Nemo in Latin means: no one or nobody. Troy is playing a low whistle. You should also check out their performance of Nemo from the Wembley 2015 show - Troy not only plays the low whistle but also near the ending he plays guitar with an e-bow that changes the whole vibe of the song - major goosebumps!

This song is based on the Jules Verne novel '20.000 Leagues under the Sea' in which Captain Nemo (the man with no name) searches for his true self on his travels on his submarine The Nautilus. Tuomas identified himself with this character as he always has been longing for his childhood as comes forward in many of the Nightwish songs he has written.
Yeah, not just the way Floor falls off that note, but the way it transitions into the beautiful piano section from Tuomas, before ramping the energy back up again. Love that part!

This song is legendary on its own right , and this song was my first Nightwish song that I heard back in 2004 .
Also this song can be heard in the ending credits of the 2005 film The Cave.
"Nemo" is the eighth single Of the Nightwish album Once (fifth studio album). A big-budget video was made for the song. The director was Antti Jokinen, who had previously worked with Shania Twain, Celine Dion and Eminem. The video was number one on MTV Brasil Video Chart. The song was nominated for the Kerrang! Award for Best Single. Although Nightwish already enjoyed a solid fan base in Europe and South America by the time of the single's release, it is considered their breakthrough song since it helped them reach a wider audience.
Tuomas Holopainen has stated that the title is Latin for "nobody" or "no name" and the song is based on his occasional feelings of being lost, longing for the past and feeling nameless.

It's maybe already been said, but the wind instrument Troy is playing is the low whistle. Like you say, the layering really draws you in. Almost every time I listen to Nightwish compositions, I notice something else in the layers.
Excellent! In more recent versions of this song, you may encounter Troy (the whistle guy) playing the same melodic line on an electric guitar with an e-bow. This band never ceases to amaze! Thanks!

Nemo is Latin for "No one" or "No name". This is why the fish was named Nemo as well. You are hearing Troy playing that melody on the low whistle. An old traditional instrument. This was Nightwish' biggest hit song from 2004.

That's the work of Tuomas the composer, to get fluity petudy echo the rest. Thats why Emppus solos are deliberate and scripted just like in an orchestra. There ain't so much leeway as in other metal bands. And that is one reason they are so great 🤘

Great reaction yet again! You mentioned you were on the mission to find a Nightwish song that you would not like. Well, Nightwish has those rougher/less stellar tracks too, specially when they started out - as most bands do. Thing is that when composer/keyboardist Tuomas started to find his signature sound and musical style in early 2000's, and specially when band performing live, they have pretty much hitting their A-game since. This Wacken 2013 concert is testament to that. Also well worth checking out is live concerts of Tampere 2015, Wembley 2015 and Buenos Aires 2018. Some awesome new tracks awaits you on those too. With Nightwish the guitar solos are never shredding just to be shredding. They always fit the song and they're always just the right amount. They're just exactly what the song needs, no more and no less. It's one of the reasons I love this band. Emppu can shred with the best of them but it's not about taking the spotlight. It's about the music, the song as a whole.

Song is Tarja era, from the 2004 album, Once, before Troy started playing with NW, so his Irish Low Whistle here is an addition to the song.

The genius of this song is it sounds great with Tarja, it sounds great with Floor, it sounds great acoustically done, it sounds great as a faster rock version by Tim Akkerman as he did on Beste Zangers. That’s a sign of a well written song.

Great reaction mate. This is the first Nightwish song I ever heard and I couldn't believe how well the operatic vocals worked so well with metal. Hooked ever since! Not many people recommend this but check out Dead Gardens (remastered 2016)
