Man, what a bummer! This brings back great memories when I had my RM 250 back in 1990. It was so fast and so fun, and just sounded bad ass. Good luck, keep the two strokes alive!!
If you want your piston and/or cylinder to last longer with this kind of driving, you need to learn to use the clutch when not on throttle. Engine breaking with 2 stroke does not apply oil to the cylinder and in this kind of use you need to apply the clutch when slowing down and even better rev it a little while holding clutch to keep oil and fuel flowing.
It does not apply fuel to the engine, fuel is more important in preventing heatseizure than oil is, that is because fuel is the only thing preventing the piston from expanding into the cylinder
This is something all 2 stroke guys learn the hard way. Spark plugs are cheaper than top ends. In all reality with the new cylinder plating processes, you should only need to replace rings as they wear unless you subject the bike to high temps from lean afr or friction damage from lean or inadequate 2 stroke oil.
Nah unfortunately I still have a month or two until I can get on a bike. This video is from a couple days before my crash. And yeah I've blown a hole through these VForce reeds 3 times already!

Even if you don't run reed stops, v-force reeds will last a season or more. Had the same thing happen to my yz250 a couple week ago still haven’t got around to fixing it so I just have been riding my yz125 and having even more fun
Atleast it wasn’t a major blow up. You just need a new piston and you’re good. I had my bikes back tire lock up while going 45 mph and had to push it with the tire locked for a quarter mile. The kick starter was also locked up. Was so tired from dragging the bike I almost passed out lol. Look into the root cause though, you likely need to jet a little richer. It’s cold out, and the only time I have seized a top end has been when it’s been cold and riding hard.
i had a yz125 which had a piece of the slide in the carburettor broke off and went into the cylinder squashed the piston and squeezing the rings but lucky i had no cylinder damage and the metal go spat out the exhaust. did a top end n got a 2nd hand carb then went back to rippin it again
There's soooooo many of those videos on RUclips. Just remember to orient your wrist pin clips so they point at the spark plug or the crank. Never any other direction or they pop out and get crunched between the cylinder and piston, or down in the bottom end.
I had a crankcase blow open on a bike before, effin sucked. Any pieces of the motor falling out? It was still running tho, I'm hoping its just the rings maybe and you lost compression.
If you want a bike you can wring out all day and get the full potential out of I'd say go with a 125, what they lack in power compared to a 250 they make up for by making it usable power. That's not to say 250s don't have usable power, it's just that it's a bit too much (at least once the powerband starts) in some conditions. I can crawl up a gnarly Enduro trail in the mountains just a smidge above idle in 3rd, and it still tries to rip my arms off when I give it a blip to get up on a boulder lol wears me out quick. It's fun af but simultaneously shit your pants terrifying how fast you can go through the rev range when you go WOT from a crawl. I can cruise the desert or dirt roads in the mountains all day and never go lower than 4th gear on the other hand, and it sips fuel because I'm zipping along at like 1/4 throttle or less. I went about 40 miles round trip up to Cripple creek CO from my town on half a tank with fuel to spare. Best advice I can give ya is to weigh your options, where do you want to ride it, what's your skill level, how much do ya weigh, etc. Then just figure out what kind of power would suit you best. If you have any friends or family that ride two strokes, ask if you can do a test ride to get a feel for em. I let my friend ride my 250, and they were looking at either a 125, 250 two stroke, or a 450 four stroke, and they decided they were gonna find a 125 to test ride. Mind you they raced 450 quads but never touched a bike lol.
@@100GTAGUY Thanks I will try to see I know one of my bros has a 125 ive rode it before but not for long I will just have to see if I can find a 250 to sorta compare
If your motor sucked a piece of the reed, particulate could have gone through your bearings on the crank. Look for bluing on the rod ends. Check the play on the rod as well. I would replace the crank, top end and main bearings on the case if it were me.
Didn't sound lean maybe just worn. I hear some crunching too on the run before the last corner but it could be something else I'm hearing. I would check rod play and do a leak down test for sure.
They don't suck they perform better than stock but at the same time don't last as long as stock, kind of like expecting a 1000hp engine to last longer that a stock motor. High performance doesn't equal longevity, usually the opposite. Check and replace the reeds more often or go back to stock.
