  • Today I'm finally going to review this super adorable little wooden box set of 12 Rembrandt watercolor paints that I found when I was in Corfu, Greece. In a previous video (here: • Rembrandt Professional... ), I'd said I wasn't so keen on the Rembrandt tubes - will this dry half pan set be better? Let's find out, with some swatchings and paintings in my new Hahnemuhle Sketchbook!
    Let me know if you see this wooden box set anywhere - it doesn't seem to be online! But I did find another pocket set which has the same colours as the one I am using today.

    I don't remember who, but an artist was really annoyed at how weak Rembrandt half pans were, only to try the paint a year later and realize that there was a layer on top of them and when she tried them again she fell in love with them 😅 I love how your spread turned espacially the dog painting 🥰 and the hand lettering looks so nice!

    I looooove a genuine Viridian, it is such a versatile colour. I’m pretty sure it’s not meant to be used on its own but when mixed with other colours you can get the most beautiful blends… I use it with Rose Madder Genuine, Potter’s Pink and with other greens or blues, it’s just a matter of experimenting. I have a Phthalo green (cool shade) in my pallet which allows me to get the most gorgeous dark greens, especially when used with Alizarin Crimson.

    Lovely paintings! I'm still learning about pigments and how they behave. I have never bothered to swatch out colors before, but within the last few months I've been making swatch cards. I'm addicted to swatching videos now. Lol! I only have student grade and cheap watercolors for my art journal (more like a junk journal)😄 but I've already learned a lot. I have the W&N Sketcher's paintbox of 12 and the viridian hue is one of my favorite colors. I know professional paint ingredients differ, but you would think it should be vibrant. That texture when you swatched it out was weird, but again I'm totally new to all this. Love your videos. I've learned a lot. Your diamond painting videos make me want to buy one. I've never heard of that particular craft. And I keep forgetting to tell you how adorable your kitties are! ❤ 😊

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  Год назад +1

      Viridian hue is usually made with Phthalo Green, which is a much stronger colour, and also a lot easier to rewet. Genuine Viridian is usually a real pain to use! I went through a big swatching phase a few years ago; I still like to do them now when starting a new set so I can get an idea of the colours, and what I might paint with them for a video, haha.

    Hi Becky, you mentioned that you have trouble with darkening your greens. I learned, from one of the books of Wendy Hollender, the grisaille technique. You layer a dark pencil ( I.e. dark sepia) before you use the green watercolor. Especially the darker shadows is great for this technique. I can recommend her books, I really learned a lot. I have a Daler Rowney set that has one like it, it does very good water in vases and glasses but is otherwise useless. Your split primaries look very nice, and that dark green just looked the ticket.
    Your dog is really great!
    Yellow flowers are quite hard to paint - the deeper tones are hard to even visualise - if you can find a neutral grey with no colour bias at all you can use a first layer to put in tone and form then use the yellows. Or that is what works for me…

    I love real viridian but if they aren't going to use real viridian then they should leave it out and replace it with something else. This viridian hues suck ass. Real viridian makes an excellent mixer.

      You can have my pan, when I swap it out for a darker green, haha!

      @@BeckyTregear lol thank you but no. I agree that hue was not good. I agree with you 100%. Viridian hue stinks. I do like a good strong granulating real Viridian though.
      Aww, you're so sweet. Thank you for the thought, but no hues for me madame.

      @@BeckyTregear is that the real thing? Oh my that was bad bad bad. I'm sorry, I thought that was a hue because it was so weak. Holy crap. Maybe mine is just old then. I have a friend who is a buyer for a super famous store. She got me a shipment of new old stock paints from W&N. It was so old she said they gave it to her for free. Whether or not that's true I don't know, but she gave them to me for free. Too bad that was after I already bought all the colors daniel smith had to offer. Needless to say I'll never buy paint again for as long as I live. Nor will my grandchildren or their grandchildren should they desire the creative path. Anyway I say all that because the viridian I have pg18 is rich, creamy, strong, heavy granulation beautiful in mixes. It doesn't feel like all binder the way potters pink or some other pigments do.
      Just goes to show, can't judge a new player by the standards of the shoulders or stands upon. Lol thanks for replying.

      The Rembrandt Viridian is the real thing, but it’s weak, and veeeerrrry difficult to rewet. Many other better versions out there.
