Lewitt MTP W950 Mic Review / Test (vs. SM58, E835, KMS105, U87 Ai)

- Today I review a brand new multipattern handheld condenser mic from Lewitt. This thing also has a high pass filter and a -12dB pad, and the huge surprise is the fact that you can unscrew the handle and get a wireless capsule. It does great with handling noise, background noise, plosives, cupping the mic, and it offers that standard Lewitt sound which is very clear and bright.

Villains!
Thx for the great in-depth review! If any of you have any questions about the MTP W950 or any other of our products, we are happy to answer them all. Greetings from Austria!
My pleasure. Thanks for sending it over so I could test it out and put it through it’s paces. Great work.
Lewitt has outdone themselves yet again. Truly one of the most innovative and extraordinary modern audio brands out there today. I'm team Lewitt all the way!
I’ve been consistently impressed with Lewitt’s mics. This one seems super interesting to me as someone who doesn’t really have a favorite handheld (but wow that price). Abso-lewittly awesome otherwise.
But hot dang if that Earthworks isn’t beautiful.
Yes, Earthworks nails it with their design!
The Earthworks SR314 is pretty and feels great in your hand and sounds amazing, but I’m sending back a second one to be repaired so I’m a little worried about reliability.
@@fiddlesethhey mate, have you had any more problems with the SR314?
I wanna buy one but I’m just not sure about the reliability. Let me know please. Cheers.
@@francoosores5397 This last one has been solid and I've had no more problems with it. If you're in a club with questionable snakes though I'd recommend bringing your own preamp or phantom power supply just in case and make sure the power is completely drained before plugging and unplugging.
@@fiddleseth thank you for getting back to me, I’ve got the Neumann kms105 the Sennheiser e965 and the Shure 87A, do you think that the SR314 is better quality than all of those mentioned above?
The best channel for sound tech! I can't wait for your review of the new Rhode NT1 Gen. 5!
Very Impressive Microphone with tons of features and actually sounds super sweet. Thank You Bandrew for your professional review on it.
I am a massive fan of the "woah, woah.... boop!" Feels so warm and caring... Keep that coming Mr Bandrew!
Thanks Bandrew for your time in making this content. As always it was nice microphone review. Your honesty and advice for purchasing equipment is refreshing. Wish you the best.
Dear Madams and Sirs, dear Bandrew, thank you for this thorough review. It seems Lewitt made a good one.
Damn that Neumann kms105!!!! Just a league on its own
Yeah the KMS105 is still my personal favorite. It sounds so good.
Great review as always!
I might have told Lewitt at several occasions to make sure whatever they send you have more than the normal amount of stickers. Cause you love them so much.
Sounds gorgeous like all Lewitts.
Perfect video, utterly flawless.
Very good review. I thought it was good throughout but on the acoustic it really stood out.
Sounded awesome as per usual for Lewitt's upper end line up....LCT441 Flex and up. Killer microphones!
I went to the Podcastage website since YT made everything sound so close. It is definitely warmer and brighter than the V7. The Earthworks mic sounded almost exactly like the new Lewitt. I really liked the Lewitt. It has some very interesting features.
I would be very interested to see other mic capsules like the V7 and the SM58 that they make for wireless on that body to see what the difference would be.
Monsieur, excellent review as ever. Lewitt just keeps making great gear. This or the Electovoice would be my choice. Merci!
Monsieur! THANK YOU!
My lord that is clear and present. I like it....a lot
Came back here for the first time in a while to express my excitement for the inevitable review of the new 5th gen Rode NT1
Patiently waiting for the Lauten Audio LA-320 review 😳
Why do you keep reviewing all these great microphones that I can't really use or afford? I'm an amateur reed player on a budget after all!
Seriously, I appreciate your demos and find the results to be applicable for me recording my horns. What works well on voices, works well in the hornsas they're in most of the same range as our voices. I've also gotten used to your voice so I can hear pretty quickly the difference on the various mics. Thanks to your reviews I have a modest shelf o' mics that I can use for various recordings depending on my goals.
THanks for the consistently great content.