Happened twice to my Yamaha 250 two stroke. First bike. Next bike luckily a race built Norton. Rode hard for years only the occasional electric problem. Rode hard 5-6 years. Just bought a Triumph liter bike triple. Because I can. But I no longer think two strokes provide reliable power. Imagine trying to hold a liter two stroke together. A good four stroke is your friend. Most two strokes die an early death. -Matt’s dad
I just picked up the boyesen rad valve for my 150sx. Haven't put it on yet and it's winter time rn but maybe ditch those vforce reeds lol. Stock Reed valve with boyesen pedals are also a good reliable option
You can hear the lack of oil in the fuel. When your 2,stroke takes off like a race car. You should check your mixture. You can hear the dry exhaust sound. This was running too lean on oil. Sounds like straight gas with no mixed oil running thru it.
Blowing up a bike sucks. Especially when its catastrophic, I did it to my yz250f back in high school. Whole engine was fucked, but somehow I traded it for a klx110 running and kx100 that needed a rebuild so it wasnt so bad after all.
Did that on my 01exc after some tight single trail (it was hot) I let it cool while gently winding the kicker so it didn't grab the bore and started her back up again once cooled down, it was down on power and I did a topend once I got home and I was sweet
Yeah. Gotta pull the clutch in after a max effort WOT drag, or repeated drags. Keep things lubricated with some throttle blips. Sucks man. I blew up a 125 when I was young, after a fresh top end. Ringing it out through the gears hard, then a long engine braking decel. Seized up
i have a question for the bike world lol but I'm 14 and ive never rode a bike before but i really want to i want some suggestions for something with good power and speed but cheap any help? (i own 3 four wheelers currently and have a very need for speed)
Nah this video was from a few days before my crash on the KX. Unfortunately I still have a month or two before I can ride again. I'm healing great and feeling pretty good but not strong enough to ride yet.
Why you shouldn't buy Vforce reeds, they are slightly better BUT they break faster and when they break they will take the engine whit it. Also how is that dudes clutch?
Luckily these are stupid easy to work on. Good luck bud. Most people will argue with me but I lean toward fat and happy fuel mix. I'd rather keep changing plugs every ride than complete rebuilds every month.
Did you find out what happened was it to lean? Nm i see your description I blew up a 1995 kx 125 running it lean ( i was young and miss read the measuring cup for like 2 weeks then poof)
Had this happen to my 100cc Sigma while racing a Yamaha FZ16i, worst feeling ever. Luckily it started again when it cooled down and it's still going strong. Always keep track of your carb settings and watch for any potential air leaks, guys.
When the crank on your KX500 starts going out at the track go back to the truck, put the bike on the stand, hold the throttle WFO until it shuts off. As a bonus sell bike for $300 instead of fixing it then see bike on Craigslist 1 month later for $1100 in tip top shape. Kick self.
holding it wide isn't what blows up a 2 stroke, it's holding it wide, then letting off the throttle without pulling in the clutch or getting on the brakes, even a second of this can blow up a bike... you cut all of your clips off early, but I guarantee you weren't pulling the clutch in when letting off the throttle. When you do this, your bike is running at super high rpm with a lot of force behind it, and is already really hot from the wide open riding, then you let off the throttle and your engine is forced to run at super high rpm while getting no oil (because the throttle is off). you need to be clutching or braking to avoid this.
@@DerekHallman laugh all you want- I've blown up two bikes doing this and learned not too... it's pretty common to know that when riding a 2 stroke at high speeds (on roads or something) you pull in the clutch when you let off the gas.
Yeah it's true I seen them talk about it on forums. Engine braking on a 2-stroke runs very lean with the throttle closed at high RPMs being that there's a lack of fuel /oil mixture
I’ve never had problems engine braking on a 2stroke and I raced them at a national level in NZ for four years. Admittedly not all tracks required heavy engine braking. Also the top ends were rebuilt every 22-30hrs, because those engines never had an easy day

They always run great just until they blow up! Keep track of your hour meter!
the hour meter is useless 60% of the time
I watch all your videos they’re amazing and I’m subscribed
I caught my new top end blowing up. Doing a full top and bottom overhaul as an end of winter project. Glad I'm not the only one broke down haha.
