    Man, OSTs are no joke.
Here we have a piece from the legend Masaru Yokoyama (composer for Your lie in April, Fruits Basket (2019), and Horimiya soundtracks), who wrote the gorgeous soundtrack for Kuzu no Honkai/Scum's Wish back in 2017. It's been nearly two years since I watched this series, but getting to experience the music again after so long was an absolute treat. Of course, back then I wasn't really into anime for the OST (just a typical fan of sick af opening songs and nothing else), but rewatching this series recently, I realize how much extra depth and impact a good soundtrack can bring to a scene.
While I've seen people attempt to translate the title of the piece into English ("Starting Out Somehow"), I think "nantonaku" (何と無く) carries so much more meaning.
"Why do you keep trying so hard making RUclips covers when you never get onto the algorithm?"
    "Nantonaku."
"Why do you write such long descriptions that maybe 10 people are gonna bother reading?"
    "Nantonaku."
A reason...to have no reason. Isn't that quite the concept, lmfao? Anyways, let's talk about the arrangement.
Masaru Yokoyama's work typically features basic chord progressions (much like a certain famed composer for Attack on Titan owo), but he, in a feat of magic, is able to craft so many layers over these progressions that it's like constructing a lasagna from scratch when arranging. Some of the most challenging moments of arranging this piece came from the dilemma of active instruments overlapping with each other in range, making the pianist decide which parts are more important than others (and what unnecessary parts to drop), all the while maintaining the highest quality possible while including as much from the original as possible. And in this case, the cello solo after the intro ends (0:29) falls within the range of the constant rhythm in the left hand. After many takes, I finally decided on employing my right hand to play the solo cello, and when not tangled up, continue playing the ringing tones in the treble that punctuate the piece from the beginning. Playing both sections (intro and cello solo) while maintaining 1) accuracy, and 2) a perfect, euthymic state of "balance" would prove to be a great challenge to my developing musicality (can't bash your way out of this one!), but you can see the results for yourself.
The next section, then. At 1:07, the part in the right hand (that ends in the rolled chord at 1:08) was originally quiet background strings providing yet another moving layer, but I thought it appropriate to bring that movement to the forefront because it sounds so gooood. Throughout my cover, you'll find that I did play it with a more convicted sense of direction, dynamics-wise, than the original, which stayed at a mild mp to mf in the swelling sections. Even as early as 1:16, I was already playing meaty, thicc chords typically reserved for the climax, but I couldn't help myself. In a way, I did try to respect the original by not having a night and day difference in dynamics between pre-apex and climax, but it's there, I promise!
1:35 mini gliss in the left hand is the second time in two days I've put a left hand gliss in a cover, so be sure to stick around next time when I slap one in a gentle anime OST when least expected.
1:52 and onwards is my favorite section; such a beautiful transition into a quiet, "breathing" moment (as expected of Masaru-san, who does this all the time in his music), tinged with subtle drops of loneliness in the major 7th and sus voicings. The return of those glassy bell tones at 2:04 in the right hand, dancing in tandem with the replies in the bass/mids, gave me much joy to play (it almost gives off sadboi Christmas vibes for some reason).
2:19 is an original addition: why did I add this in?
    "Nantonaku."
This might be the longest description I have ever typed. At the end of the day, this video might sound like just a regular cover to you, nothing to write home about. However, just know that behind the creation and recording of this 2 1/2 minute piece, I went through ^^^^ all of those experiences. Music is really something else, ahaha.
    As always, 楽しんでくださいね。
    Louis
Oh yeah, the video clips I inserted: since this particular track always plays during, ahem, when the characters are doing s t u f f, I thought it appropriate to leave all of that out and instead place clips that might hint at what the anime's overarching storyline is about. Anyways, byeeeee

It is a beautiful cover and I love how you arranged and played it out. It is nice to hear something that is not a bandwagon being played. It brings back such memories when I watched this anime.

Music really is something else. And to an untrained ear it might not be special, but it’s often jut the tip of the iceberg. Below hides all struggles, solutions, practice and applied emotions. Since I’ve still got a long way to go, I can’t say how difficult it is for someone like you to strive close to perfection. And it seems unless the OST is popular and / or includes a half-piano-wide arpeggio, it won’t show view-wise. But you can feel it, I feel it; and I hope many others get to experience this fantastic journey of a few minutes.

Man, Kuzu no Honkai OST was the sh*t.. not surprising considering the composer also did the mythical soundtrack of Shigatsu wa kimi no uso (just noticed you mentionned it in the description, glad to see I'm not the only one writing massive blocks under my videos lmao)
You did a great job at transcribing the additional voices and your playing is impressively steady and clean ! Might actually go back to Kuzu no Honkai OST myself now haha

I was actually listening to this in the background and couldn't help but notice how intricate the piece was. A second watch with the video and your absolutely delightful description confirmed my suspicions. The cello solo in particular just turned out so amazing, with really fun to watch hand crossings; you really managed to add another layer here without disrupting the illusion! All around though, the flow and the sound is just incredible! You also mention more pronounced dynamics, which I have gradually become more and more of a sucker for. Playing the piano made me realize and notice that so many songs stick in a too narrow dynamic range thus leaving me unsatisfied more often than not due to untouched potential. Why should us pianists not use the opportunity (both as an artistic tool for arranging, but also because the piano just feels like it's constantly calling for it) and let loose in that regard? I guess the answer would be "Nantonaku."

Third listen here bud: Really unfortunate the mass of your audience don't appreciate this as much as seasonal/speedruns. We've had convos on this quite a few times but this is what I really consider art. You've really reached a level where you played each note with amazing intent and care, and I could both hear, see, and feel the intricacy in touch and selection of the voices you choose to cover. Again, really good job. I may be conceited in saying this but I think this really closed what little of a gap there was between us two as artists.

    • @HayashiStudios
      @HayashiStudios  2 года назад +1

I'm honored to hear you say that, seeing 1) how many more years of experience you have over me, and 2) your own intense, yet also gentle and wise sense of musicality that makes me come back every time (vs the roster of dime and dozen anipianists we see coming in every month). Unfortunately, this video will probably never be seen by more than a few hundred people, but this ultimately represents me far more than any of those bland, technically exciting songs on my channel.

This is a different kind of virtuosity. I found that I had a much harder time pulling this one off than all of my other covers. Only an experienced musician would know that being brash and loud is easy, but maintaining this level of balance? It's a feat. This is my best cover as of now.

Bro, like, I woke up earlier (Ik crazy right, I'm still alive)
And after showering I looked at my phone and was really just like "YOOO wow I can't wait to listen to this and damn, look at this gorgeous Thumbnail!"
Then I was like: "...It's from Louis?"
I literally thought I was dreaming
Like, you only upload Chinese BOTW rip off covers
I was looping the shit out of this, failling nofap and what not lmfao
Like, the sheer quality, musicality, the gliss, the 4975-letters-long description (I have read just now) , all was perfect.
Like, I almost wrote a comment before I would have school
But I was like "bruh you gotta still read the desc. and no way you're going to write what you want on that shitty phone screen"
And man, I don't think I have ever read such a poetic and passionate desc.
Usually, it's just the casual "Here's Cover 'X' and I used that and it's really nice yada yada pls kill me"
    Okay not that bad :kekw:
But here it's like: "What is the meaning of life? There is no and so I'm going to create one"
    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
And also, your placement of the outro (the Komi san thing) also made me horny to finally watch your cover. It's also pretty nice
So like, whether you cringed ultra hard at my comment or not, I just wanted to say that I think this is your best cover so far
