Faceting a gemstone-cutting YAG

- This video shows the steps in cutting and polishing a faceted gemstone. Im cutting YAG in this video. Yittrum Aluminum Garnet.
The critical angle of YAG is 33 degrees. YAG cuts like natural garnet, with polishing being performed with alumina or diamond (50,000 or 100,000 grit) on common polishing laps. YAG has low heat sensitivity. Production for the gem trade decreased after the introduction of synthetic cubic zirconia; as of 1995 there was little production.
Hardness: 8.5
Specific Gravity: 4.55 - 4.60; may vary with dopants used.
Cleavage / Fracture: None / Conchoidal fracture
Refractive Index / Birefringence: 1.833
Dispersion: 0.028
Wonderfully informative! Thank you so much! Stone turned out beautifully!
Thanks very much, this beautiful amethyst was great to cut and polish.
I love all the new stones your channel introduces me to. Many of these I hadn't heard of until now.
Thanks for watching, i too enjoy aquiring new material to cut.
Сиреневое утро.... Как последний выдох ночи.... Брэд! Это очень красиво!!!!
благодарю вас
Beautiful work, thanks for posting these "how it's done" videos they're inspiring!
Thanks very much.
I really like the cut design on the YAG
I like it too chuck, its called a reverse brilliant by the faceter/ designer.
A cada lapidação nova que admiro, fico mais impressionado com a beleza da gema. Obrigado por está oportunidade. Parabéns...🤩🤩🤩

Very fascinating i learn so much thanks for sharing..love it ..😊😊😊😊😍😍😍
Thank you.
Nice work and nice design - I really like the color of this YAG.
Thanks john, it is really nice material to work with.
Nice cut
Thanks
absolutely stunning
Thank you YAG ( yittrium aluminum garnet) really makes a nice gemstone, its very durable too.
I'm glad to see your content.
Thank you.
Truly stunning, nice work.... Turns out those laser rods aren't so cheap either
thanks, yes they arent .
Fascinating
Hi great video. I watched it twice. I am trying to fabricate and polish some small flat discs of yag for a medical application. What is the mount epoxy you use? How do you unmount the crystal from the epoxy? thanks for your help.
Another fine video and cut, Brent. That gem certainly displays a lot of scintillation and fire.
Since you couldn't reveal the design, it appears that it might be a difficult one to mount. Perhaps I'm mistaken.
thanks john, yes yag is beautiful. I cut some a long time back, it was a clear piece and very small. I dont think ill ever mount this one .
Beaitiful work, 👏👏👏
Itès so brilliant! It reminds me of Tanzanite
Hey thanks man for posting such straight forward material, I'm new to the world of gemstones and this video was exactly what I hoped to find and more, so much good info. That's a cool setup you got there, do you have any videos on how to build your own gem polishing station?
Hi, thanks very much, im glad it helps out.. No i have never built my own equiptment but i have seen some videos of people doing it here on youtube.
Wawoo beautiful
Parabéns fico muito linda, quero aprender a lapidar uma assim numa ametista de coloração mais clara do que as roxas
Nice
Great work sir
Interested in cutting some large pieces? I’ve got a plum sized piece from lasing rod. Mine is a bit more fuchsia. Beautiful work.
Sorry, im not going cut anyone elses gemstones anymore, whenever i have done that it never ended well.
@@tennpikr74 I respect that and your work!
Hi Brent, great video. Can you tell me please, is the polishing lap your using a ceramic lap? Thank you.
Hello, no i used a lightning lap aluminum oxide polishing lap. Thanks for watching.
Show 👏👏👏
Hi Brent new here and here to learn so thank you for sharing with us. YAG is new to us as well. wow it is already beginning to take such shape with the lower facets defined before you start the crown.
Question it is about the epoxy and transfer here how do you go from the lower to the crown and know thy are going to be be in line to one another it is in that holder you did it in where the epoxy drys over night or do you pick up the dimensions from the exposed girdle?
Thank you for sharing how you do this precision work, the YAG stone looks really deep and nice, best shared on camera outdoors.
Lance & Patrick.
Hello and thanks for watching and commenting. The facetron machine has what is called keyed dopsticks, meaning they can only go into the quill of the machine one way. There is a flat area machined onto each dopstick. When i transfer the stone from the dopstick i start with to the cone dop with the cavity, the transfer jig aligns the 2 dopsticks , therefore the facets on the pavillion will be aligned with the facets being cut on the crown.
If a machine does not use keyed dopsticks the alignment must be done as the stone is reinserted into the quill and a girdle facet can be used to line up the crown facets, or if a faceted girdle is not exist, a mark can be made on the stone identifying the pavillion main facet . There are other alignment devices also being produced to accomplish this alignment. If the facets are not properly aligned , brilliance can be greatly affected.
@@tennpikr74 We learned this from you thank you so much it makes great sense and we can best watch you going forward, we subscribed, see you in your next video. L&P.
Невероятно красиво!
Большое спасибо и спасибо за просмотр.
Super linda muito bom trabalho 👍 parabéns
obrigado
I want to begin shaping gemstones. I’m currently finding roughs that are enticing my desire to follow something further. Please help me. How do I begin this profession?
If you live in the USA, most cities have a club where you can learn and use their machines as a member. If you live where this is not available, you can learn a lot from these youtube videos and there are groups on facebook that will help you learn also.
The best! Aluminium oxide disk or powder? If powder which grit of disk? Thanks!
For cutting facets or polishing?