Could be from the "motor braking" its when you slow down in gear without pulling the clutch in you can do it on four strokes but not 2 strokes
Use to run boysen Rad Valve Reeds all the time and they would brake and suck in and tear up piston and cylinder wall. Switched to V-Force 3 and haven't had that problem again but doesn't seem to make the same top engine power at all. More like a mid range power
Had the same thing happen to my yz250 a couple week ago still haven’t got around to fixing it so I just have been riding my yz125 and having even more fun
Well good thing you still have the 250! Nice to see you back out there!!
Nahhhh this was from 2 days before my crash on the KX. Unfortunately I still have a month or two before I can ride again :(
Sounds like you need to rev it more when decelerating from high speeds… 2 strokes need the oil from the fuel mixture to lubricate the top end
That’s what I was about to say
Do you pull the clutch to do that?
They always run amazing right before they blow
we gotta get a rebuild video!!
Those no lift and no clutch shifts 😮❤
only way to do it!
can you do another video on the teardown and rebuild of this so we can learn from it
There's soooooo many of those videos on RUclips.
Yeah it was just the rings
@@DerekHallman nice! You'll be back brappin it up in no time!
how is that caused?dirt from open vforces or just little late engine maintance?
@@yamahajawa7083 the top end was just worn from a lot of hours and I should've replaced it sooner
@@DerekHallman ride it like you stole it! 🤘😎
sounds like an easy top end rebuild kit at least it aint the lower end
yup just top end 👍🏼
Wild nice to see you back bro I was wondering cuz im getting a new bike soon but should I get a 125 2 stroke or a 250 Im still deciding man.
125!! Specifically yz125! Cheapest 125 on the market! Easy and simple bikes.
@@adrianhernandez8131 Ill see if I can find one not many yamahas in my area
Yz250
@@100GTAGUY Thanks I will try to see I know one of my bros has a 125 ive rode it before but not for long I will just have to see if I can find a 250 to sorta compare
ya that sukks dude..hope u didn't do to much damage to the cylinder or anything? what did u find?
hold 'er wide open! How many hours were on the bike when this happened?
Went back to stock. The vforce4r reed petals explode every 15 hours for me.
-Matt’s dad
atleast you gave your word to it before it blews
In that case, what happens to the broken pieces of the Reed valve? Don't they end up inside the motor???
The really high RPMs sounds like a fly Buzzing
What kind of fuel do you use and the oil ratio? I also have v force 4 over 100 hours never had anny issue
I just picked up the boyesen rad valve for my 150sx. Haven't put it on yet and it's winter time rn but maybe ditch those vforce reeds lol. Stock Reed valve with boyesen pedals are also a good reliable option
Yeah I'm probably just gonna run the stockers haha
@Derek Hallman yeah it is cheaper. Im sure performance wise its negligible. Hope your healing up good brotha 🤙
little late to comment but are you sure youre getting the real v-force reeds or are they a cheaper ebay knockoff?
they are the real deal
Props to the delivery driver that looked to be racing yall lol
thank you for your in dept guide
no problem 😎
You can hear the lack of oil in the fuel. When your 2,stroke takes off like a race car. You should check your mixture. You can hear the dry exhaust sound. This was running too lean on oil. Sounds like straight gas with no mixed oil running thru it.
running off straight monster energy no mix
I miss riding so much !
Blowing up a bike sucks. Especially when its catastrophic, I did it to my yz250f back in high school. Whole engine was fucked, but somehow I traded it for a klx110 running and kx100 that needed a rebuild so it wasnt so bad after all.
Check for air leaks at crank seals
Lower case seal , bingo
Did that on my 01exc after some tight single trail (it was hot) I let it cool while gently winding the kicker so it didn't grab the bore and started her back up again once cooled down, it was down on power and I did a topend once I got home and I was sweet
you should come to NZ and ride moto central, easily the best track ive ever ridden
Yeah. Gotta pull the clutch in after a max effort WOT drag, or repeated drags. Keep things lubricated with some throttle blips. Sucks man. I blew up a 125 when I was young, after a fresh top end. Ringing it out through the gears hard, then a long engine braking decel. Seized up
quick top end rebuild and she's ready for more thrashing
That a killer mate, least you didn’t swan dive in to a pond this time😂
everyone remembers the swan dive 😭🤣
Aw no way mate was flying then you lol hope u get it sorted pal 👍
i have a question for the bike world lol but I'm 14 and ive never rode a bike before but i really want to i want some suggestions for something with good power and speed but cheap any help? (i own 3 four wheelers currently and have a very need for speed)
Dam that sux. The carbon flaps are the best. Never had any problems with mine. My stock flaps got eating up at the tips pretty quick .
