      Well of course we'd love a thoroughly enveloped series onto the screen. But unfortunately the slow build up would probably make it too boring for the general audience to make the series as profitable as it could per investment hour to animate it.

    Despite me loving the whole season - i found that some parts are clearly cut and remade with less budget in mind. Be it some cut or shortened moments, less animated, more still shots. they were still great, but it's falls a bit short of first season. But they saved a lot to have better animated scenes where they mattered. Like in nanahoshi parts and in the end with sylphy.
    Nanahoshi episode was amazing, if you watch the body languages of nanahoshi and rudeus. It told such a good story, i have no idea why nobody talks about how it was animated.
    The slave market - I get it why people were upset, but It's a very nuanced thing that makes sense in universe. I think Julie part was a very hearbreaking and heartwarming at the same time, since rudy saw himself being broken at that point and he gave her a choice. And she chose to live, which for both of them - rudy as his "past" moving on, since it's clear he sees himself in julie, locked in a (mind)cage, broken and tired - and for julie, since she was given a choice over her life, instead of being a slave with no agenda.
    And Sylphy arc was a cherry on top. I love those two so much.

      i agree there was an overall reduced fidelity and there were many seasons where a bit more experienced watcher could see tons of cost cutting measures. What wierds me out is if they are saving some budget for cour 2 or season 1 did below expectation and they overall got a much reduced budget. Or is it a talent issue? idk

    In the beast girl capture part, all i was doing was laughing at Pursena's constant attempts to throw Linia under the bus and Linia kept dropping herself in it, look its Mushoku Tensei this kind of thing is part of the show you either run with it or jump off and i'm going to run with it.
    (Though i do want to stroke Pursena's ears they look so cute and fluffy)

    it was your intensity that made me pick-up MT in the first place an I ended up bingeing the first season just before episode 0 came out (thank you for that) I very much agree that many of the key episodes could have been expanded, but I would not trade a single second of the Sylphie "reveal" for them. I'm thrilled to hear you are doing better,(spring will come soon) Stay safe, as warm as possible, love from Texas

    I have 3 thoughts on this season overall.
    The intro is beautiful and the fact that this season starts to give us a proper intro feels like the studio saying that THIS is the point where the story begins. And yeah, if you think about it the story up to this point is basically setting up the chess pieces for what’s to come.
    I’ve been hyped soooo long to see my favorite two moments of volume 8 which were the Redworm Dragon fight and the entrance exam. I think the show peaked at this point. It was beautifully presented.
    Finally, all the controversies this season are just people judging from the high horse moral viewpoint. People forget that this is a work of fiction and most importantly it’s the story of someone who was a shut in for 20 years. Rudeus is not a culture warrior who’s past life was spent analyzing the injustices of life. He is a man with the mind of a teenager. He knows what’s right and what’s wrong but this second life is his chance to actually grow from this eternal horny teenager state he’s been trapped in. As an adult he will make changes to the world as adults do. With action, not tantrums.

    Another thing that Mushoku Tensei does well, that no one has do yet, thought eminence in shadow do come close. Is that it gives the Beast Race their own culture that effects the story and the character. When Rudeus calls out Linia for say "Meow" like a child and she gets angry, it shows how much he understands their culture.

    • @NatalieXHunter
      @NatalieXHunter  9 месяцев назад +4

      Yeah, it was well established by him having studied their language and stayed with their tribe for months in season 1 that he knows how they work, and that if he could get them to submit to him they wouldn't cause any problems because that's how they organize themselves.

    • @andrewnelson4148
      @andrewnelson4148 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@NatalieXHunter I also forgot to say that Mushoku Tense has set standard for what Beast Race are in modern isekai to the point that even Eminence in Shadow copies not only the culture, but also the magic system. But in the defense of Eminence in Shadow it did give the Beast Race (Therianthrope in Eminence in Shadow) a name unlike Mushoku Tensei.

    • @NatalieXHunter
      @NatalieXHunter  9 месяцев назад

      Well, Therianthrope is just a word from mythology. In Shield Hero when beast people like Sadeena use their more beasty forms those are also called their Therianthrope forms - it's not specific to Eminence. I do like the beast race in Eminence though, Delta is my favorite.

