I agree completely! Yes, you should learn the note names to be able to identify them individually, but you don't read them individually when playing. Recognising intervals and common phrase shapes (and rhythmic patterns) is so much faster! Great advice.

Thanks Katharina! It’s fun to break this idea down and put it into words - I don’t think this is spoken about often enough 😄

This is ever so helpful!! I'm the type of player you mentioned, who usually only learns challenging pieces from sheet music, and then I memorise it so I don't even use the sheet music anymore. It's a good thing I still have my beginner books laying about - they'll be great for sheet reading practice! Thank you 🙏🏻✨

Yes, learning the intervals vs where they are...HUGE! I’m not there yet, but know it would make a huge difference!

5:05, "take *simple* pieces..." I was recently listening to Dr. Stephen Krashen talk about language acquisition, stressing interest-led "comprehensible input, " and I wondered if that would apply to music. And here it is - it does!

I play the piano but I found your video helpful, thanks! It is true you have to change to the right sight reading mindset. When I’m too conscious about every little detail, I find it goes much less smoothly. Another tip I got from a different video is: when you run into a chord and you’re not sure you’re going to land on all the right notes, just play one or two notes of the chord but keep playing non stop!

YES!would be amazing if you can have a sight reading traing course with daily practice and learning materials about it. Beside intervals, I think a lot times a little understanding on chords would also be helpful since those chord progressions are similar to “vocabulary” in our language :)

Really helpful. Thank you. I'd love to take a course on reading music. I'm pretty solid on the G-clef, but the bass clef is sllllooooowwwww.

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  2 года назад +1

Glad it was helpful! The bass clef is often harder to learn, but it’s just because we spend less time reading the notes because often the left hand part is simpler and there’s not a lot happening. If you spend some extra time reading and playing through the bass clef of lots of different new pieces, you’ll catch up and it won’t feel so hard 😃

Thank you for this video! Yes a course would be very helpful. I still write out letters and memorize songs. Oftentimes, I am singing the letters silently to myself with the tune. 🤭

I know I stepped away from the heart for a while because I was frustrated not being able to read the music as fluently as I thought I should be able to. I had a friend who is a music teacher for the public school system and I picked up the recorder. What I quickly realized is that once I actually identified the notes as you mentioned identifying the letters and word I could read music in my mind knew exactly which fingering I needed to play the music. My mind not only helping me with the fingering but in my mind also could identify the note. I'm going to go back to the harp which means I'm going to be starting a little bit back at the beginning. But I'm hoping by playing the note identifying it saying it will do a similar thing as it did for the recorder. When I first took up the harp I was just memorizing fingerings and once I had the peace memorized I didn't look at the music any further. Thanks for the video. I'm hoping it's not going to be too painful for me to get back to playing my harp.

Thank you for this. I appreciate any help to be a better harp player. May I also add, I have difficulty with placing ahead. I seem to place as I am playing along instead of placing the whole bracket on the overlapping brackets. Would appreciate a course on the sheet music reading as well as any suggestions to help with that too. Thank you so much. Have a wonderful Christmas ❤

Yes! Would have to have a course on reading music 😊 Because I played the flute and usually in the upper register, I even have trouble identifying notes on the treble clef after B 😬
I know it’s laziness and practice will help, just impatient 😉
    Thanks Christy Lyn! 🤍

Very helpful video thank you! Before seeing this video I thought it was good that I'm playing with an app to teach me the names of notes but now I see it will be more efficient to play directly on my harp from now on. Thanks so much, very excited to be on this journey with you :) I would love to learn sheet music from you as I'm not sure what some of the icons/symbols on sheets mean, like an empty note that's just an outline for example or brackets etc. Please let me know if there is a resource your recommend for that.

Hi Sauda! Once Carrie is up and running with creating courses, one of the first things I want to do is to create a series of courses to help people with reading sheet music. I might actually start by creating workshops, and then later film courses from the same content. I want to make sure that I help in the best possible way, so I’ll definitely be asking for a lot of feedback. Hopefully you can be a part of giving me feedback so I can gradually create the best courses to help get fluency in sheet music reading! I really want to help and I think my approach will make a big difference ❤️

Great, let me know if that helps! I know there are many people struggling with this, but the good thing is it can definitely get better! We’ve just finished a 6 week program “Unlocking Sheet Music”, helping harpists to read sheet music fluently. And many of them had great breakthrough with recognising notes faster now, and no longer needing to write in the letters 😅🙌🏻 See how you go with applying the things in this video, but if you’d like more input, we’ll be doing “Unlocking Sheet Music” again at some point, so you could join the waiting list to hear about it here: www.learningtheharp.com/unlocking-sheet-music/

Harpist spend way to much time on one hand. In other words they spend more time on the right hand but then the left hand go unnoticed. And that can be a bit of frustration when learning to play even simple songs. It takes more then just reading intervals rhythm has to play a part in learning to read music.
