  • Taking a look at some Dyson Airblade hand dryers. An Airblade dB (AB-14) and original Airblade (AB-02) are completely torn down and reassembled. The AB-14's motor is also repaired after being damaged by the previous user.

    The motor is actually a single phase interior magnet pmsm. Allows for high power density. I'm wondering if you could find an asymmetry in the airgap of the motor as it has this nice starting behavior?

    Audio interference.... A few years ago I was at the 100 Club in London, where they had these in the toilets, and you could hear them breaking through into the PA system

      The PA system and the bog should be fed from their own supply. Sounds like the hand dryers were connected to the same ring circuit as the PA system.

      I mean, their lack of waste water management leaves a lot to be improved upon, and the nozels get dirty as it's hard for everyone not to touch them.

      @@Goesreallyfast the newer ones that are integrated into the sink tap I think are the way forward, they deal with the water by just draining into the sink plus theres minimal contact and youre already at the sink

    The die cast airblades used to corrode with heavy use. You would see high-traffic locations such as airports and theme parks which would have significant corrosion on the drip pan. For that reason, I am not opposed to the plastic chassis.

      Exactly this. I got two of the first generation ones for free, for no reason other than cosmetics. They were in the lobby of a very nice hotel, and they were replaced due to the corrosion making them ugly.

    Maybe they use the hall sensor to detect the absolute rotation at rest to it starts reliably

      I was wondering if the "cogging" strength was deliberate (and not so much as a side effect) so the motor at rest is in a predictable state between poles after powering down? I'm 100% guessing, as I have little to no idea what I'm talking about, unlike yourself.
      The only foundation I have for my guess is that the motor took a good while to come to rest, it seemed to oscillate quite a fair bit before coming to a complete stand still. Eddy current to position?
      As I say, not a clue. Sorry for wasting your time if you read this comment.

      Well the poles are not at 90 degree angles. The hall sensor knows where the rotor sits and thus the next pole to energize with a "+". Form there on it is either an open loop slow start of a closed loop hall feedback (I suppose open loop).

    They actually don't depend on sensing to determine motor direction. Instead they use a salient pole to ensure that the field moves in only one direction. All DDMs that I know of are open-loop. There is also active control of the drive waveform at speed, somewhat similar to the SMOOTH technology used in ST's brushless motor drivers.

    Yeay a Tesla500 video. The clear plastic so deep in the motor/turbine is an interesting choice.

      Must have been a cost thing, using a batch of contaminated transparent mix instead of any other colour, because the plastic batch has a minor colour error from being mixed with other beads. You see a lot of inner plastic parts made with multicoloured recycled plastic, that has been salvaged, extruded into beads and chopped up, and then all the odd bits of colours left over in the batches are run as interior parts where you do not care much about colour,.
      Or the plant just wanted to change colour on the moulding machine, without stopping, cooling and stripping to clean it, so swap to the die set for the inner, change the bead supply colour, and run a few thousand cycles of parts till all the old stuff has been purged out. Saves a lot of wasted plastic, and makes a saleable product, instead of a 5 hour clean cycle losing money.

      @@SeanBZA seams reasonable. My thought was that the housing might have been of polycarbonate, maybe for shatter resistance. But tbh that's mostly based on the fact that I can't remember seeing opaque polycarbonate.
      But at you say Dyson tend to make a lot of translucent parts so it would make sense for them to have some translucent wast on hand.

      @@coolfrost6 Polycarbonate is not the most easy to work with, so they would have gone with a cheaper plastic wherever possible, even if it has to be thicker. Polycarbonate for those high strength outer housing parts, then cheaper PVC or other plastic when cost is a driving factor.

      @@SeanBZA I agree that is why it strikes me as od. Correct me if I'm wrong but the only injection moulding plastics I'm familiar is PS, PET, PMMA and PC that would yield that level of translucent. Maybe also some funky versions of ABS.
      Of those I only think PC and funky clear ABS are reasonable choices.

      @@coolfrost6 Plastic front and back panels in old Hameg oscilloscopes are made of opaque polycarbonate. I remember because I wanted to repair a badly cracked one. I had to weld it with dichloromethane because it's the only suitable solvent for PC, and most adhesives don't do very well either.

    It’s quite funny that they have invested so much engineering effort to minimise the noise of the motor vibration and air compressor, while the airblade nozzles just by themsleves sounds like a f*cking jet turbine while operating... Is it just me, or they could spare a lot of expense in that department?

    I found the same with their vacuum cleaners. I had an older Dyson which finally expired after 15 years, I was very pleased with the service I got out of it. Went to replace it & was very disappointed by the construction of the current ones, they felt so flimsy. So I bought a Shark instead.

    I love how it is basically a turbocharger impeller wheel, it would be neat to try a larger version of this motor on something like the electric centrifugal (turbo) blower you did a while back. There are finally kits available for cars that do make several PSI boost. (Search cleetus electric supercharger on YT should pull it up).
    For one of these Dyson motors, at 2.6PSI that would make one hell of a Hovercraft. The RC ones I build can carry 50Lbs easily using fans that have 0.27PSI static pressure on a sheet of foam board. (See my videos)...
    As long as you are on a smooth surface and have a decent seal you dont need a lot of CFM, you could do a more compact "hoverboard".
    I was wanting to do a human rideable one, say 20 inches wide by 5 feet long for the base. I'll likely use ducted fans, but in reality I need something like 0.7psi + to have decent performance from the skirt fans.
    You could literally take a giant cardboard box cut the lid off nice and straight and duct that in and ride it.
    If you had a gaylord you could shorten perhaps?