    • @andrewnelson4148
      @andrewnelson4148 9 месяцев назад

      @@NatalieXHunter On the subject of Delta, have you noted that she runs just like Ghislanine does from Mushoku Tense. Also, Delta seems to us Beast Race Scream magic in epsiode 6 of season 2 of Eminence in Shadow. And on the subject of Beast Race what was the magic that Pursena was about to use during her fight with Zanoba and Rudeus? Why does she have to draw blood? Are not all beast race magic scream based?

  • @andrewnelson4148
    @andrewnelson4148 9 месяцев назад +4

    There is something for a story writing prosecutive that should be added. That the conversation between Rudeus and Nanahoshi, where Sylphiette feels left out, is very similar to the conversation between Rudeus and Ruijerd. It allows for us to compare how these two girls react to a time when Rudeus speaks a language they do not understand. It also was a time just like in season 2 in which we hear the language.
    And before we forget, another thing that I have yet to see in another isekai is the Main character learning more than one language from the world they are sent to. Let alone the culture of that world. Most Main characters are just given language by a god or something like that.

    • @NatalieXHunter
      @NatalieXHunter  9 месяцев назад +2

      There are a few series where they do tackle language in terms of world building. Like in Re:Zero, everyone canonically speaks Japanese (for reasons that are probably relevant to the main overarching story, but haven't been revealed yet) but they write with a different script, so Subaru can't read or write and Ram teaches him. In Ascendance of a Bookworm, where obviously literacy is very important to the MC, she can understand people but also has to learn to read and write, and because at that point in the story the magic and stuff hasn't been introduced, and we know people of her class don't travel much, we can assume she only knows the local language and there are others out there.
      In some stories it just isn't very important to what the author is trying to do, so they go for the approach of 'for worldbuilding, we will say different countries have different languages, but because we don't really want the MC learning them to stall their progress, we'll just give them some magic translation thing'. I think that's a perfectly reasonable affordance, too, if the story doesn't really benefit from it (like, would Doctor Who be better if instead of the handwave of the TARDIS translating for him and his companions, everyone instead had to study languages for every one shot story?).
      But because with Mushoku Tensei we have Rudy's whole life, rather than the typical few years that most isekai stories cover in detail, it is reasonable to have things like journeys taking a long time and him actually working hard to study languages. It also ties in to the theme of him vowing to actually try, and to work hard in this second chance life, because he didn't before. Most people don't learn all these languages, or learn to read as soon as they physically can, but it's part of what he's doing here to put in that effort. So it works as part of that theme as well as as worldbuilding. Series with different themes and protagonists just wouldn't really get the same value from including a lot of stuff about that particular aspect of the setting and the character's life.

    Do you guys plan to do the live streams again for the next cour? Those were actually pretty fun, and I'm not usually the one for live streams.
    All the controversies around this cour was rather stupid but predictable like the tide, still remember that Weeb Commander guy and found his tiktok about this not that long ago, it happens to be way worse then that one video he made.

    Concerning the controversies:
    1) The people, who complained about Rudy's attitude towards slavery, have almost without exception not watched the show/paid no attention. They completely ignored, that he rescued the beast children in season 1 and they completely disregarded the fact, that this is a MEDIEVAL setting, making slavery something that has been normalised to the inhabitants of this world. It's a completely realistic stance for Rudeus to have, to NOT fight/challenge the system, because he is only a single person. He wouldn't be able to do anything. At best he could....buy a slave and give that person a better life. And wouldn't you know, that's exactly what he did. It's almost as if people on X were just here to sh*t on the anime, completely disregarding all context of the "controversial" elements.
    2) The story did mess up with the "beast princess subjugation arc", to some degree, if you ask me. That's because it left out all the context of Linia and Pursena having been VERY NOTORIOUS bullies in school, before Rudy arrived. They were so bad, that the only reason why they weren't expelled, was, because they were royalty. Ariel and ESPECIALLY Fitz were the ones to put them in their place and get most bullies expelled (except Linia and Pursena). All that was missing from the anime and understandably gave people the impression, that Rudy was just abducting them, because of some stupid figurine. Don't get me wrong, that was HIS PERSONAL reason to do this, but the anime still made Linia and Pursena seem way to much like the victims, in my honest opinion. They left out vitally important context, when they adapted this part.
    Also, the parallels, between Rudy being stripped naked and doused in cold water by the beast tribe and him (implying) to do the same to the two girls was COMPLETELY lost on 99% of the "critics".