💎👍👍👍👍
Are there any other types of lapidary stock sold in rod form like this?? such a convenient shape for cutting
I have not seen any other materials , but i guess there could be .

Muito bom tkts to show
Whats the price of that equipment and where can I get it? thank you
These cost around $3600 USD.

@@tennpikr74 thank you very much :)
how do you remove the epoxy from the stone after ?
I use the heat from the flame of an alcohol lamp .
This causes the glue to deteriorate. On heat sensitive stones , this can not be done. Then i would soak the stone and dop for a day or so in acetone which releases the bond.
@@tennpikr74 thank you ! Great work by the way ! ;)
I've seen this exact machine used in multiple videos but I can't the model name online and the similar machines I see are chinese and don't have that needle guage on it and I don't trust the product. Could you tell me the name and brand of the machine you are using?
The machine i was using in this video is called a facetron faceting machine. These are made in the USA. Here is their website:
www.facetron.com.
@@tennpikr74 Thank you. What is the main selling point for that model? It says $3,4500. While the one on amazon is $345.00. Big difference. I notice the lack of the dial indicator stop on the cheap chinese amazon model. I'm asking because I am looking to get started into this trade and maybe the cheaper one is better for practice but without that indicator stop I'm not sure how to tell how deep I have cut the stone. Any Idea how that is accomplised withou the indicator showing me when to stop?
@@The_Conqueeftador Actually you learn to cut the facets by sight and ear, hearing when the cutting is slowing down and using your eyes to see the cutting progress. You do not need any fancy gauge to cut a precison gem. The gauge just makes it easier to know when you are approaching the stopping point. The difference in the chinese machines and american is the precise machining of the parts and exacting tolerances that provide very accurate cutting and being able to repeat the same facets during the cutting and polishing sequence. The chinese machines you see for $350.00 lack the quality control, exacting tolerances, quality materials.
I have read accounts of skilled faceters who bought them and were very disappointed and could not cut a decent stone.
I think it would be better for you to buy a better quality machine to start with. Their is a asian machine that is a copy of the facetron which might be a good machine.

@@tennpikr74 Thank you again for the insight. Good to hear about the sound trick. I don't think I've seen a video yet mention that. I'll take a look at that other machine. I'm deff turned off those machines now. Thank you again.
@@The_Conqueeftador Did you ever get the machine?
4:12 what is the best cerium oxide or aluminum oxide
It depends on the stone species as to what polish to use. The softer stones say 7 mohs hardness and under are best with cerium oxide, the harder stones above 7 mohs would be better polished with aluminum oxide or diamond. Actually there are other polished besides cerium that might work better such as chrome oxide, tin oxide, zirconium oxide, but cerium ox. is mainly what i use on the softer gems.
@@tennpikr74 thank you so much sir
what are all the angles of diamond facets?
Im not sure since im not able to cut diamonds on my machines. I would think the pavillion mains would be around 37 degrees while the crown around 40 degrees.
