The way he describes how he felt after he beat ff8 is the same way i felt about 9. I guess we all have a certain ff that will be unforgettable to us. This interview was so wholesome and genuine.

Ben Starr just named dropped Siphon Filter! LITERALLY no one I've spoken to has remember that game. It was amazing! Definitely a game that stood out to me back in the ps1 days.

This will sound wildly corny but I genuinely got tears in my eyes from thinking about the fan/critic reactions to FF16. This is such an important franchise to me. The way he describes 8 is the way I felt about 7 and I’ve been a fan ever since. I’m happy new fans will get that feeling and I’m so proud of the team that’s made it possible.
I love that someone spreads the love for Final Fantasy VIII, which is also my favorite. It also saved me from a very bad time in my life.

I started with FF8 and fell in love with Squall and Rinoa. To hear him say he started with 8 just made me love 16 even more.
I’m a huge FFVII fanboy. Been obsessed since it originally released. Day Dreamed of a remake for years. Cried when the trailer dropped.
That said, I hope this game is the best FF game ever made. Hearing Bens interviews, I feel like he’s one of us that got his dream to be in an FF game. Im so proud of a man I never heard of a few weeks ago, and feel lucky we have someone that cares as much as we do.
Such a great way to get to know somebody. The games we play & how we connect to them speaks volumes.

As with all other interviews Ben’s passion of video games and FF shines through. Really can’t wait to experience his performance as I play through FFXVI.

Fantastic interview. Its refreshing to see people like Ben who are so passionate about FF get the role, because as mentioned its quite rare. And not that someone who isnt passionate about a franchise couldnt perform well but from what i’ve heard so far i think Ben’s performance is going to set a few benchmarks for voiceacting, really impressive.
I think, or would guess, that passion plays a part in how the endproduct turns out to be.
Edit: I really found the format of this interview refreshing as well.

I can’t believe how similar Ben’s experience with FFVIII was compared to mine. It was my very first FF too. The game was a safe haven for me growing up too, I made such a connection to the entire game as well. I’m so happy for him to be able to work on a FF game as good as XVI, that must literally be a dream come true. I hope we see more of him in the future.
40+ hrs in and Clive is my favourite protagonist. the combination of the writing and Ben Starr's work has cemented him into my personal #1 slot

Brilliant interview. I already knew that Ben was a huge gamer like myself but he talked about a lot more here than I've heard him say before. You might even say that the Starrs have aligned and we are blessed to have him voice the main protagonist of FF16 😅
so i usually dont react to sad stuff in games that often, the last one being arthur's death in rdr2, but hearing clive begging ifrit to stop and then vowing to kill it gave me goosebumps and had me shedding a few tears haha. i've been on the preload screen all morning lol i cant even run dungeons in diablo

I think I watched all of Ben's interviews, even if he says the same things in all of them, I keep watching.
I started with 7 and was pretty bad at it too and couldn’t get past the bombing mission timer at the start.
When I finally did I too felt that I started to understand the game and it was the first one I ever finished.
To this day I don’t know what drew me to the game in the video store because it was just the logo with the white background. 😅

8 was the first i played from start to finish..i saw 7 on a friends console before i got mine..but it was years later until i got 7..

Ben is great. Listening to him makes me want to buy FFXVI and marathon it to completion. Only problem is, I’ve already done just that.
Amazing interview, very relaxed and calming. Loved listening to it while I did other stuff. What Ben said about having an emotional connection with a game is exactly how I feel like. I've noticed recently, the games I've been buying (like diablo 4 for example) are more so with the possibility of playing with friends but I will not remember anything from the game, not like I remember things from Dragon Age or Inside, or ICO. Kinda made me reevaluate things and just save myself some money for the games I'm actually interested in like story/character driven games.