    • @fraktaalimuoto
      @fraktaalimuoto 9 месяцев назад

      About point 1). I wonder if part of the reaction is that people get uncomfortable with the fact that also in the real world we do just kind of accept many ethically dubious things because we feel, and often are, powerless. So it is instead easier to pass moral judgement on Rudy instead of having a moment of self-reflection.

    • @petermuller9480
      @petermuller9480 9 месяцев назад

      I don't think it's that deep. They probably just saw slavery as an element of the story and that was the reason why they decided to attack it. It's that simple.
      They fail to understand that creating a flawed fictional world as an author, a world, that has many injustices ,not only is more realistic, but it also creates tension in the story. If there is no problems of whatever nature in a society, there is nothing to be solved and honestly, that kind of story would be VERY unrealistic/unbelievable.
      The kind of people, who complain about slavery in fiction, are the ones, that have no idea whatsoever of history. The vast majority of human history slavery was a thing. That doesn't make it okay, of course, but when your write a fictional story in a historical society, it would be more realistic, if it had slavery. Just saying......@@fraktaalimuoto

    Great review! I found the episode where he bought the dwarf slave girl a bit jarring and out of character. Although it sounds like their intentions were noble in the end, their initial motivation was to buy a little slave girl to make lewd sculptures for them. Although there's no evidence that they are into kids, it did seem like they were just using her at first. The next episode helped to alleviate that impression, though, and I'm glad that in the future it turns out to be something much more wholesome.

    You weren't the only one who cried during the last two episodes. And I felt like as soon as she walked back through the door on the morning after and he held her and told her "thank you", he was cured. I get why the feeler was there, but to me, it was unnecessary. The fact that she didn't abandon him, and even that night in the cave had reacted the opposite of how Sarah had, showed how much of a wonderful, caring, loving and supporting woman and is. And that's what Rudy needed. So that scene of him holding her and saying thank you, I was crying like the floodgates of heaven had opened up.

    While I like the new opening, I do miss how season 1 would cut out the anime opening (and sometimes the ending) all together, replacing it with 1:30 (or 3:00 with ending) more screen time per episode. They could have used the time with season 2 part 1 only being 12 episodes. I think this is the main reason why people think that season 2 had lower production then season 1. Though many review seem not to understand that. You're the only review that did note that, and I thank you for that. I was beginning to think I was the only one that noted how the lack of an opening and sometime an ending, effected the viewing experience.

    As an anime only, this is the angle I wanna talk about - All the missed content LN readers talked about in S1 of the show were always "bonus points" "fun facts". We had a good time back when Muse Asia first aired Mushoku on YT with millions of views per episode. We all had a blast discussing the show with LN readers providing fun facts. This is directly contrasting to how first 3/4th of S2P1 was. Lot of the missed content was in the form of "here is additional context from LN that explains this plot point better". Lot of it wasn't just fun facts, it was needed stuff to correct the flow of the story. Thats they key reason S2P1 disappointed me. The directing and storyboarding took massive hits (I say massive coz Mushoku is a delicate show).
    In general who wouldn't be depressed to learn that the legendary S1 Studio Bind might never come back (I hope S2P2 saves me). There was that dreadful news before airing and only got proven during the show. This aside, the biggest gripe is how much of S2P1 relied on trust. The trust that you are still atleast going through a masterpiece of a story and that the LN has perfect flow of conversations and dialogues. A delicate show demands a high quality adaptation to work. Execution matters, not just ideas.

    Hi Natalie, great video as always.
    I've been wondering if showing episode zero at the start, did the Fitz arc a dis-service? In the light novels, Rifujin doesn't explicitly say that Fitz and Sylphie are the same person even Fitz being female is only hinted at. When we get Sylphie's side story chapters she talks about Fitz as though he's a different person to her. It's easy to make the connection but I think the intention was to keep the reader wondering if that easy connection is a red herring. This kind of story is of course easier to pull off in a book than on film, but had we not had episode zero spell it out definitively. Rudeus probably wouldn't have seemed like quite so much of a dunce. I still like episode zero but think it should have been a bonus episode shown at the end.
    I'd be keen to hear what you and others think about this.