    240v with a buck transformer down to 208v could use a standard 240v to 30v, wire the primary and secondary in series out of phase to knock the 30v off ?

    Awesome video. I think I prefer the newer design, minus the glue. However I would have used just one PCB for everything and ideally separated it from the motor, or kept it in the motor and made it easier to service like you mentioned.

      It wouldn't have enough CFM to be practical. These are more focused on pressure, which is why they look like turbo compressors.
      My leafblower produces ~400CFM, where an airblade is ~75CFM.

    Hello, I would need your help, on this motor there are 4 wires, 2 large and 2 smaller, the two large ones are permanently supplied with 230V (in France).
    I guess the two smaller ones should serve as a command. How does this command work? Thank you in advance for your answer

    I got an issue my dyson hand dryer, it works fine but starts by itself sometimes, it started happening once i replaced the casing to a new one and im thinking if there is any particular way the sensors go back on? Is it possible i might have put them in the wrong way or something?

We had one at my old office, The hand slot is soaking wet, and many people (at least in the us) just rinse their hands and then dry them off, or do a quick 6 second rub and dry off.... I don't care if it's corona, seasonal flu, mad diarrhea, Or a cold... I don't want it. that wet hand receptacle grooooooooses me out... I'll wipe my hands on my pants if air dryers are all that's available. I don't want water droplets blown all over me, and the other air drivers blow dust and "stuff" all over the bathroom.

    Looks like some of the pads on the bottom of the power transistors lifted off the board and stayed on the transistors... hate when that happens :( Or maybe it's just some leftover solder - you showed the other side of the board later and it looks fine. Still though, that's shitty to glue the components in like that.

      I noticed that too, but the pad stayed on the board somehow. It looked like it pulled it off though.

      It's probably just the remains of the topside fillet. You're fighting on a pretty steep thermal gradient to get enough heat through to the far side of the board. The suction tends to leave them behind when the thermal load is high.

    Hi Tesla500, A quick question about the motor bypass. From what I understand you are connecting the white signal wire to the black neutral wire in the cable that powers the control board, and taping off the red live wire.
    Is this correct? I'm using the motor for a low-cost air knife build and I just want to make sure ere I blow it just before installing it 😅

    I think in that older unit the filter inductor was originally on the board, using a expensive high permeability core, making it very small, but expensive. Then they went to the larger ferrite core as it would do the same filtering, but at a much lower cost per unit, even with the need for an extra assembly step to hand solder it in and hand tie it to the bracket.
    Newer one I would guess they put the coil there to get cooling for it, and also reduce envelope by using otherwise unused volume in the motor end housing. Just made it larger, slightly more expensive in copper, but then they could use a very cheap ferrite material for the core, and being larger made it easier to wind as well.

    the filter is much finer then needed to just keep debris out of the nozzle...as for the motor - makes sense to use something they already had for a different product.
    btw that motor is reason Dyson is king when it comes to consumer grade vacuums.

    BLDC rotors are often made by gluing arc-shaped magnet segments to the inner shaft, then overlaying resin-saturated carbon fibre to retain them.

    I'd be interested to see the other models too. (airblade wash+dry, airblade 9kJ, airblade V, and what the difference between the original airblade and the "airblade dB" is.) The wash+dry seems very interesting to me. (The air blade dB is for places where noise is a concern and is supposedly quieter.)

    Dude you look great 👍 Dyson stuff is incredibly well engineered, although not perfectly reliable. They seem to sell a lot of refurbished equipment, so someone is repairing it.

    You should look up solvents for conformal coatings. The ones I used removed it would leaving a trace and without damaging components

    I think another reason the higher voltage ones are cheaper is simply because far more countries use around 230V than the US 120V, including all of Europe and almost all of Asia, and Dyson's home market, the UK

    26:10 Its for filtering out both high and low frequency noise they use both, very common practice, and it can not be done by one capacitance value.

    No one can overdo something like Dyson overdoes everything. Why would you die cast something that sees no load. Could it be for noise? The plastic does the job for 1/10 the cost.
    The new model is profoundly simplified and no doubt more profitable. I get the impression that these products are developed by large teams where no one has control of the big picture.
    No one is screaming "NO THAT IS TOO COMPLICATED" when they build something out of a hundred parts.
    I see the value in the centrifugal compressor as an air pump. The main benefit of this configuration is a large pressure differential in one stage. At small diameters the RPM must be high to get the peripheral speed past M,5 where it will work. Modern motors make that practical. The rotor makes no pressure by itself it's only purpose is to accelerate the air. A structure that follows the wheel called the difuser slows the air to create pressure. Making all this quiet is likely the biggest problem. The resonant suppressor is a clever solution. I own a variety of Dyson products that work well - every one of them is a masterpiece of over engineering.

      Well, considering that these would be used in more or less public restrooms, the inclination is to make things vandal-resistant. Even the older heated electric hand dryers have heavy (often cast) housings. Of course, those dryers didn't have to deal with corrosion because they were actually evaporating the water, or at least not blowing it back into the equipment itself.

    Hi, great video. However at 34:00 you tried to predict the powerfactor from just the single trace.
    You need to compare voltage and current to get powerfactor, just the shape of the waveform will not tell you powerfactor.
    Your scope could have shown you any phase difference between line voltage and current.

    Wow, now I hate that thing more but I like it more... weird. Good job also. So the power system 'riding' the sine wave of the AC power to get the rpm's up quick would explain the loud 60 noise they make when spooling up - very interesting!!
