I think that is the point, that nobody in the Empire knew that fact. They all assumed Vader was on board the ship when it crashed. Nobody knew except for a few people that Vader went onto the Death Star with his son and they're all dead except for Luke. It's not like Luke made some announcement to the entire galaxy.
Remember: If they take it down, it's canon!