    • @NatalieXHunter

      I always felt like the reveal about Fitts being Sylphy was supposed to be a surprise for Rudy, not for the audience. It was terribly obvious it was her even though never stated, so I don't think it was ever intended to be a mystery to the reader. So, I don't think making it clear in the anime really changed the impact. As I said in the video, I also don''t think the idea is that Rudy is a dunce or oblivious, I think he always knew deep down but just wasn't ready to accept it due to the other stuff he was dealing with - it was easier to go along with Fitts being a new person and a man, so he didn't have to consider anything other than just making a new friend, iykwim.

    I'm going to continue standing on the soap box that they should have done more with Sara - especially that conversation (for a lack of a better term) with Elise after hers and Rudy's falling out. I get it - its a Sara POV chapter and the anime tends to avoid adapting those, but it's going to make one of the episodes in early parts of S3 come off weird without Sara learning the context of why Rudy was the way he was and why their relationship failed at the most critical juncture.
    Otherwise, I had few complaints about cour 1 - well, maybe the OP. I mean, as much as I love Ed and his analysis, after about the 10th straight week of an hour-long OP analysis... lol.

    Given the more in depth source. The Core was well done. The smaller details missed could have been covered somewhat by the MT opening vs the wasted space of a traditional OP. Or even it would be nice to get an OVA for skipped content.
    Focusing on Rudy for the anime makes sense but the story is missing so much by that tactic

      I'm 100% sure that at least the Eris stuff will get covered in an OVA, otherwise they wouldn't have drawn attention to Nina. But yeah, there's so much richness to MT, but I think it's fine for some of it to stay in the LNs for people to discover, as long as the anime puts across what you need to both understand and care about what's happening, and I think it did do that (unlike something like Shield Hero season 2. Season 3 has been way better though).

Seems like no major important bits were cut and the fights were awesome! Once again, people who got angry with this season's "controversy" just wanna get mad about shit and feel better about themselves virtue signalling without understanding the context. Great video!

    I only got to watching this a couple weeks ago and my goodness, I had heard lots of people take issue with the first few episodes, but seriously, I had genuine joy from start to finish. Yeah it can be frustrating seeing what might seem like "silly mistakes" but hey it was a small town and they travel in similar circles and routes, not too out of the ordinary to cross paths like that on the street and unknowingly make a huge fool of oneself. Or Rudy brooding so heavily even after all this time, but damn dude, a big part of him is struggling with just moving past the crushing idea he may have ruined a SECOND chance at life, while not continuing to let people down and abandon his family when he's got ish to do.
    I was especially surprised with Sylphie's representation and playfulness, and was pleased that for me personally it didn't feel trite or overstayed its welcome. It was beautiful, and damned endearing to see that she's not simply an empty shell to receive the main character's affection, but *clearly* has desires and goals herself, even to the shock of her far more experienced companions, while *also* working through a few of her own hang-ups in the hopes that she doesn't screw things up.
    It's like a reverse Empire Strikes Back, man, and I'm a little worried for what's ahead of them, but I really liked this catch-up chapter. Just kinda wish there was a tiny bit more Man God involvement (though I suppose the point is that he's not directly involved and giving the audience reason to suspect he's manipulating the two characters into this relationship).

    I don't have much to comment on or add cus u basically said it all lol. I do hope they switch between the 2 OP styles tho. I like that u added further context on Rudeus's introspection on his sexuality cus it seems interestin how he takes it. For many the possibility of such a realization is pretty big but for him it seems almost candid how he takes such a thing lol(at least that's how it seems from the way u put it). I think production wise it's a noticeable step down but not bad & I feel this comes from 1. possible schedulin in comparison to the previous season & or 2. The diff director for this season who's attention on the work wasn't as all encompassin as the 1st nor do I believe they were as experienced. I'm excited for the next batch cus I feel jus like last season that'll be the highlight. I think pacing and such was fine, but it beeing 2 cour didnt help aka its basicly was a half lenght season. Its surely a more calm part of Rudeuses life where he has some time to grow up but overall it felt a bit too slice of life when compared to season 1. The big elephant in the room is the much reduced production value of season 2 which by it self is fine but a lot worse then season 1. Especially jaring as i rewatched S1 going into it. I hope Cour 2 will be much improved with the studio budgeting in cour 1. Honestly it was a bit of a let down aka other then some fabricaded "controversy" basicly nobody cared too much for the season / there was overall very little positive talk about it.
    I am positive about the upcoming cour. And this is quite contrary to how i feel about many of those curently very dissapointing season 2 and 3 orf other shows that cannot life up to prior seasons.

