    Dalmatians are related to hounds of the pointer type. They were used as hounds and to accompany horse-drawn coaches before they got into fire-fighting.
    The main qualification, that granted them the job was, that they could neither be overlooked nor overheard: Their colouring and their ability to run away really fast in front of the horses and bark loudly all the way made them an ideal add-on to the hand-operated siren the firemen were using.
    Dalmatians essentially barked pedestrians out of the way and served as an audio-visual signal that the fire-fighters were coming. This gave people slightly more time to clear the street - because once they saw the horses and had located exactly where the siren sound was coming from (often problematic due to it echoing off stone buildings in cities), it could be too late to move.

    Dalmatians are actually a very old breed! pictures of spotted dogs like them have even been seen in Egyptian art. the more modern breed was used as a carriage dog which led to them having the job with the firefighters. they have the speed and stamina to go for miles beside a horse drawn carriage, and they not only got pedestrians out of the way but also were used to guard the carriages themselves once they stopped. people don't view them as guard dogs, but that's exactly what they are - smart, stubborn, athletic, playful and highly energetic ones!

    • @bernadettecartin
      @bernadettecartin Год назад +1

      I was looking for this comment. Yes, being a carriage dog led to the firefighter job. I personally don't like them, having known three in my lifetime, every one of which was mean and untrustworthy in that they would try to sneak up on you and attack you even after their owners had ordered them not to. They'd have to be put away for safety because they were so hardheaded. Also I had read it was their job to fight off dogs that would run at and harass the carriage horses. Very athletic and not to be trifled with.

    I had also heard that they were chosen as firefighter dogs bc the breed has a higher than average incidence of deafness (like white cats, trying to breed for some recessive phenotypes comes with drawbacks/ side effects), which made them ideal for the loud siren wailing. Would have to verify that but it would be neat if that was also a reason.

    • @B2WM
      @B2WM Год назад +3

      Can confirm that mostly white dogs do tend towards congenital deafness... And loud Bois and Gorls tend towards deafening their parents. My great aunt had purebreds who were very protective of momma and shy around strangers, since not all of the dogs had full hearing. Mine is mixed with plenty of melanin around her ears, but I started her on hand signs early since her mix is probably mostly foxhound or other loud and aggressively friendly breed. @professorbutters Год назад

      I think we got it from the UK (101 Dalmatians was by a British author and Disney set it in Britain). They make fantastic carriage dogs in addition to what they were originally bred for. If the incredibly flashy and cool dogs make good firehouse mascots and encourage kids with fire safety, well, that’s just one more example of a breed evolving to a different use for humans. Even the littlest spaniels, like Cavs, were still a spaniel and a hunting dog. Poodles weren’t originally intended to show off extreme grooming. And some breeds of dogs, like turnspits, just went extinct because we didn’t need them to do that job anymore.

    Well the higher rank of the Angel, they look more human-like.
    Seraphs and are the ones that look like massive rings with eyes, four-faced creature with wings in every direction etc.

    I always thought that Dalmatians became the fire fighter's mascot because they look like they are spotted with soot. I never knew anything about them being good with horses.

    Ah yes, Dalmatia.
    I've, had a few relatives who lived there.
    Simply put, South Croatia.
    Just stringing along the coast. It's basically city from city along the seaside.
    Super duper popular with tourists from Asia lately, has been through quite big reformations too, to accommodate people coming for the vacation, etc etc.
    Although, Croatia, or any other Balkan state, I'm not sure if I fully recommend if you are constantly polite about everything.
    These places are more than fine, however the areas not crowded by tourists (around a third of Croatia's entire economy resides in tourism), you may find some people that are more 'traditional'.
    If you are a certain type of person, hanging around them can get quite entertaining. However if they don't like you, they don't like you.
    As long as you aren't stuck living with them, it should probably, probably, be tolerable for a while.
    But no, don't get the wrong impression because of that.
    Croatia isn't homogeneous anymore for a starter, but cases like these, you definitely won't find if you are there just as a tourist.
    A week, a month, four months.
    You should be just fine, as Croatia is a place with rich culture and tradition, and also indeed, absolutely marvelous sights to see.
    Oh, the views, the views!
    From forests to islands that you can drive in between on speedboats, to delicious ice creams, and that moment when the sunlight over there hits your face along with the fresh air... yes.
    But despite that all, the beaches are beyond beautiful. (Sorry Bosnia.)
    All in all. If you understand the balkans, you'll get it, and experience things your own way. An hilariously interesting way, that's for sure.
    If you don't, you'll have fun, you'll have a great time, and you will walk off with a new life experience, that you have hopefully enjoyed.
    It is all in all, a nice place to visit.

    We grew up with a Dalmatian. The perfect dog for us. We were all hyper so she fit right in. Because they are hyper, and you are a very active person this is the dog for you. Freckles lived to be 18 years old. Another fun fact our dog was not black/white. She was liver/white. We thought she was beautiful.