I know you just said it as a joke, but I always like having the excuse to explain this. I review mic after mic after mic, not to create a sense of FOMO or a sense of "GO OUT AND BUY EVERYTHING", but rather to create a library of reviews that are available when someone is researching gear to buy. That way the videos are available and they can pull on the data they need and see the tests they want and make that more informed decision.
Thank you for the kind words and for the justification to get on my soap box for a minute. =)
I woke up in midnight, saw this video on the list and started watching. I thought there was something wrong with my headphones so I switched to my studio headphones. Then I started to doubt if there was something wrong with my computer or even my hearing. To make this wasn't the case, I switched to some other videos on this channel and BSP and founded both my ears and headphones were ok (thank goodness). What I want to say is -- the lower frequencies seemed totally absent from the very beginning. It just sounded like some very aggressive HPF was engaged so what I heard was just clear, crispy, high frequencies, just the opposite of SM7B. I searched the time stamps of this video and jumped to the spec part to check the frequency response chart and said "no wonder" to my self.
I have LCT 240 Pro and LCT 440 Pure and realize Lewitt mics generally sound brighter than many other brands. I love this tonal factor and record most of my teaching materials with LCT 440. Yet I didn't realize Lewitt could choose to make a hand-held mic, I mean MTP W950, this "thin" or even "sharp". Well, maybe I was wrong. Maybe I have to listen to this review again in the day time when I am in better shape both mentally and physically.
Wow that mic sounds great! I like it better than the Neumann (from what I can tell)! Lol. I'm sure that sounds crazy! They did an amazing job. Nice review, nice video!
Woah. Sounds pretty darn good. Unfortunately, they know and price it accordingly.
It's more on the honest/unflattering side (ah that U87 gloss...), almost SDC style, but still balanced. As someone who doesn't like/prefer the Lewitt sound, I am impressed. Even preferred it to the KMS105.
I was using lewitt mtp 740cm for few years and it was very good microphone, now w950 is one or more steps forward.
Lol Your fist pumping was surprisingly wholesome and just what I needed this afternoon. 💜
I like a lot the sound of the lewitt. this brand are just insane, have excellent mics for a rasonable price.
I have a KMS 105 in my kit and this Lewitt compares about equally on your voice. The wind foam sounds awful (they need to find a different material), the pattern switch really doesn’t do much, and though the pad and high-pass are interesting, there’s also more parts to break in a handheld form factor. AKA an invitation for problems. So, I won’t be giving up the Neumann 105 any time soon. As for the U87? In this particular mix I prefer the sound of your voice on the handheld. Which is not to say the U87 is a slouch. It’s still got a cleaner more malleable frequency response, but in this particular video I don’t think it worked as well as expected. Thanks for the review. As always incredibly thorough and helpful.
Really helpful review of 950. I also listened to your review of the 940 which is now half the price it was due to the launch of the 950. Sound wize specifically for acoustic and singing you seem to be saying this new version is much better than the 940. Correct?
Lewitt really does make some nice stuff.
Lewitt really going all in with this one. Looking at all the features this is one impressive mic!
RUclips's compression really does a number on the audio. That mic sounds totally different (and a lot better) on the HD audio from your website.
I love this one.
did you already test the OC707 from austrian audio? i am considering to buy one or two for our culture club stage for certain live events because our sm58 mics really sound dull. i want better resolution / detail.
I would love it if you did a review on the United UT-87.
please do the blue blueberry Next! would love a shoot out review for a best of its class microphone in the $1,000 - $2,000 price range
W950 is a solid performer...like it...sending love and peace to everyone...
It sounds great but I was really surprised by the 940, I don’t know if it’s just with your voice but it has an almost perfect resonance that really makes it punch
It was way over due for a mic company to make one you can swap the capsule on a wireless body. I hope other will follow Lewitt moves onto that.
Sounded great on the acoustic guitar.
Waaay outta my price range but I REALLY like how this sounds so far?! About a 1/3rd of the way through atm
Nice Review 😄😄 And whats about stickers ?
Dang man, looking slim!
I love Lewmann microphones...
