Really enjoying your trip. Riding Route 66 is on my bucket list. I’ll probably do it a section at a time. I’m from Sapulpa, OKlahoma, can’t wait to see if you show much of my hometown. Thanks for sharing your ride
I've always wondered why they don't make panniers and front bags more aerodynamic considering how much it means on a bicycle. They make cars and trucks more aerodynamic when it means very little. Also if I do a trip across america I believe I will start on the west coast and travel east as it seems that about 80% of the time the winds blow from the west - southwest. Sometimes that might not be an option though. So san diego to the northeast would be cool. Start in the winter in and stay along the border until spring.
I knew there was a wind penalty heading west but it was a lot more than I expected. I started in August and didn't want to be riding across the north Midwest and Allegheny Mountains when it got cold. I could have stayed south but wanted to include the C&O, GAP, my hometown of Bettendorf, the Mississippi River and Route 66. My route was about 60% longer than the shortest cross country route.
I live in OKC, gonna start a long term indefinite bike tour next year, I was thinking about just poppin on Rt 66 west, then up the coast, then great divide south back into Rt 66 to home for a break then back north on rt66, should keep me a little busy in retirement if my health allows it
I visited your National Memorial, Cowboy Museum, Brick City, and a couple great restaurants (Cattlemens' and Trappers) when I was in your hometown and had a great time. And the Lamb Fries weren't bad lol. I'd recommend that you just do your ride and it will keep you healthy in your retirement :).

Missouri -> *Misery?*
At least going up the hills when it's over 100 degrees, but that's the challenge :)
