Best sub-$1,000 Over/Under Pt. 2: Mossberg Intl. Gold Reserve

  • In the last five or so years there have only been two $1,000 over/under shotguns (surely there are a few others I haven’t tested) that I thought performed well enough to recommend. (And any time there's an over/under that costs less than a grand, you can bet it came from Turkey where the skill is great but the labor is cheap.) Those were Yildez’s steel receiver HPS model (see link below) and possibly CZ’s Redhead. Today I’m tentatively adding Mossberg’s International Gold Reserve to my shortlist. I say tentatively because I haven’t put thousands of rounds through it yet, but so far, so good. It looks, handles and shoots like a shotgun costing much more.

I think the 725 Browning Feather 12 gauge I bought with 26 inch long barrels is my all around shotgun. At 6 pounds and 7 ounces I use Trulock blackened stainless steel ported
extended improved cylinder and improved modified chokes making overall barrel length about 27 inches. My legacy shotgun.

The Mossberg gold sport deluxe is actually the Tristar TT 15. Both are exceptional shotguns.

That is almost identical to the new TriStar TT-15 guns. I have the TT-15 sporting with 30" ported barrels. It has a steel receiver and is overall heavier specifically for clay shooting. I think Khan is putting out some really nice, high quality Over/Under shotguns. I have the same 5 chokes and they pattern very well. I looked at the Orion and I like the TT-15 much better and it takes the Mobile chokes.

I have two (2) of them (TriStar 15s. One single and one bl barrel) . Great for a beginner. The chokes are Beretta optimum chokes.

I like it. I found a lot of decent Silver Reserve reviews, and figured, (like teen church group says) go for the Gold!
I just got into shooting clays this spring. Got a good used Benelli SBE sporting, but was really admiring the o/u’s I was seeing everywhere. I love my 500 and Patriot, and almost every hunting enthusiast I know owns a Mossberg. So I figured $900, I can’t really go wrong. I did add a limbsaver, to reduce felt recoil. The 20 gauge is good. I’ve shot better rounds with the SBE, but only by one or two points. Mostly because I stick with IC and cylinder and they don’t reach out quite as far in the more challenging courses.
I did find a couple Carlson chokes, Skeet and IC, but not many true skeet set ups running here. #9 shot is hard to find, Covid has hurt the sport here too, but it’s making a comeback.
Thanks for the video, there is literally nothing out there for this great shotgun. I really appreciate your thoughts on this one. Being an amateur in this sport, it’s really great getting this affirmation on my first Over/ Under. They are beautiful, and after a half dozen cases of 20 gauge, I can attest, it works.

Jst bought the gold reserve as my very first gun. And was wondering if I can shoot steel with these chokes or do I have to get a certain choke that can shoot steel out of this gun. Sorry dumb question but Jst had to ask u

The stock chokes that came with your gun should be fine with steel. The pattern with steel shot will be about one choke size tighter then the same choke with lead.

hard to buy a Mossberg, my first shotgun was a Mossberg back in the late 70s, it was crap, swore I'd never buy one again.

My Mossberg broke at the thinnest point on the stock from repeated open and closing of the action. Do not recommend
