As an American, I feel like you should be able to point at our political system and simply say "is that what you want?" Our Supreme Court legalized corporate bribery of politicians and now our presidential races take a year and a half and cost _billions_ of dollars. Do whatever it takes to get the money out of your politics NOW, while you still have a chance to.
Part of the problem is that "the rules" are made up by the politicians themselves - not just for gifts but for other behaviours like lying. There should be an independent body monitoring all mp behaviour including corruption, lying, bullying etc. Parties absolutely should be taxpayer funded - I would rather fund our democracy than the royals, but that might be an unpopular opinion! It would be interesting to see which politicians quit if they can't take bribes anymore.
I love the way you guys talked about Starmers comments on immigration and welfare reform because there are issues with both systems but to spotlight immigration and welfare fraud right now in the context of what's going on in the country is ridiculous
I have long been in favour of public funding for political parties, so yes, I'd happily pay the £2. Whilst I consider myself incorruptible, a 1996/7 match worn Neil Redfearn Barnsley shirt might just be too tempting.
This is a complete non sequitur, but as a non-Brit, is it odd that I find myself pronouncing and thinking of Keir Starmer as a single word? Like Cher or Adele or Madonna? “Keirstarmer”.
If it is not enough that the government is doing the good things that the country needs and showmanship is what is lacking then guess what... talk about it, you be the spokespersons.
They could be braver here? We have, once again, allowed a Tory to be in charge of Labour during a crucial election that the tories were incapable of winning. Starmer told us who he was and we didn’t believe him
Socialism requires a big interventionist state machinery. End of. You cannot be for socialism and against a big state. That said the right is often in favour of a big state with the explicit aim of controlling the poor and funding the military... so its not exclusive in either direction 😂
From across the pond - well 1.5 ponds as I’m in Hawaii - I’ve followed your show from the beginning and always enjoy the light moments you inject. Although I can’t always understand the specifics of your comments, such as names of districts or politicians, there are so many common themes our two societies are struggling with. I especially liked that your second guest’s familiarity with US politics allowed him to throw in snarky asides. Loved that convo❤
A bag of Jelly Babies will easily get five minutes in a room with me. If you have a trade and are willing to do my kitchen for free (I’ll pay for materials) you can get an amendment made to a law
Starmer may have called for "the return of the sausages," but there's a long list of Israeli politicians and journalists who've mixed up hatifim (snacks) & hatufim (abductees).
I'm still uncertain as to how strongly I feel about the gifts Starmer has received. It's the line about him having received more than any other MP since 2019. Firstly, that doesn't feel far enough away that it sounds as significant as the reporting has made this. Secondly, this is comparative to other MPs. What it does not take into account is any gifts that may have been received by government ministers of PM's, as apparently that is not something that is stated in government transparency data. Considering we've had 14 years of Tory government, that feels like a lot of missing information that could help give a sense of how significant these gifts to Starmer have been. I remember hearing stories about how more gifts from foreign state visitors to Johnson had to be taken off of him by the Cabinet Office (I believe he could take them when he left office) than any previous PM. There was also the issue of that 'loan' he received from the man he then placed at the head of the BBC. Not at all trying to defend the gifts. I'm just not sure yet how to feel about them and I'm slightly resistant to all the headlines I've seen recently that seem to want this to be a huge issue when I remember the ambivalence some of these publications had about evidence of more worrying corruption during the Tory governments.
I keep it very simple. It was wrong for the Tories to do, it’s wrong for Labour to do it. What we do need though is better reporting and questioning on the impact of those bribes. Was Labour’s acceptance of the £11m donation from oil companies before the election the reason they backtracked on their green policies? Was JustEat’s donation of tickets to the Uk Kebab Championships related to Labour not pushing ahead with reforms to worker’s rights that benefit JustEat’s delivery drivers.
Yeah, I really don't care whether they were declared or not, they're bribes, end of. The famous wallpaper was declared too.. Also, the argument "he needs it for his job" is insane to me. Things which you need for your job you can claim on expenses. If you (rightfully) feel you can't claim 100k in clothes on expenses, you can't use the argument you *need* it, now can you?
Labor in Australia are suffering the disease. Running to appease the right, when they have such a majority, they could easily push forward progressive change. And as result, Labor are having their lowest approval ratings since election, with a year out from election.
OK, I kinda thought the moment where I realised "Yeah, Starmer isn't THAT much better than the Tories" would have come at a later date, but the benefits stuff especially was a real kick in the teeth. Yes, Starmer is better than the Tory leaders that came before him, but the bar is so low that it might as well be on the bloody floor! This is why I'm glad I put my chips behind the Lib Dems.
100% agree with Nish on immigration. That was an opportunity to radically change the discourse on immigration. And instead they're just capitulating to the shitty toxic discourse politicans have loved for decades to hide their own incompetence 😠
I'm not sure I could be bribed, but if anyone wants to test that and make me an offer I might not refuse, go right ahead and transfer the cash to my account.
I’m really gutted the winter fuel payment has been taken away from my Mum. Now she won’t pass it on to me, someone who is mortgage free and can easily pay fuel bills without support.
The fact that your Mum may not need the benefit is irrelevant. There are millions of pensioners who do fall just above the already stingy qualification level for pension credits and will feel the effects of this policy.
Don't be assholes to handicapped that has light sensitivity. It's a real thing. I have a problem being out and about when the sunshine, I live most of my life at night just because I can't fucking take sunlight.
Hmmm… I’m not sure the rich and powerful of this country needed any influence from outside, be it Russia or Egypt, to exploit loopholes and look out for themselves. Also, I would suggest that Churchill is hardly a great example of “Public Servant”. Completely expected a relatively luxury life to be state funded, did he not?

