    This game is probably the _definitive_ reason that I consider gaming when I was a kid so much better than it is today. Absolutely _no_ kid growing up today will ever experience anything like what me and thousands of other gaming kids felt back when Mario 64 first landed- the absolute thrill and sense of pure awe at being given a character who responds so smoothly and precisely while traversing such a vast and deep 3D environment. There had never been ANYTHING like this before! Sure, games today are more polished and better-looking and have investigated new gameplay ideas, but what do modern gamers have to look forward to from big new releases? The graphics are going to be even _more_ shiny? No, you just had to be there to see gaming _evolve._

    I still hear "So long, gay Bowser!" whenever Mario throws him off the edge.

    • @Helvetica_Scenario
      @Helvetica_Scenario 7 лет назад +7

      It's what most people heard, even back in the day. It's basically Charles Martinet trying to give Mario a stereotypical Italian accent. "So longhe, Bowser". The sound technician recording the line should have listened to it and immediately said, "Nope" and had him do another take without the over the top accent.

    No game captured my attention like this game.
    I was shopping with my mom and went to Toy's 'R' Us to kill time. Also I had 100 bucks that I was going to layaway (I grow up poor, always worked for my consoles as a kid) a Playstation.
    They had a demo station of Super Mario 64. Months before it was out.
    It's a MEEE MARIO!
    25 stars later, I forgot about putting money on a Playstation (got one when FFVII hit, a month after and everyone spoiled the big twist for everyone else) and reserved a copy and release day ticket for the N64.
    What a awesome game, and best 3D game of it's time, hands down. It was not the first 3D game, but NOTHING controlled liked. So damm smooth and and responsive. 3D games up to that point where kinda clunky and stiff to control. Once I hit the Sunken Ship and the music for Dire, Dire, Docks come on, I was sold. Very few games have put a smile on my face the whole time I played.
    Almost as cool as how I first saw Metriod: Was checking out the apartments we just moved to. In a dark empty game room/clubhouse. (yes! there used to be arcade machines at the pool at apartments). A lone Playchoice 10 cabinet sat in the room. On flipped the title screen with the theme music kicking in loud.

    • @thestripedmenace
      @thestripedmenace 7 лет назад +4

      Stadium ARTs Don't you think Sonic should be covered on a later episode of the series, since his first game was released in 1991, *three* years into the Genesis' lifespan? :V

    • @mbe102
      @mbe102 7 лет назад

      Well thats why I said Genesis Does, as Blast Processing was the Marketing Phrase used when Sonic the Hedge was released, not necessarily when the Genesis itself was. Most people consider the 'real' launch of the Genesis from Sonic on. When it really started to gain ground against Nintendo. But its semantics at the end of the day.

    Please do more N64 Works. I just discovered this channel, and I’m loving it, but N64 was my favorite console of Nintendo’s. There was just a level of innovation and experimentation on the platform, even despite there already being a couple of 3D consoles around by the time of its release.

    • @JeremyParish
      @JeremyParish  5 лет назад +2

      I hope to do more, but N64 games are MUCH more larger and more time-intensive than games for older systems, which makes it difficult for me to work them into my schedule. Once I've completed Virtual Boy I'll look at N64 again.

    It's funny the N64 complaint was cartridges over CDs and its limitations. Forward to 2018, flash ROMS are a lot cheaper to produce now and more capacity than BluRay media. With the Switch, ‘cartridges’ (along with downloadable) games have returned.

  • @niespeludo
    @niespeludo 7 лет назад

    Such a quality video as always Jeremy. One thing I'd like to mention, I'm surprised at how you brought many of the inspirations that brought Mario 64 together as a game but skipped over Donkey Kong ('94 on the GameBoy). Both the missions, 7 stage structure, red coins and the hint names for chapters came from Yoshi's Island as you mention; but half of Mario's acrobatic moveset was first used and explored in DK94 for GB. Sideflips and Backflips (or well...inertia induced moves for higher skilled players and the easy alternative for more precision and control) were started there. The way the Triple jump works is very reminiscent of the triple flips in DK94 as well. The developers for it? Shigeru Miyamoto's own team. There are moves that come from this game that are still being re-used in the latter 3D Mario games such as the spinning on wires. This is without a doubt the origin of "Acrobatic Mario" as we know him and the game is so overlooked that most people don't even remember it. A "launch" title for the Super Gameboy as well. It'd be an interesting revisit some day to add something extra as well. The same people who developed the game went on to develop both Yoshi's Island and Mario 64 in quick succession, reason for which the evolution of many things culminated on 64 (part of the reason it's so good).

