How does this not have more views?? It was a great comparison video! I've been considering getting a new mic, so watching your review was super insightful - thanks for sharing!
Great review. I have been using the Takstar Mic for about a year on and off. I believe that it is leaps and bounds better than the built in mic on my Canon R6. However, there are some things I would advise people to get into the habit of checking when they are shooting videos to save some grief. I have already forgotten to turn this mic on, so obviously, there was no audio, and recently, I accidentally had the 10db turned on accidentally when the camera was set up for the zero db, resulting in almost 100% clipping. I believe that the switches caught on my camera case while getting it out. When you mentioned that the Rode actually powers itself on, It made me seriously look into picking one up.
The auto on feature was one of the main reasons I made the purchase. And the fact that it can have a -12dB safe channel would have saved your audio in your situation too. The quality of the Rode is leaps better than the Takstar too. I’ve used it on the road to do voice overs for commercials. Very versatile.
I was thinking of replacing my T598 with the Deity Duo D4, but now I’m thinking I just need to keep refining how I use the T598 to max out what it can do. Thanks for a great video.
The Duo is a great mic too. If you do a lot talking from behind the camera, that would be my top choice for you. But I’d base getting a new mic on what you need rather than sound quality alone, because you can get very good quality from the t598. ✌🏽
Great review but at 3:20'ish, having the microphones plugged into different targets might make your results invalid but correct me if you think otherwise. When I use the same microphone I will get different results when it's using my Zoom H6 between the mic and camera and when using my Tascam Mixcast 4 between the mic and camera. I'd love to see you review the newer SGC-600, hint hint. Thanks mate.
I agree with your thought about mics being plugged into different recorders. It’s the preamps and processing that changes the sound. The Zoom H1 has better but similar preamp to DSLRs, so you may hear a slightly less noisy signal. But it shouldn’t color the tone in any way. Now, if I were to use a DSLR as input 1 and something like a Sound Design MixPre, you’d hear a major difference. The MixPre has much better preamps and processing. So even though you’re right, I think this is still a fair comparison. Great idea about the Neewer mic. My sneaking suspicion is that… it’s the same mic. 😉
Thanks for this, I have been considering spending on a Rode mic so I can add better quality to my videos, I have a Takstar already that I paid £3 for second hand, just did an initial test with it and was stunned at the difference between my built in camcorder mic (Panasonic HC X920) just saved a lot of money! Excellent.
Love this! Price isn’t always about quality. In this case I think it’s more about versatility and options. Choosing solely on quality and price, the Takstar is a clear winner.
Late to the party, but let me say I'm using the Takstar and I've had no complaints. Thing is, I've also been considering getting the RODE VideoMic NTG, and your side-by-side comparison (even if a year old) really helps me evaluate between the two. The very noticeable noise floor difference of the Takstar stands out for me. Generally, I love RODE products, so I guess I'll be coughing up $250 in my near future. Good job!
Sounds great, both mics actually! Your voice is always so smooth and calming. Liking the new setup with the dark mood. I’ve been pushed into the kitchen now for my office as the kids need own rooms but I know have a massive audio problem in the echo of the kitchen
Thanks James! I was working I’m random spots in my house until recently. I kind of hijacked the kids school room to be my office. It’s small, but a massive improvement to productivity.
A. J. Williams Media I really want a garden office that I’ll use as my work space and RUclips set. Got the perfect spot on our garden but don’t have £15k to spend on it when there’s little to no work coming in. I just know having a permanent setup will make creating content do much easier. Away from the noise and styled how I want
Im looking into buying the takstar-sgc600...I already have a RØDE videomic pro plus...but I want to get an extra mic for smaller videos like vlogging...great comparison video btw
Such a great video! Thank you! Can I use the Rode VideoMic NTG on my iPhone? Or do I need to buy any special mounts etc, to make that work? I’d like to be filming most of my videos outdoors while on the go (mostly beaches) and this seems like a good mix to go with.
That sounds so relaxing! You can use the mic with an iPhone. You’ll need a t-r-s to t-r-r-s converter and the Apple 3.5mm iPhone adapter to make it work. If you want to mount the mic so that it’s attached to truly phone you’ll need something like this: ruclips.net/video/MtbryWzoL0I/видео.html
Sick comparison dude, I just sold my wireless go because the audio was wack, I much prefer the audio from my takstar but I want to level up. Still debating getting the ntg.. the auto on feature is clutch for me and straight outta camera audio is a plus too.. thanks for the vid! Subbed.