For the love of Dog!

You say men in suits.
I say men giving and receiving bribes.
Now that's factually backed up by centuries of evidence.
it is not starver's party. it is his handlers' money ppl's party. he is a weak man. bought in exchange for PM
There was a per-vote subsidy in Canada for political parties for a few years, but when the richest party got a majority they eliminated it.
This is a complete non sequitur, but as a non-Brit, is it odd that I find myself pronouncing and thinking of Keir Starmer as a single word? Like Cher or Adele or Madonna? “Keirstarmer”.
Having two umlauts in your name is quite metal.
Only one of them is an actual umlaut :) the ë is a diaeresis
@@kali1866 you need to drink lots of fluids to avoid dehydration when that happens

Nearer £4-£5 a person I think when you take out kids, and only think about tax payers. But I'm still up for it.
As a Pensioner I am totally up for it and would happily give £5 a year, even a tenner to stop this donation corruption.
They could be braver here? We have, once again, allowed a Tory to be in charge of Labour during a crucial election that the tories were incapable of winning. Starmer told us who he was and we didn’t believe him
Treasury reconsidering Labour plan for non-dom tax status, here we go just the poor to lose it's a club for the 1% by the 1% this man has to go ASP.
Left wing doesn’t mean statist. Left wing means equal rights, right wing means that there are people who deserve to be in charge

Just wanted to thanks to Pod Save the UK for your work. Some great discussions in this episode.
Anxiously awaiting the “Fair Trade Do Gooder” merch 🤣
It happened briefly under Corbyn but.... Mumble mumble

Another great show.
How was the Conference,Zoe ?
......" Ummm...Corporate "
Starmer is on thin ice and it's his own doing.
Starmer may have called for "the return of the sausages," but there's a long list of Israeli politicians and journalists who've mixed up hatifim (snacks) & hatufim (abductees).

Frank Hester has been awarded contracts by the NHS in excess of £135 million. So nothing dodgy going on here, move along, move along.
Sunlight is the best disinfectant. Not transparency.
What do you think sunlight means in that metaphor if not transparency?

I think garm drama sounds good.
Your guest is very insightful and well spoken but can I add; I did a double take, she looks so much like Millie Bobby Brown 😅

Zoe, I hope you have had that spot on your beautiful neck checked out by a doctor.
we should pay mps more to attract the best people to do the job not the richest idiots to do the job