I swear i had the same experience with ff8.... didn't know at the beginning but the OST and the atmosphere of this game didn't allow to stop playing until I have figured out the whole Draw system... It was my first FF GAME 👍👍
Nice to see ff8 get some love. I get its not the best one, but to me it is my favorite for the fact that not only was my first ff but also my first rpg ever and it was what caused me to grow as a story driven gamer.
This is exactly how I felt about FFVIII too. It was the first ever game of that genre I played and I was hooked. I’m probably the gamer I am now because of that game back then. Crazy to think of things that way…
I can respect that, even though 8 has never really been my favorite in the series, i understand that every ff fan has that certain favorite in the franchise regardless of how popular it is/was. Its interesting to learn why a certain title was a favorite for someone else.
While FFX is the one I resonated with the most even today. I have a soft spot for 8. Particularly because the 1st time I fought Ultimacia every party member except Rinoa fell and she was in her Sorcerer state so I had no control over her and both she and Ultimacia were slinging spells at each other. With really low hp on both sides. The rng gods were on my side because Rinoa won the fight won the spell slinging with 1hp left. It was so harrowing. Good times 😊

Lol I loved FF8, it wasn't my first FF and it's not my fav, but I loved it still. I also however didn't understand how to play. I ground out levels and got stuck on the space ship cause the aliens would one shot me. I was SO mad cause I would level grind so much and I was like HOW ARE THESE THINGS SO STRONG?! XD Didn't find out until much later that the level grinding made it so much harder than it needed to be.

LOVE that he mentions EVerybodys Gone To The Rapture, that game gets slept on so much and its not fair, the story is so engaging and intriguing and everyone should give it a try! the fact that hes such an indie lover just makes me like him even more, i hope he gets so many more roles in videogames cos he absolutely killed it as Clive, and he obv has such a passion for games!!

I am glad Ben could describe his feeling how he had beaten FF8. I feel same energy of connection to the game but it is with FF7, my very first FF game. I used my savings to buy the game because of the CD cover art. The funny thing is, early hours of the game I did not own PSX Memory Card, until one of my friend told me that I should buy Memory Card. It was interesting later on because I got the Memory Card from my Grandma (as now she is watching me from above). Not only the experience with FF7, but also the person involved in my life during the time I beat the game, it always remain in my heart. That’s how my emotional connection with this franchise. Every numbered fantasy series has it own story. I am happy how Ben give it all when it comes to VA for FF16. Good job! You deserved many appreciation!
FF8 was my first game too in the FF franchise i was about 14 i think when i played it :) and i am 36 now i still have my ff7 ff8 ff9 original casing :) like Ben mentioned the white thick cases lol an pheonix was always my fave :)

8 had a very natural character development and love story that just... works. It will always be a special kind of nostalgia.

Final Fantasy is very similar to Zelda, in that your favorite one is usually the 1st one you ever played or beat...

FF8, story-wise, was my favorite. My mind was blown towards the end after finding out who Squall's family members were.
I am glad that Final Fantasy VIII is getting love even though it is one of my least favorite ones. I used to love VIII a lot as well but as I grew older and revisited all the old Final Fantasy games, it is hard to ignore VIII's major flaws.
I find that the story went downhill when Irvine revealed that we were all childhood friends. The story moving forward from there is moving too quickly and Squalls character development also went by fast. His interest in Rinoa felt so sudden. There wasn't a proper progression to let their relationship seem believable. Zidane and Garnet's relationship was better and felt more organic.
However, the saving grace of VIII are the optional contents. Collecting all the GFs is still enjoyable and creating the most broken junction set up for all characters still feels rewarding.
I'd say VIII is a solid 7/10 for me. The story isn't just doing it for me. A lot of interesting concepts but most of them were executed poorly.
I bet Ben bakes a great cake.

OMG why is Ben Starr's experience with FFVIII all of ours? Also I did no like 10, so I have been out of the FF world for over 20 years. I just want to thank everyone at Square for putting out such a great game in FFXVI that not only am I back and immersed in this world, it's rekindled my love of my past FF games and I'm currently playing the 8 remaster all over again, with plans to go through 7 again (OG game) and even finally play through 6 which people have encouraged me to do for years.
I cannot understate how much I loved 16, and how great art doesn't just inspire love for that piece of art, but also elevates your love for art in general and makes you seek out even more art around you.

FFVIII was the first video game I really played and I was instantly in love with it. Up until XVI was released I was hooked on FFXIV. Weirdly my character in that who I originally made as a tribute to Zack in Crisis Core which I played on PSP looks just like Clive. I think the team have done an amazing job with XVI and the voice acting is top notch.

In ff16 the way he throat breathes his lines gets really annoying after a while.
Maybe I'll try German next,comes speaking three languages in handy for once. I'm from the Netherlands not so abnormal here to speak at least to some degree,English and/or Getman as well besides our own Dutch language.