He’s backkk!!!
Nah this was from few days before my crash on the KX. Unfortunately I still have a month or two before I can ride again :(
IVE DONE THAT 6 TIMES BIKE ENGINE'S LOVE ME
You're back! How are your ribs?
Nah this video was from a few days before my crash on the KX. Unfortunately I still have a month or two before I can ride again. I'm healing great and feeling pretty good but not strong enough to ride yet.
Should do a rebuild vidya!!! Throw in some weisco pistons forged pistons will but up with the high rpm better
They also need to be warmed up like a 4 stroke. Forged pistons expand differently than cast.
Last time I did that I was over 2 miles from my truck and by myself on a Tuesday that was a memorable day took me about two hours to push that thing
Why you shouldn't buy Vforce reeds, they are slightly better BUT they break faster and when they break they will take the engine whit it.
Also how is that dudes clutch?
A blow up.... when internal components exit with catastrophic results. That was a mild sieze. Add a little more Castrol R30
in the netherlands we call this a warmloper
probably a to lean air/fuel ratio or wish oil
There are aftermarket carbon reeds which are better and cheaper then the vforces, I think youll go with them instead
i went boyesen superstock myself. vforce seems like a lot of extra moeny for negligible gain and way more risk.
Luckily these are stupid easy to work on. Good luck bud. Most people will argue with me but I lean toward fat and happy fuel mix. I'd rather keep changing plugs every ride than complete rebuilds every month.
I just replaced my yz125 with those reeds. Wish me luck 😬
😬😬😬
Hey just wondering what fuel & oil ratios were you running?
40:1 motorex and 110 octane
Did you find out what happened was it to lean? Nm i see your description I blew up a 1995 kx 125 running it lean ( i was young and miss read the measuring cup for like 2 weeks then poof)
My top end had 40 hours on it and was on its way out. I should've just replaced it when I swapped the reeds. Oh well!
@@DerekHallman thats a bummer man ill tell you what though you kept that bad boy in the power band the whole time tell it did go. cheers!
I some how wedged the pin clip between the piston and cylinder wall one time
That’s what 2-strokes do ha. Atleast they are super easy to take apart.🤙🏻
Had this happen to my 100cc Sigma while racing a Yamaha FZ16i, worst feeling ever. Luckily it started again when it cooled down and it's still going strong. Always keep track of your carb settings and watch for any potential air leaks, guys.
she was a little too lean for sure!
Indeed@@DerekHallman
Can you show us the damage of the piston or cylinder.
Well what will it be, new coating and a new piston, quick job. Thats why we love 2 strokes, easy to fix
yup that's exactly what it was, pretty cheap fix
Maybe run it a little richer or grab a lectron carb. Love how your riding it like a 2 stroke should be tho. Didnt know that about vforce reeds
The same thing happened to me some years ago with my 125 sx ahah I had luck because I was able to drive back home.
What gearing r u running on the 150
When the crank on your KX500 starts going out at the track go back to the truck, put the bike on the stand, hold the throttle WFO until it shuts off.
When you do this, your bike is running at super high rpm with a lot of force behind it, and is already really hot from the wide open riding, then you let off the throttle and your engine is forced to run at super high rpm while getting no oil (because the throttle is off). you need to be clutching or braking to avoid this.
lol
@@DerekHallman laugh all you want- I've blown up two bikes doing this and learned not too... it's pretty common to know that when riding a 2 stroke at high speeds (on roads or something) you pull in the clutch when you let off the gas.
@@teddyf9438 😂
Yeah it's true I seen them talk about it on forums. Engine braking on a 2-stroke runs very lean with the throttle closed at high RPMs being that there's a lack of fuel /oil mixture
I’ve never had problems engine braking on a 2stroke and I raced them at a national level in NZ for four years. Admittedly not all tracks required heavy engine braking.
Also the top ends were rebuilt every 22-30hrs, because those engines never had an easy day
Can we get a top end rebuild video!?
nice vid, getting a 2 stroke next month
Sounded like it just simply got tired. Nothing shot out of the casing or anything so it shouldn't be that bad.
