  • On this episode of Make It Kustom, I try out my new shrinking discs from Wray Schelin's ProShaper Workshop. Along with my planishing hammer and hammer and dolly techniques, the highs and lows "equalize" with shrinking from the disc. This rare Willys hood is officially SAVED!

  • @Handbuilt1

    (IT'S ONLY MY SUGGESTION , )....... I think that if you where to use a well worn 4 inc 120 grit sanding disc or a new clean and strip disc using a lot of water to cool it down you would have strunk that area much faster and not crystallize the metal which (in your case been a early model hood that is made from metal with plenty of carbon ) , would have made the job easier and faster . NOT TO MENTION that , those shrinking discs are far too dangerous . I have used one of those ( ''shrinking discs '' ? ) Once before and.... I will never use one again for quite a few number of reason . BUT AGAIN THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION.... by the way..have you ever try a heavier slapper with teeth rather then a polished one for a job such as the hood ?

    Not by any means saying you're doing the shrinking wrong, but I've watched others using the grinder shrinker disc and they use it 'til the metal gets very hot so when they spray the water on it, it steams off. That is what causes the shrink to take place. But since I have never used it myself, that is only what I've seen multiple time as others use it. IDK, just passing on how others use it... Thumbs Up for your channel.

    • @MakeItKustom
      @MakeItKustom  3 года назад

      Yes it’s hard to tell that it’s steaming because I’m only concentrating on very small places during this. But believe me it’s getting hot and it’s definitely working. Thanks so much for your feedback!

      @@MakeItKustom so I absolutely love your channel I’m just starting to teach on my channel as well but I thought I’d help in an area I’m proficient at. The shrinking disc needs to have a 6k rpm grinder to make it work like it should. If it’s higher than that it’s hard to control and if it’s lower it takes forever. Your description talking about the golf ball dent you can actually shrink even that down with it. Anyhow I hope that tid bit helps you keep up the great content 👍🏻

    The shrinking disk will most definitely take out a golf ball size dent protruding out. Wray took a hammer to the inside of a NOS fender of mine from the 1960s and shrank it out with one pass with his 7” disc. I immediately bought his disk set at his class I was taking. Awesome tool he invented.

    Can you tell me the rpm on your polisher? Wray says a grinder is needed as polishers don't go fast enough, but mine is variable speed up to 3,000 rpm which sounds like the speed of yours and is close to the 4500 that I think Wray suggested. I'd rather use my polisher than buy a 9" grinder just for this.

  • @michaelgerdau6758

    Karl, I'm at this point right now with the hood on my 69 VW Squareback. I didn't realize how quick my English Wheel moved metal - I got carried away. Now I have to do some shrinking. I watch this video and purchased Wray's shrinking discs kit. I also have the Makita 9" angle grinder. How did you get the shrinking disc to fit without the spindle protruding from the disc? I've purchased different bushings and still the spindle sticks out past the disc.

  • @jdimeo1966
    @jdimeo1966 Год назад

    At 10:03 you mention the Makita is a buffer. I just watched this video by Wray Schelin and he mentioned (@7:45) that some buffers are not capable of 4500-6000 rpms that's why he recommends a grinder. Just thought I would pass that on.

    Funny you should be working be working on a Willys. My next door neighbor (older gentleman) has four Pre-WWII Willys Hotrods ('40 and '41 are the dates I remember). A Fire Engine Red one, a yellow one, a flat Black panel (truck/van ?), and one in his other garage that's still in parts, waiting for some attention. What little I can see of it under the piles of stuff, it still looks stock. He's got a couple of three buddies in the neighborhood that are also into Hotrods. I get treated to a mini-carshow from time to time. The guy down the block has a purple, open top, chopped Model T, wide rear tires. They're all classic Hotrod style, not Rat-Rods.
    My neighbor just came back from a show down near Bakersfield, CA. , and said his panel truck was a hit ( Yes, he did trailer it down there)
    You would approve of how he's detailed them out.
    Thanks for covering shrinking disks. I've been wondering about them for years. Useful to know (everything I own is dented, rusted, or both).

