One of the most beautiful movies ever made. So graceful, so dynamic. Great story, Incredible score. I saw it in the cinema when it first came out. It overtook me completely. Could not get it out of my head. Only bad thing is hpw much it has ruined other movies for me :D

Rumor is that Michelle yeah tore her ACL during that first fight scene that you don’t see many full body shots of her during the 2nd fight between her and Zheng Ziyi due to her lack of mobility.
Yet Ang Lee was able to make that 2nd fight even more bad ass

I enjoyed this video, however, i found it odd that you guys didnt touch on how each character was trying to influence jen on a different path.
The whole movie shes getting pulled in so many different directions which seems to be the main reason she acts out to begin with.
I feel like this also is the main reason of her leaving everything at the end, whether she commited suicide or not.

Great observation I agree. This Film has so many wonderful things to talk about it’s hard to cover them all.

the movie should've won the Best Picture Oscar that year...instead of the snooze fest Gladiator.
It should've been the first ever non-english language/foreign Best Picture..way before Parasite.
The film's such an iconic cinematic achievement.

This is exactly the type of review show I've always wanted: goes into detail breaking down some of the incredible filmmaking aspects of these classic and relating them to the picture at large about how it contributes to the story and what it's all trying to say. Can't wait to watch more!

Totally understand why some people from Western culture would laugh about the floating thing. Kinda like you either fly or you don't.
But to be honest this floating thing is truly one of the most important tropes in Chinese Martial art history. It's called "輕功" and can be translated to "The ability to make yourself lighter." It is a representation of showing how a person masters the use of "Chi", for anime fans, you can also see it as the Chinese version of Chakra in Naruto. It is not a "superpower" that only mutants or superheroes can wield but a way that shows the level of mastery of Chinese martial art.
btw, I recommend you guys to check out Ang Lee's "Eat Drink Man Woman" really represents a down to earth lifestyle of early Taiwan and appreciates the culture of "eating" in Chinese and Taiwanese culture.

It's not "also a love story too." It's primarily a love story, with martial arts working in service of that story.

excellent discussion. everything i loved about this movie, you touched on.
this was the best picture of the it was released, notwithstanding what the Academy voted for. and i have a lot to say about THAT.

Thank you for the great review. This film is overwhelming. It captures both the Chinese and the western audience on so many different levels. The restaurant scene where she verbally ridicules the warriors is actually only really funny if you understand the Chinese word plays that she made and they can not be translated. However, even without that, you can enjoy it on so many other levels.

Excellent review, gentlemen! Just saw it in the theater today as they have released it as part of AMC theaters fan favorites. Glad I saw it again 23 years later. Just wanted to comment that Jade Fox may not have learned all the skills from the manual she stole because she was not as well ready as Jen. And we know that Jen has excellent calligraphy because she's born an aristocrat. Jade Fox may be her governess but was probably more like a nanny.
