so right about Hamelin's wonderful interpretation of this difficult piece. He never succumbs to the temptation to play the technically difficult passages in a mere virtuosic fashion but achieves the more difficult feat of, in your words maintaining that special "tone and sonority" that elusive impressionistic sound so essential for Debussy's music.
Dear all! I can't find Hamelin's recital where He played all of Debussy's preludes from Book II. It has vanished. I do have it from Hyperion, but the live one just sounded different. If anybody has it let me know.

This piece to me has one of the biggest sweeps of emotional landscape soaring over another place for me.
0:27 It's a lovely morning in the village, and you are a horrible goose.

I am both honored and concerned at what my music has become

House house
Always be one of my favorites, not a fan of this interpretation. Ivan Ilic's is simply the greatest.

Hamelin's performance reminds me of Brexit - a bloody mess!
I was going to disagree, but then I heard (what sounded to me like) some bad notes in the final bars (2:30). Ouch!
...like Brexit?...there could be no higher compliment. thank you ...

Upside-down and rather out-of-date!
Why must he play everything as a virtuoso show piece? this has no charm or atmosphere. Not like Debussy at all!
+cynic150 totally agree with you.
Can't agree more
Certainly sounds more like Manhattan than Anacapri, but that's an interesting perspective too. Not sure what's up with 1:32, though.
I realized when you mentioned Manhattan how similar Hamelin makes it sound to rhapsody in blue, in some parts lol
