  • It's about space, outlaws, and believe it or not, it predates Firefly.
    I'm aware this one took awhile, but the whole fiasco of almost having my channel deleted by youtube took up some time. Apologies.
    Next review will be on a sci-fi anime.

    Shadow, this anime was made in the 90s. What did you expect? Of course it was going to be silly, that is part of the charm. It may not be perfect, but compared to the vast majority of anime titles today, it is a gem.

    Joss Whedon never admitted to having been inspired by Outlaw Star and stated that any similarities were just a coincidence. Yea... I love Whedon's work, but that's really suspicious.

    Oh God. You almost got your channel deleted?! That's terrible. Sorry you had to go through that ,but I'm glad it all worked out. It's still ridiculous you seem to be such a target of RUclips's copyright garbage. Do companies not realize they are literally getting free advertising? I don't know how many times I've seen a review of an anime and thought it looked like something I'd enjoy and watched it. Many of those times were from your channel. Anyway, this was another enjoyable review of yours. I'll be looking forward to more content from you when you are able to upload next.

    Great review and I agree with a lot of your points about it, but if I recall correctly, the wooden sword is explained in the show at one point (might have been during one of the info dumps at the start of an episode) as being carved from an especially strong wood and having been sharpened with acid to a mono-molecular edge - which basically means that it can cut through any physical object and they made it from wood so it would be undetectable by metal detectors, making it perfect for an assassin. Again, it's only mentioned once (and possibly during a pre-episode info dump) so I'm not surprised you missed it (more surprised I remember it myself tbh), but I thought I'd bring it up as well as point out the fact that based on what we know of science today, it be better to make it out of some kind of advanced plastic or polymer or something along those lines. Again, great review love this show and keep up the good work!

    I blind bought Outlaw Star on a whim and it was worth it, and I agree it's cheesy but a fun watch. Also the notion of old vs new anime is pretty pointless to me they'res great anime in both categories so why argue which one has the better titles.

    I too tend to glorify 90s anime, Since it was my gateway to the medium of Japanese Animation.
    However, I still think that modern Day Anime is just as good(with a few exceptions)
    HELL! Anime is currently, the only modern day Animated Medium that(for the most part) doesn't pander to its audience, or treat the viewers like idiots, as most modern day Animated shows tend to do(I'm looking at you Teen Titans Go!)

    I just looked at your Facebook, and OMG! I didn't check in a while I didn't know this was such a huge thing. Also it wasn't even copyright this time, but supposedly inappropriate content because of the Henti reviews when you don't show any of the sexual content in there. That's insane. RUclips's guidelines have gotten so ridiculous, especially considering they aren't even fair across the board. Just look at some of the music videos on Youtbe. Maybe they aren't literally having sex, but some can be extremely sexual and provocative, but that's okay because those are attached to major companies. I've heard a story about small RUclipsrs who were twirking in videos getting taken down when it's fine for them to have that kind of content. Things have gotten a bit better as far as RUclips issues go, but they still just keep digging themselves in deeper and deeper and are making themselves really user unfriendly. It's great it eventually got resolved and you got your channel back ,but it's ridiculous you had to go through that.

    Ever heard of Key the Metal Idol? Its an 90's anime about a stoic girl who believes herself to be a robot wanting to make over 30,000 friends in hopes of becoming human. It's also psychologically dark and has some really nice music, even the dub versions (In fact I prefer the English OP theme to the Japanese version).

      Its just different taste, different times, different interests i hate how newbies shit on older stuff because they just dont get it... its not just rose colored glasses either what we wanted out of anime then was just different. Anime now and 20 years ago is so different even culturally. I get why why newer generation fans might not like older work and vice versa. I sit somewhere in the middle and i feel like both sides end up rejecting the other despite the fact that great anime exists on both ends.

  • @darkruler50
    @darkruler50 6 лет назад

    hey Shadow, i always enjoy your reviews even if at times i disagree with somethings. regarding 90's animes, i believe the reason they are so overhyped it's because 90's people like me have great fondness of them and the main reason for that is that they were very simple. for example Doraemon was the first anime i was ever introduced to, even if at the time i didn't know what an anime was, and it was pretty simple and i found it rather enjoyable. other animes like dragon ball z, rurouni kenshin, pokemon, digimon and yugioh to name a few were pretty much just about showing likeable characters going on adventures and fighting villains. i loved those kind of anime and to some extent i still kind of do. completely stopped watching Pokemon although i still play the games. it gets tiring to see both main character and villains keep failing miserably. Digimon i still like and i always thought it was a much better anime than Pokemon although when it comes to games there is no comparison. i loved the original Yugioh, tolerated Yugioh gx and everything after was shit. currently anime are much more complex, which is not a bad thing at all but i believe people really like ro remember those times