    An idea that just recently popped into my head is why Rudy did not question Nanahoshi's existence in the grand scheme of things.
    It's obvious neither of them know why they have been sent here, but one of them (Rudy) has an extra piece of information that should have been shared. The discussions between him and the wanna-be Loki. The fact that Rudy is someone that can't really be "controlled" by Hitogami, because he's not from the 6-sided world is important, but he never considered her to be the same. And it's quite the big puzzle piece.

    • @TheKueiJin
      @TheKueiJin 9 месяцев назад

      Also why I mean by control is the fact that he would always doubt Hitogami, hell, he's probably the only one for whom Hitogami would actually have to resort to other tricks. Unlike someone more feeble minded, same gender, similar age, mindset, and using the same last name.

    • @NatalieXHunter

      Hitogami actually has a thing where people automatically trust him and like him - basically the opposite of the curse Orsted has where people automatically hate and fear him. Neither of these work on Rudeus because he's from another world, but he doesn't really fully know about this yet. As for why he doesn't talk to Nanahoshi about it, consider how Orsted reacted to him mentioning Hitogami and the fact Nanahoshi is friends with Orsted.

    The controversy around slavery in fantasy seems to partly stem from people not understanding the full history around how we ended slavery or at least what most would consider slavery... That's if we avoid children soldiers, sex trafficking and otherwise other forms of modern slavery. Ya know the things that sadly happen in reality but X ignores just like they were accusing Rudeus for doing. As at the end of day one man or even a single country can not sway countries, bad people/organisations into doing what they don't want to do. That's also ignoring other factors like in some forms of the system most slaves could buy their freedom and earn citizenship. This is what Rome did. It probably wasn't as rare as some people believe for people to buy their freedom. In some cases family or friends or slave owners themselves could just buy the slaves freedom and many did. There are many famous former slaves in our history who went on to do something with their lives. This is what Rudeus is giving that a girl. A chance.
    If we wanted to be realistic and say Rudeus wanted to end slavery for good he would probably need military force and funds equivalent to the big players of 1800's Europe. Britain, France and so on. (Depends on how big the world Rudeus is in) That's an insane amount for a single man to do. He can't just go round kidnapping or freeing slaves as that would only makes things worse. Security would be increased. Slaves might in some cases be hobbled so they can't escape. I know a lot of people don't understand history but it took decades for us to fully end slavery. A lot of countries couldn't/wouldn't stop slavery because their entire economy revolved around it. It was their biggest export in most cases even after Europe, America and others made it illegal. You can't just flick a switch and every other country suddenly goes oh yeah this is bad, we'll stop now. That isn't how it works. To enforce such a thing you have to have the power to do so. Rudeus doesn't and likely wouldn't be able to do that and by the time he did Juliette would be long dead or taken by someone else. This is a medieval society we're talking about.
    Sorry for the long paragraphs just annoys me that X is legit braindead when it comes to subject matters like these. It's also fiction and if they don't like dark elements like slavery then fantasy is far from the genre they should be reading/watching.

      Well put! Even just stopping (but not ending) slavery in a local area that legalizes it is a monumental & dangerous task; life-long even.
      Ofc though, people who complain like Twitter do don't truly care about the reality of such things as slavery but are rather offended at being shown something uncomfortable and their reasonings are merely lazy parroted excuses to convince themselves otherwise.
      It's telling with the way how they want the scene to be resolved: in some flashy/loud shounen-esque way of "demolishing" or rebuking the slave shop. It doesn't have to be the trade itself for some of them even. As long as the character advocates an obvious form of self-righteousness or moral grandstanding since that's what a lot of those complainers are actually doing.
      I won't deny that their distaste may be genuine, and they have every right to be, but they sure haven't grappled with it maturely.