The Lewitt sounds great and it's versatile so I can understand why a professional vocalist would buy one, but for a cheapskate like me it's good to know that there are more affordable options that sound pretty good too.
Finally e835 in comparisons! I hope it stays forever. By the way, the e835 did very well.
I have it and I think it definitely sounds very close..esp for the price difference.
Off topic a little-I hope you take a look at the NT1 5th generation 32 bit float marketing. Practical or....?
Is this worth $799 (and for a Chinese built product)? There are other mics that sound better and it's pretty noisy. Lots of features but there are better choices for less money unless you have a need for the features. The SM58 comparison was interesting because the Lewitt wasn't eight times better.
Hi. i hope you are doing well, i would like to ask you about the dynamic usb microphones.
Is it a good deal.
If I want one mic to Interview people at the street, use for Stand Up talks, and also use to sing in to record myself for training an record maybe to a H4n as I already have at home or to a Tascan dr-10 for example and somehow broadcast live to instagram or RUclips or apple podcast what tools do I need to get live broadcasts? and which mic is best for the combined need to do street interviews, singing and stand up?... should I try the new ZOOM M2 for example? and how to get the recoding live online? or should I use the Lewitt Interview mic but is that good to sing in in comparison to the Zoom M2 for example? or should I look into a very different dynamic mic?... hope to hear from you when possible and get some help understanding what set up I need and what mic actually works for these needs in one mic? thanks!
I have purchased every hi end mic from condenser to cardioid etc. the mtp940cm it’s my everyday tool now. And have beaten even earthworks and Newmann’s!
That’s why I was interested in know if 950 is better.
🤔
monsieur, please do a review of DPA d:facto
+1 ... or 2028 at the same price category as W950
Danke!
Thank you so much Rainer!
Hope you'll review an Austrian Audio OC707 in this category.
CAn you test Dpa mics pls. They are top or the price and i am still cant decide between kms 105, 4018, 950w and sr40v. ))
Sounds good overall, but holy heck it'll need a de-esser and a low pass filter stat.
I love that Shure Beta 87A... I need to grab one of those. Plus, the Neumann handheld was soooo much better.
3:13 Bandrew, for the umpteenth time, that's more like 165 degrees, and you do it every time. To demonstrate the response at 180 degrees you need to speak into butt end of the mic where the cable plugs in. If you tilt the mic even a little then your angle is less than 180.
Yes, I'm pedantic. No, I won't stop.
This microphone gives me Sennheiser MKH 416 vibes and I don't know why. I'd be curious to hear how close they sound. :P //Would it be blasphemous to say that I think you sound better on the $100 SE V7? Feels like it's a much more natural sound as compared to this $900 one :P
Not blasphemous at all. It’s why I include the samples and comparisons as well, so you can hear it against different options to determine what the tonal differences are and hopefully make a better determination of what mic is right for you. The V7 certainly is more flat sounding, but the KMS105 is the sweet spot for me.
@@BandrewScott Thanks Bandrew! :D
@@BandrewScott Oh hell yeah that KMS105 sounds fantastic!!
Hey
Please, can you compare w950 to akg c636?
I need a Mic Review of Neumann KMS105!!
I made one years ago ruclips.net/video/aehA5qVIs9U/видео.html
Grazie.
I'm consistently surprised with how little praise I see of the Lewitt handhelds, especially one with a cool spin such as this. Granted, this might be too bright for my voice, but it's otherwise a tempting mic, albeit pricy.
That's because it's expensive
HAHAHAHAHA.....Buddy, you are freakin' hilarious! love it!
Purely live_stage mic.
Please Review Samson R31s
Mic sounds really good. Little bit too much sibilance. Could you use this for podcasts?
I did so on a few episodes. ruclips.net/video/lQ110tOpBYk/видео.html
Hey can you make a slate digital ml 1 microphone review i've waiting it for a. long time please....
We need a review for chandler redd microphone
Monsieurs!😁
hi bandreww i have been following u since past year.. i gained a lot of knowledge from ur videos and due to it i have helped a lot of my friends and i am a beatboxer from India and but the thing here is i have a little request to you can u provide me a mic of yours please? i am suffering for financial crisis rn.. but any budget mic would work like sv200, behringer sl84c or etc.. pls can u help? i am in serious need !
