In my opinion when people speak of Hermes craftsmanship and quality they aren’t concerned with quality or craftsmanship per say but with brand, and status that comes with Hermes. I say this because when you put another brand beside Hermes that matches quality and craftsmanship they say that it’s too much to pay for the other brand but they will gladly strive to pay birkin and Kelly prices plus the items Hermes forces you to buy to be able to obtain a bag. I see it in the comments on RUclips and social media people sneering at Moynat and loro piana prices saying it’s not worth the price yet they sing praises to Hermes as if they are the only one’s with quality and craftsmanship that can demand top prices🙄if people were truly after a quality and craftsmanship products they would consider other brands and even bespoke artisans but they don’t.
Hear, hear! It’s all about the status with Hermès. I think it boils down to educating but it will take time. What do you think? I would buy Moynat any day to Hermès.
I agree, though I fear that when people start talking about these under the radar brands, they will become “the new Hermes” and will charge higher prices due to their higher brand equity.
Moynat like LV, are trunkmakers in origin. Hermes couldn’t manufacture trunks - they tried in the past but failed to reach success. If I want leather boxes aka trunks, Moynat, LV or Goyard would be the choice over any others.
I also follow Tanner Leatherstein and appreciate his frank analysis. My only issue with his analysis are his pricing of the leathers from high end brands. I'm a handbag designer working with a small artisan shop. My top of the line full grain leathers are priced between $20-30 per square feet material ONLY. I just cannot believe that he can price supposed high-end leathers at $2 per square feet. I cannot even get a very decent leather below $8.00/per SF. It doesn't help us small shops to justify the 'higher' price points of our products.
I hear you I wonder how he is doing it. I’m going to talk to a couple of the Hermès / Haas tanneries and get prices and I’ll come back to you. Maybe his prices are mid range tanneries. Who knows!
I have truly learned so much from your videos. Please keep sharing your knowledge. I am currently visiting Paris and picked up a Moynat Flori and a Joseph Duclos tote. The service was perfection and I love the items. I would not have considered them had I not been binge watching your channel over the past the few weeks because the points you discuss inspired me to consider additional factors. Thank you so much!
I do appreciate the craftmanship of brands that are handmade, becuase I sew. The utility and functionality of my Kelly 25 is lacking when I compare it to my Evelyene. The resale value of an Hermes bag is unbeatable!
Dear Anesu, this is a great video, well done. You know where I stand with this and what I buy. I have very few pieces from Hermes, classic boots..not that comfortable, a few beautiful silk scarfs that I really enjoy, and two belts that, frankly, I feel a bit ashamed wearing with the H in front. That is were I stop. There is no way on earth that I will degrade myself to the knees of Hermes to try to buy a bag, no matter how much I love the shape, leather or craftsmanship.Sorry, but I will go to any other boutique that welcomes me, that allows me to choose the bag that I want, the color ,shape and forms. A boutique that will follow me at my pace and time and be there for me when I need them. That is what I expect when I buy luxury items.
Ha! I chuckled loudly after reading your comment! I enjoy my Hermès silk scarves too, debating whether to buy another belt but i doubt I’ll pull the trigger I have the H front belt which I don’t wear anymore. I feel embarrassed to now it’s sooo showy. The games and hype are not worth it! Sesia over a birkin any day!
I totally agree. I want to be wanted and valued as a customer, just as I appreciate buying the pieces and respect them, we deserve the same as customers.
Good evening Anesu, I just saw your video and I totally agree with what you said about Hermès; maybe I should have added one word in my comment…that ‘of course Hermès is ‘CONSIDERED’ the top brand’ . I did not feel ‘attacked’ in any possible way because I already stated that I personally preferred the other brands that I mentioned. To be honest I don’t own a Birkin or a Kelly because the prices are too high in my opinion and the Birkin is not very userfriendly to me. Actually after have seen some of your videos, I have bought a Delvaux, a Moreau Paris and a Pourchet bag 🤗 The Delvaux is of outstanding quality 👌, the Moreau Paris is of very good quality but more of an everyday but special bag to me; but the Pourchet (Anjou) bag was really a very pleasant surprise to me 😃 It only cost me €215 but the quality and the craftsmanship is as good as the Moreau, and it came in a luxurious box with a black ribbon around it and a slightly perfumed card, as if I had bought a very expensive top brand bag! But the most important thing is the look and the quality of the bag of course, and that is excellent. So thank you very much Anesu that by watching your videos I got to know these beautiful brands and their very well made bags 🤗❤️
Most people are just paying for marketing and branding, but they don't want to hear it though. I think Delvaux's Lingot and Tempeste are absolutely beautiful bags and even look better than the Hermes Kelly and Constance.