      Same. I really enjoy that series, and I know he does too. I actually first decided to check it out after hearing him talk about it on his countdown videos. Now it's one of my favorite series ,and I'm even an up to date manga reader. The only thing that makes this difficult is all the installments there currently are. Not only do we have a Full Metal Alchemist situation where there are two versions of the story with one being anime original after a certain point and the other one staying true to the manga and picking up where the original adaptation first deviated with the "Book of" series, but there will likely be more adaptations in the future with it's popularity. Not to mention the series is still on going, which means if they were eventually going to adapt everything, we don't know how many more adaptations there will be. Plus two out of the three current "Book of" adaptations out there which are all very relevant to the plot and build upon each other are in non series form with "Murder" being a two part ova and "Atlantic" being a movie, which makes it more likely they may fall under his radar, as well as the fact that he tends to not review anything that's not a regular series, though there have been exceptions where he has reviewed ovas and movies, especially with this being a case of them all being plot relevant and building upon each other. At this point, I think it would be best to review each installment separately. You could combine season 1 and 2, but not only can the ending of season 1 stand on its own, enough things were done differently in season two where combining them in one review would be a bit difficult. It may be best to just do every installment separately if he ever decides to do reviews on this franchise. Maybe he could do what he is doing for the .hack franchise right now.

    I think your saying of today people bashing on an anime even when it's good in my opinion sums up what Fairy Tail is going through. You mind reviewing that show?

  • @georgespiggott5615
    @georgespiggott5615 6 лет назад

    Honestly I think that a lot of the reason why older anime are upheld as awesome while being underwhelming compared to modern stuff is that they're the building blocks on which the industry and tropes were built. I think that the character designs and anatomy are a lot better, too, because they weren't trying be "moe" or whatever. So it's understandable that retro fans get so frustrated with new stuff because most of it isn't anywhere near as original as their fans believe. The only retro show that I think is BETTER than the stuff it inspired is Utena, which was a dark deconstruction of magical girls that came out only a little while after the genre was created. Madoka Magica barely counts as a deconstruction, bc Urobuchi admitted to getting most of his exposure to magical girls from eroge, whereas Utena knew exactly what concepts and tropes it was inverting, examining, or defying.

    How could anyone don't like Cowboy Bebop & Trigun? Gosh

    • @moonstonepearl21
      @moonstonepearl21 6 лет назад +1

      I've never seen cowboy Bebop, but I wasn't a major fan of Trigun when I saw it. There were some things I really liked about it, but the story felt so incomplete. I don't know whether it cut out a lot from the source material, but it teased a lot of interesting concepts that it never delivered on completely explaining or explaining at all. Many things were not properly explained, including what the main character actually was. The last part of the series also felt really rushed, and that's when I thought they were possibly rushing through the source material. The finale used up a bunch of time taking us out of the action to recap things we already saw in the series. It's been a while since I watched it, so I don't remember all of the details, but the ending was a bit unsatisfying to me do you know if the manga goes into more details and fixes some of the things I have issues with?

    • @danrodriguez5083
      @danrodriguez5083 6 лет назад +1

      MoonstonePearl21 the manga does go into more detail than the anime. They do explain the main Character, the villain, and even other characters not mentioned in the anime that make sense before going on to the ending. Plus the manga wasn't finished when they did the anime so they just made an ending. The manga is much longer to cover everything and went on way after the anime.

    • @moonstonepearl21
      @moonstonepearl21 6 лет назад +1

      Dan Rodriguez Really? That's so strange that so many people aren't aware of that when I was without even being a big fan of the show. Anime original series are the fewest out there. Most are adapted from a source material, with manga being the most prevalent generally. You'd think more would be aware of this, especially if you are a fan and with this being considered a classic 90s show many hold in high regard. I guess the manga just flew under a lot of peoples' radar. Part of it could be that I don't think manga was as readily available and quite as popular as it is today, so I'm sure that contributed to it.

    @kossemoore3342 6 лет назад

    You dont get it.... the reason why people cling to older anime over newer ones is not nostaglia solely. Nostalgia can only get you so far. You have to understand that anime in the 20th century was a completely different thing than it is today. The types of audiences the quantity, trending genres , trending tropes, visual aesthetics. People like myself that prefer older anime want something completely different than what many newer anime have to offer. I love high sci fi and giant robots anime. I can tell you as a mech fan aside from bandai we barely get any mech anime these days compared to what was put out in the past and the mech anime that do come out are not very good. Thats an example of one audience thats complety getting shafted. And what you call cheesy you know people were cool with that at the time and its really not that big of a deal where you need to knock it. All i can say is what people want out of their anime determines how they feel about particular series. In this climate youre just not going to get something like battle angel alita or a macross plus. Macross plus is a great example of a cast of complete adults dealing with the weight of their own past actions in a very real way withe back drop of an action mecha series. i had a conversation with a buddy before about how you never find anime featuring adults with real adult problems like that these days. Like im sure they exist but the variety just isnt there. So no, its not nostalgia. Its tastes(taste and aesthetic). The taste of classic anime fans does not match up with the taste(and aesthetic) of modern anime. This isnt to say modern anime is trash(well it is and isnt!). I like plenty of modern anime. steins;gate is great, masaki yuuasa is always doing something interesting, and i just saw maquia today, fantastic movie. However so many anime just dont appeal to me. Often i have to dig for something that i really want to see.

    Outlaw Star is better animated than most modern anime. Golden Age of anime was 1979 to 1999. Now anime has gone to garbage, where it’s quantity>quality.
