    Hey sir, I tried writing a thesis on Macbeth using the theme of guilt. I would appreciate if you can tell me if it’s too long , or if I should include more ideas.
    Although Shakespeare crafts Lady Macbeth’s and Macbeth’s guilt as mirroring their moral failure, he leaves ambiguity as to whether it is initiated by “supernatural soliciting” or “ambition” to defy the great chain of being. However, the evolving depictions of their guilt could be used to criticise the Patriarchy as a regrettable feature of Jacobean society.

    Hi sir!
    I tried to write my own thesis for an essay on scrooge as a changed man I was hoping you could tell me how to improve it- any help would be really appreciated, thank you!
    How does dickens present scrooge as a changed man?
    Dickens presents Scrooge as a changed man which is symbolic of the potential dickens sees in society to adopt the philanthropic ideals that he strongly believed in and has constructed this allegorical tale to communicate. In writing this, Dickens's goal was to spread the message that love, happiness, and community are more valuable than material wealth and that even the most corrupted and consumed by avarice and miserliness have a chance at redemption.

    Thank you so much for this video, but I'm wondering how I would link guilt to the patriarchal society in Macbeth. I know I should talk about the sleepwalking scene, but I'm not quite sure how guilt relates to the patriarchy, since both characters feel guilt.

    • @MrSallesTeachesEnglish
      @MrSallesTeachesEnglish  5 лет назад +9

      In a patriarchal society men are trained to act on their emotions externally, through an expression of power. Women are trained to direct that power against themselves. So, Macbeth copes with his guilt by choosing many more victims, while Lady Macbeth commits suicide.

    • @adid2911
      @adid2911 5 лет назад +4

      @@MrSallesTeachesEnglish So I can talk about Shakespeare criticising both the patriarchy and the idea of masculinity. Can I say that Shakespeare develops Lady Macbeth's mental state to highlight how women are marginalised by society; initially she is critical of "a heart so white" to attempt to gain power, yet at the end she is corrupted by her own guilt- reflecting how women cannot gain power?

    Hi Mr Salles, not long until my first lit exam - am very scared haha - and was wondering if you could read my thesis on Scrooge as an outsider if these are the right lines or pls tell me if I need more themes linked:
    Dickens presents Scrooge initially as an outsider, with his misanthropy as a consequence of circumstance and abandonment by his parents and friends, yet develops him as a gradually changing and self-redeeming construct with the consciousness of his own actions,and thus, isolating the actions as wrong morally. Scrooge’s apathy is however not presented as abstract, for he is a similar employer - in terms of wage - with society in general; this would illuminate Dickens’ urge for society as a whole to be more empathetic and redeeming as an employer, as Scrooge is by the end.

    Dear Mr Salles please take a look at my response.Thank you!
    How does Shakespeare present Macbeth throughout the play?
    Macbeth is arguably presented as an anti-hero in order to show how he destroyed his moral and Christian values. At the beginning of the play Lennox says “what a haste looks through his eyes.” Which may suggest that even after killing all Norwegians Macbeth’s bloodlust hasn’t yet been fulfilled, this may have been another pivotal factor in which Macbeth killed King Duncan and his two Knights despite his loyalty towards them and when he’s trying to control his desire in which he speaks in soliloquy “Is this a dagger I see before me”. Also throughout the play Macbeth has the fear of God in him but this is captivated by the murderous ambition he has held. This could’ve been a way of warning to King James 1 on how even his most loyal knight may be able to turn on him and also a way of warning the reader of keeping their thoughts and actions clean which is what would’ve made King James 1 be satisfied with the play as he wanted England to follow Christian and moral values unlike Macbeth.

    thank you sir! would this be a good thesis for utterson jekyll and hyde? (i have just watched your video on it btw)
    Stevenson constructs Utterson as the archetype of a typical man to expose the hypocrisy of society by suggesting that manhood is naturally dual-natured. He also suggests that Utterson is loyal to Jekyll, not only because they are friends, but rather because of his attraction to the evil in Hyde. Stevenson therefore argues that the dual nature of Victorian society is self-destructive as it creates a society where men feel the need to uphold order and decorum in order to survive with a good reputation.

    • @MrSallesTeachesEnglish
      @MrSallesTeachesEnglish  2 года назад +2

      Nearly - you have nearly all the right ideas and language, but not fully explained. The last sentence doesn't quite make sense - how is order and decorum self destructive? You need the idea of hypocrisy, appearance and facade for this to make sense. Also, perhaps he is not attacking manhood per se, but the gentleman class.

    • @itsme-jb9eb
      @itsme-jb9eb 2 года назад +2

      @@MrSallesTeachesEnglish thank you! would this be better?
      Stevenson constructs Utterson as the archetype of a typical man to expose the hypocrisy of society by hinting at the dual-nature of the gentleman class, for example by revealing certain cracks in Utterson’s rigid civilised facade. Stevenson also suggests that Utterson is loyal to Jekyll, not only because they are friends, but rather because of his attraction to the evil in Hyde. Perhaps Stevenson criticises how Utterson’s reputable facade is necessary in this dual-natured Victorian society in order to maintain a name of honour and influence.