    I just stumbled on this video today, and I think you said you use the disc on your variable polisher. The disc is supposed to be used at about 6000 rpm. The polishers doesnt go that fast to create the heat you need. I watched the guy who manuf. this disc, and that s his own words. There should be some steam as you sprayed the surface after the use of the disc.

    I'd love to see how you would repair a flat panel that's been almost folded on itself that needs to be folded back out to a flat surface with the edges that are folded over 90 degrees have the rips repaired by mig welding them. I'm assuming that would be easy enough but it's getting the tension out of the panel, getting it flat that I'm interested in. I have a rear tool box area of a 1942 Dodge WC-51 and the rear panel on either side of the tailgate looks like someone backed into a fence post and effectively crushed the whole panel in.
    Thanks for the video Karl and I look forward do getting your advice mate.

    I'm not understanding how the shrinking disc will shrink the metal with heat when heat causes metal to expand???

  • @MrCbell57
    @MrCbell57 2 года назад

    The disk is a finesse way to move metal. Actually you want the sharpie to lubricator the disk so that it doesn’t over heat and Gaul the metal. Ray always ads sharpie to the metal when he goes back over it as an aid. The disk does remove the sharpie as it warms up and that shows the area you were working. He doesn’t ever use the disk without adding more sharpie. Again it helps identify where the work is being done and it acts as the lubricant needed when using this much friction on metal. But if you can do it and get away with it then koodos. I keep marking it before each application with disk. It works best for me that way.

  • @keithlanning7381
    @keithlanning7381 3 месяца назад

    If you dont remove or killl the rust wont you be transferring that rust on to the disk an then to what every you use that disk on from there on out

    Man, glad I found your channel! I too used a polisher for the shrinking disk, until I heard Wray state the reason for the grinder. More speed means more heat and a faster shrink.

      Hey John! Glad you found our channel as well, thanks for checking us out! Thanks for clarifying that for me, that makes a lot of sense. I’ll have to try that out one day

    Regarding the shrinking disk, I recall the manufacturer specifically citing the use of marker ink to guard AGAINST metal on metal contact, forestalling gauling- exactly the opposite of what was advised here.

      Hmmm yes you are probably right it’s funny tho so many other shrinking disc guys don’t lubricate at all

    I so wish l had a shrinking disc 30 years ago. Had an oil-canning problem on my van sides and l shrank (with a torch) and hammered and dollied and over and over and never got it right.
    Does it get to the point when a couple of coats of primer would make it perfect but you still keep going? I mean, how much is your time worth? You know, diminishing returns? Love watching your work, and that '39 Zepher is my dream car as well. Make it beautiful!

      Yeah Peter Certainly not all projects you would take this far. This particular hood is worth the effort. Most are not. I like to take into account what the project is and what standards are being set. Some things I’m completely fine with an eighth of an inch of filler because that’s very quick to get within and move on But like I say others are worth the time

      Specifically on those probably not. But you will learn the techniques by watching these videos

    This is odd. I have always used the heat shrink method. With a torch, hammer and dolly with a bucket of water and wet rag.

      Me too actually this is the first I’ve use the shrinking disc and it’s really blowing my mind. The hammer dolly Torch heat shrink still has its place.

    I have one of these discs but it's the smaller 4 and a half inch size. The smaller grinder spins it faster so it's more aggressive and heats up the panel quicker then I used a very wet cloth straight out of a bucket so it quenched the heated panel quicker and encouraged shrinking. It seemed to work quite well, I used it to help smooth out a section on a rear quarter that I'd done some localised heat shrinking to help smooth out the resulting hammer marks. It certainly saved time to get to a stage where it was a thin skim with filler. I'd like to try the larger one you have as it should help to level out a larger area. Good video, I've just subscribed to your channel! A big thumbs up from the Shetland Isles at the far north of Scotland!

    Is there any abrasive (like diamond dust) on the surface of the shrinking disk? Or is it simply polished stainless steel? Also - it might be very interesting to use a thermo camera to show the heated locations created by the shrinking disk. Thank you for another very interesting video.

      It’s simply bare stainless it’s not polished