I’m not sure it’s entirely a case of not wanting to hear it or maybe not being aware to begin with or you have others who are okay with it? It’s a mix I think. Hear, hear both stunning bags.
Hi, I totally agree with you! The thing with Hermes and buying one of their iconic bags on 2nd hand or in store, it’s the ability to resell it in case of need, and you will probably get your money back, and it’s quite a liquid market
The resale value argument also gets me every time. If someone can shell out 10k-12k on a bag from the store or go on the resale market and shell out 15k-30k+ on a bag for the hypothetical case of if in need I’m also sure someone can invest that same money into to something more concrete that would probably yield them more money and they wont have to worry about being in need because they set your finances on stable ground not a handbag that fluctuates with what’s currently hot. The reasons given have holes plus no one talks about the fees to resell and that not all Hermes bags even the Kelly and birkin increase in price. It depends on type, size, color and demand.

*Interested in the same quality leather but want better craftsmanship at a fraction of the price* Yes! YES! yes! In fact, that should be my 1st, middle, and Sir/Last name! For me, the best fashion or things to own in general are things with exceptional quality that look amazing, wear properly, and don't cost an arm and a leg. The if you know, you know brands ... the many haven't even heard of them, but when they see you rocking it, they know it has to be something special! 😉 Can't say this enough. I absolutely appreciate your content, love it!
Thank you so much for all your insights! Your knowledge and depth on luxury topics is really rare on this platform. Related to this discussion of Hermes, do you know of other brands that have similar craftsmanship and quality in their smaller leather pieces, especially leather jewelry and bracelets? Not sure why, but Hermes seems like one of the few brands that really focuses on quality in this range - I haven’t seen any other brand that comes close in terms of their quality. Even brands that make exceptional handbags and larger leather pieces have had very mediocre leather jewelry options. Same goes for fine jewelry brands; they may do well with precious metals but often they are quite disappointing with their leather quality.
You are welcome. Always encouraging to hear positive feedback. The first brand that comes to mind is Joseph Duclos and the second I’ll let you know once I’ve seen their stuff with my own eyes! But I’m hopeful. I’m going back to Paris to see a few brands including Joseph Duclos again as I would like to see their other products like jewellery and I’ll talk about it thereafter. Please bare with me.
The most depressing thing - my Hermes bags if I choose to sell them, their resale values are better performing than my shares. My limited ed. Hermes bag can be sold for triple. Hermes is the top profitable bag. The good thing about Hermes - they can restore their own bags. Other brands don’t bother to repair after a few years. Try reselling the other brands (not the popular limited editions) - you won’t get as high as a Hermes, in fact you may incur a loss.
An additional point: I do get offered bags by Hermes sometimes. While some may be generous enough to accept their quota bag of choice in any leather, I am not. My big No-No Hermes leathers are box, epsom, clemence and swift. Other brands don’t allow me to be picky about non-exotic leathers.
Yup. I find ppl write off Hermes as ‘not so great’ in leather quality but they forget that Hermes has various leather types , a vast choice compared to other brands. Some extremely durable like Togo and myzore (goatskin), and some, like box (smoothed calf) , are prone to scratches. Epsom is prone to bending stress. My Vache Liegee (a discontinued Hermes leather but very thick) Kelly, inherited from my mother is 20 years old and patina-ed very well. Still catches the attention of ppl who are surprised that it is so old yet never been to a Hermes bag spa.
@@SoAnesu Heh, other RUclips channels have such commenters. Maybe because some got the wrong leather for usage. Why I wouldn’t touch box leather is because that leather needs babying aka tender loving care. You can throw around a Togo but box leather …that’s asking for massive scratches.

Maybe they scale their prices? Maybe they're placing bulk orders.
@therightkindofpen I definitely think that’s the case as they are ordering fairly sizeable quantities of the leathers.