    • @JeremyParish
      @JeremyParish  7 лет назад +2

    3:15 Since when did the Super Famicom use a 6502?
    4:25 I used to think the lack of a sound processor was a problem, but in retrospect after having talked to some of the people at SGI I realized it was pretty standard by then. That's not a disadvantage, just a choice.

    • @TheMaskarad
      @TheMaskarad 6 лет назад +3

      Super Famicom is based on a 65C816 which is a boosted 6502. That made its base architecture very similar to its predecessor NES, which made it easier to get a grip of the console's internal workings for the returning devs.

    I will disagree a bit, I see a ton of SMB3 in SM64. For one SMB3 offers more levels were backtracking a bit is encrouged then world,. Helping the levels feel more like places like SM64 later would. A simple example would be 3-7 where a vine leads to clouds with a P-Switch running back after you hit the Switch brings you to an earlier part of the level where brick blocks will have become coins and it will be earlier to get a hidden 1-up.
    Most notably 64’s Tiny Huge island takes it’s note straight from 4-6, a level where exploring the two version of it to see where different goodies are hidden is most of the fun.
    SMB3 also does more power up exclusive secrets and even levels much as 64 would require specific power up for specific stars. SMW does a little of that, but most of it is with the cape, were SMB3 spreads it around more. You have 6-7 which requires flight, 7-7 built around the starman, and then you have secrets like in 6-10 where using the fire flower and a hidden p-switch gets you the hammer suit. For me the most obvious link between SMB3 and SM64’s power up is the frog suit. It lets access hidden areas by swimming through jet streams that would otherwise push you back, much like Metal Mario in 64.

Heck even it’s levels are more branched out; sure the first few levels give off a bad first impression, but it gets better as the game progresses. Take that what you will with a grain of salt...

      @Helvetica_Scenario 7 лет назад +7

      People really need to stop using the phrase "throwing shade" as a substitute for "making fun of", "insulting", or "putting down". It's a term for when drag queens or gays use veiled insults on each other. As for why Jeremy is putting down the Saturn? Because it was a jumbled mess of processors that was hard to program for, which made developers prefer the easier to code for Playstation.

    You don't necessarily have 100 /golden/ coins in each stage - in many cases, blue coins, worth 5 regular coins apiece, are required to get up to 100 total coins (reds are worth 2 each).
    You could also just go to the Secret Slide to get a third star, so that way you'd still be on a one-course, one-star streak.

      +Gabriele Riva
      The PS1 technically supported Component cables well before the PS2 popularized it, so it's effectively the same as RGB. And Euorpean and Japanese PS1 owners can connect to their TVs using SCART and JP-21 cables, respectively, which also provide RGB output! Now, Nintendo removed RGB support in order to make character models look less jagged along with their crappy "anti-aliasing" technique that is really just a simple blur filter, and RGB would have eliminated most of it! That's the skinny of it

      Super Mario Bros. came out around the same time that Elton John's "Nikita" was CONSTANTLY on the radio, so I just read "Lakitu" with the same cadence as "Nikita." But the pun in Lackilester's name (Lakitu + lackluster) in The Thousand-Year Door only works if you read it "Lack-it-too," so I think we're canonically wrong.

    4:01 I'm about 5 years too late but here to defend the Genesis/ Mega Drive against your comment and the footage shown of Pilotwings. That game being a launch title actually was the only one containing an extra chip. It actually couldn't do that game on it's stock hardware. Genesis had 3D flight sims years before starfox or anything Nintendo did as being an 86000 cpu made almost anything that could run on an amiga could potentially work for Genesis too.

    Why don't you consider Galaxy 1 and 2 to be sequels to Mario 64?

      fireflocs I’m going by Nintendo's own taxonomy. They consider Galaxy separate from the sandbox games and introduced Odyssey as the first-ever follow-up to Sunshine.