    • @thant0s
      @thant0s 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@userk2comment Exactly. There's a frightening degree of lack of understanding for cultures and time periods in which slavery took place, and the reality of the world revolving around its practice. The concept of a slave ever benefiting in the slightest from such an arrangement is such a torturous insult to them, they can't see past their own righteous anger and take stock of the reality of someone with a life of experiences, expectations and resource access FAR divorced from their own.
      And especially when it comes to fantasy settings, where many representations of the practice are downright whimsical and very often benign and in service to the plot, they're not really acting from a realistic perspective in the first place, so modern interpretations and historical comparisons just do not apply.

    I like the university arc of MT because it's the buildup to the hyper competent scheming god that they portray Rudy as in later arcs. There is a shift after parting ways with Eris where they goal goes from survival to discovery fueled by his relationships with Hitogami and Orsted. By the end of this cour he's no longer just reactive to the world at large. Now we see his first big decision being to build and future with Sylphy and the next big one which is resolving his past. And yeah I'm a huge fan of Rudy x Sylphy.

    I'm an anime only and I really loved it. Not as much as Frieren, but director Keiichiro Saito is my new anime god between it and Bocchi last year. Are you going to talk about Frieren? I know it's not an isekai, but I wanna talk about Frieren!
    The "woke" complain so much about fantasy worlds with slavery in them, yet I don't think I have ever seen a single anime that has ever depicted it as a good thing. It's always portrayed as wrong, but what can one person do at any given moment? That may be by helping one or two people, slaves, by being a better owner than they'd likely find elsewhere. What would be accomplished by freaking out and trying to forcibly free the slaves? Best case, you now have a bunch of mouths to feed *and* you're all fugitives (honestly, I'd watch that anime, but that's whole story of it's own), worst case, you get arrested and sentenced to slavery yourself.
    The harpies never think things through (they don't want to), they just bark their virtue signal so the rest of their ilk can see their "righteous" public display of disapproval, but they do very little to create any real change. I mean, if things really changed for the better, what would they complain about? How would they attention then? This is why they hate Mr. Beast so much. The social justice idiots of the Twatterati are beneath contempt. Everything they do is for attention, thus they are best ignored.

      Absolutely spot on. The obvious difference between legendary S1 and S2P1 is the general production value and mainly the lack of fine tuning. As an anime only S1 stands out because they were able to perfect the flow of the show and narrative even with lot of cut content coz the LN is big. Out of this world directing and storyboarding. But S2p1 suffered a lot in terms of storyboarding where lot of plot points relied too much on trust, the trust that the LN did a perfect job with the flow of explaining things and that this isn't a fuck up by the writer.
      Our relationship as a viewer to Rudeus and this show will always be fragile. S1 kept the balance while S2 didn't a lot of time. I still consider S2p1 to be a solid 8/10 but its one of those rare "Its really disappointing that it is only an 8".

In all seriousness, though, there would be people, like say, the maids in Sauros' mansion, who would certainly consider being a maid in a mansion and having food and shelter a much better life than being homeless and chased down by people they owe money to, because of a failed business or something (the reason Julie's family was poor). I see that more as indentured servitude than slavery (if you ignore the fact Sauros was sleeping with at least some of them, but we don't know if that was part of their duties or consensual). People even in the early 20th century lived like that, as maids and stuff, in the UK, even my great great grandmother did. It probably was hard work, but it wasn't anything like what we picture when we imagine slavery. And so I think if I was in that kind of situation in that kind of era, yeah, I would probably do that.

      Honestly I think the Badigadi conversation could have benefited from maybe 30 more seconds to include the stuff about Orsted more, but I don't think there's enough going on in that scene to make a full episode. If anything, the beastgirl stuff was lacking information more than anything else, because it was never really established how much of an actual menace they were, or their history with Fitts, so I think cutting down that to half an episode would have been worse. Idk though, everyone has different things in their minds that they think were more important than others, in terms of what was left out. All I can really say is that I think what we actually got worked.
      And besides, we've read the novels - we know all that stuff anyway, so would it really have enhanced out experience to see a few extra lines voice acted? For the anime onlies, I think there was enough there for them to care about each character and event and understand what's going on, without getting frustrated at staying on one minor plotline for too long. So, to me, the balance was decent.

