I once heard a very eminent musicologist say that if Buxtehude hadn't existed Bach as we know and revere him wouldn't have existed either. This glorious performance certainly bears that out.
The NEW recording from FANTASTICUS, called "Sonnerie & Other Portraits" will be released on 1st September 2013. It is available from the Resonus Classics website, or all the usual places. It features Marais, Rameau, Leclair and others.
Superlative as this sounds, words fail me so all I can is "Excellent!" Such a tight performance and a great sounding room! I hope that you realize how fortunate you all are to be able to perform such works. Speaking as one who probably will never realize his musical potential as a keyboardist/continuo/composer, I envy you: in a healthy way. You are so lucky that you get to do this as your life's work. Cherish it as I'm sure you do. Thank you very much for this video!!!
Buxtehude did not travel far or very much at all but his music and reputation as a skilled organist did. He wrote cantatas that were a prelude to Bach in this field and the latter composer went out of his way to hear him play though they probably never met because he was so in awe of him.
WOW this is so beautiful. Thank you! I'm a big fan of Marin and St. Colombe, and this is exceptional as well. I agree with an earlier post, it almost brought tears to my eyes. It is so passionate. And the players are so good. Kimura-San is an excellent performer, when she closes here eyes I can feel her love for what she plays. Also, the editing and camera work is the best I've seen in a performance. Great Job!! Looking for more.
A fantastic performance of a wonderful piece! Bravo. side note - did anyone else notice the interesting chord right at 4:36? The violinist plays a 7th - B& A, whereas the music actually has a fifth, D&A (which makes more sense over the f# in the bass, leading to the G minor chord.)
DIETRICH BUXTEHUDE { BAD OLDESLOE , HOLSTEIN 1637~1707 LUBECK } ~ SONATA A 2 { BUXWV 272 } ~ ENSEMBLE FANTASTICUS ~.
Tokinori Yanagita In fact, Bach used that phrases because Buxtehude was the idol of Bach, he did a lot of kilometers (sometimes walking) just for hear him.
@ 6.50 and further, if Rie Kimura can play this well then she surely could play the whole rosary sonata's by H.I.F von Biber, Guillermo would be super great to play the continuo.... "breakfast with Biber" It would be great to hear you play that !! 2 Hours+ sheer delight.
In contrast to Bach Buxtehude is full of spontaneity and freedom which is unbelievably well understood by the Japanese lady. The normal Japanese performance is often only too exact and boring lacking them. She is as a Japanese einmalig, eccecionale .
That doesn't take away the feeling of spontaneity, it's easy to imagine that someone could improvise over a ground bass in particular :) And no reason to get worked up :)
6 or 7 string viola gamba . Why did the cello have to limit itself to 4. The newer violins have 5,6, even 7 strings but alllower range , Why no High B string for violin.I'm sure its all been triedand harmonics are especially wonderful so its ok!
One of my favorite works by Buxtehude. The guy was prolific. Even JS Bach idolized this guy.
Me,too.
Best Version ever
Someone asked why we love this early music so much. Simple, it is dogma free and on a human scale.
...exactly mostly viola da gamba its close to human voice.
A group of musicians clearly enjoying the music they play
That is surely what it's about!
Never knew Buxtehude made music like this and could sound like this! Impressive!
I once heard a very eminent musicologist say that if Buxtehude hadn't existed Bach as we know and revere him wouldn't have existed either. This glorious performance certainly bears that out.
Bach walked 25 miles to meet this man. That ought to tell you something.
Buxtehude truly is a precursor considering his chamber music anticipates the italian masters like Corelli much later.
it's so refreshing to see actual musicians PERFORMING a piece, and doubly so since it's such a beautiful piece
Bravo
There is no better pace for this song, these artists do it the best they can
Wonderful playing. Wonderful recording. Wonderful Buxtehude! 👍 ❤️
You three make an awesome team.
Wonderful music and sensitive performance

Bravo, I can see and hear that it´s played with great joy!
A delight to listen to.
Stunning...
I never heard a Buxtehude sonata performance compatible to this, that's Music!
Just wonderful performance! Thank you!
This is difinitly a most incredibly talented ensemble to a high level.
This is like totally unbelievable, so it must be maricules!
Bravo!
Quelle performance! Très beau! Beaucoup d'unité entre vous! Bravo! Bonne continuation!

Wonderful Group, excellent interpretation of Buxtehude! Back was a fan of this man, which tells us, in which Buxtehude belongs!
So much grace and beauty ....i am captivated.
I love the Passacaglia part. So profound. It has so much meaning for me.

Marvelous!
This is an excellent interpretation and recording Guillermo, many thanks for sharing. I thoroughly enjoy listening to this over and over :-)
Why do we love this old music so much, are we different?
C'est "fantastique"; quelle merveille!
Que d'émotions profondes (r)éveillées...
Gorgeous music and great video with interesting angles.

Stupendous performance of extraordinary music.
The violin is very tonal !!!! Super !
Bach.
So beautiful understanding (feeling) of this music...
Great music. - made all the better with good acoustics, and no vibrato.
Not to diminish the the violin and viola da gamba parts but the harpsichord playing is quite exquisite. The acoustics in this church are amazing too.
Wie gelassen und befreit! Eine der scheonsten Music der Welt!
What you imagine to be freedom is actually set of variations over a repeated bass line played by the harpsichord.
Magnificent performance!
A favourite of mine. Beautiful.
bravo! bellísima interpretación
Brilliant.
Bravissimi!!!
Wow, the sound of that violin!
A fantastic performance of a wonderful piece! Bravo.

wow rob, nearly brought tears to my eyes,
Magnifique, authentique, quels musiciens!
Bravi!!! Senza parole!!!
Maravilla !!
Einfach wunderbar!
Thank you ❤️
so beautiful!
magnifique bravo
Maraviglioso !
Bravo !!! Magnifique !
This is awesome stuff so tight motum perpetuu

Beautiful!
Quels talents
super, merveillous.
Thanks Music for de sky esecution perfect
Bonjour
Magnifique votre entente votre plaisir à jouer
Heel mooi! Dank wel!
incredible
Bravo!!!
La Viole est de Pierre Bohr a Milan. Je suis tres heureux avec l'instrument!
core of the beauty
lovely!
Viva Buxtehude¡¡¡¡¡
How interesting ! Very long phrases are used like Bach.
+Giovanni Battista Vivaldi Thank you for the info. !!
Tokinori Yanagita In fact, Bach used that phrases because Buxtehude was the idol of Bach, he did a lot of kilometers (sometimes walking) just for hear him.
Wonderful.
MI Piace Molto!
Excellent !! j'aime beaucoup ce trio ! merci

Racism?
Super
BELLO
I haven't heard better performance, is Buxtehude better than Bach? I think so.
Lo penso anch'io!!

5:05
And the violinist lady is unforgiving
That makes no sense.
On comprend pourquoi Bach vénérait Buxtehude.
Je pense la même chose...