I live for the hello noyman
I feel like they could have made the logo bigger.
For live performances the E835 is excellent. In isolation it sounds a bit thin compared to the SM58 but live it just cuts through. Could also just be the contrarian in me..
I don't think it's the contrarian in you. The E835 is popular because it serves a purpose. If it didn't have any utility it wouldn't have ever become popular. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on it, I really appreciate that.
@2:18 👽
How would this compare to the ksm11 in terms of vocal quality?
I haven't used a KSM11 so I'm not sure how it compares to that. I'm sorry.
@@Podcastage ok thank you
What's wrong with free stickers?
4:14 this dude just turned into an alien
Anyone else thinks the S's are a tad too harsh on this mic, or is it just my setup/hearing?
If I were a rich man I might consider this microphone.
I don't get what your problem is with stickers but they looked destroyed to me. You know as soon as they land somewhere they're gonna be crinkled and pick up Dustin debris in the other ruined and you'll never find one of them too.
Can I have the stickers you don't destroy?
Please? 😁
We all know that you didn't destroyed the stickers just because Lewitt sent you free of charge the mic for the review, so all good, we understand you.
P.S. Could u please buy the mic and destroy the stickers please?
Do you really hate stickers that hard?
You could buy a V7 and an SM58 and have two great mics and $500 left over.
It's a nice mic, but....
Unrelated but you've lost weight, Bandrew. You look healthy. What's your secret?
how about dpa?😂
That mic is way to expensive it sounds great but its not worth the price imo
tremendo microfono pero vale 800 dolares lo cual esta fuera de los rangos permitidos para todo publico
If I was Lewitt, I'd have hidden another sticker inside the microphone...
You should get a years worth of hummers for that price..
wtf man, why do you get all these mics for free ??????
$800 and "assembled" in China. Come on guys, even my Sennheiser 845 and 945 (costing a fraction of the price) are made in Germany. Nothing wrong with some Chinese made microphones, there are some decent Behringer mics made in China, but they cost $25 not $800. At this price this mic should be made, assembled, packed and so on, in Austria. Is the $700 Neumann 105 or the $700 Earthworks 314 "assembled" in China? I'm sure this is a great microphone but the manufacture of premium quality products at a premium price should not be farmed out to low cost labour China. Or at $800 is this super cheap for what it is? At $800 I would think there is enough margine for it to be made in Austria and if not how much extra would it cost to assemble in Austria? But hey, it's your money, if you want to spend $800 on a microphone made in China, go ahead. I do have one €800 microphone in my collection, that was made in Latvia and non of my others, priced from €130 to €250, are Chinese made. I have bought Chinese made microphones of various brands (e.g. AKG, Beyer Dynamic, Behringer) for students, all decent quality, but non of them cost more that €50.
Hello Neumann 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Electric guitars sounded thin and so did the acoustic... I don't know what you were listening too... I don't think I heard the low E on the acoustic for the whole recording... This is only for stage vocals which it would do well... The Neumann is the one...
I don't hear anything in this mike that makes it significantly superior to the SM58, certainly nothing that would justify the absurd price.
You're paying for the technology as well, but if you don't hear or perceive a benefit to justify the price then you have just saved yourself $600 because you can just go with the SM58. That's awesome. Hope you have a great day and make some great recording.s
@@Podcastage These were presented as stage mikes, no? I know an awful lot of musicians, and not a one of them pays any attention to the mikes. They're gonna use what the venue provides because that's what the sound man/woman is accustomed to and will in all likelihood be an SM58. I can count on one finger the bands that I know that use their own mikes.
"Monsieur"
800 bucks? WTF.
It’s a feature packed mic that solves problems for a professional market, and it’s priced as such.
@@Podcastage
...IF it had lower self-noise, AND had been made in Austria....then maybe. (and I'm a Lewitt owner/user)
lewitt is a lil too crispy
Yeah, not my cup of tea soundwise
Im good with my sm58 and sm48, both sound better to my ears than this one:P
