Why this $6,400 Hasselblad is the slowest camera I’ve ever loved

- Hasselblad’s latest digital camera, the 907X 50C, is a 740 gram metal box that can serve as a stand alone medium format digital camera or as a digital back for Hasselblad V System cameras made from 1957 onwards. At $6,400 it is the smallest digital medium format body Hasselblad has ever made, but its unique form factor takes time and patience to get used to.

What is the slowest camera you still love?
I don’t remember
nokia 3310 camera
1940s ensign ful vue
The Mamiya RZ67
Fuji GX 680, studio medium format film camera, just compare the size with a modern dsrl.
Turns out that this camera might be …a hassle to operate. I couldn’t resist.

That joke was terrible. Very blad.

I own one, find it makes me go back to when I started learning photography in 1977, everything was manual and no post correction. So every single shot needs to be calculated and you really need to know what you want. When you get a good shot, so it is so rewarding. I haven’t touched my Sony A7r4 since I got this last November. I’m keeping this baby for my remaining life.
U rich
I've had a similar experience. I recently bought a Nikon FM3 -- manual everything. An FM I bought circa 1979 was my first real camera, and I made some pictures that I'm pretty happy with. But it was stolen after a couple of years, and I've "upgraded," gone digital, etc, and in the process got away from the time and intentionality that preparing a shot in the old days required. When I got the FM3 not long ago, I had to re-learn taking the time to calculate exposures, think through composition and so on. It's been a good experience.
So for like another two years then?
gimme your A7 lmao, anyway, thats good to hear that you be ablo to relive the experienced of photography back in the days.
I know nothing about cameras and have no intention of purchasing any but still found this video extremely interesting.
agree
I feel that when you‘re comparing cameras and their “depth fall-off and background blur”, you should really tell us which lenses you’re using on each of the cameras. I know this is not a photography or camera review channel, but still
This is a great note! Thanks, bud ~ for all the comparison shots between the 907X, A7c, and iPhone I was using the Hasselblad 80mm F/1.9 on the 907X and the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L (with a metabones EF - E mount T adapter) on the A7c.
-b
She did preface the comparison that it doesn’t really make sense because of the sensor size difference. Sensor size does not directly affect DoF, but it can change the circle of confusion. Long story short, the math is quite complicated, but even if DoF and viewing angle remain constant, the look of the image can be different.
@@MusicBent Yes, but focal length and aperture matter anyways. A photo @90mm f1.2 on medium format would of course have a blurrier background than a photo @16mm f4 on full frame, but that wouldn't be caused by only the difference in sensor size.
I think Becca's 90mm f1.9 lens on the CFV sensor (crop factor 0.79, so about 71mm FF equivalent) and the 50mm f1.2 used on the A7c are reasonably close to make an at least somewhat accurate comparisons on the photo's looks though - that just wasn't evident from the video alone.
@@TheVerge Thanks for the swift reply! :) I'm going to assume those shots were then taken wide open @f1.9 and 1.2 respectively. Hope to see more of your reviews in the future!
@@TheVerge Really great video , I also loved the colour science in Hasselblad more iPhone. So, it's a request - Can you please compare this Hasselblad camera with OnePlus 8pro so that we can know the difference & clarity of photos we will get in OnePlus 9 pro.
Always a pleasure to watch Becca's reviews, feels like an upbeat friend giving you their opinion :)
I felt like the review style reflected the feel of the camera; slow, tempered. The pictures absolutely blew me away though. I wish I had 10k to blow on this camera and a couple of lenses. Life would be amazing.
It won't make a difference. get a cheaper Sony used, and fast lenses, and you will get similar pictures. It's the person behind the camera that's doing the magic
@@rasmysamy2145 It's not always about the outcome, it's also about the experience for some photographers.
@@rasmysamy2145 yeah this pro photographer proved that. Used expensive hassleblad and iPhone 13. Then used lighting like he always does to make both look so great. Just if you zoom in you have no imagine quality on iPhone.
@@rasmysamy2145 kind of true, though a person with great ideas AND resources to have better equipment will also produce magic of that much better quality. Even the Sony was a (relatively) expensive system when it came to being a reality.
This cameras shoots videos that have a lofi vibe I actually like it
Yeah I loved the look of it tbh. I would use it for video way more than they anticipated
yeah totally... like an indie film or something
get an entry level crop sensor camera for that 😀
Lol sreen shattered, my smartphone tempered glass has better shipping protection than Hasselblad.
You nailed it! The slowness is THE benefit! Step back , compose , shoot! Had it for a year now! Wouldn’t leave home without it! An amazing piece of equipment! 👍🏻❤️
somehow the shaky cam clips felt really... Intimate? They were a great addition to the video!
Yes!! It looked very warm and nostalgic to me. I would love to see a movie or music video shot in that camera
