  • We've been doing a lot of work in Homebrew lately, but at some point you need to back it up. And then you need to restore it to a new machine. So here's a way to manually backup and restore your instance of Homebrew.

What if you already wiped the hard drive and did fresh install of the operating system? I backed up /Users folder with backblaze, so I can restore files from underneath there.

Probably not. Homebrew and its bundles aren't actually stored in the /Users folder but in another place called /usr. Similar names but different folders entirely. So if you didn't make a brew dump beforehand or copy that other folder, you'll have to start from scratch. Sorry.

@@EasyOSX Yep. I found an old brewfile from when I first got my current laptop, and I used that. It has some cruft but I think I’m set now.
Speaking of cruft, I had files in my backup that belonged to apps that went defunct 10 years ago! So, I’ll glad that I did a clean install this time. My laptop is noticeably faster now.

@majorgear1021 oh yeah, it pays to start from scratch every once in a while, especially when it comes to new machines

So I am kinda of in the same boat. We found an iMac at our thrift store for $1. It's in recovery mode and won't let me boot up to El Captain because it asks me to sign in and my Apple ID doesn't have a valid purchase of El Captain (per Apple Support), so my options are to find a time machine backup or get a family member who had El Captain so I could sign in. If I do the steps above and then put El Captain on a flash drive, does that turn it into a time machine so I can finally get the iMac to work?

I feel like this comment belongs on my El Capitan video rather than this Homebrew video. But yes, if it’s on a flash drive it shouldn’t ask you to sign into an Apple ID

Appreciate it! Yeah, I was flipping between both. I'll make sure to post the results on the other video @@EasyOSX