And them doing this and just half assing everything has me SOO scared they are going to shield hero this show and just kill the fan base because they aren't willing to spend the budget or give them the time. These studios need to realize if fans go crazy for a show because of its incredible animation, and then they chop the quality down Immensely, it will make the fan base drop off huge, especially in 2023 when a lot of fans are ficle and only care about animation.

      idk, I rewatched season 1 recently with a friend and aside from a couple of episodes here and there I'd say they were pretty comparable. And if they saved money by using a normal OP (which tbh, as I said in the video, worked fine for an arc where Rudy is in one place the whole time), then that means more budget to spend on other things - there are things in cour 2 that will need very good action animation. They don't have infinite money so to make one thing as good as it can be sometimes they have to cut back somewhere else. What they delivered was good, and I don't think there's any value to being demanding about things. If it had sucked and the adaptation had been awful, sure, but that wasn't the case.

Initially, its impression may seem like just another run-of-the-mill power fantasy, but after catching a few glimpses of it-Cid's intense training with Claire, Claire's intriguing brother complex, and the awe-inspiring ultimate attack "I... AM... ATOMIC"-it becomes evident that this series offers a unique twist that captivates viewers from the very start.
      Chapter 1:
      The Protagonist: Cid Kagenou At the heart of TEiS lies an unforgettable protagonist, Cid Kagenou, who can be best described as an ignorant sociopath, possessing an unparalleled obsession with combat and an insatiable thirst for power. His extensive knowledge of history, mythology, and the paranormal surpasses that of any ordinary historian. Through the combination of his magical abilities, medical expertise, and relentless training from birth, Cid has become a superhuman force. His unyielding pursuit of power and his live-action role-playing power fantasies make him an intriguing and unstoppable character.
      Chapter 2:
      The Unique Comedy TEiS balances its dark storyline with well-executed comedy, largely derived from Cid's unconventional interpretations of events. Operating on a different wavelength than others, Cid's actions and intentions often lead to humorous misunderstandings. This action-comedy dynamic adds a delightful layer to the narrative, providing laughs while showcasing Cid's distinct personality.
      Chapter 3:
      The Vague World-Building and Diverse Characters The intentionally ambiguous world-building of TEiS allows for limitless storytelling possibilities. The characters in this world defy stereotypes, making their journeys all the more engaging. Each character possesses their own unique charms, making it easy to root for them and invest in their individual paths.
      Chapter 4:
      Visual and auditory excellence TEiS excels in its visual and auditory presentation. The setting creates an immersive environment that stands out from other generic isekai worlds, thanks to its modernized approach. The music, composed by Kenichiro Suehiro, is truly impressive, with grandiose compositions and an epic choir that perfectly sets the tone for each scene. The combination of striking character designs and captivating music elevates the overall viewing experience.
      Epilogue:
      Looking Ahead While I thoroughly enjoyed the first season's adaptation by Nexus and the director, I do hold some concerns about budget allocation for future seasons. Nevertheless, I eagerly anticipate the developments that may arise from this approach. The potential for unexpected and intriguing story arcs has me excited to witness how TEiS progresses in the future.
      Conclusion:
      The Eminence in Shadow is an absolute must-watch for fans of the reincarnation/isekai genre who seek a fresh take on familiar tropes. Its exceptional storytelling, memorable characters, and captivating music set it apart as a standout anime of 2022. In my opinion, TEiS is a masterpiece that has the potential to be a strong contender for anime of the year in 2022-2023. I highly recommend immersing yourself in The Eminence in Shadow for a truly exceptional and entertaining experience.

    I'll say this:
    Anime only viewers, READ THE LIGHT NOVEL!!
    There are two channels on RUclips, Right Now, that have audio versions of all 25 volumes, minus the last volume 26.
    Wispy Tales & Truck-Kun LN.
    I recommend Wispy Tales because it has the chapters if you need to skip to where the anime left off.
    This LN has consumed me. It's AWESOME!!
    The anime left out way too much.

    The dub actually handled ep 9 really well.

      I would have assumed it would be easier in the dub as they could just switch to Japanese for Rudy and Nanahoshi's conversation, because they use English (or whatever dub you're watching) as the stand in for the local language instead of Japanese. In the original they had to have a way to show they were now speaking actual Japanese even though they're always speaking Japanese as the stand in for the local language, so they had to do a little shift to Rudy and Fitts speaking the fictional language that we're supposed to assume they're speaking all the time before going to Rudy and Nanahoshi speaking Japanese.