I feel like if you used this camera during winter time with snow fall out the window, those shots would be perfect for an intro video. Like you said those shots definitely feel intimate, maybe even raw/natural?
That retro style design man 🔥
It's not retro is more like 50s body which is great but it would be great if they keep retro style buttons cuz it becomes much easier to use
I like Becca as a presenter. I feel that she knows what is she talking about when compared to some other channels were when they talk about photography their lines could sound artificial and have a lack of flow. Becca's presenting, when speaking about photography and sound devices, feels natural, has great flow and it is very informative. Keep 'em coming...
Hasselblad is like a rolls royce, it's dosent need to be fast
But a Rolls Royce is fast
Rolls royce is a super fast car . 🚗 fyi
@@arbazkhalid7906 they aren't known for their speed and in the grand scheme of high end vehicles they aren't that fast they are designed with comfort first
@@Adrian-jn9ov missin the point here lol
@@arbazkhalid7906 no rollls royce are not famous in speed like ferrari and bugatti
The slowest camera I've ever loved, most heartbreaking unboxing, where is this review going? Well, it went on to be the most charming comprehensive review ever! The reviewer is also engaging!
A new supervillain origin story probably.
Even though I didn't use this camera I can feel the slow & elegant way to capture photos. Very good video
That red jacket shot in the snow was like you stepped inside Fargo!
yeah what an incredible shot coming from that camera!
I have used this camera and it is the most beautiful experience, it makes me pay alot more attention to everything I shoot. Sometimes slowing down creates more… and that exposure button. It’s one of those things, if you have the money then you buy it.
love yuor comment man, thats the way it goes for some things slow and appreciative of the process
As a person who loved his old c body film camera I'm glad to see an energetic young photog who so nails the art. To cherish every single frame as you put it is exact. For me that is what the art is about. Nicely done!
I purchased the 907X with grip & view finder back in January. Being a user of Hasselblad in the film years I still have most of the old equipment. I use the other lens regularly with the adaptor. I love the camera and what it does, slow yes. It gives you as chance to rethink and get it right more times. Colors are fantastic as is the total clarity. I would buy one again after using it and living through the learning curve.
*Laughs in 4x5 film.* I’m definitely interested in this camera though.
I feel your pain :D
Probably one of the best reviews of any piece of camera gear I have seen on RUclips. Great work.
Great job Becca!
It’s not a guy?
Watching this is crazy. I started my photography career 20 years ago with a film Hassy and the back looked exactly the same….well, except the digital s teen instead of the film door. I still have PTSD (lol) due to changing the film in the middle of critical points of every wedding reception. Nerve racking. Anyway, great review as usual! 🤙🏼
I really loved your winter night shots. I love this Hasselblad, but I just bought a camera so that would be crazy. This is my dream camera. I also realize that electronic cameras have a very short life before they become completely obsolete. If I was going to buy a bespoke camera like this, I'd get a completely mechanical film version.
I would listen to you for hours even without understanding a word you said.
😂😂😂😂 Me too!!
😂😂😂
It's also interesting how the A7C is seen as "keeping up with the Hasselblad" (6:30). The A7C was roughly 1/4 of the price and came out at around the same time. So is it the A7C that's "keeping up" or is it the Hasselblad that's taking similar photos to a much cheaper camera, exposing it as a device that's charging more than it's worth? The way I see it, it's the Hasselblad that's falling behind.
indeed, to me it seems like an inferior camera, the swedish brand may call it self superior and just for "the best" but history has proven them wrong, Canon, Sony, Leica,Nikon, they all prove them wrong.
Well, she didn't say that this video isn't sponsored.. Who knows.. I'd say it's just an AD.. They took the money for the AD, but at the same time showed that SONY is better lmao.
@@harunlisic LOL she betrayed them open haha!
The music in this is just 😌😌😌 my word!!
I don't know if I love you or hate you. But I know one thing, I love your videos and can't stop watching them. You're really different and that's something I like in your videos.
If you own a Hassi, it's usually not your only camera. I got the sister Hassi X1D (same sensor, same speed, different box) especially BECAUSE it's so slow, BECAUSE it slows me down. Sounds weird. Works like a charm. If I need speed shooting I use my Fujifilm …
My good old Canon 5D mk2 could also be considered as quite slow with hardly any automation and outdated autofocus system, but it is still a lot of fun to use it.
It’s still more than enough for what I do and I can’t afford anything new at that level of quality…
5D Mark II is a legend. Medium format territory in regards of quality. I wouldn't sell it!
That thing is a thing of beauty.
Yup. Ten months later and I’m still back to enjoying this video
Thank you. This is the best review i have seen on Hasselblad. I own one with 45 P and 80 mm f1.9.
Perfect quote: “I can’t live on this island forever”
I remember getting to hold a $20,000+ digital Hasselblad at a trade show many years ago - never have I been so terrified of dropping something.