Thanks! I think the Takstar is a bit noisy too so I almost always use noise reduction when I use it. But the Rode VideoMic NTG is everything I’ve ever wanted in an on camera mic for DSLR. Totally worth the $250!
two years later, I stumbled on this video as I was searching for the takstar with outdoor usage as all my footage is outside but id like to record multiple people with as little wind as possible as that's my biggest annoyance. I know it's been two years but what are your thoughts on this?
If you’re on a budget, the Takstar is still a great mic. Get a dead-cat for wind noise and it’ll be great for outdoor use. If you’ve got some money to spend, I’d go with the Rode Videomic NTG. It’s way more versatile, better quality and the safe channel recording has saved me more than a few times.
@@ajwilliamsmedia thanks, yea the deadcat is a dead must, I'm just tired of having the wires with the lav mic attached to me hidden inside my sweater as the wind will still get through the deadcat itself otherwise. Thanks for the tips. I'd buy the rode but being in Canada $330 is a bit much vs $40
The answer to that question can be complicated but let me try and answer simply: Yes. But it depends on your signal to noise ratio. The further you are from the mic and the softer you talk will affect that ability. You also have to be careful with noise reduction because of the warbaling audio thing that happens when you add too much.
Great video. Saw your post on the youtubers Group on FB. Exactly what I needed since I am having trouble with my audio. Have to find out where all the settings are on DaVinci Resolve. Keep the work up! Subbed and liked the video.
The real question is, what's mic you used to shoot that little scene outside with your kids, absolutely clear audio despite the wave and the background.
I used the rode videomic ntg for those scenes. It’s my go to mic for most things right now. The safety channel is so important when I need it that I hate shooting without it.
Great videos, man! I came across your personal post in NLC (or one of its brethren groups) a week or so ago. A few people left comments about the quality of the audio and in response you mentioned that you might do a video on how you record audio (even mentioned DeVerb, I think). Anyway... I would be super interested in your audio recording process regardless of $50 mic, $250, or $1,000. I always find myself adding reverb because I don’t want vocal track to be too dry, but your results sound stellar and mine could clearly be improved. I will keep looking through this channel in case I missed your audio set up video, but if you were considering making that video, I think it could help a ton of people. Thanks for helping us folks get better 👍
Thanks John! I always try to capture the cleanest dry vocal possible so I can add reverb in post. Most of the time adding DeVerb help create that clean starting point. I do add reverb depending on what I want the final product to feel like though. I have a video coming soon about my audio process too, so stay tuned!
A. J. Williams Media Awesome! Thanks for the reply. I have a room with *some* sound deadening on the wall (foam squares, blankets, anything I have around) but I can make improvements there. I have a RODE mini shotgun for my DSLR. Not the high end one (I spent $100). I did not know about DSLR pre amps adding significant noise to the recording. Looking forward to your vid and learning more 👊
I made this video a while back, but I don’t remember saying that it sounds like the MKH416. I compared the price in this video but that’s just to emphasize the law of diminishing returns, not meant as a direct comparison. I apologize if that wasn’t clear to you.
The most important thing to remember is the difference of build quality. The Takstar has an attached cable, and the Rode's cable is replaceable. If the Takstar's cable is busted, the mic is done as well. The audio quality from both mics from what I am heard, are very similar.
Great points! I’ve had the Takstar for about 3 years now and although the build quality isn’t as good (nowhere near) it is still going strong. New video coming soon with updates though!
Dude, get your mug off the camera and feature Jessica, lol. Seriously, my rule is you have to match the mic to the voice. You gave me a good reference with a female voice. I of course sound more like you but there are a dozen male voice reviews for the Takstar SGC-598. I recently acquired two Takstar SGC-598's I picked up on clearance for $10 each. They do the job.
Something I've learned from sound production is you don't always take your best gear into every situation just take the gear that suits the need for the day. Gear gets rained on. Sometimes it gets legs and walks away. The Takstar looks professional to the general public and at this price point I'm not going to lose sleep if it gets dunked in a swimming pool.
I currently use the Takstar as well. I am looking to get both the Video Mic NTG and also the NTG4+ with the Zoom H4n Pro
You can’t go wrong with either of those mics. The NTG4+ is definitely made for use with a field recorder though and the H4N pro is a great one. 👍🏼
Amazing video! Shocked why you don't have more subscribers, you deserve more.
Thanks so much!

is it possible to remove the Takstar bg noise with noise reduction in post, or is it always there

Do you have an example? It may be that you need to sound treat your room or move away from noisy air vents etc.
