I know you guys HATE the idea of studded leather, but something you may not've considered is the possibility that the armor that's typically refered to as studded leather is actually a brigandine that's made using leather instead of fabric (since leather is specially treated animal hide, I consider it different from fabric). Just a thought for you guys to consider.

Somewhat related to your "advantage", have you had the chance to cross lances with Tobias Capwell? I've found few videos of actual jousting on YT and his name comes up a lot in them.

It wasn't even all that uncommon if you could afford it. In Netflix is a documentary where they make a plate armor from scratch that's based on the armor that was used by one of the knights of Queen Elizabeth. And that armor was colored blue and had decorations made of gold

I'm currently building a brigandine cuirass for my suit of armor. I would like to mention that brigandines can also be made out of linen (which is what i'm doing), leather, wool, or cotton. These natural fabrics were the most probable materials used to make brigandines. There's also many different variations of styles of brigandines. The reason the cloth is on the outside and the plates are on the inside was because the fabric on the outside helps sinch down the plates and lock them in place. The fabric also allows you to further stylize the look of each individual brigandine.

To clean your mail just spray it with some degreaser, scrub it with a brush then rinse it off & dry it in a 100 degree oven for a few minutes. Ian LaSpins from Knyght Errant channel does keep his mail & armor oiled which I believe he has stated as a common practice throughout history.

There definitely a lot of higher class brigandines, we find ones covered with velvets an silks while riveted with silver nails. And then there the design, the number an patten of the rivets, the lapping of the plates in both vertical an horizontal planes, the dishing of the wast plates.
Great vid, in the end, the brigandine is probably what you’re wearing for an unexpected fight but likely trouble and armor you’re wearing protects you.

Metatron you're a real blessing to all medieval and ancient history lovers, and it's even better given that you provide content for free! i've seen a lot of people look at brigandines and similar armor and think it to be just a fancy shirt. The same bias has been mistakenly popularized for example in the case of other medieval troops like Janissaries.

Friends asked me why I despised Kingdom of Heaven and Knight Fall. Two misconceptions of The Templars. Keep up the great work and thanks for the historical information from the USA.
Brigandine for me is the natural evolution of the Roman segmentata. Therefore it's my armour of choice, together with simetrical plate shoulders and an open face morrion helmet.
The minimum requirement for a soldier in the 14th and 15th centuries is not a brigandine or a mail shirt, that varies. Some cities and armies required that much, some required less. In the Bridport roll of 1457, of about 100 people who show up to the muster, only 2 have brigandines. Around half have textile jacks, and the rest are mostly without armour (with the exception of a harness or two). Not to mention that brigandines are pretty much nonexistant in the HRE anyway Also a note is that pauldrons don't always need to be pointed. It seems that there's basis for clipping them onto the brigandine with straps. How common this was is unsure to know but there is at least one depiction of it. Moreover pointing spaulders or pauldrons to the brig instead of the doublet also has basis. Lastly, brigandine spaulders show up a lot on flemish and iberian art, but not much elsewhere. I can't recall seeing it in Italy for example. An interesting note.
For french kingdom, there are many brigandine during the XVc. A lot in accounts, for the "franc-archers", for the "compagnies d'ordonnance" or either of Paris militia. Brig spaulders are sometimes named in accounts and shows like the painting of Jean Fouquet (with Scottish Guard) but they are few examples.

An account of the Langedoc in 1338 precise the payment for mounted squires with mail, horn or plates armor. The coat of plates, it's from St Maurice to Wisby and a little far away. Oh, and for italian brigandines, most of them in museum was made in italy.
I'd go brigandine with pauldrons, over mail shirt. Pair it with a barbute. Not sure about the legs, but that covers the upper half well with minimal restriction of movement, and you can put everything on yourself in minutes. Works with almost any weapon combination you want.
That brigandine is absolutely GORGEOUS. I have been lusting after a good brigandine for a while now. If I had the choice I'd go with a wine red corazzina paired with either full plate or splinted armor with matching wine red leather. It IS great to see the historical brigandine getting all this love! It is an amazing type of armor and it deserves better than being associated with studded leather
OMG I made it within the first hour of release! After all these years, I've finally done it! While this Pirates of the Caribbean sounding music is coming from this video 😂 That is also so the most beautiful brigandine I've ever seen. I'm so impressed on how it's historically built too. The tinning was my favorite piece of information, but you've certainly covered all the details. So many cool details, and they are all so awesome.
On behalf of Lindybeige i must say this warning; that while the blue and brass is absolutely gorgeous, it *does* make you look just a _little_ bit French.
One more advantage for thr brigandine over plate is ease of maintenence on the field. You need a really good forge an proper tools to repair a dent or a crack it a plate armor torso, but you can much more easelly repair or replace one or two metal peces of a brigandine. That migth have played a part on the choise of armor for a knight too.

Spell resistance can be applied to armor. But if the caster has spell penetration it's a wash.
But it's REALLY blue, it must offer some resistance to arcana or ice hits

I'd go brigandine with pauldrons, over mail shirt. Pair it with a barbute. Not sure about the legs, but that covers the upper half well with minimal restriction of movement, and you can put everything on yourself in minutes. Works with almost any weapon combination you want.
That brigandine is absolutely GORGEOUS. I have been lusting after a good brigandine for a while now. If I had the choice I'd go with a wine red corazzina paired with either full plate or splinted armor with matching wine red leather. It IS great to see the historical brigandine getting all this love! It is an amazing type of armor and it deserves better than being associated with studded leather

One more advantage for thr brigandine over plate is ease of maintenence on the field.
You need a really good forge an proper tools to repair a dent or a crack it a plate armor torso, but you can much more easelly repair or replace one or two metal peces of a brigandine.
That migth have played a part on the choise of armor for a knight too.