@@TheVerge Oh, I see! It's already in works. Thanks in advance.
4 (four) ads during a 9 minute video?! Really The Verge? Completely disrupted the enjoyment and quality of Becca's excellent video.
Hasselblads colors are so refreshing and punchy but that too in a realistic and good way . I bet everyone would love it
One minute silence for those people who requested to compare hasselblad with iphone camera😐
Why ?
@Danilo but the iPhone still can record great videos
@Danilo tbh from what I saw in the quick sample here it wasn't thatttt much worse. I felt it was breezed over too quickly
@@supaahflyy iPhones record phenomenal video footage but the actual camera will win

The best comparision you could have done!, a 907X, an iPhone 12 Pro Max and a Sony A7c, amazing video! Congrats!
Man that camera is gorgeous
I am doing nude art photography. I had a Hasselblad 500C (from 1956) wich I used up until 4 years ago... and it stil works flawlessly... Now I have a "newer" one.... A hasselblad 403 CW from 1991... and yes.. I consider it new (and not only me) :) Of course they are film cammeras, but I would NEVER use a normal digital camera instead.... Having this digital cammera would be a dream... but yeah... price is a pain. But do not wory... even the one from 1956 is stil valued at 1000+ USD... and the 503 one... I guess I could swing it for 2.5k$ ... so yeah... considering all this... the 6.5k is not even that much.... for a Hasselblad :)
I've got a 501CM collecting dust because it's such a pain to deal with the film these days. I'd love to update it with this! I think people like me that already own the film version will be very tempted if there wallets allow it.
It’s weird to think Becca once did something else than this. She’s amazingly good at this. She needs her own channel.
Iive downloaded this into my phone and watched this review so many times! The cinematography was so good on this one. Like, I love it so much! The sound design was 💙💙, the b-roll was so good. The colours... ugh!
That shutter sound👌🏽
I learned a really cool trick today wit this - I shoot automotive on an H6D 100c and getting the overhead shots is tricky, even with a WL finder so I tried turning this little baby upside down, flipping out the screen for a downward angle view knowing that I would have to flip it in post - oh no you don't - it corrects the image automatically!!!!! Cool thing
No face recognition! I love it! Hasselblad should use it as a marketing slogan.
Becca’s reviews are just fantastic .
I find it an amazing camera! every shot you show was amazing colors and depth. Amazing piece of technology.
When clients start to pay more for a professional photographer like myself, I don’t think I be getter one soon, great video very nicely done!
This camera looks so beautifully retro. I'd love to play around with one for a few days.
The way you explain everything about this camera makes me think that I want one!!!
Always a great day when Becca shows up in my feed!
And Becca...ur the fastest verge host we’ve ever loved :’)
The very first thing I always do when I get a new camera is to turn the shutter sound off. But this one just sounds like…*chef‘s kiss*
Who else is excited for what Hasselblad can bring to the OnePlus 9 series. My expectations just went up after this video.
✋
Him: They all move all Faster
Everyone: Ayo, Pauseeeeeee
Slowest camera I still love is a tie between my 907x and my 501c. Both are with me all the time. And both take forever to do anything. But I’ve never enjoyed photographing more than with these slow cameras.
DELICIOUS treatise of the product. Thank you!
The essence of using a large film camera. That's exactly what you were describing lol I will say it is extremely refreshing and super rewarding when you get your photos back.
Said you didn’t want to buy the $700 upgrade handle but then 2:05 says differently haha
This video feels like a „its you and not me“- Moment when breaking up 😁
Love the colors from the hasselblad. On point.
you say that you don't mind the image 'grain' using a high ISO in low light, but what you're referring to is digital noise, not grain. Image grain is an optical texture of processed photographic film. Digital images can only attempt to mimic the appearance of analogue film, and not very convincingly either
I love your presence, presentation and energy. Not some negging camera blogger BS.
What a beautiful review. Thank you! I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Ugh this sounds like it was so satisfying and enjoyable to use, I’d love to try a camera like this someday.
I love the hip shot
The production and camera work on this video was top notch!
Becca your photos.. they're... mesmerising 😍
Your summary is spot-on! For this of us who take a more deliberate approach to setting up our compositions this camera screams to us! Wish I could afford it though. Maybe I missed it but I think this would be a tremendous landscape camera - especially for this who are already used to shooting off a tripod. I'd love to have this camera, or even the 907C.
Best Hasselblad video on RUclips so far.
I'm in love with Swedish products. Hasselblad joins that list
Great video Becca!
You are such a breath of fresh air! Thanks for your articulate, knowledgeable and charming 907x review. I bought one! Well, I swapped a Monochrom Leica for one. Keep it iup!
I have an M10M, but this is tempting.
Such an amazing camera. Slowest camera? There’s many. I prefer manual focus film cameras so the 907x is more than quick enough for anything I do. It’s a unique camera in a sea of samey digital cameras that all look the same, all work the same. So happy it exists.
I’ve tried the a7rIV, specs packed. Yet when I see this, I see a new way of photography.
funkiest lil camera I have ever played with I had a 907X and an X1DII to play with for a couple of weeks ended up getting the X1DII with the 35-75 lens
neat retro design!
The guy on Instagram requesting an iPhone comparison because it's the only camera they know anything about, actually made me laugh.
Hasselblad Colors are absolutely incredible 🤩
Great review. Your enthusiasm is infectious. And I'm not even that into photography.
the point about "taking a step back and thinking about the composition before pressing that shutter button" really got me! What a perspective!
Looks Super premium
Great video.. great job
May want to try the Fujifilm GFX 100S. Not a slow camera, better lens choices, more megapickles.
every picture taken is ravishing omg
Damn, gave me crazy goosebumps at the end!! Great review!
The quality of this video is over the top
I love the RED color in the Pics .AMAZING

"There is a grip you can buy for an additional $729" - I replayed this part 5 times to make sure I heard it right.
I don't know wht am i doing here , but it was fun listening to you becca.
Kudos for the intro/ It's just perfect for these days.
jeez those sounds that it made were like asmr
I'd kill for a cheaper full frame version. I'd stick old manual focus lenses on it and chill
this is the cheaper version lol i was looking at the more expensive ones from this brand and they were in the 30k range
In art school in England I had a Rollie SL66 (like a traditional Hasselblad) and I just want to point out that the form factor makes you slow down and “Compose in camera”
The design is unique and i love it.
